City Life: Evolve
Project Overview
City Life: Evolve is a passion project of mine that has been in the making for several years now, starting out as a humble web browser game that I made when I was just getting started with programming, before turning into a multiplayer Unity game that I admittedly had too many issues with making and had to scrap 2 months in. Now, it's a single-player game that I've been working on for the past 9 months and with most of the 2-hour long demo completed, I'm looking to get some voice actors as minus the player character and the narrator, I'd like for the game to be fully voiced.
The game is a mix of a video game and a visual novel, letting the player walk around in a 2D world, equip clothing, talk to a variety of unique NPCs, take on jobs, complete quests and level up. It's a game inspired by several other works, like Ace Attorney, Criminal Case and Stick RPG, which is where its' visual novel aspect comes into play, as some parts of the game, such as the crime-solving portion, have lots of dialogue. As for our team, we have two people on board alongside me, with one of them being a composer and the other one being a composer and a story writer.

Requirements:
If you'd like to join the project and help make City Life: Evolve a reality, you'll need the following 7 things! We already have someone onboard who will be in charge of splicing your recordings and I'll be making it as easy as possible for you to record your voice lines thanks to color-coded documents of every script in the game. All of the word counts below assume that an average line contains around 18 words. The role size is based on how important that character will be to the entire story, not just the demo and finally, voice actors won't be paid, so please keep this in mind.
-Must have a Discord Account (please include your name and ID with your audition)!
-Must be 13 years of age or older.
-Must be able to perform angry, desperate, sad and happy voice lines as needed.
-Must have a decent mic or headset, good enough so that your voice lines will be clear and audible.
-Must have a good recording environment, so that no noises/static are heard in the background.
-Must stay committed towards meeting the 12/15/2020 deadline for all voice lines and any quests/voice lines beyond that. My goal is to release the demo on 1/1/2021 and some main characters have upwards of 500-600 voice lines, so staying on track is very important, even if you're playing a minor character.
-Must be respectful of all people working on the project (directors, voice actors, etc.), regardless of their gender identity, disability, sexuality, race, etc.

Thank you very much for all of your support and auditions, as we got over 100 auditions in all! After several hours of consideration, we have selected the 12 voice actors who will be providing voice lines for the demo. If you're interested in joining the server, you can use this link: https://discord.gg/A4z2rkm I'll be providing regular updates leading up to the demo's release and in the future, we'll definitely need more voice actors, so this casting call won't be our last.

Thank you for your support (decisions will be made on the 22nd)!
Thank you very much for all of your auditions so far. Me and one of the composers will be looking over your auditions on the evening of the 22nd to make our final decision and we'll send you a friend request/message over Discord in case you get the part on the 22nd or the 23rd (hopefully the former)! We won't be making any decisions regarding the auditions until the 22nd (no VAs have been decided yet), so please feel free to post your auditions. We also still need more auditions for Sherry and Hong, too! Meanwhile, I've been working on the script for the third and last quest of the demo, which I hope to complete by November 8th or so (that includes color-coding/formatting it for easy reading). Regardless of what part you get, there are some voice lines ready for you, so we're hoping to start recording voice lines a few days after we make our picks. Thanks for following the development of City Life: Evolve!
We could definitely use artists since it'll greatly speed up my ability to create new quests as as of right now, all of the assets are being drawn by me, which takes up around 50% of the development process. If you have experience with Paint.net or any other drawing software and can work with the line tool, shape tool, fill tool and so on, you'll have what it takes, as I have little experience with drawing!
As of right now, furniture, building exteriors and building interiors take up the most amount of time, so if you can meet deadlines, feel free to apply for this role, as it'll be a big help! All I need is a sample of your past artwork and I'm accepting just about anyone who's willing to help. A drawing tablet isn't necessary, but helpful, since some things can't be drawn with the built-in tools.
Here's an example of the game's art style (which is fairly simple):
Say something you think would fit
A detective who’s incredibly determined to end the war going on between the Mafia and the Scorpions and tends to go off on dangerous and somewhat irrational missions in the name of justice, which have made relations between the police and the gangs in the city quite strained. Due to having seen hundreds, if not thousands of lives displaced or ruined by both sides, he has become incredibly determined to end the suffering, even at the cost of his life. Over the course of the story, you and him will solve many mysteries together.
(telling the player about both gangs)
Their leader's a man by the name of Luis Salazar and the leader of the Mafia is a man named Edward 'Eddy' Lorenzo. Luis Salazar? He's cruel and merciless. Edward Lorenzo? He's cunning and devious.
(confident)
That's it, we have a perfect theory, decisive evidence and you're out of arguments. There's no way that you can run away from justice now!
(afraid, currently tied down to a chair)
Oh, God...you're sick! You're terrible, what the hell is wrong with you?! You're...you're just a monster!
A slightly grizzled man in his 40s who you meet on the train headed to Avondale and have a brief chat with. His voice is rather casual and he tends to ramble a little, too, always being interested in telling a tale or a tip to those who are interested in them. However, he can be menacing when he needs to. Shortly after he gets off the train, your luggage (which contained your phone, clothes, etc.) goes missing, prompting you to talk to Rick O’Hara, a detective, which kicks off the entire story.
(giving advice)
Ah, look at me, being all dopey. Well, you'll be just fine, don't worry. Settle down, find a job and you'll be right as rain.
(contemplative)
Yeah and who knows, maybe we'll meet up again, hopefully on better terms and not under the influence of these gangs. See you and sorry about your luggage.
(angry)
Now, this is just plain ridiculous! That business is mine and I just paid off my loan on that building last week, so you can keep your filthy mitts off of it, Vito!
Ray Guard was the competent bodyguard of the victim in the murder case featured in the demo and saw the victim as one of the best hitmen and bosses that the Scorpions had to offer, as he treated him well and not as an expendable crony. He has an odd sense of humor and tends to be a bit random at times, possibly just to lighten himself up due to his rather violent job.
(nervous)
Well, u-um, uh...that's it! I just spaced out for a bit, I'm sorry, I just lied about eating lunch. I...was half asleep at the time.
(serious)
I'm counting on you to solve this case, Rick. Or else there'll be a lot more blood spilled than just Victor's.
(testifying)
I was on the third floor since 8 AM, watching anyone who approached the apartment.
I didn't really take a look at the first or second floors, so I can't tell you if I saw Vito or not.
Shortly before the murder, I took a short break, sat down and ate some lunch off-camera.
Your killer could have entered during the lunch break that I took, it's as simple as that.
Kathrin Woe is a quite overconfident prosecuting detective/prosecutor who dresses to impress and although her track record in court is fairly poor, it's because she plays fair and refuses to stoop to corrupt tactics like some other prosecutors, like bribery, forged evidence and so on. Whenever she's facing off against another detective, it's fairly difficult to make her nervous and her specialty is thinking up of new arguments whenever she's in a pinch.
(serious and empathetic)
I got a note from Vito Coolio and he wants you two to 'find the truth' with it. Now, whatever happens in that interrogation room is strictly business, so don't blame me if I give you a tough time.
(serious)
No, this trial can't end just yet, Rick! Rest assured, there is a big problem with your theory. I'd like to ask for a 10 minute recess to get the results for a test that will blow your case to pieces.
(deadpan, noting that Rick's stalling for time)
Rick, that's just shameful, so please quit stalling. It's time to admit the truth and face the facts.
A man who rules through excessive fear and doesn’t care about human life, not even his own, having put his life on the line many times in the past to protect high-ranking members of the Scorpions and himself, giving him a high rank amongst the gang as a lieutenant. However, he also has quite a few enemies due to his poor treatment of his underlings, as he physically and psychologically abuses them. It’d be fair to consider him as a more villainous and morally black Goro Majima.
(giving orders to his underlings)
You over there, tie his arms up so that he won't be able to move. And you, Teresa! Break that device, right now, are you braindead or something?
(about to kill Rick and the player)
I’m messed up? Nah, I'm just having fun. And now...here's the part where I kill you. Goodbye, Rick and whoever you are.
(taunting and laughing at Rick and the player)
Ahahahahahaha! I can't believe that you actually FELL for that! Didn't I just tell you that I like to mess with your sanity, you braindead donkeys?!
Acting as the chief of police, Sandra Garcia has been working with the officers of the force to try to keep the city under control by keeping the damage done by the Scorpions/Mafia to a minimum. She doesn’t approve of Rick’s somewhat reckless personality, but has to agree that every now and then, he delivers solid results. Finally, she's fairly sympathetic towards those affected by the gangs' influence, especially to those who are being blackmailed into doing dirty deeds for them.
(introducing herself)
My name's Sandra Garcia, I heard that Rick took you on as his partner. Seeing that you captured this killer and found the truth, I can tell that you're after justice, just like everyone else here. Welcome to the team.
(scolding Rick)
As for you, Rick, I heard your desperate call and weren't you told to stay at the police department? I'm ashamed that you ran in there and got yourself captured. If it wasn't for your partner, you would've been killed.
(consoling a food thief)
I don't blame you for what you did, your family was starving and the gangs took everything from you. Rick, could you go bring her some food? Joe's Convenience Store will do the trick, just take this money and buy whatever you need.
A kind man who owns Geoffrey’s Grill and truly cares about grilling and serving the best possible food to his customers, even though he lives in the slums. He thinks of his burger joint as an upscale diner and calls his line cooks chefs. He also ends up giving you your first job in the city as a burger chef, taking you in after your luggage and belongings are stolen from you on the train ride to Avondale.
(greeting the player)
Hey there, it's a pleasure to meet you. You're new here, aren't you? The name's Geoffrey, what brings you here?
(instructing the player about their uniform)
This is your work uniform, you'll have to wear it here everyday to show your pride for Geoffrey's Grill. I had them custom-made myself, by a small company up in one of the fancier districts.
(elated that the player shares their sentiments)
Exactly! I'm always looking for the next big thing, whether it's a menu item or some sale that I can offer. I don't want to be just another cheap burger joint.
A woman who owns the rundown apartment block named ‘Mimosa Apartments’ and has a tendency to call people 'darling'. Even though her finances are tight and her building's falling apart, she hasn't lost her morality and offers to let you stay at her apartment block for a few days as Rick did a favor for her last week.
(greeting the player)
Hello, what can I do for you? Do you want a place to stay or are you looking to extend your rent?
(talking about a recently deceased tenant)
Most of the time, we don't have an open room, this place is practically a shelter. But you're lucky, someone 'moved out' yesterday.
(letting the player take the recently deceased tenant's belongings)
Right, and since he 'moved out', you can take whatever's in there for yourself. He won't be coming back to collect them anytime soon, so you can consider it as a 'moving in' bonus.
A man of Asian origin who speaks fairly fluent English, Hong owns ‘Avenue Clothing’ and hasn't run out of business thanks to a deal with the Scorpions, where if he supplies them with uniforms, they’ll make sure that he stays in business. Most of the businesses in the area have been shut down due to extortion, with his clothing store being one of the few places left.
(welcoming the player to his shop)
Yes, yes! Have a look, everything's a very good deal, I promise.
(serious, talking about Luis' murders)
His name? Luis Salazar. There were 4 gangs vying for the top. When Luis was done, there was only one, his...the Scorpions.
(mysterious, talking about Luis' murders)
There are rumors of how he took care of those leaders. Drive by shootings, burning them, they are all rumors. No one knows for sure.
We also need extras to cover a variety of characters like Scorpions, members of the Mafia, citizens and cashiers and we'll definitely need more beyond the initial demo. Please feel free to apply with a demo reel or the lines up above, as well as any extra lines that you can think of if you'd like to show off more of your vocal/acting range.
You're looking to become a chef, hmm? Alright, just head through the door at the back and talk to Geoffrey, he'll give you an interview.
You're damn right, don't you forget it. They're gonna know me as the man who took on that punk, Rito and saw the fear in his eyes as I iced him.
Wait, don't go that way! That bowling alley is home to the leader of the mafia, Edward Lorenzo!
