Children of Exile
Project Overview
Children of Exile is a fantasy audio drama about dead magic, love, found family, and overcoming societal evils. NO AI WILL BE USED FOR THIS PROJECT!
This is just for the pilot to make a proof of concept, though talent will likely be kept if this goes well! :)
Elizabet and her brother Cassian live peacefully, if un-fulfilled, in the village of Lavendre. She works with the town baker Darrow, alongside Old Marle, a crochety old woman. After finding a book of spells, written by her ancestor Rosalia, she manages to spark a spell. This leads hunters to her village, and her village is set alight. The hunters attack, and she calls out for help. An ancient Knight appears to assist.
Khadir is a prince of a desert kingdom. After his father dies in a coup, Khadir flees and is taken in by bandits. Khadir desperately desires a family, but no one ever is able to stick around. After attacking a caravan, he loses everyone and everything, except for a childhood friend, Zahara. She is hurt, but Khadir painstakingly manages to carry her to the nearest city, where they both collapse.
Arjun has been raised as a false religious figure by his uncle for over a decade. He is called a reincarnation of a dead god, which his uncle was instrumental in tricking the other priest in the testing procedure. He longs for freedom, as he's not allowed to leave.
Hope is a arctic fox. After her mother dies defending her from a bear, she drinks from a sparkling lake and finds she can swap between human and beast. She makes friends with a human who teaches her how to speak some, but then is betrayed. Her clan destroyed, and she is sold to a traveling circus.
The Knight is Edwarde, a ancient warrior, who, alongside Rosalia, sealed the darkness. He took a mortal wound in the process, and Rosalia tried to heal him, but merely bound him in a crystal coffin by accident. Little did she know that this would give him the century needed to heal.
The Man in the Hat always seems to be at the right place at the right time. Who is he? Why is he everywhere, and how does he know so much?
Old Marle is a crochety old lady, though kind, and a little mad. She has a secret as well that she'll never tell. She's got something to do after all.

ELIZABET: Mmmm. Sorry, Caien. Seems you should focus on your spelling first. [CAIEN: What?] ELIZABET: Your sign. [CAIEN: (realizing, dismayed) Not again.] ELIZABET: (spelling what he’s written) L-A-V-E-N-D-U-R. Hmmm. And here I thought our lovely town was Lavendre. (Lahv-en-dray)
ELIZABET: (a little embarrassed) Oh... Darrow, thank you for the kindness but I can’t just take this. [food]
ELIZABET: (to her little brother) GO WASH! You look and smell like a pig. If you’re going to play in the mud by the creek at least wash yourself when you’re through. I’ll make you something. [LATER] A hidden treasure in our kitchen floor? What’s in here, anyway. She unwraps the package and weathered pages crinkle beneath her fingers, somehow preserved throughout the years. (A wind blows through, flipping the pages and rustling.) [WHISPERING WIND: Rosalliaaa.] ELIZABET: (whispered) What are you?
Cassian is Elizabet’s nine year old younger brother in the village of Lavendre. He’s a small, messy troublemaker who lives for chaos, adventure, and whatever he can get away with. This includes stealing fruit tarts from the village baker.
He loves the outdoors and getting into trouble, yet he loves his sister and would do anything to her except relax. He respects her more than he'd ever admit.
HE ALSO HAS THE FEWEST AMOUNT OF LINES FOR THIS PILOT!

CASSIAN: Sis? [She sniffles, then just reaches over and ruffles his hair.] CASSIAN: Hey! [They both laugh.] CASSIAN: I’ll put a worm in your bed. (ELIZABET: I’ll make you chop the vegetables.) CASSIAN: I’ll boil your socks. (ELIZABET: Well! If I knew that’s all it took to get your help with chores.) [He laughs.] CASSIAN: The roof’s leaking again. We could use that water for boiling!
CASSIAN: Liz! Heeeelp!!! Get this thing off of me!! (screams, in the jaws of a wolf)
CASSIAN: (coming home down the road) ELIZAAAAABEEEEEEET!!! (ELIZABET: Oh gracious gods, give me strength. ) CASSIAN I’m so hungry! You ate without me? I swear I saw a ghost dog on the path and I think Old Marle gave me a rock that looks like a can of beans. Can beans make you smell weird? Also I’m missing a boot.
Darrow is Lavendre’s village baker, a stocky, broad shouldered man in his fifties. Flour clings to his beard and rolled sleeves, and he's long since given up on trying to clean it out. He can often be found in the shop, prepping the ovens even before dawn.
Gruff Harrow runs his shop like a quiet anchor at the center of the village. He’s known for his bread and lavender honey tarts. To Elizabet, he's a father figure.
To Cassian, Darrow is an open pocket. The boy steals fruit tarts from him constantly, always sneaking in with grabby hands. Harrow always “fails” to notice. Sometimes, a fresh tart will already be set a little too close to the edge of the counter.
DARROW: Elizabet! Perfect timing, love. The bread’s rising over there. Can you put that new batch in the oven? If I don’t finish icing these rolls for tomorrow we’ll have a catastrophe!
DARROW: And what about you, my dear? Ready for the Reaping Revel tonight? Your eyes on any fellas? (ELIZABET: Ehhh my experience with boys is seeing them wrestling in the mud, NOT dancing.) DARROW: Well maybe you’ll meet someone unexpected who’ll sweep you off your feet, but not into the mud. [He leans in with a wink.] DARROW: Just watch out for Booger Boy.
DARROW: (grabbing attention) Hey! Hey! Over here you Fralkirs (<-- expletive)! Don't touch them you rotten wolves! Hrraaagh!!! (swipes a weapon at the beasts)
Edwarde is the legendary Knight who sealed the darkness. He is still in his mid-thirties, having not ages while he was preserved in the healing crystal coffin known as The Diamond.
Edwarde met Rosalia at the Priest's Acedemy (Name TBD LOL), where both were trained under strict doctrines meant to identify and pair compatible bonds to enhance each other's power.
He is strong and driven to do what is right, regardless of tact and social grace. He may be immature at times, but he comes to be respected by the team for his knowledge and guiding hand.
THE KNIGHT ONLY HAS A FEW LINES IN THE PILOT.

EDWARDE: (flabbergasted) So I'm your...grandfather? (ELIZABET: Um....try...great...great? Grandfather? )
EDWARDE: (a series of attacks. several light attacks, several medium attacks, and some heavy attacks)
EDWARDE: [keenly side-stepping at attack] Have a nice...trip! (smirk) (Sias: (falls into the dirt) That was uncalled for, old man!) (Elizabet: (walks up) Hey! Don’t call my great great great grandpa old man!) EDWARDE: (winces) I think we could do with just “Grandpa, if you ask me. And even that’s pushing it. (Elizabet: Sorry Gr- Grandpa.) (Sias: (taking his arm) Thanks for that bout.) EDWARDE: You got it. (breathes out) Smells like its about to rain. (Sias: Smell the rain? You can smell rain? What kind of power is that?) EDWARDE: Humph. Not a power. Here. Sit down you two. Take a second. (they all sit) EDWARDE: Now. Breathe in. Slowly, Count of ten. With me. (breathes in...then out slowly)
Old Marle is Lavendre’s “harmless” eccentric.
She is an elderly woman with soft pink shawls, unevenly pinned hair, and a cheerful, wandering way of speaking that makes most people assume she’s a loony.
She drifts through the village humming to herself, "misplacing" things she absolutely remembers placing and mumbling to seemingly no one. The townsfolk ignore her mostly, assuming she’s just another old woman. A job well done on Marle's part.
In ages past, she trained at the Priests’ Academy, where she shared a room with Rosalia She has an innate instinct for hidden threats. She was the extroverted life of the party as a student (very similar to Glinda).
Rosalia made Marle promise to protect her hometown, and the people within, including her infant daughter.
Marle accepted.
Now, in Lavendre, she has spent decades fulfilling that promise, to multiple generations.

MARLE: Well met, Elizabet! (ELIZABET How’s your back, Mistress MARLE)? MARLE: I’m not dead yet! (ELIZABET: Let’s keep it that way! MARLE: (good natured) Well, tell Darrow to charge me less for my daily loaves and we’ll see what happens. (ELIZABET: It’s a living!) MARLE: For him! [They both laugh.]
MARLE: (Casting a spell in a sing-song way, or even a quietly sung song) “Step by step on forgotten thread, wake what sleeps but is not dead.”
YOUNG MARLE (late teens): Hello? Do I have the right room? Are you Rosalia? (ROSALIA: Um...yes!) MARLE: Then I have the right room! [MARLE DUMPS HER BAGS] MARLE: (shaking hands quickly and energetically) I’m sure we’ll be fast friends! How can we not! How did your partner pairing go? Is he handsome? Mine’s an absolute troll! [She LAUGHS UPROARIOUSLY.]
Hope is a young fox shifter who can transform between an arctic fox and a human girl, though she never fully belongs to either form. After her mother died, Hope was taken in by a wolf pack and raised among them.
As a child, she occasionally left the wild to visit the humans. She desperately wanted to understand their strange mouth language. During these visits, she formed a friendship with a young Indigenous boy who taught her basic words.
When leaving on one of these visits, a hunter notices and forces the boy to tell him all he knows about her. He tracks her all the way home.
The great hunt enacted, the pack was destroyed...or so she thinks.
She flees, banished by the remaning leader of her clan. She is captured and sold to a travelling circus. The boy is in tears, apologizing to her, but yet its too late to make amends.

KHADIR: (breathing out, exhausted & annoyed) You two always fight like you share the same bad idea? [The twins fight harder. The brother slips a blade through Khadir’s guard, cutting his upper shoulder.] KHADIR: (hissing, steadying himself) Gah… lucky shot. [The girl twirls her spear casually.] (GIRL TWIN: Sorry, boy.) [She doesn’t mean it. Khadir’s focus sharpens.] KHADIR: (snapping forward) Yeah. Enough of your games. [He darts in and *KICKS* the girl back hard. She recoils, clutching her face.] [The brother immediately retaliates, driving Khadir backward] [AMIR (O.S.)]: Enough! I can’t have my warriors torn to shreds before our big moment. Bandage the boy, smart one. KHADIR: (teasing yet slight spite) Yeah… enough~

Though I suppose you might be needing this soon, its bright out after all..) KHADIR: Your hat? (HAT MAN: Oh yes, perfect for keeping out all sort of things.) Khadir: Keep the hat pal. Ugh... (HAT MAN: Suit yourself, but don't come asking for it later.) KHADIR: Wh- ...Whats up with this guy? Come on guys, lets hit the next car.
[They have snuck into a fancy ball, Khadir sees Elizabet in a beautiful dress and hairstyle. They usually clash, but this time...] KHADIR: (under his breath) Wow... Voice Claim: A younger Sunil Malhotra
Arjun is a holy figure to many. To himself however, he's just living a lie.
His uncle made a deal with a demon to make him its vessel, and tricked the cult into accepting him as the reincarnation of some god.
Arjun has a pet flying tiger that he respects. Arjun wants freedom and to live a life of truth, but has no idea what that looks like. Tihari, the tiger, and Arjun escape into the sky, but are quickly attacked by the forces of the demon, at his uncle's command. The two crash into the desert far away from anyone or anything.

ARJUN: (hearing the chants of the worshippers already as he wakes up) (sighs) Another day, another pray. Faaaantastic. (gets out of bed groggily) Can't keep my faithful waiting. (scoffs) Uncle wouldn't stand for that...
ARJUN: (talking to his Winged Tiger) Tiha my friend... (He closes his eyes) I’m tired of lying to everyone Tihari…they deserve to know. All for just a little bit of power in a dying land.”
ARJUN: Out of my way! (GUARD: GRAB HIM!) (Arjun leaps above the guard, and a vase crashes to the ground) ARJUN: Sorry about that! (laughs in freedom) Tiha, its time! [TIHA GROWLS in approval] (ARJUN CLIMBS ON) *climbing efforts* Let's go my friend! Hyat! [TIHARI launches into the air] ARJUN: (laughs in wonder and freedom) The sky feels so alive...
The Man in the Hat is a mysterious man in his early 40s or late 60s, though nobody can ever quite settle on which one.
He always appears where he's needed, but not necessarily wanted. Elizabet, Hope, and Khadir all meet him at different times in their own way. Somehow Elizbaet and Khadir meet him on the SAME day at the SAME time.
What does he know? A friend, or is he a foe?

(ELIZABET: Oh. Hi. I didn’t hear you come in.) THE MAN IN THE HAT: I know. [A beat] (ELIZABET: What can I get you?) [He looks at the bread display like he already decided, just confirming something in his head.] THE MAN IN THE HAT: The loaf of bread over there. That one. (he points) (ELIZABET: This loaf? [She lifts it slightly.] ) THE MAN IN THE HAT: Thats the one. ELIZABET Okay… that’ll be three koina. [He reaches into his coat. Slow, precise. He places exact change on the counter before she finishes speaking.] (ELIZABET: You’re not from around here, are you?) THE MAN IN THE HAT: I’ve been here. [he places a coin...or is a it a rock, on the counter] (ELIZABET: What’s this?) THE MAN IN THE HAT: For later.
(ARJUN is being possessed and forced to fight his friends) (ARJUN: I CAN'T..STOP!) THE MAN IN THE HAT: You can. (ARJUN: I'm already resisting as best I can.) THE MAN IN THE HAT: The best YOU can. All you have to do is ask for help. (ARJUN: *crying* No...I'm- I can't rely on other people) THE MAN IN THE HAT: Arjun...You already have been...this whole time~
THE MAN IN THE HAT (wicked) : (cold and sinister) I see you've failed me... Shadow. *growly threatening whisper* One. Final. Chance. I will grant you my power. [he gives a ring to the Shadow Man] But you won't like what happens next. (he grins evilly, and quietly laughs)
