This casting call is for a fandub of the 2007 Wii game Super Paper Mario. After finishing this game, it quickly skyrocketed onto my list of all-time favourites, and I just had to give something back to it.
~WARNING!~
The entire project will contain major spoilers for all of Super Paper Mario! The game has been out for a long time, so you likely already know everything, but for those who don't, be prepared! This includes in the audition lines, so bear that in mind!
This project will take a lot of dedication, as it will hopefully last a long time. If you wish to participate, please bear in mind that I may need you to voice your character for a significant amount of time.
Any ground rules?
1. Be prepared for a fairly long project.
2. Have Discord! It's how I will keep everyone together.
3. You may audition for as many characters as you like, but you may only be cast as two characters, maximum (and even that is a rare circumstance).
4. For those who have a canonical voice, a voice similar to that would be preferable. But, the ones who don't can be played around with as much as you'd like, so long as you don't stray too far from my description. I'm open to any interpretation of these characters, so go wild!

Thudley is the Pixl that provides Mario with the ground pound ability, and despite only appearing in one scene, has quite a lot of dialogue. Revealed to be a former wrestling star, Thudley will measure up the "girth points" of whichever character is on screen at the time, resulting in some fairly humorous dialogue. It is evident that he's very passionate about his job.
"HEY! In case you ain't heard, I throw a lot of girth around these parts. And I'm gonna check you out to make sure you got the weight to hang with me."
"Any fool that gets in your way and you just HAVE to girth him up! Love it! Smash and squish those lightweights! You're goin' places with girth like that, and I wanna come along for the ride."
Fleep is a Pixl discovered on Planet Blobule, and is quite...unique. He tends to sing instead of speaking, finishing sentences with "amore". Though, he isn't given a lot of screen time.
Fleep has an Italian accent, though that is the only noteworthy part of his voice.
"RELIEF! Eeet's a paper miiiracle! Fleep is a-feeeeeling good! You bring Fleep the happy? Fleep has been a-waiting so long for you, amore! Si, for this momento!"
"On the back side of the sad is the happy! We will find it! You and Fleep, amore!"
This game has a lot of one-off characters, all over the place. While I do specifically need some Toad lines from this page, I don't think it'd be necessary to cast each of these characters individually. So, if you'd like to help out the project by giving some extra characters a voice, apply here!

In-between each level of the game, there is a small piece of narration, to welcome the player to the next stage. Additionally, the narrator will be reading any messages intended for the player.
"Mario was called upon once again to save the world...no small task. Could he prevent Count Bleck from pulling off his sinister plot? Would Mario reunite with Princess Peach? A truly inter-dimensional adventure was about to begin..."
"A frigid wind blew through the dim and drafty corridors of Castle Bleck. Bowser, Peach...and even brave Luigi were gone. Mario was the only hero left. It was up to Mario to stop the dark prophecy. Every world hung in balance. What thrilling conclusion awaited our hero? Mario ran to the count's inner sanctum, his mustache fluttering in the breeze..."
Luigi goes through a lot in Super Paper Mario. As per usual, he is the cowardly sidekick with a heart of gold. But unfortunately, he spends a lot of the story under Count Bleck, Nastasia and Dimentio's control, as the evil Mr. L. In this hypnotised state, he has an extreme confidence boost, though he isn't the most competent villain. Mr. L is incredibly eccentric and high energy, just like most typical Mario villains.
I'd like a voice close to Luigi's canonical voice, though perhaps toned back a tad, to make it sound more natural in a fandub setting.
(Threatening, attempting to save the day) "Oh, no! I don’t give my name to scoundrels! Just watch as Luigi punishes you for your badness! HERE I GO!"
(Starts out as nervous, slowly gaining confidence) "The G-Great Luigi, you say? A... A daring defender? ...Me? Then I've got no choice! Luigi must spring into action! My fans need me!"
(as Mr. L, confident and cocky) "Oh, me? Just one of Count Bleck's more promising minions. The Green Thunder... MR. L!"
Tippi plays the role of guide for the majority of Super Paper Mario. She's a being known as a Pixl, which is similar in appearance and ability to a fairy. She's fairly reserved, not being one to talk about her past life as Lady Timpani. Though, her kind and caring nature is incredibly clear. She immediately gains a strong connection with the heroes, especially Mario. However, she has a lot of trouble trusting temporary companions.
I imagine Tippi with a fairly mystical, mid-low voice. Near the end of the game, the voice actress will need to be prepared to showcase a lot of varying emotions in a short timespan.
(Pensive, with a sense of urgency) "Then that means Count Bleck is even now beginning to form The Void... We haven't much time... You must come with me... Yes, if your friends are to be saved, you must come..."
(Overflowing with joy) "Mario... I was just so happy when I saw that you'd come to save me. Please... Take it."
(Tippi is finally at peace.) "Don't say another word...As long as I am with you, nothing else matters."
Bowser starts off as his usual self in Super Paper Mario: narcissistic, commanding and constantly planning evil deeds. But, in this story, he is one of the protagonists, siding with Mario and Co. to defeat a bigger threat. Despite never fully warming up to the other heroes, he does show a surprising amount of compassion for Princess Peach and his army, and goes to serious lengths to protect them.
Bowser has a very deep, rough, booming voice. Something similar to his in-game voice would be preferable!
(Angered, almost sulking) "How many times have I told those idiots?! If you're the last in, LOCK THE GATE!"
(Mockingly) "So this is where that dweeb Francis lives? Pffgght! What's this castle got over mine?!"
"Oh, please! Come on, people! With me here, you don't need anybody else, seriously! Trust me, any problem comes up, I'll stomp it into next week! I'll Bowserize it!"
Despite usually appearing as the damsel in distress (and even starting as one in the prologue), Princess Peach is quite the fighter in this game. Sassy, strong-willed, and always determined, Peach will never give up on her goal to save all worlds, and fights for what is right. She owns up to the tragedy being her fault in some part, and vows to do whatever it takes to make it up to Mario, her friends, the people of Flipside, and all worlds.
For this role, I'd like a less exaggerated version of the modern Peach voice. One with much more strength in it. But besides that, it should still be close to her voice.

(Determined; Peach is finally standing up for herself, after being told she should stay put.) "Well, I can't just sit here and let everyone else go off to save the worlds, now, can I? After all, The Void that is spreading in the sky is my fault. Mine and Bowser's...So I'm going, and that's final! I've made my decision."
(Peach has been seriously angered) "Y-You... Very well. If you insist, I'll give you what you so richly deserve." ... "Stay out of this! I am a PRINCESS, and she has thrown mud at my dignity! You two leave me be! UNDERSTOOD?!"
"Oh, I must have caused you all so much trouble. I'm so sorry...but I'm so very happy to see all of you again! I'll try and do my best to make up for time lost!"
Count Bleck is the primary antagonist of Super Paper Mario. He has quite a strong personality, often speaking in the third person, as though he is announcing or narrating himself. His goal is to destroy all worlds and leave them in ruin, which he does all with a smile on his face. It is clear that he is incredibly charismatic, as even without the use of Nastasia's brainwashing, he has several very loyal minions who care about him more than his plan. The true Bleck, or Blumiere as he was once called, is not evil. He's rough around the edges, and quite outwardly cold, but has a serious soft spot for Lady Timpani, the woman he loved. She is the reason that he decided to destroy everything; his grief for her caused a serious rage.
Count Bleck should have a mid-low voice, with perhaps a hint of roughness. A lot of energy should be brought to this role.
"BLEH HEH HEH HEH! BLECK! Yes, all precisely as written in the Dark Prognosticus! Already it is unleashed! The Chaos Heart!"
(Starts out slightly solemn, before immediately regaining energy.) "Fools... Pointless acts like these will earn you only pain...from Count Bleck! Very well. As the Chaos Heart is secured, this ragtag group now lacks use."
(Count Bleck has found peace after all that has happened.) "It is too late. Count Bleck has done so much evil... It must end. Just knowing that you are still alive... And knowing that the world you still live in will continue... It gives me peace."
Dimentio is Count Bleck's master of dimensions, and a self-proclaimed "pleaser of crowds". Despite appearances, he is incredibly intelligent and one to be feared. His magical attacks can be quite devastating when he truly means business, and it's clear he's planning something behind the scenes. However, he carries a casual aura, always toying with the protagonists at every turn. Even in the darker moments, Dimentio never seems to be concerned that Count Bleck's (or his own) plans might be failing, simply laughing and carrying on.
I imagine Dimentio's voice to be quite mid-high for a male, with a high amount of charisma and charm. He is almost always incredibly cheerful, and this should show through the way he talks.
"So very nice to meet you...and your mustache! I am Count Bleck's master of dimensions, the pleaser of crowds... I am... Dimentio! Remember the name well..."
"Ahhhhhhhh... Do you not tire of collecting those worn-out, tiresome Pure Hearts? I am not violent by nature, you know. I'd prefer to settle this peacefully, in fact. Say, for instance, you wished to go back to your world. I could do that for you..."
(Tippi: Dimentio?! You're...alive?)
"Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Of course. This is my moment. Even if the count dies, the Chaos Heart won't disappear if I continue to control it! But I needed the power of the Pure Hearts to beat him...I couldn't do that on my own."
As Count Bleck's personal assistant, right hand gal and secretary of sorts, Nastasia is cold, calculated and intelligent. She rarely lets her true emotions slip through, only speaking in basic, disinterested manners. The only time she truly showcases her emotions is when the Count is involved; she's incredibly attached to him and protective of him, even going so far as to break down crying when his life is threatened.
Nastasia should have a mid-low pitch voice, with quite a monotone, professional and yet almost bored tone. Though, the actor must be prepared to showcase a lot of emotion when the time calls for it, whilst still keeping the general voice the same.
(Her usual, professional tone) "Yeah, you know what? I'm gonna have to tell you that your orders mean nothing. See, they've already sworn eternal allegiance to Count Bleck, 'K? And now you need to, so I'll just go ahead and pencil you in for a 10 o'clock brainwashing."
(Nastasia's desperation begins to seep through) "Count Bleck! If... Um... If that Pixl is who you think it is...There's still time! You can still stop the prophecy from destroying everything! Yeah, because, if that's really her... If she's alive, you have to stop all this!"
(Completely breaking down; this is her truest feelings.) "WAAAAH! C-C-C-Count! NOOOOOOOO! I... I'm all alone! What am I to do now?!"
O'Chunks is the muscle of Castle Bleck; very strong, but with little brains. It seems it takes him a long time to process and comprehend what's going on around him. He is incredibly loyal to Count Bleck for reasons we don't fully know, and will do anything to prove himself to his master. O'Chunks has an extreme eagerness for battle and fighting, always showing a "warrior spirit". This all blends into an extreme sense of honour, which is incredibly respectable in its own right.
O'Chunks should have a very rough, mid-pitch voice, with a prominent and exaggerated Scottish accent. He's often very loud and shouty, so try to show that too!
"O'Chunks is me name! An' I'm no common thug, lass. I thug for the count o' counts, Count Bleck hisself! One word from me Blecky-boy, an' I come teh make yeh feel some hammage!"
"Enough is enough already! It's time teh thunder down from on high 'an deliver a beatin' o' the ages. CHUNK ON IT!"
(Reassuring, though ending with his usual loudness) "'Ey now, me wee Nastasia... I'm believin' the count is still alive, too. An' if he is alive, lass, we wouldn't want to be shamin' 'im with blubberin'! So pull it together, 'ey?"
Merlon is the secondary guide of the game, and the owner of the Light Prognosticus. He spends his time in Flipside, studying the prophecy for any information that could help Mario and friends. He's shown to be incredibly kind, saving the lives of several people who mysteriously find their way to Flipside.
I imagine Merlon with the typical wise old man voice, with quite a lot of softness to it.
"Excellent! You truly are the hero of the book of legend! My eyes never deceive! So...Ahem! Mario, our brave hero! Take...THIS!"
(Solemn) "Farewells are bittersweet...but as long as you live, you can never escape them. To feel sadness is to live...but as long as you are alive, the future is a blank page."
(Full of surprise and relief) "MARIO?! But I saw Dimentio end your game... Then Tippi said you were here, so I thought I'd come and take a look, but... Wow... You're truly alive..."
Merlumina is the guardian of the second Pure Heart, but very little is known about her. She made it her duty to pass on the legend of the Pure Hearts and the Purity Heart to the four heroes, and does so with a bit too much enthusiasm. Despite only being around for a short time, she talks a fair amount in her scene, even going as far as to put Mario to sleep with her long, overly drawn out story.
It's difficult to describe a fitting voice for Merlumina, as not much is known about her personality, though I think it should be fairly old sounding, with some eccentricity.
"Welcome, hero. My name is Merlumina. I am a dormant soul... I have waited long to give you the Pure Heart."
(This is said after Merlumina spends several minutes describing the prophecy in detail.) "And that is all I have to say on the matter. Were you listening carefully? Excellent... I did tell the short version, so I wasn't sure if you would fully understand."
Merlee is the guardian of the third Pure Heart, and briefly returns in the final chapter in the form of an illusion. Please be willing to reprise your role!
Merlee is an interesting woman, always speaking in rhymes, with very cryptic phrases. Though she is interviewed in Chapter 2, very little was revealed about her personality, as the questions were intentionally vague. She seems to be quite cowardly despite appearing otherwise, as she immediately takes cover when her Manor is taken over.
Merlee likely has a fairly low, eccentric and mystical voice. Despite not being around too much, she has a surprising amount of lines!
"I must suggest you flee. Come and find the real me. I am hiding, look and see!
If you can, my magic may weaken her and win the day! Hurry, hurry, don't delay!"
(This is Mimi pretending to be Merlee. Give it a slight edge.) "Oh, please, you make me gag. I am hot; no need to brag. And you...Well, you're a hag."
Not counting Tippi, Thoreau is the first Pixl to join Mario's party. His only dialogue is when he is first discovered, so this is quite a small role.
According to Tippi, Thoreau sounds quite posh and "upper-class", so please reflect this in his voice! In terms of tone, I'd say mid tone would be fine.
"SWEET FREEDOM!
Wait a moment... If I have been set free, the legendary hero must have done it! I expressed concern when the Ancients stuffed me in that chest 1,500 years ago... But it seems my fears were quite unfounded. The hero has finally arrived!"
"Glorious day! Consider me fully at your disposal. Now, to adventure and beyond!"
Boomer is the second Pixl to be discovered in the game, and only has dialogue during his discovery. Boomer has, well, an explosive personality, being quite boisterous and full of energy.
I'd imagine Boomer to be quite naturally loud, but not shout-y, with very quick speech. A fairly young sounding voice would be very fitting, so anyone can audition for this role.
"Good vibes! Them vibes set off my blow-stuff-up sensors! You like explodin'? Sss-POW! I ain't sensed real good blow-stuff-up vibes in...1,500 years! Sss-POOOM!"
"Got it, got it, GOT IT! SSSS-BOOOOOOOOOOOOM! You got some tasty vibes!"
Slim is the third Pixl discovered, only having dialogue when he's found. Unfortunately, Slim isn't around long enough to give us an idea of his personality.
What we do know is that he has an American Southerner's accent, so please try to play this up in his dialogue!
(Ever-so-quietly) "Know the secret?"
(Slim appears) "'CUZ I DOOOO!"
"So, do ya know the secret, pard? Well? Do ya? Iffen you close yer peepers...and imagine real hard...that the world's gone... Why, it's just about the biggest dern thrill ever!"
Fracktail is the boss of level 1-4, after Dimentio meddles with their database. As a robot, Fracktail has a very monotone voice, simply speaking in error messages for the second half of the scene.
The robotic effect is optional! If you wish to include one, you may, but I can add that myself if I need to.
"WAIT. SCAN INITIALIZED. RED CAP DETECTED. BLUE OVERALLS DETECTED. LEVEL 5 MUSTACHE DETECTED. INCREDIBLE. POSSIBLE SUBJECT IDENTIFICATION. BUT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE. HOLD YOUR POSITION. SEARCHING DATA BANKS..."
"FORGIVE ME, HERO. I AM CALLED FRACKTAIL. MY ONLY PURPOSE IS TO DEFEND THE PURE HEART FROM LAWLESS INTRUDERS. YOU ARE LATE. I HAVE WAITED THOUSANDS OF YEARS FOR YOUR ARRIVAL."
Bestovius is one of the first characters Mario meets on his journey after leaving Flipside, and grants him the ability of flipping. He's incredibly skeptical and oddly sneaky, attempting using the arrival of the hero for his own gain.
Bestovius likely has the voice of the more stereotypical crazy old man, being incredibly eccentric.
"Hah! You are garbed in the rich cloth of the hero of prophecy! You must be the great...HERO...impersonator!"
"These heroes think they can get away with shaking people down for free skills! A mere 10,000 coins should be nothing for a hero of the universe. What do you say?"
Francis is the primary antagonist of the third chapter, but only appears in Chapter 3-1 and 3-4. Though, he does return briefly in chapter 8, so please be willing to reprise your role in the future for a short time!
Francis is, as described in game, "the nerd to end all nerds". He is constantly obsessed with technology, video games, anime and "hot babes". In the story, his goal is to keep Tippi (or Francine as he dubs her) all to himself, as he is quite fascinated with her. It is only through the arrival of Princess Peach that he is even willing to talk with the main heroes in the first place.
I'm sure you can use your imagination to figure out Francis' voice. As per a lot of the minor characters in this game, it would be quite stereotypical of the nerd characters you find in media. Go wild, have fun with it!
"HI-TECHNICAAAAAAAL! I caught a super-rare pixelated butterfly! My friends at digibutter.nerr are going to freak when they get word of this find!"
"O-O-Oh... O-Oh my gosh... It's... It's a h-hot babe...HOT BABE IN ROOM!"
"NOOOOOO! MY GRAPHICS CAAAAAAAARD! That was the only known copy for the Nerr2Babe patch, and now it's gone forever! Nerrr... Real babes are scary!"
Squirps serves as Mario's guide in Chapter 4, guiding him to the fifth Pure Heart. He is quite childish and ambiguous, and incredibly demanding, taking charge for most of the chapter. This causes Tippi to distrust him for most of the adventure. Despite how he appears, Squirps is incredibly loyal, especially to his mother, the queen. Throughout the chapter, he does everything he can to relay her message.
Squirps often uses nonsense words that begin with "squ-", hinting to an alien language. Like Count Bleck, he refers to himself in the third person.
As quite a childish character, I imagine Squirps sounding like quite a hyper, higher-pitched young boy.
"You! You heed the captain! You are a space grunt now, and that is the ONLY rule! Your only responses should be "Yes, sir!" and "Gotcha!" Understand, squirkle?"
"Phew! Now that Squirps is all relaxed, Squirps feels kinda...tired...Mother...I did my best, right? Are you...
proud...of me?"
Toad only has a few lines at the very beginning of the game. In fact, the cast audition would likely be all you'd need to record! I just need someone to help out with this particular extra first and foremost.
