BlackwoodTales(new cast and recast)

BlackwoodTales(new cast and recast)

Project Overview

What is Blackwood Tales

Blackwood Tales is a fantasy and sci-fi audio drama, with romance woven through its story.

Ortaiga Blackwood is a young man with seemingly useless magic, living in a kingdom where magic is hunted and the old ways are being erased. When his brother is struck down by a monster, Ortaiga is pulled into a fight far bigger than his small village. It reaches from ancient forests and the last of the dragons all the way to the stars, where a living starship, a powerful Galactic Coalition, and a war history tried to forget are waiting.

Along the way he forms alliances, makes enemies, and becomes tangled in stories far larger than his own. Every character he meets carries their own history, motives, and consequences.

A nine-tailed Kitsune with violet eyes, far older than she looks and usually a step ahead of everyone around her. She's elegant, sharp-tongued and openly amused by the people she travels with. She calls Ortaiga "little kit," slips into people's minds just to see how they react, and swears "upon the light of her soul" when she truly needs to be believed. Under the charm is a past she isn't proud of. She has manipulated and deceived people, and she followed expectations that got people killed. She carries that weight. Long ago she chose to become something better. Now she has made herself a harder promise: to live honestly, even though she learned long ago that honesty frightens people more than lies. Her deepest fear isn't death or hatred but loneliness, the certainty that anyone who truly understands her will eventually pull away. She is learning, slowly and uncomfortably, to let people close anyway.

Voice Direction

Solare sounds precise, formal and slightly old-fashioned ("I shan't," "Very well," "Indeed"), with a touch of theatre. She always knows how she's coming across. Her default is amused control: dry sarcasm, playful teasing, and a laugh that rarely sounds caught off guard. When things turn dangerous, the play drops away at once and she becomes clipped and commanding ("Close the door." "Everybody link hands."). Her rare vulnerable moments are the heart of the role. The polish cracks, her voice shakes and she admits what she doesn't know, but she pushes through instead of hiding behind a joke. The challenge is moving between all three without losing her elegant core.

Additional Notes
  • Some intimate scenes between Solare, Rheea and Ortaiga may occur. If you are not comfortable with this, please refrain from auditioning for this character.

  • Some narration will be required for this role. Solare narrates scenes from her own point of view, including some emotionally heavy material.

  • (quiet, almost afraid, vulnerible) "You think the hard part is lying well. It isn't. The hard part is being believed when, for once, you are telling the truth."

  • (narration) "I experienced the utmost shock when the tall, black-haired grandson of Tobias Blackwood stepped into my clearing, or what had once been my mother's shrine. That shock deepened considerably when he read the runes etched along the cliff's edge as though they were his native tongue. Intriguing."

A Frost Luperin warrior, nearly eight feet tall, with a thick gray coat and deep red eyes that are rare among her kind. She is Rheea's best fighter, and her crew calls her "the general." She is their best strategist, a born leader trained to command an army in defense of others. Surren is disciplined, direct and fiercely protective, and she acts as both shield and moral anchor for the crew. She values honesty, loyalty and emotional strength above brute force, and she believes real leadership comes from facing your failures, not pretending they never happened. That belief is now being tested. Surren and her crew served the Coalition, and she has ended innocent lives, something she once vowed never to do. She does not hide from that. She carries it, and she chooses to keep moving forward because doing nothing changes nothing. Under the armor is a dry, deadpan sense of humor and deep affection for the people she fights beside.

Voice Direction

Surren sounds composed, steady and physically assured. Her presence carries weight without effort, and her voice stays controlled under pressure. She is not emotionally distant, but she is tightly regulated. She rarely wastes words and rarely shows vulnerability openly. In tense moments she is clipped, commanding and a little intimidating. With her crew, the warmth comes through in small ways: deadpan sarcasm, a short laugh, a soft but stern word when someone she loves is falling apart. Her heaviest moments are quiet ones, when she admits what she has done without letting her voice break completely. A lower, fuller voice suits her size, but control and presence matter more than depth.

Additional Notes
  • A romantic storyline involving Surren may develop in future episodes, and it may include intimate scenes. If you are not comfortable with this, please refrain from auditioning for this character.

  • Surren may also narrate scenes from her own point of view in future episodes.

The storyteller of Blackwood Tales. Most of the story is told by the characters themselves, in their own words and from their own heads. The Narrator steps in where the story needs a voice from outside them: a monster hunter stalking through a magic-soaked forest, a nightmare vision of a battlefield, a man who keeps his worries hidden. The Narrator isn't a character with opinions, but they aren't neutral either. They set the tension, carry the action and hold the dread, and they decide where the listener's heart rate sits.

Voice Direction

Clear, grounded and immersive, with a natural storytelling warmth that never tips into a cold "audiobook" read. The Narrator has to cover a wide range: quiet, suspenseful build-up in one moment, then fast, punchy action with tight rhythm the next. Then slow, heavy dread, where a single short line ("Doren opened his eyes to death.") has to land like a weight. Pacing is the core skill of this role: knowing when to let a beat breathe and when to drive straight through. The Narrator should support the characters, not compete with them. The voice can be any gender or age, as long as it is distinctive, steady and easy to listen to for long stretches.

Additional Notes
  • Some intimate scenes may require narration. If you are not comfortable with this, please refrain from auditioning for this role.

  • Some scenes contain graphic violence and disturbing imagery, including battlefield and death imagery. If you are not comfortable with this, please refrain from auditioning for this role.

  • Narration sections can be long, so consistent mic technique and sound across sessions matter.

  • This role may involve re-recording earlier narration so the voice stays consistent across the series.

About the character

Mira is a Vulperin pilot with sandy-brown fur and spiralling, nebula-like markings, the sign of a family line of guardians. Her crew calls her the heart of the group: the most compassionate of them, and the one who feels everything most deeply. Her low whistle has been passed down through her family from guardian to guardian, and it is the oldest thing she owns.

The sound we're after

Tender, breathy, and a little mournful. This is the instrument Mira plays when she is alone with her thoughts, or remembering where she came from. It should feel old and personal, closer to a lullaby or a lament than a performance. Slow airs, gentle ornamentation, and room to breathe matter more than speed.

What the role involves

Accompanying Mira's voice actor when she sings, playing short solo themes, and recording underscore for quiet emotional scenes. Some improvisation will be required. I have made music before but I am not a professional, so direction will come as moods and scene descriptions rather than sheet music. I'm looking for someone comfortable shaping a melody from a description and offering ideas of their own.

Audition request

A short improvised piece, around 30 to 60 seconds: Mira, alone in her ship's cockpit at night with the stars drifting past, playing her family's whistle and thinking about home.

Technical notes

Please record clean and dry, with no added reverb or effects, as these will be mixed into the audio drama later. Lossless format (WAV or FLAC) preferred. Keep background noise to a minimum. Separate takes are better than one long edited mix, so the pieces can be fitted to scenes.

About the character

Mira is a Vulperin pilot with sandy-brown fur and spiralling, nebula-like markings, the sign of a family line of guardians. She is fiercely loyal and deeply compassionate. Her violin was a gift from her closest friend, Rheea, given when the two first bonded as children, and she has carried it ever since.

The sound we're after

Warm and singing, able to move from tender to aching. This is the instrument of friendship and found family, so it can be brighter and more lyrical than her whistle, but it should still carry weight. Expressive phrasing and a voice-like tone matter more than virtuosity.

What the role involves

Accompanying Mira's voice actor when she sings, playing short solo themes, and recording underscore for emotional scenes, including later duets with another musician. Some improvisation will be required. I have made music before but I am not a professional, so direction will come as moods and scene descriptions rather than sheet music. I'm looking for someone comfortable shaping a melody from a description and offering ideas of their own.

Audition request

A short improvised piece, around 30 to 60 seconds: Mira playing the violin her oldest friend gave her, after hearing that friend may still be alive somewhere.

Technical notes

Please record clean and dry, with no added reverb or effects, as these will be mixed into the audio drama later. Lossless format (WAV) preferred. Keep background noise to a minimum. Separate takes are better than one long edited mix, so the pieces can be fitted to scenes.

About the character

Cursman Blackflame is a seven-tailed fox with fire magic, living alone in a cabin of living trees deep in the forest. He protects a village that resents him for what he is, and he keeps protecting it anyway. He is direct, sincere, and quietly intense. His guitar came from his mother.

The sound we're after

Warm, honest, and grounded, the sound of evenings spent alone with no one to play for. Fingerpicking and gentle strumming suit him best. When the moment calls for it, the guitar should be able to drop low and intense, carrying real weight. Folk and acoustic styles fit well.

What the role involves

Accompanying Cursman's voice actor when he sings, playing short solo themes, and recording underscore for quiet or emotional scenes, including later duets with another musician. Some improvisation will be required. I have made music before but I am not a professional, so direction will come as moods and scene descriptions rather than sheet music. I'm looking for someone comfortable shaping a melody from a description and offering ideas of their own.

Audition request

A short improvised piece, around 30 to 60 seconds: Cursman sitting outside his cabin after the village has turned him away again, playing his mother's guitar until the anger fades.

His ocarina, a simple clay instrument, came from his late father, and it is one of the few pieces of him Cursman has left.

The sound we're after

Round, hollow, and haunting, with an earthy, folk-like simplicity. It should feel handmade and intimate, like something played softly to the forest rather than to an audience. Simple melodies, held notes, and a sense of space suit it best.

What the role involves

Playing short solo themes and recording underscore for quiet, reflective scenes, with occasional accompaniment for Cursman's singing. Some improvisation will be required. I have made music before but I am not a professional, so direction will come as moods and scene descriptions rather than sheet music. I'm looking for someone comfortable shaping a melody from a description and offering ideas of their own.

Audition request

A short improvised piece, around 30 to 60 seconds: Cursman in the forest at dawn, playing his father's ocarina while the trees around his cabin wake up.

Technical notes

Please record clean and dry, with no added reverb or effects, as these will be mixed into the audio drama later. Lossless format (WAV) preferred. Keep background noise to a minimum. Separate takes are better than one long edited mix, so the pieces can be fitted to scenes.
