Andrew Ryan is a complex man whose most defining trait is his egomania and objectivist ideals, which he spreads to all of Rapture. He is self-assured to the point of arrogance, which also makes him an inspirational figure to others. A workaholic with a strong desire to be precise and controlling of everything and everyone around him, Ryan is driven to win and looks down on those who don't share his philosophy and work ethic. When Rapture's society began to collapse under its own weight due to the growing problems of civil discomfort, smuggling and contraband, splicing, and eventually all-out war, Ryan slowly changed from an honorable, earnest leader into an oppressive tyrant. As the conflict with Atlas escalated, Ryan's methods to keep control over the populace became more extreme and ruthless, culminating in using mind-controlling pheromones through Rapture's air system to subjugate the city's spliced inhabitants to his will.

(Stating) “I am Andrew Ryan, and I am here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?"
(Serious) "It has been brought to my attention that some citizens have discovered ways to... "hack" the vending machines. I should not need to remind each and every citizen of Rapture that free enterprise is the foundation upon which our society has been established. Parasites will be punished."
(Concerned) "I am told that the people grow tense and isolated in the absence of the sun. Now… they clamor for a psychiatrist. Do they miss the state censor, I wonder? Wartime seizure of private assets? Or the Cheka police, vanishing them in the night? Regardless, this Lamb woman is said to be the foremost practitioner in her "field." Fine. If she can quiet the rattling of the great chain's weakest links… I will leave her to it."
Because of his great renown in the field of cosmetic surgery, Steinman was one of those invited to Rapture by Andrew Ryan. There, he set up a medical practice in the Medical Pavilion level of Rapture and offered beauty to those who could afford it. When ADAM became available, Steinman saw it as an opportunity to revolutionize his field, making it possible for surgeons to truly "sculpt" flesh with ease. However, the negative side-effects of repeated ADAM use soon caught up with Steinman, and his mind deteriorated. A perfectionist, Steinman fell in love with his work, so much so that he became obsessed with human anatomy. Wanting to become a "Picasso of Surgery" Steinman began to mutilate his unfortunate patients' bodies in horrific ways, usually resulting in death.

(Infatuated) "Aphrodite is walking the halls -- shimmering, like a scalpel… "Steinman," she calls, "Steinman! I have what you're looking for! Just open your eyes!" And when I see her, she cuts me into a thousand beautiful pieces"
(Explaining) "Not only are those little girls veritable ADAM factories, they're nearly indestructible. They regenerate any wounded flesh with stem versions of the dead cells. But their relationship with the implanted slugs is symbiotic... if you harvest the slug, the host will die. "So you see, it's not like killing," Tenenbaum said. "It's more like removing a terminal patient from life support."
(Angry and Psychotic) "What can I do with this one, Aphrodite? She - won't - stay - still! I want to make them beautiful, but they always turn out wrong! That one… too fat! This one… too tall! This one… too symmetrical! And now- What's this, goddess? An intruder! He's ugly! Ugly, ugly, ugly!"
