Arknights Fandub: Records of Originium - Rhine Lab

Project Overview

This is a noncommercial, fan-made dub of the Arknights Records of Originium - Rhine Lab manhua, a side story to the Arknights mobile game. This project was started purely out of love for the game–it can not and will not be monetized in any way. All lines come from the Official English translation of the manhua, which can be found here: Rhodes Island's Records Of Originium - Rhine Lab. It should be noted that the official English translation of the manhua is still ongoing as of this casting call—the extra chapters have not been translated yet—by the time casting ends, the entire manhua will likely be fully translated. In total the manhua has a short prologue, 9 chapters and 3 short extra chapters. This dub will be released on YouTube.


It is important to note that I will not be casting based on how well your voice matches the official voice(s) of the character in question!

Many of the major characters in this manhua are not playable in the original game and do not have official voices anyway. Even for those that do have official voices, I highly encourage you to try different interpretations of these characters’ voices rather than trying to do an impression of the original voice. This is the reason why I will not provide voice references for any playable character.


Arknights is a tower defense mobile game created by Hypergryph. The story takes place on an alternate post-apocalyptic version of Earth called Terra. The most notable feature of Terra is the presence of the metal Originium*, which allows people to use “magic,” or Arts. Too much exposure to Originium, however, can cause a person to become Infected with a deadly disease called Oripathy. As of the game’s events, the disease is incurable, and Infected are shunned in Terran society. Arknights follows the point of view of a pharmaceutical company called Rhodes Island, which seeks to find a way to cure Oripathy once and for all. Records of Originium - Rhine Lab is a side story manhua that focuses on three characters connected to Rhine Lab (Saria, Silence, and Ifrit), a research institute partnered with Rhodes Island. The manhua details Rhine Lab’s horrific human experimentation culminating in an incident called “The Diɑbolic Crisis**,” after which the three characters mentioned above flee to Rhodes Island. The manhua flip-flops back and forth between the past and present, where Ifrit befriends an Infected stowaway in Rhodes.

TW: This manhua contains blood, violence, death by burning, death by desiccation/shriveled corpses, human experimentation/torture, insectoid monsters, and light graphic content. If you are uncomfortable with these sorts of scenes, please be wary of reading the manhua and watching the final dub!

No prior knowledge of Arknights is needed for this dub; however having a bit of context on the game’s lore (outside of the brief summary I give here) will help you a lot, especially if you are cast!


Because I am familiar with all of these characters, I will be providing voice direction for this project. Additionally, I may self-cast for a role if I feel it is needed; we will see by the deadline.


Feel free to resubmit auditions before the due date if you are unsatisfied with your performance for a particular role or if you wanted to try something different for a character. 


Finally–and I cannot emphasize this enough–no roles will be cast before the deadline (midnight PST on June 2nd). So there is no need to rush if you aren’t currently in a good position to record! A deadline extension will also be given if necessary. Feel free to reach out to me via DM's if you have any questions!


REQUIREMENTS

All open positions

- If you are cast, please be prompt in communication over Discord. As I am a university student myself, I understand that we all have other commitments, and am more than happy to accommodate if the need arises. However, communication is key! Do not suddenly disappear for a long period of time with no explanation or you will be recast (VA’s) or simply taken off the project (editors).

- Please be civil and easy to work with (if you have lines that need to be retaken, etc.)! 

- Leave your Discord in your audition notes! Project communications will be done via Discord.


Voice actors

- You will not be casted for any role if you are below 14 years of age. While I would prefer that only those 16+ audition for this project, if you are younger but believe that you have the responsibility to handle the workload and that your voice suits a particular character, you may still audition. 

- Please have a good, clear microphone. Make sure we can hear you properly and that there is minimal background noise. 

- Also, several of the major roles will be required to shout in this project, so please be aware of that!

- Please do multiple takes of each line in AABBCC format. 

- Submit auditions as audio files; .wav files are preferred but I can work with .mp3.


Editors

- Please submit a portfolio (nothing fancy needed, a link to a Google Doc would work!) listing your past work and your specialties if you are applying as a video editor. 

- As this is a manhua, editing will not be very complicated but I would like this dub to look as nice as possible! My plan at the moment is to use a screen recorder to get footage of each panel as it comes along and sync it to the needed audio/music/sound, but I am open to more detailed discussion.

- Again, I will not accept applications from any editors who are below the age of 14.

  • Deadline Extension for Callbacks

    Hi everyone! I've received notices from some auditioners who were called back being concerned about the project being listed as closed on CCC since the original deadline was June 2nd. I'd like to clarify that as of now, none of the named roles (including Leon, Albert, and Lammy) have been cast yet as not all callbacks have been turned in. The deadline for those is still June 10th. I've since updated the "official" deadline on CCC to reflect this. I sincerely apologize if I worried anyone!

  • Callbacks + Other Info

    Hello everyone! The deadline is right around the corner and I'm so excited to get started on the project! One last reminder that I will be going through auditions tomorrow and will start to send out callbacks. I also want to clarify that even if you do not receive a callback, you might still be being considered for a named role (no callback may just mean that I had no major criticisms about your audition). Additionally, you will not necessarily be casted for a named role even if you are called back. The callbacks are just a way for me to hear something different from you or to let you tweak your original performance!

    Again, you can submit callbacks directly on CCC or you can send them to me privately. The tentative due date for callbacks is still the 10th of June, but depending on how quickly everyone can get them in, the casting date may be moved up :)

    One last thing: even if you don’t get a named role, don’t be disheartened! After the main cast has been finalized, you may get a message from me asking if you would like to voice some of the many background characters!

  • Project Logistics Update!

    Hello, everyone, I hope you’ve all been doing well! I would like to give a big thank you to everyone who has already auditioned–it’s mind-boggling that there have already been so many great submissions! I’ve been going over the project logistics and have some updates to share with you all:

    • While the original deadline of June 2nd remains unchanged, I plan to conduct callbacks for VAs the day after! This will be a very simple system: if I feel that your voice might fit a particular character that you did not already audition for, I will reach out to you privately and ask you to try for that role! Alternatively, I may have enjoyed your performance as a certain character but want you to re-read the audition lines in a different way (be it tone, pitch, etc.). Callbacks will only be conducted for named characters. However, everyone who submits an audition has the chance to be called back, regardless of what role you initially tried out for!

    • After all callback requests have been sent out, I will give you one week to record and submit everything. You may choose to do this privately or on CCC; it’s your choice. If you need an extension, please let me know as soon as possible if you are called back! The initial due date for callbacks will be June 10th, but this may change depending on how quickly all callbacks are turned in. Casting results will be announced either June 11th or the day after the adjusted callback deadline! 

    • As there haven’t been any auditions for the Female Background Characters or the Rhodes Island Operators, I encourage those with more feminine voices who have already auditioned to also try for these roles!

Ifrit is a young woman who was rescued by Saria and brought to Rhine Lab for treatment. Due to her severe Oripathy, she was given an experimental treatment method at the lab. However, unbeknownst to Ifrit, the researchers overseeing the treatment implanted her with flame demon shards in the hopes of turning her into a living weapon. One day, Ifrit lost control of her powers and destroyed much of Rhine. She was nearly killed and was smuggled away to Rhodes Island by Silence.

Ifrit is extremely hot-headed and she often behaves like a petulant child: she loves candy, hates doing homework, and is very temperamental. Despite all of this, Ifrit does her hardest to keep her emotions and powers under control because she doesn't want to trouble Saria and Silence. Ifrit dearly loves both of them, but because Saria is not allowed to see Ifrit in the present, she believes that Saria is angry at her for causing the Rhine Lab accident.

Because Ifrit's age is purposely vague, there is no specific voice range that I am looking for. I would like her to have a loud and tomboyish voice, but she also needs to be capable of speaking more softly in important moments. You also need to be comfortable with screaming.

Silence is a stern but very kind young woman who is Ifrit’s primary caretaker/mother figure. In the past, Silence was a part of the research team that implanted Ifrit with flame demon shards but was initially unaware of the experiment’s true purpose. An intelligent scientist and doctor, Silence is exposed to the darkness of Rhine Lab over the course of the manhua and becomes disgusted at the callous disregard for ethics that her own mentor and colleagues engage in. At the conclusion of the Crisis, Silence rescues Ifrit by taking her away to Rhodes Island. She sees Saria as being partially responsible for authorizing the experimentation on Ifrit and forbids Saria from seeing Ifrit at Rhodes Island in the present day.

For this role, I am looking for a feminine voice in the medium-medium high range. Speak with an air of quiet confidence normally, but when talking to Ifrit, become more scolding or gentle depending on the situation.

(Lead character)

Saria is the ex-Director of Rhine Lab’s Defense Department (essentially the organization’s cleanup crew) as well as one of the co-founders of Rhine Lab. During her tenure as the Director of Defense, Saria was one of the most powerful people in the company, physically and metaphorically. Saria has a stony cold exterior–to many she seems distant and aloof but in reality she is gentle, fiercely loyal, and has strong morals. Saria originally rescued an orphaned Ifrit and brought her back to Rhine Lab. She sees Ifrit as somewhat of a daughter and dotes on the young woman by visiting her and giving her candy. After witnessing the horrific experimentation on Ifrit, Saria attempted to redirect the experiment to be safer for Ifrit but was denied by Control. After the Diɑbolic Crisis, Saria puts her foot down and confronts Control directly, leaving Rhine Lab for Rhodes Island.

For this role, I am looking for a deep, serious feminine voice. Those with more androgynous voices are also welcome to audition.

The current Director of Rhine Lab’s Structural Department (investigates atoms to cells, aka. Anything that makes up the “structure” of living organisms), Parvis is Silence’s former research mentor. Parvis appears to be a kind old man with a passion for research who encourages his students to pursue great things. He never loses his cool throughout the manga, often seen with a smile on his face even in the gravest of moments. However, Parvis is not above conducting inhumane experiments for the sake of scientific progress, and was in fact the researcher directing the flame demon shard experiments. His goal is to create a series of living fire-wielding weapons of mass destruction.

For this role, I am looking for a gentle, grandfatherly voice. Do not even hint that Parvis may have a dark side unless he is talking about the project with Ifrit/making sacrifices for the advancement of knowledge.

Control is the co-founder and current head of Rhine Lab. A highly intelligent woman with lofty goals, Control seeks to eliminate earthly suffering such as hunger and Oripathy and dreams of one day reaching the stars. Her obsession with the future of humanity has led her to forget about the present and those who are suffering right under her nose. In flashbacks, Control is more emotive and a dreamer, but In the present day she is cold and apathetic. Every document that reaches her desk is signed without even being read, all for the sake of scientific progress. Additionally, she turns a blind eye when it comes to Rhine’s projects regardless of how ethically questionable they are, as long as the experiments produce results for the greater good of mankind. Control is Saria’s old friend and she only opens up in Saria’s presence.

For this role, I am looking for a smooth, medium-low (and possibly throaty) feminine voice with more than a bit of apathy. There are moments in the story where Control talks of doing anything to achieve scientific progress with a smile on her face, to be read with an air of quiet triumph and superiority.

A very young Infected girl who came to Rhodes Island as a stowaway on a cargo ship. She possesses powerful and dangerous water Arts. Darya was born with severe Oripathy as a direct result of her mother having the disease, and her father was an extremely abusive alcoholic who regularly beat his wife for giving birth to an Infected. Darya lost control of her powers one day while watching the abuse and accidentally killed both her parents via desiccation. Despite the hardships of her life, Darya is a sweet and curious child who befriends Ifrit upon coming to Rhodes Island and is given treatment onboard the Rhodes Island landship.

For this role, I am looking for the voice of a very young, bubbly girl. In the manhua, Darya is so young that she can’t even speak in proper sentences yet. While Darya doesn’t have many speaking lines, she is very important to the story. And be prepared to scream in flashbacks and the like.

Muelsyse is the Director of the Ecological Department of Rhine Lab. She is affable and has a playful, mischievous attitude towards everyone. Due to her appearance and ability to use water Arts, she is referred to as a “magical water sprite” by Ifrit. However, Muelsyse hides a more cunning streak and has a history of using backhanded tactics to get what she wants. She has a rather pessimistic view of the world. Muelsyse doesn’t get serious often, but when she does it’s a bad sign.

I am looking for a higher-pitched adult voice with a lot of mischief! Muelsyse is extremely secretive about a lot of things including her past, so you can try to bring out that quality as well.

Ptilopsis is an ex-data maintenance personnel of Rhine Lab, and currently works in the medical department of Rhodes Island. She has a very calm personality and vows to stay neutral at all times in any situation. In the past, she willingly agreed to an experiment that involved planting an Originium-based chip directly into her brain. Due to the neural damage from that incident, Ptilopsis chooses to speak in a highly robotic and computational manner to reduce the strain on her mind and often suffers from narcolepsy.

Ptilopsis’ voice must have a robotic tone without making the delivery flat. I am not looking for a particular voice range for her–any voice with a feminine feel will be considered.

The Tin Man should have a deep, masculine voice but it will be edited to be given a metallic feel. I am mostly looking for good delivery here.

Kal’tsit is a diplomatic and well-traveled doctor who always seems to know just a little more than she lets on. Despite having a fairly aloof attitude, she cares deeply for her patients and the members of Rhodes Island.

(Minor characters)

This is an overall role for the Operators that appear in the manhua for only one panel. All of these Operators are playable in Arknights but do not have major roles in the manhua. There are 5 open spots for this role.

Despite her young appearance, Warfarin is an experienced member of the Rhodes Island medical department. She is a vampire who doesn’t drink others’ blood without their consent and cares deeply for the well-being of her patients. Though her sense of ethics is still a little skewed compared to most people.

Yato is another senior member of Rhodes Island who is known for being diligent and dependable. She has a quiet personality and most people can’t even tell when she’s there.

Blaze is a flighty and rowdy Elite Operator of Rhodes Island with heating Arts. She and her chainsaw work together as one of Rhodes Island’s most dependable Operators.

Kroos is a mischievous Operator-in-training with a bit of a lazy streak. She likes to shirk training in favor of finding hiding places to take naps instead.

Lancet-2 is a medical robot programmed with a female personality. She gets flustered easily and is prone to being teased by other members of Rhodes Island.
