Project Overview

Hi everyone!


My name is Lily, and this my first official project on Casting Call Club. I'm planning to work on my directing and editing skills with this project. I've auditioned for many casting calls on this site, and I've become very interested in starting my own and seeing how everybody portrays the characters. As the title states, I'm putting together an English Fandub of the Anime series Angel Beats!. This show is one of my favorites, such that the plot, characters, and ending are all developed so well. In all honesty it made me cry so much...

What is it?


Angel Beats! is an anime series originally created by Jun Maeda, who also wrote the screenplay, with original character design by Na-Ga. It takes place primarily at a high school in the Afterlife, a place students return to after they die. Here, they must learn to give up any attachments or regrets that still linger from their past life in order to move on. In the Afterlife, there is no death. You may "die," but the wounds will always heal and you will be brought back to life without a scratch. The students still feel pain and other things as they did when they were alive.

The story follows Yuzuru Otonashi, a high school boy who lost his memories of his life after dying. When he wakes up in the Afterlife, he meets a girl by the name of Yuri, who invites him to join the Shinda Sekai Sensen (or SSS, for short). The SSS is an organization Yuri started and currently leads in order to fight against God and Angel, the main antagonist of the show. Angel is their only enemy, a being with supernatural powers who is the Student Council President and appears to be in charge of the status quo. As the story progresses, Yuzuru begins to get along with her, despite their relations. The series has 13 episodes.

As for this project, I intend to dub the first episode. I will be adding more characters and more opportunities once I have more episodes ready. Keep in mind these WILL be posted to YouTube. I will be creating the channel once everyone is cast.

Requirements

1. Please please please have a decent mic. I'm not talking about top-of-the-line, super expensive mics, just one that doesn't have a lot of background noise and/or echo. If you are in a place that produces a lot of echo, I suggest moving if you can or try to soundproof it as best as you can. This is simply to ensure that the audio is not all over the place when mixing, and for the audience to have a tolerable experience.

2. Be appropriate and kind to others. Don't discourage others from auditioning or hate on their work. This applies just as well if you are cast, I just don't want anything to happen that we all could have avoided.

3. I'll be contacting you all via discord. It's easy and efficient, so you must have that. I will be contacting you with the server information once you are cast.

4. You are welcome to audition for as many roles as you like! Keep in mind, though, I will not be double casting.

Deadline

I know the deadline says July 23, but I will most likely extend it depending on the number and quality of auditions.

  • Casting has finished!

    Hello everyone! Many people auditioned, and few were cast. Nonetheless, I thank everyone for helping me out with this project! It was so much fun putting everything together, meeting the cast, and listening to the auditions. Even if you were not cast, if you are experienced with editing or mixing, I would love for you to help us out!   • A Few Updates

    Hi everyone! I decided to push back the deadline a little further. If you haven't already, I suggest auditioning for as many roles as you can. Along with that, nobody has auditioned for Matsushita yet! He has a distinct voice, so I need someone for that role. In addition, I added a role for Yui. Although I already have my eye set on one person for the role, I wanted to give everyone a chance. It's very close to the deadline so I know a lot of people won't audition.   • Update: Halfway Through!

    Hello everyone! I can't believe the turnout we got on this casting call. Over 50 people! I didn't expect so many talented people to audition. It's going to be extremely difficult to choose each part! Although I have much thinking to do, there are still a few roles that no one has auditioned for. Even if you have already auditioned for the leads or other supporting roles, I advise you to send in an audition for the others, so you will have a greater chance of being cast. As of right now, I only have episode one written, edited, and ready to go. Even though we're halfway through and I should've had time to at least get started on the others, I have been very busy. Once I finish up the rest of the series there will be more characters and more opportunities to be a part of this project. Yui is a big fan of Girls Dead Monster, also acting as an assistant for publicity and other matters. She became the lead vocalist after Iwasawa disappeared. She is extremely bright, crazy, and a bit wild. Her upbeat personality is most likely inspired by her past life in the living world where she was paralyzed since she was four years old from head to toe. 


She is very loud, cheerful, and has a high, childish voice.

Girls Dead Monster SINGERS

Girls Dead Monster is an all-girls band made up of students from the Afterlife School (also known as GirlDeMo). It is part of the SSS and usually serves as a distraction in certain operations. It was founded by Iwasawa Masami and Hisako. Iwasawa is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, and Hisako is the lead guitarist. Miyuki Irie is the drummer and Shiori Sekine is the bassist. After Iwasawa passes, Yui takes her place. There are harmonies however so I will need more than one singer.


As I only have the first episode ready, I only need 2 singers for Iwasawa and harmonies. If i see you are fit for the part I won't officially cast you here, I will be sending you a direct message and ask you to join a discord server. Most songs are rock so please keep that in mind. If you auditioned for Iwasawa as well you might have a better chance at getting the part.

Otonoashi is the protagonist in Angel Beats!. He has a sad past and doesn't want anyone to experience the pain or sadness that he did. He is very caring towards others. After he died, he lost all memory of his past life, but slowly regains them later in the story. He had a younger sister who died of cancer. After she died he decided to become a doctor, but died in a train accident before he could take the entrance exam. He has no skills or qualities necessary for the Afterlife, so he decides to practice with the team and pulls through during important battles. His weapon of choice is a Glock Pistol.


His voice is an average male high school voice, sort of medium/medium-high.

  • [Matter-of-Factly] It couldn't be helped. Those were anti-Angel traps, they're useless if not effective. [...] Oh, um... Care to take a breather...?

  • I... I don't know why I'm alive... I have no reason to live. I have no interest in others. Living without concern for others... That's the way to live. Working a job that earns just enough to eat... A life like that was enough...

  • Our lives were real! Not a single moment of them were fake! Everyone lived the best they could! We carved those memories into ourselves! Memories of living as hard as we could! No matter what kind they were, they're the life we led! Erasing them in the blink of an eye like that... Wasn't your life also real to you?!

Yuri (also Yurippe) is extremely determined but has a sensitive and protective personality on the inside. She is the first person Yuzuru meets when he wakes up in the Afterlife. She invites him to join the SSS in the fight against God. We learn that she is fit to be a leader, as she is smart and decisive and quick to make the best decisions for the group. Her weapon of choice is a Beretta 92. She is skilled with a gun but also excels in hand-to-hand combat. Her backstory begins with her and her three younger siblings getting robbed. She is forced to find valuables for the robbers, but comes back to see her siblings dead. She never forgives herself for not preventing their deaths. Later in the story she regrets fighting with Kanade, revealing her sensitive side. She disappears after the ceremony.


As far as her voice goes, I'm looking for around medium.

  • We have no choice but to accept the one and only life we're given, no matter how cruel and heartless it might be.

  • I only have one chance to have my life, and it's right here. It's the only life I have. This is my life. I can't give it to anyone else, It can't be stolen, I can't force it on anyone, or forget it, or make it disappear, or trample on it, or laugh it away, or beautify it... I have no choice but to accept this one cruel, meaningless life! That's why I fight, and why I continue fighting!

Angel is the student council president. Her responsibilities make her subjective to being a criminal and other disruptive attributes. The team refers to her as "Angel" because they do not know her real name, but even though they find out at the end of the series they still use this term. She rarely shows emotion, so it is hard to tell what she is thinking or what she will do. She helps others overcome their regrets so that they can move on from the Afterlife. However, she does not properly understand others, and does not think to explain her actions. Although she appears delicate on the outside, she is powerful and virtually indestructible. She does not speak much, mainly to activate her Guard Skills.


I'm looking for a voice that is near emotionless, but not too bland that it sounds like you are just reading the lines. Preferably a voice that is medium-high/high.

Iwasawa is the original leader of Girls Dead Monster, a band that plays at the school and serves as a distraction. She is in charge of the vocals and is the rhythm guitarist. She also writes the music and lyrics for the songs. She is usually quiet, but is able to captivate her audience by creating music that speaks her thoughts. She used music as an escape from her parents who were constantly fighting, and ended up dying from a brain injury she received from them.


I'm not sure what I would like her voice to be, so I'm interested in seeing what you all come up with! You can reference her official voice actress if you want, but it probably won't affect your chances of getting the part. I need a singer for her too; please audition for the "Girls Dead Monster" position above. If you cannot sing, or are uncomfortable with it, that's okay too. I am always open to finding two different people to sing and voice act if I really like your audition.

  • Yuri's huh? Hers are the worst. Mine aren't as bad as hers. [...] It's nothing impressive. I couldn't sing my beloved songs. That's all...

  • I heard that when things were painful for him, he'd cover his ears with headphones and escape to the world of music. I tried it too. It was like everything was blown away. The vocals screamed for me! They grieved for me!  The kids acting like everything is normal are wrong. Those who cry are right. We, the lonely were more human. He screamed at the absurd, beat it down, and destroyed it. He saved me.

Noda executes the strategies formed by SSS and relies only on himself. He fights with a Halberd. He doesn't listen to anyone besides Yuri, who he completely adores. He is opposed to everyone else, especially Yuzuru. He is completely stupid, and at one point is knocked out by Takeyama from reciting pi. He will not hesitate to kill anyone who gets in Yuri's way. 


His voice should be rich and deep. Here's a reference. Starts around 0:12.

  • [Angry] What was that?! [Noda attempts to kill Naoi but is held back] What are you doing?! Let go of me!

  • You bastard. You're the jerk that insulted Yurippe and refused to enlist in the Battlefront! Wanna die? [...] Die a hundred times! Die! Die! Die! Die! Die! Die! Die! Die! Die!!!!

Hinata is bright and a very dependable character. He and Yuzuru are very close. He is a reliable member of the team, and tries to help his friends whenever he can. He and Yui constantly annoy each other, but really he cares for her. He eventually helps her leave the Afterlife by telling her he would marry her. His regret that keeps him from leaving this world is his failure to successfully catch a baseball which cost his team an important win. When they co-founded the SSS, he nicknamed Yuri "Yurippe" because his mother was named Yuri. His weapon of choice is an RPK-74 and an S&W 645.

Takamatsu is an honor student who is very polite. He wears glasses and contributes to the SSS mainly through gathering information, but does not fight. Yuri says not to be fooled by his glasses, he is really an idiot. Later, he is absorbed by a shadow and is turned into an NPC. However he is able to regain his senses and disappears like the others. He carries a Desert Eagle, but is also seen with a Sig 552.

Shiina is a ninja and is able to sense when danger is coming. Despite her dark and mysterious demeanor,  she has a weakness for cute stuff such as animals. She is strict and serious and is very self-critical when she fails. She decides that her weakness is poor concentration. She doesn't speak often but when she does it's usually remarks such as "how shallow-minded" or "how foolish" (this is so stupid, things like that). She fights with dual Koadachi & Shuriken. 


I would like her voice to be medium-low. Here's a reference.

Fujimaki is a delinquent. He is similar to Noda, as he picks on Yuzuru when he first joins the SSS. He can't swim. He fights with a Shirasaya, but also uses a submachine gun.

TK is very mysterious. He always wears a large bandanna around his forehead and eyes. He tends to break out in dance & song often. He only speaks in short phrases that usually make no sense. These phrases depend on the situation and are mainly quoted from pop culture, but it seems like he does not know English very fluently. He carries handguns and a submachine gun during missions.


His voice should be mid-range. Here's a reference. He tends to say Kiss You a lot.

Matsushita has a large build and is a master at Judo. He always repays debts, especially when it involves food. He carries heavy weapons such as rockets or machine guns in battle. (Pretty much a mix between Brock from Pokemon and Hunk from Voltron) Fun fact, he is able to play Baseball and eat noodles at the same time.


His voice should be mid/low. I couldn't find a good reference, so I just want to see what you guys come up with.

Oyama is an ordinary boy with no special qualities, but Yuri claims that's what makes him different. He does not excel at anything but is as capable as any normal person. His feelings are hurt easily. His weapon is a sniper rifle.


His voice is high, but not super high or squeaky. Once again I couldn't find a reliable reference.
