Ascelin navigates his rocky, shallow relationships with the rest of the nobles, his deep-rooted past, and attempts to douse the question that festers into a haunting doubt throughout the Kingdom: as Ascelin chases Cass around the world, only to spare her, at what point has he given up the Kingdom he claims to fight for?

“Finally. A real fight!”
“I look for answers in the bottom of a bottle, because hell if I know where else to turn. In the shards of the broken glass, I see it. I’m there, alone, without someone to love.”
“We fought like gods, my Valkyrie. It’s time we remember we’re mortals too. I’ll miss what we had.”
