Xenogears: Visually Impaired Let's Play

Project Overview


  • What is this?

    Basically we want to create a "Let's Play" of the 1998 JRPG Classic Xenogears that is designed for a visually impaired audience.  The characters dialogue would be dubbed and a narrator introduced to describe scenes, characters and JRPG information.  We are going to need both voice actors and writers to make this project happen!

    THIS IS A NON PAYING GIG.  This is a passion project which I've always wanted to do.  While there are a lot of videos breaking down Xenogears and explaining the story, every one of those videos inserts opinions into the story...good or bad.  People with visual impairments deserve to listen to the game in its entirety and form their own opinion.  That being said, I don't have a lot of money to contribute, but will of course credit each person contributing.

    Requirements:

    Since the idea of this project is to give each main character a distinct voice, it is imperative that whoever volunteers for this project, completes their lines.  Otherwise it could create confusion later on for the listener if we need to change up a voice actor in the middle of the playthrough. 

    A decently clear mic would be helpful.  Experience is not necessary.  An understanding of JRPG and Xenogears is helpful but not required.  

    Time Required:

    I cannot stress this enough.  Xenogears is a long, wordy game.  Play time through the main storyline is roughly 65 hours.  To provide context, Final Fantasy 7 playtime was 37 hours. Main roles like Fei, Citan, Elly, Bart, Grahf, Ramus and Miang contain a lot of dialogue.  Keep that in mind when inquiring about a role.  

    A few final notes:

    1.) This funny cult classic means a lot to me.  A project of this magnitude is going to be a giant undertaking; if you are interested in helping to organize this project and be part of decision making, feel free to contact me.

    2.) If you are interested in writing: keep in mind that some of our listeners have never experienced sight before.  Because of this, it's important to think outside the box and sometimes describe things in an abstract way.

    3.) Discord is not required, but it is recommended as we utilize it to organize group rehearsals, deliver announcements, and distribute scripts (it's also been an incredibly useful tool for getting to know the people affiliated with the project and we've had a fair bit of fun with it).

Fei is the main character and has the most screen time in the game.  His personality is complex, being divided by "The Coward" and "ID" that emerge throughout the game.  The character has been reincarnated multiple times and you see them throughout the game.  These characters will also be voiced by the same person.  

Fei is 18, with no memory of his past and a brilliant fighter.  Caring, understanding and VERY naive.  

  • I thought I didn't have a path that I could take laid out before me.  But like he said, that's just running away.  I must find my own path.

  • Dreaming... I was dreaming... Perhaps it may have been but a long forgotten memory... A dream... A memory... Things remembered when one is asleep... Things forgotten when one is awake... Where the deepest layers of memories become the outmost layers of one's dreams... Which are reality? Which are illusions? One cannot tell until one awakes... Or perhaps they are, at the same time, both truth and fiction... A vast nebulous... With no boundaries... An emptiness equivalent to my own existence... I dreamt such a dream... A long... Never-ending, dream.

Of not being able to do anything for the children left behind...? Now they have nothing... I have nothing... I have nowhere... no one... I didn't want to get in it... I had no choice... Bartholomew Fatima

Bartholomew "Bart" Fatima is leader of a group of sand pirates who ravage the Ignas desert in their sand cruiser, the Yggdrasil. He is a rambunctious, hot headed, ill-tempered youth, and no one can really control him. He is a playable character in Xenogears. 

During the game, Bart crosses paths with Fei Fong Wong, and the two ally together. Bart shows Fei his lair.

Despite his brash attitude, Bart is a kind-hearted and honest guy who has deep leadership talents, and has an eye for survival with honor and dignity. He receives much support from his men, but he tends to shoot anything that moves, and can cause grief for his comrades.

He is considered a main character and has a lot of dialogue.

Dr. Citan Uzuki (Shi Tan Uzuki in the Japanese version) is a doctor who lives up the mountain path from Lahan with his wife, Yui, and his daughter, Midori. He is a playable character in Xenogears.

Citan harbors a great enthusiasm for technology and possesses an acute intellect when thinking through complex problems, such as the invasion of Merkava, the physical structure of Deus.

He has a strong sense of morality, and would never break a promise under nearly any circumstances. One example of this is the promise he made to Yui's grandfather, Wiseman Gaspar Uzuki, that he would never use a sword to kill again. However, when the situation deteriorated for the worse, he takes up the sword again with the approval of Yui, arguing that 'this is no time for moralities'.


Yui believes Citan is too persistent and he talks too much, but he believes he doesn't talk too much.

Rico has shown to have a rather fickle nature. At first he shows little interest in joining Fei's party. Upon losing the title of battling champ, he resumes his assassination attempts on the Kaiser, until his subsequent recapture. After this, he is dealt with harshly, in the form of being pitted against a Rankar without his Gear. Fei comes to his rescue and attempts to convince him that there must be things for him to live for. Rico gives no reception for Fei's compassion for a second time (the first time being when he got injured fighting a monster in the Kislev sewers to help clear his name).

  • "I don't need a reason to beat the crap out of anyone who pisses me off. And of course that means you too."

  • My... town? Hmph, don't make me laugh. Who gives a damn about this crap town... I'm crap too.

Billy Lee Black, originally known as Billy Lee Blanche, is a playable character in Xenogears. He is introduced as a young, pacifistic priest of the Ethos, who runs his own unaffiliated orphanage in the Aquvy region. As an Etone, Billy is charged to protect the world from the Wels.

Billy has a strained relationship with his father Jesiah, but puts up with him for the sake of his little sister, Primera.

Becoming an official Etone (think preacher), Billy opened an orphanage at his childhood home, welcoming in orphans from all over the world. As it was unaffiliated with the Ethos Church, the orphanage was funded by Billy's own meager wages. The orphans in his care liked to play hide-and-seek with Billy, and were a great support for his missions, as they could send the Renmazuo Gear immediately at Billy's signal.


  • "Surprised there are only children? My sister and I haven't had parents since we were infants... So, I opened an orphanage. So kids without anyone wouldn't have to go through what we did. They're all healthy and obedient to the teachings of the 'Ethos'. They're all good kids who even help me with work."

  • "People are people. Nothing more or less. I admit that there are the weak and the powerless. But that's no reason for us to forsake them. We are all the same human beings."

Maria is first encountered on the top of Babel Tower in Seibzehn, fighting Fei Fong Wong and his allies for infiltrating "Shevat's territory" (ironically, Fei himself was born in Shevat.) After being defeated, under the commands of Queen Zephyr, Maria brings Fei's group to Shevat, where she shows them around.

Later, Maria's father Nikolai returns to Shevat in Achtzehn. Maria defeats him and makes peace with his death.

After this, Maria tags along with Fei's group, wanting to get revenge on Solaris for killing her parents, which she succeeds in when it crashes and sinks into the ocean.

Her role after this is extremely minimal, however. In Disc 2, she only has a mere 8 lines of mandatory dialog, showing her irrelevance to the main plot. However, she still joins in the mission to defeat Deus.

  • Calamity!? That's the prototype Gear my grandfather made. Do you know my Grandpa? Where is he now? 

  • There are a lot of people who don't care if they hurt others... So, this is where you all were. The Queen said this house was destroyed in the great war 500 years ago. This house has been kept like this on purpose as a reminder of the war. Thank you for waiting. Please come to the palace with me. 

  • I'm coming, Solaris! Seibzehn and I shall be the dark wings which carry you all to your deaths!!

Chu Chu

Chu-Chu was part of the Ooki tribe, an aboriginal species of the world. Her race, the Dotesque Chu-Chupolin, once lived in the woods, but due to Solaris's activities, they became almost extinct. It is implied Solaris did cruel experiments on the Chu-Chus. The Chu-Chus once had gigantic bodies, but Solaris put genetic Limiters in them to keep them at a small size.

Some managed to escape to Shevat and live with Wiseman, but she was taken to the surface by him years before the game starts. Chu-Chu disguised herself as a stuffed animal.

Chu-Chu snuck into Bledavik, Aveh, disguised as a stuffed animal. In the shopping center of the town, Margie saw Chu-Chu disguised as a stuffed animal. Margie wanted Chu-Chu so much that she took Chu-Chu with her, but unfortunately, along the way, Margie was slowed down by Chu-Chu's weight and caught by a subordinate of Shakhan. Shakhan recaptured her.

**From the project creator** Chu chu is a cute little stuffed animal like character.  Honestly, looking at her picture will give you an exact idea on how you think she should sound.  

  • I'm not a low level life-form. I'm Chu-Chu. Don't be a bad loser! If you wanchu apologize, you had better do it while you still can.

  • Nice chu meet chu! I'm Chu-Chu! I fell in love with you when I first saw you in Bledavik!! Wherever you go, I shall go chu! Oh my... I just declared my love..."


  • You humans are truly unusual living beings, aren't chu? You're all like shattered fragments of a mirror.
