Violets for Viola (Play Read-Through)

Project Overview

This will be a full length play set in America from 1919 to 1922. It will have themes revolving around cabaret, prohibition, lesbianism, and liquor.

Brief Introduction: After physical abuse from her spouse, Geraldine Davis finds refuse in a hotel owned by a German woman called Magdalene Erhardt. Geraldine's now former spouse, Richard, discovers her new whereabouts within minutes and barges into the hotel. When Geraldine expresses that she is through with the unhealthy lifestyle that he has forced onto her, Richard attacks her. After witnessing such physical and verbal abuse, Magdalene offers Geraldine a room in her hotel. The hotel maid, Helen Kay, reminds Magdalene of her at risk financial state and insists that she kick out Geraldine. When Magdalene tells Geraldine that she can no longer stay for free, Geraldine begs for a job at the hotel. To Magdalene's displeasure, Geraldine does not qualify. After learning that Geraldine only previous jobs have been at night clubs, Magdalene reveals that she owns a nearby cabaret. Geraldine auditions and lands a position as a show girl.

When it gets her into trouble, he tries his hardest to steal her from that lifestyle and the people who introduced her to it.

  • Geraldine, why do you keep avoiding this topic every time is comes up? Is marriage such a scary thing?

  • This is your fault! You offered her the job. You are the one encouraging this dangerous and sick lifestyle!

20s-30s, former "lady of the night", cabaret performer, somewhat classless, energetic, youthful, wild, smoker, drinker, feminine, high or medium voice

Role: Geraldine is the love interest of two people (and the sexual interest of even more). After running out on her abusive spouse, Geraldine seeks refuge in a small hotel. Her spouse, however, follows her to the door. When Geraldine expresses that she is through with living with him and with making him money as a prostitute, he physically attacks her. The owner of the hotel, Magdalene, intervenes and offers her a room. Geraldine takes it, but, realizing that she has to pay, must get a job at Magdalene's night club where she might just get more than she bargained for.

  • Would you butt me, darling?

  • I don't want to work the streets to earn your money and, if that means not living under your roof, so be it!

  • I'm just tired of this. I'm so awfully tired.

50s-60s, snarky, blunt, hotel maid, Cocky accent, Scottish accent, any accent,

Role: Kay is a maid at Magdalene's hotel. Truth be told, she is a perfect tool to reveal Magdalene's emotions to the audience.

  • Sometimes, you have to give in and just do it.

  • You weren't in love with her. You just grabbed the first she who'd let you.

  • I may be a delight, but no one ever accused me of being happy. Happiness is a myth, so don’t go searching for it. It’s much too lonely a journey to receive such a disappointing outcome.

Role assigned to: allure

30s, medium/low raspy voice (think Velma Kelly), cabaret performer, snarky, classless, sarcastic, quick speaker

Role: Rosemary or "Madam Hyde" is a show girl at Magdalene's cabaret. She gets along with Geraldine, but she cannot help her urge to make the new girl feel as uncomfortable as possible. It is all in good fun and not out of seer cruelty. Rosie loves her drama and, according to her, that is the best part of the job. She may be snarky, unladylike, and rude, but she is friendly, loyal, and good-hearted when it all comes down to it.

  • Darling, is that what she told you?

  • Hey, kid. Nothing I do is personal. How can I not ignite some drama in this joint? It's the best part of the job.

  • Hey, looky there! Little Maggies' got a new toy!
