TRIGGER

TRIGGER

Project Overview

Greetings! I'm an animation student at the School of Visual Arts seeking remote voice actors for my sophomore film, TRIGGER.

TRIGGER is a two-minute psychological drama/thriller about two childhood friends whose connection has grown brittle with time and circumstance. When high schooler Mack drags his kind of-maybe-friend Joey back to his place to show off another gun he's somehow convinced someone to sell him, it seems like it'll be the same as always: Joey will stand awkwardly amid the trash and dirty laundry and pretend not to be uncomfortable, and Mack will pretend not to notice. But when Mack points the weapon Joey's way to try to get some kind of reaction out of him, old resentment quickly spirals into violence that can't be undone. (Please note that this project features mature themes and language.)

I'm looking for strong, veristic performances and, if possible, actors with a quick turnaround time-- I'm on a relatively tight deadline and can't begin begin animating any dialogue shots until the final audio is locked. If any applicants have any questions at all about the project in general or any of the characters/roles therein, please ask, and I'll respond as soon as I can! You can reach me here on CCC, or email me at l.aliascyfilms @ gmail.

Thank you for your interest, and I look forward to working with you!

UPDATE 2/9: Thank you so much for all the submissions (and kind words) in such a short period of time! I'm honestly flabbergasted!! I just added a brief vocal description for both leads at the end of their character descriptions-- hopefully these will be of use. I look forward to seeing the auditions the next ten days will bring!

  • CASTING COMPLETE!!

After many, many hours of pouring over submissions, I am ecstatic to announce that all roles for have officially been cast! Thank you so much to everyone who auditioned, on this site and off-- I listened through every single audition I received, and let me tell you, the competition was incredibly close, and frankly, I wish I could work with more of you... and hopefully I will in future endeavors!

For those cast: I will reach out to you shortly to confirm continued availability and other housekeeping matters. Please respond within the next 24 hours, or your role may be ceded to the next pick. (No need to record within that time-- just a simple "I am available to work on this project in the next few days" will do.) If you have been shortlisted for a role, consider keeping an eye out in case something comes up and I need an emergency replacement!

Thank you again, and I wish you all the utmost in whatever you may be pursuing!

  • Casting Deadline Complete!

Hello everyone! As of just recently, auditions for TRIGGER are officially closed! Thank you so much for all your wonderful submissions-- I had no idea that I'd receive so many over such a short span of time. That being said, due to the large number of auditions (as well as general busyness on my end), it will likely take a few days' time to determine my final cast picks. When that decision is made, I'll make a public announcement here as well as reaching out to selected actors individually; more information to come then.

Please note ahead of time that in accordance with my need for a quick turnaround expressed in the original project description, failure of an actor to respond to their casting within 24 hours may result in them forfeiting their role. (More time will be given to record-- I just need to confirm talents' continued responsiveness and arrange details like their preferred means of payment.)

Thank you again, and I wish all applicants the best!

Protagonist. 8 lines + effort sounds.

Joey is the kind of person who has spent most of his life on the path of least resistance. He's driven by fear (of change, rejection, etc.) much more than any weak personal desire that might crop up in his mind, and it's that fear of stepping outside the lines that simultaneously makes him so anxious around Mack in the present day and keeps him from breaking off their relationship for good. He was raised to skirt around his own feelings and wants-- to avoid rudeness and bluntness-- and as such is horrible at holding any sort of personal boundaries. He likely suffers from an anxiety disorder of some sort, but is usually decent at masking it despite the near-constant panic that lurks under the surface-- if nothing else, a desperate fear of standing out is a good motivator.

During the course of the film, he experiences a major panic attack, culminating in him losing an unclear amount of time to dissociation; whether these symptoms stem from a history of trauma will be left ambiguous.

He's painfully middle class, the kind of kid who has never thought of himself as rich but has never had to seriously worry about money and doesn't really realize that the experiences of other kids his age might be different. He has an overbearing family that will not only pay for prep school and tutoring and college, but also expects these things of him as a matter of fact.

A long time ago, Mack's larger-than-life rambunctiousness and confidence were a hugely positive influence on him, encouraging him to do the stupid, silly things he was too uptight to do otherwise. Now, the prospect of trouble that Mack brings is more discomfiting than freeing.

His range is a bit on the higher side, but not nasally. A little soft-spoken-- his words come out quicker than he means, and a bit on the mumble-y side, like he's trying to say as much as possible while taking up as little space in the conversation as he can. In addition to dialogue, this role requires about ten seconds of efforts, from Joey's hyperventilation and fleeing from Mack.

  • (trying to act calm) I just don’t like you pointing that thing at me.

  • (beginning to panic/dissociate) I... I...

Deuteragonist. 17 lines.

Mack copes with his dead-end future by trying to convince himself that he's too cool to give a shit. He's naturally a person with a lot of passion and verve, and maybe they might have done him well if he'd been born to a better household, or at least a less destitute one. As things are, he papers over his poor home life and horrible performance at school with false confidence and pride. He genuinely enjoys movies and comics (despite an inability to distinguish between "needlessly dark" and "deep") and tends to identify with edgy, "alpha"-type characters to a concerning degree to validate his conceptualization of himself as a cool, tortured badass rather than a sad, lonely kid.

He does genuinely care about Joey, though he's far too emotionally constipated to express that in any healthy way. The exaggeratedly confident manner in which he comports himself is mostly to mask his own insecurities, but it's also an attempt to make Joey laugh-- one that used to work. He's not dumb; he's aware of how awkward Joey always seems to look in his presence now, and he hates how shitty it makes him feel. He tries to make things normal between them again by leaning further and further into his overblown bravado, hoping to coax something besides distant discomfort out of Joey without realizing that he's only making Joey even more uncomfortable.

He finds the prospect of scaring Joey attractive and repulsive in equal measures-- on one hand, there's schadenfreude in acting on his deeply-buried, not-quite-conscious resentment towards Joey for having everything he wishes he could have, not to mention the intoxicating feeling of finally being in control; on the other, he finds the prospect that one of his oldest (and perhaps only) friends can't see past his tough-guy front and is actually afraid of him horrifying.

Joey may be the protagonist, but Mack is by far the most demanding role in the film. Besides having the most lines, he requires a huge range of performance, from semi-friendly ribbing with an undertone of bitterness to full-on desperate screaming. His voice is naturally a tad on the higher side for a teenage boy, similar to Joey's, but he speaks in the lower end of his register to try to sound tough (with varying degrees of effectiveness).

  • (desperate) JOEY! I TOLD YOU, IT'S NOT FUCKING LOADED!!

Supporting character. Only 2 lines-- though they're important ones, and the final words in the film.

Just a guy doing his job. A police officer who arrives at the scene after Joey, panicking, calls 911, reporting a man with a gun. The situation seems simple to his eyes: there's a delinquent to apprehend, and a frightened victim to comfort. He takes charge of the latter, unaware that Joey's disquiet is driven as much by guilt as by fear.

Although he intends for his words to be reassuring, they come out more than a bit ominous with the context that Joey has been safe all along-- but now, Mack very well might not be.

  • Don't worry. We'll handle it from here.

  • You're safe now.
