There's a Monster in the House

There's a Monster in the House

Project Overview

After a heated argument with her older sister and mother about their family's toxic relationship, Jenny's Alexa malfunctions, plunging the house into total darkness. As Jenny attempts to turn the lights back on, it refuses to obey and instead delivers unsettling, cryptic warnings. The expected run time for this episode is 20 minutes.

Check out one of our past audiodramas to get a feel on what this one will be like! This episode will be the thirteenth episode in the anthology.

Protagonist, Female, 17

Jenny is a Korean-American high school senior and second daughter in her family. Always considered “second best” or “not good enough” by her mother and constantly being compared to her older sister, Susie.

VA Note: Voice actresses of Korean (or Asian descent) are highly encouraged to audition; character speaks with an American west coast accent.

  • (annoyed) Mom! Why’d you have to interrupt! I was just getting to the best part!

  • (up to interpretation) And for the record: I’m not a loafer, a slacker... or whatever derogative implying lethargy that your protégé wants to throw at me on any given day! I work hard. I study hard. Every single day! But apparently anything and everything I do just isn’t good enough. All thanks to your overly high expectations of me!

  • C’mon. Cut it out, you two! I’m sorry, okay?! Fine. Susie, I’ll go to the Phi Beta whatever ceremony with you. Mom! I’m sorry I called you a tiger mom. I’ll be a better daughter, all right? I’ll go to law school, medical school, wherever! Whatever you want! Just come out now! (pause) Please!

Susie is a Korean-American college junior attending Stanford University and majoring in bioengineering. Has an arrogant, haughty personality due in part to ranking “number one” and being “the best” in everything she does—at home, at school, and at work.

VO note: Voice actresses of Korean (or Asian) descent encouraged to audition; character speaks with an American west coast accent.

  • (up to interpretation) If you were a little more like your big sister, perhaps you would have gotten into Stanford too, instead of having to settle for UC Berkeley. I’d also have a more worthy adversary.

  • (apologetic) I’m sorry for not being a good sister… and it would totally suck if you disappeared. For me… and for Mom. That’s what I came here to say. Eat your dinner before it gets cold, alright? Even tiger moms have a heart… even if they don’t always wear it on the sleeve for all the world to see, including their daughters.

  • (yelling) Hey! Why’d you turn all the lights off?

Jeong-hwa is a Korean-American medical doctor and mother of Jenny and Susie (throughout the story she's referred to as "Mom"). She and her husband immigrated from South Korea to the United States. Her daughters were both born in the U.S. A typical “tiger mom” who has excessively high expectations of her two daughters. Because of this, she constantly compares her two daughters and favors the one that performs better.

VO note: Voice actresses of Korean (or Asian) descent encouraged to audition. Character can either speak with a Korean accent or American west coast accent, depending on chosen VA’s preference and/or ability to perform with a Korean accent. Korean accent reference: Young-mi “Omma” Kim (portrayed by Jean Yoon) from “Kim’s Convenience”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XraaXEoIh0g

  • (serious, fed up) Get ready. I’m not going to ask a third time. Also, stop playing with your phone when someone’s talking to you. It’s not polite. (sighs) Sometimes I don’t know what to do with you.

  • (genuine/condescending) Why can’t you be more like your sister?

  • (yelling) Jenny! Turn the lights back on!

  • Sorry. I don't have an answer for that.

  • From wikihow.com, if you want to quickly and effectively hide, look for places out of your pursuer’s line of sight such as behind furniture, under blankets, or inside closets and cabinets.

  • There's a monster in the house.
