Karo is a high school student who becomes skeptical of the class project on autocracy. While many classmates get caught up in the group's momentum, Karo sees its dangers and speaks out against it. She serves as a voice of reason, highlighting the risks of blind obedience.
And now Maja's taking my role?
I'd like to see how you’d react if I discussed your relationship problems with your boyfriend.
I just wasn't feeling well.
Lisa is Karo's best friend. Initially, both of them are excited about the project. As the story progresses and the class becomes more engrossed in the wave's ideology, Lisa gets more involved and becomes a staunch supporter, creating tension between her and Karo. Lisa's character showcases how easy it is for individuals, even those who are close friends, to be swayed by group dynamics and how it can strain personal relationships.
Dennis said I did quite well!
Why didn’t you show?
But I don't have relationship problems because I don't have a relationship or a boyfriend, in case you didn’t notice.
Ferdi is not one of the main characters. However, his involvement in the story underscores the wider impact of the experiment on the student body and the dynamics that arise within the group setting. Like many others, he becomes immersed in the "Die Welle" movement, illustrating the power of group identity and conformity.

Maja is a central character among the group of students participating in the project. She's a friend of Karo and Lisa and is initially supportive of the class experiment. As the dynamics of "Die Welle" become more intense, Maja finds herself conflicted, torn between the allure of the group and her personal reservations. Her journey portrays the internal conflict one might experience when faced with peer pressure and the allure of belonging, emphasizing the psychological pull and dangers of groupthink.
The dream of life. That once real dream - I haven’t forgotten it.
