Project Overview

The Stagnant Earth: An Audio Drama, Episode 1 (PILOT) - 'The Bed We Made'

'Two hundred years, rotting in the ground, dying, crumbling to dust in coffins we’d already built for ourselves. It was pathetic'

A long time ago, humanity was ravaged by a disease that destroyed the minds of nearly eighty percent of the population. The remaining twenty percent had little option but to flee; either trying to make it in the outside world (and failing), or barrickading themselves in bunkers and well fortified buildings. They had to get creative of course, but they survived. Barely.

But that was nearly two hundred years ago. Since then, the world has moved on. People still live below, too terrified off what they have termed 'The Denizens', wrathful figures that dominated their childhood nightmare, gatekeepers to an edenic paradise, to ever emerge. But all hope is not lost, frail communities have managed to survive; disparate survivors, tied together by the fact that they're in radio range of one another. It's not quite a life, but it's the best they can hope for.

'Two hundred years, and according to them it still wasn’t safe, they still didn’t want me to leave, because of The Denizens… not like I was going to let that stop me... '

'The Stagnant Below' follows one such community, for whom everything is about to change. Marred by the events of their collective, intertwined pasts, and grieving the loss of one of their own, 'The Group' are not ready for change. Unfortunately, change is ready for them, and it's arriving in the shape of a rather sheltered boy named Baker.

The news Baker brings will shock the community to its core, and catalyse changes that its members never thought would be possible.

(The Stagnant Below currently has a first episode in draft form, and a further seven planned. I plan to get the pilot up and running before properly writing the rest. Episodes will be about twenty minutes, and as with any project on here, I expect a decent level of commitment from all actors participating, and at least enough knowledge of Audacity and a decent enough mic for there not to be too much background noise. Obviously that doesn't mean that you can't audition if you don't have a proffessional quality mic, just no phone/headphone mics please! )

(Also, If you're not sure how to basic edit-y stuff with Audacity, here's a quick youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwJP_S13K1o)

(Thanks for taking the time to read this! I know it's long, but it's kind of important =P I hope you have fun auditioning, and if you have any questions please ask! =) )

(Also, this project will get pretty dark, please don't sign up if you're not comfortable with the following; discussions of death, swearing, violence, discussions of sexual assault (Nothing graphic/explicit, it's just a part of some characters backstories, and will be handled as sensitively and maturely as possible), mental health issues, and lgbt+ characters (this is less a 'are you comfortable' thing, more a 'can you be mature portraying' thing') )

'Two hundred years… Just how long are they planning to wait for anyway?'

Latest Updates

  • Thanks For Auditioning!

Thanks so much for auditioning everyone! They were all really great =D Casting will be anounced 20th February

  • Name Changed to 'The Stagnant Earth'

I changed the name to 'The Stagnant Earth' as I didn't really like the other one =P

  • New character added- Kris.

I added Kris, Alec and Charlotte's older brother, to the characters available for audition if anyone's interestsed =) The only reason  didn't add him before was because I wasn't too sure about where I was going with him, or what I'd be looking for in an actor playing him, but I think I've got it pretty much down now =) Also! Thank you to everyone who's auditioned so far; all of your auditions are so great =D It's really strange hearing people say words that I wrote, and play characters who've been living in the annals of my mind for so long, but obviously it's ridiculously exciting! =D =D =D Thanks for taking the time to read this, and good luck!

Sylvie is... troubled. Having lost her mother to suicide at a very young age, and living in complete isolation from that point onward, she has difficulty interacting with other people. She is like a daughter to a lot of the other bunker-people, a position that often left her feeling starved for genuine companionship growing up. The only person who didn't see her that way was Charlotte, which meant that when Charlotte left, Sylvie struggled to deal with the likelihood of her death.

  • Of course I have! Just like I have since I was literally five years old. Come on Rani, you don’t need to worry about me, I’m old enough to take care of myself.

     (BEAT)

And... I’m not talking at thin air; just because she hasn’t replied doesn’t mean she’s not out there.

  •  My mother always said that babies cry because of the things they’ll never have.

  • Did you hear me, Charlotte, you’re making Little Eesha sad! She’s crying because of you! You need to come back! She’s going to to grow up and not know you, she's going to die-

Rani is 'The Mother' of the group. Having grown up in a bunker that was once home to over fifty families, and whilst this number had somewhat dwindled by the time she was born, Rani was lucky enough to spend her childhood with other children, namely her best friends Benita and Zach. However, when a series of tragedies left Rani alone with a baby and a hefty dose of added cynisism, she found that she had to grow up very quickly, and  she soon became something of a leader in the community.

  •  (Telling a story to a child) Once upon a time, before we started to live below the soil, and before the ground shifted to swallow us up, people lived in the land of The Denizens. But there were no Denizens back then, there was just us and the paw walkers, living together beneath a glowing orb that filled the world with a light that never went out. The First People were happy, living in a utopic world that was fresh and filled with an abundance of anything they ever needed; light, food, water, companionship; you name it, they took it for granted.

  •  Benita’s gone. Which goes to show exactly how much she knew about anything.

  • Sylvie?!? Sylvie, are you alright?!? Please don’t tell me you’re talking at thin air at a time like this?!?!Have you-

Charlotte has always been something of a loose cannon. A combination of traumatic childhood experiences and growing up  with two brothers (Alec and Kris) made her equal parts tough and broken.  She isn't all jagged glass though; what initially started out as a childish fascination with the painfully lonely Sylvie quickly grew into a tender friendship, and as she got older, a fragile hope for something more. In spite of this, her mounting frustrations at living in a cramped radio broadcast tower with two boys and a dwindling food supply got the best of her, and she journeyed to the outside world, never to be heard from again.

Baker grew up in a military base, out of radio range of the rest of the group. Upon the 'mysterious' death of the base's occupants, he found documents hinting at research that suggested the outside world was safe once more. Grief stricken and at a loss for a purpose, he set out in search of other members of the human race to try and deliver the good news. Unbeknownst to him, the Denizens weren't the only threat held by the surface....

  • Wait! Stop! I'm not here to hurt you!

  • For a long a time, it was me my mum, and my dad. And then suddenly, it was just me. The point is, life's not just plain sailing for anyone. Shit happens, people get murdered before our very eyes, that's just the way it is now. I hate it as much as you do.

  •  Hey, err... Lady? Could you please remove that knife from my throat? Please?

Geraldine is the oldest member of the group, but that doesn't stop her from having a good time. She's had her fair share of hardships in the past, and gets pretty lonely sometimes as she doesn't have any bunker-mates, but her comparitavely vast knowledge and easy going nature make her the group's favourite confidante, mentor, and friend. She's very close to Alec as she was the only one he felt he could trust after something terrible happened, and she's recently become very close to Rani as the younger woman finds her to be a good repository of childcare knowledge as she was there for most of the group's infancy.

  • You know very well what. It’s not a joke; she’s not a joke, she’s a person that we lost and that we miss, not a joke. Never a joke.

  • I’ve never heard of a paw walker big enough to make a noise like that. It was loud, fast. Denizens are the only ones that sound like what this sounded like.

  • But you were just so unaware! It was at least slightly adorable!(She puts on a deep, ‘manly’ voice)’Good morning folks, I’m Alec Broadband, here to bring you the most depressing news of the apocolypse’

Alec is the middle child out of him, Charlotte, and Kris. Despite the trauma faced by all three siblings as children, Alec probably bounced back the quickest, partially due to the help of Geraldine, and partially due to his natural disposition. He is cheerful and geeky, obsessing over the relatively high tech equipment in his radio-tower home until he became an expert. He sometimes has difficulties expressing how he is feeling, and is good at covering things up when he doesn't want to worry people, which can sometimes be troubling during his darker moments when he veers dangerously close to the edge of a place he can never come back from.

  •  I am being serious. I know that the thought of her being alive seems like too much to hope for, too good a thing to be a thing that could happen to us, but she was my sister, I can’t just let her be… y’know, and honestly? I’m just so tired. Aren’t you?

  •  Good morning folks, This is Alec Broadband, coming to you from the something-or-other broadcast station in...well, if I knew, I’d tell you…Today’s top stories include the world still spinning, confirmation that we’re all still losing it, oh, and no denizen sightings in over a month, so… that’s good, I guess?

    Aaand now for the weather,

Still complete shit. And probably going to kill us all… fuck, I’m too pretty to get killed by rain, or maybe I’m the exact right amount of pretty… who knows. I guess it could be worse… I could be out there with it. I bet Charlotte’s freezing her ass off right now if she’s still... Well. Hey, Charlie, if you’re out there, do us all a favour and survive, please?

  • (Afraid) That was a long time ago. A long, long time ago. Me, Chris, and Charlotte were still kids then.

Kris

A man of few words, Kris is the oldest of the three radio-tower siblings. His protective instincts have always been strong, and extend to other members of the group such as Eesha and Sylvie, whom he regards as his own. Having lost a lot of role-models/parental figures through circumstances both savoury and less so, Kris treats people who are new or older than him with a great deal of suspicion. This means he can sometimes treat Rani and Geraldine somewhat coldly, especially if they are acting in a way that he percieves to be a threat to one of the younger members of the group. Because of this, he has gotten into numerous arguments with Rani over Eesha, from which Alec has had to talk him down. When Charlotte left, he accepted it pretty quickly, as whilst he was grieving the loss of his sister, he was more concerned by the impact it would have on Alec and Sylvie. He hates feeling powerless in situations, and will always opt to deal with the thing he can fix as opposed to the one he can't.

  •  Not my point. After the thing with our mum, Charlie wouldn’t leave her side for a week, she nearly died of dehydration. She kept thinking she was gonna wake up, and that situation wasn’t ambiguous.

  •  Your mum was still around, she read to her every day over the radio.

  •  You’re changing the subject.
