The Otherlands [CASTING WAVE TWO]

The Otherlands [CASTING WAVE TWO]

Project Overview

Hello, and thank you for checking out this project page! The Otherlands is a passion project of mine that I've been working on for the past three years, and I would absolutely love for you to be a part of it.

This is for the second of four waves of casting! There will possibly be a fifth, but four are guaranteed. As of August 16th, about half of the roles are available to be auditioned for. One-off characters and extras will be added in exactly one month.

⁣PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A LONG-TERM PROJECT!! It is also unpaid, as I do not have the resources for that at the moment. Please keep that in mind, and please read the project description below!

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ IMPORTANT:

Two very important things to note. This project is 15+. This is partly because I am 18, and that's the age I'm comfortable working with, and also because of the subject matter at hand. There's a full list of trigger warnings in the document linked below, so please check that out before you audition!

The other thing of note is that this project is not going to put out in any 'traditional' format. It's going to be a dramatic reading of a screenplay, with elements of a audio drama and podcast slipped in as well. I will upload these readings to Youtube, as well as a transcript of the screenplay itself if anybody wants/needs to read along. With that noted, this project won't be very challenging to put together, so we can focus more on the voice acting and character work than anything else!

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ The Premise

The Otherlands is a TV show about magic.

It's set in a small area of Oregon, where only the people who have the gene for magic can remember it. This is because of an old curse that was put up fifteen years before the story starts. The reason behind this isn't known, but will be discovered as the plot goes on! The Otherlands is its own community, with different towns and species living inside it, hidden from the rest of the world.

Eighteen-year-old Beau Landon goes missing on a seemingly normal day, leaving his younger brother Henry a set of clues that only he was supposed to find. To make matters even more complicated for Henry, these lead him to discover that he can now remember the existence of magic--something he didn't even think was possible until that very day. He discovers that Beau's disappearance has something to do with this magical world, and makes it his goal to be the one to rescue him from the clutches of the organization that took him.

With the help of his best friend, a pair of magical twins, and a boy with fire powers that they end up summoning, Henry traverses the areas of the Otherlands to try and find Beau, all the while learning about magic and the world that it hides. But the further he gets, the more he realizes that things may not be what they seem. Even the members of his friend group are hiding things... and maybe Beau isn't the person that Henry thought he was.

As the show goes on into further seasons, its revealed just how complicated the organizations trying to take down that barrier are, and the characters get themselves wrapped up in the long battle that it's caused. Helping the world should not be such a complicated feat, but different people have different ideas on what the greater good really is.

If you'd like even further notes about this premise, please check out this document I wrote that goes into more detail! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1k1LpAA05mHWx506F3S-gL1Mb7voUdBfnHJ9phJa5ZWM/edit?usp=sharing

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ Extra Notes

The show highlights how nobody is truly good or bad, humans have the capability to be extremely nuanced. It also focuses heavily on character relationships (mostly platonic/familial), and how they help shape the fundamental core of a person.

Also, this a very queer-positive show. Almost the entire cast is somewhere in the LGBTQ+ community, though that's not something that's intensely focused on in the plot. There are some queer sub-plots, but it's mostly just a part of the character. Queer people are much more than their gender or sexuality, and they can grow and learn about themselves while living full lives that are focused on other things. That's something I wanted to show through The Otherlands, so most sexualities and genders are only referenced or implied through dialogue.

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ The Goal

The Otherlands is four seasons, with nine episodes in each. Even though I'm only casting for the first episode, the goal of this project would be to voice through all of them. If this pilot goes well, I'll put out more waves of casting for further characters that will appear later on!

I know that it may be discouraging to see that it's not a paid project, especially with the effort stated above, but I'm only a community college student. I currently don't have the funds to be able to do that, so I'm running this completely on my passion and love for the series.

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ For your audition! Please include your:

  • Name

  • Age

  • Pronouns⁣

  • Timezone

  • Discord

If you want to add your setup, that would be great as well, but it's not necessary.

Thank you so much for reading all of this, and I hope to see your audition below!

Latest Updates

  • A Very Small Update!

Hello! You may or may not have noticed, but I changed the project closing date to be exactly one month after I opened it. This is moreso for convenience--I would rather just put out a new project after this one closes that has the minor one-off roles, and any that I'm not able to cast after the first month.

Thank you, and have a great day!

Atlas (he/him) is sixteen years old. He's an Ember–a humanoid creature that is immune to and can create fire–who's just trying to find his place and people in the world. He doesn't seem to take much seriously, and he can be slightly aloof at times, but he has a big heart and is extremely emotionally intelligent.

This is a major role, and will be recurring in most future episodes except for one.

  • (Hopefully trying to sell himself) "The price! Right! So, I am going to give you a huge discount. It's going to be practically free! Instead of paying me any money, or items, you'll get protection for the simple price of..." (Drumroll...) "Me!"

  • (Anger, on the verge of tears) "You baited me down there, and f-for what?! Why the hell did I need to see that?!"

  • (Reluctant, solemn) "I messed up a few years ago. Really badly. It's the whole reason I'm not on good terms with my brother. A lot of people in the Firescape don't want to listen to my side of the story."

Evianna (she/her) is in her mid-thirties. She's the cruel and dangerous leader of the Incentive. She's selfish and stubborn, and seems to think that the entire world should bend to her whims. She lacks compassion and empathy.

I imagine her voice to be rather high, but not nasally. She gets quiet and smiley when she's angry, and that's when she's also her most dangerous.

Evianna is a recurring character in season one, as well as the first episode of season two.

  • (Sickeningly sweet, undeniable authority) "I'm here, aren't I? Be grateful that you're even on my schedule."

  • (Dripping with contained anger) [Note: Acheran is pronounced Ash-er-an.] "You need to learn to watch yourself, Acheran. One of these days, running your mouth like that is going to get you killed."

  • (Sweetly emotionless) "Hm..? What did you do? Absolutely nothing, Penelope. But sometimes, collateral damage is necessary."

Bellamy (he/she) is eighteen, and one of the newer members of the Incentive. She's not a bad person. She's curious and slightly awkward, and gets very enthusiastic about science and technology.

Bellamy is a recurring character in season one, with a small cameo in a later season.

  • (Excited rambling) "Oh! Magic is on a gene, right? Well- maybe the gene was hidden! See, there's this thing called epigenetics, and-" (she's suddenly cut off.)

  • (Horrible realization) "That's... normal for her? I-I just thought-- I assumed she'd get easier on us, as time goes on."

  • (Finding courage) "You-- are you ever going to treat me better than this? Or are you just going to keep using me like you have been?" ... ".. I quit."

Wyatt Pierce (he/him) is 19 years old, and someone who will listen to exactly what you want them to do. He's very loyal, even if he does try and do a little bit too much to get more power wherever he is. But he's kind, willing to step up if anyone around him--especially those younger than him. However, there's much more to him than meets the eye.

Wyatt is a very important character. Though he only has a very small cameo in season one, he comes back in season two and joins the main cast.

Current voice claim: Chuck Peizer (Just Add Magic)

It would be great if the voice actor for Wyatt could do accents and disguise their voice (especially Scottish), but that is optional! If you can, please demonstrate in the audition!

  • (Trying to make a new friend) "It's really nice to meet you! Let me know if you need any help finding anything, okay? This is my home away from home, I know it like the back of my hand."

  • (Ashamed, extening an olive branch) "I'm sorry, by the way... for not trusting you originally. I was too quick to judge you. Can we start over?"

  • (At the end of his rope with someone) "Give me one good reason why I should trust you. You almost killed them, and now you're looking to the authority that could save you. I'd bet my entire life that you're the spy."

Lauren Reed (she/her) is in her mid-thirties. She's the mayor of Middleville, and a woman who's willing to be as manipulative as needed to get what she wants. She appears very sweet and charismatic, but there is so much more hiding underneath her facade. She's cruel, but convincing. She's exactly what a politician should be, in her eyes.

Lauren is a very important character, and will become a recurring villain during and after the second season.

POC voice actor preferred, but not required.

  • (Meeting and trying to charm new people) "My name is Lauren Reed, the mayor here - and hopefully mayor re-elect soon!" ... "Oh, I'm so sorry! Am I coming off as nosy? I'm just curious about the people who visit my town - of course, stay or go whenever you want. "

  • (Slowly revealing her true intentions) "I really didn't want to do this. You two are good kids. I was hoping to knock some sense into you, but... I don't know if that's possible."

  • (Power-hungry) "Alright, then. If you really want me to let you go free... then beg. Get down on your knees and beg for my forgiveness."

Robin (she/they) is Lauren's 16 year old adoptive child. She's nervous and skittish, listening to whatever the people around her ask of her. She's very sweet if you get to know her, and a good friend, but the adults in her life don't exactly give her the opportunity to show that.

Robin is transfeminine and closeted. Please keep this in mind while auditioning. I imagine her voice to be soft and feminine, though not trained to sound perfectly like a girl's voice.

This is a recurring role, though she only has a small moment in season one, and a few recurring scenes in season two. She becomes extremely important as of season three.

NOTE: This character is related to some of the heavy topics seen in the show, such as manipulation and suicidal ideation. Please be warned before you audition!

  • "I'm... sorry. You don't deserve this, okay? Please understand that." (Do two takes of this line - one as if she's helping someone she found injured, one as if she was the one to cause the injury.)

  • (Breaking down) "I-I can't do this anymore, Kit! I can't- I can't do what she wants, I can't be who she wants- I can't be her puppet anymore!"

Charlotte (she/her) is the grandmother of two of the major characters. She's rich and accidentally entitled, though she doesn't exactly know that she's being rude when she is. She tries her hardest, though sometimes her hardest isn't enough.

Charlotte is a minor role in season one, who may come back for a line or two in future episodes.

(Please be okay with voicing a transphobic character! However, there is no aggressive transphobia, think religious grandmother who doesn't know any better.)

  • (Nervous, talking to someone who she's secretly afraid of) "What are you going through with, exactly? You still haven't told me what your goal is-- and... do I not need to know, being the host?"

Piero (he/him) is the middle-aged bartender who runs a diner in West Acres. He has a large connection to the conflict at hand, though he's been running away from it for many years now. He tries to keep everything lighthearted, though the ghosts of his past haunt him more than he'd care to admit.

Piero is a minor recurring role throughout the show.

I would like it if this voice actor could use a very slight Italian accent when speaking!

Edric James, or E.J, is 19 years old, and the twin brother of Arden. The loss of his sibling broke something in him, making him cold and desperate for revenge. He specifically hates Acheran and Atlas, thinking that they are the reasons that Arden is dead.

E.J is a minor role in season one, has a cameo in the third season, and then becomes a recurring villain in season four.

POC (specifically Black) voice actor preferred for authenticity!

Alec (he/him) is forty years old, and the slightly reclusive Captain of the Guard. He is the reason the barrier was put up in the first place, but it was an accident that he regrets every day. He's a kind but solemn man, and the ghosts of his past and his mistakes weigh down on him daily. He's trying to fix what he messed up, but that's not the easiest feat.

Alec's voice has a small cameo in season one, but he doesn't officially appear until season two. After his introduction, he becomes a main character.

He has a calm voice, tinted with nervousness at times. The voice actor should be able to sound quietly panicked, as well as utterly emotionally defeated.

NOTE: Please be okay with delving into heavy topics, such as grief, self-sacrifice, suicidal ideation, and other mental health problems.

Only looking for auditions from POC (specifically African-American) actors for authenticity.

Arden (they/them) is a character shown only through flashbacks. They were seventeen when they died. They haunt the narrative of one of the major characters, taking the role of the dead ex-partner. They were extremely sweet and bubbly while they were alive, wanting nothing more than to help the people around them and to live their life to the fullest.

Arden is a minor recurring role throughout the series.
