About the projectThe Mechadova Engine is an upcoming 15-episode queer steampunk audio drama. It takes place in a sci-fi world entirely confined to giant trains on rails in the sky. It has elements of alternate history, and takes inspiration from the late 1800s-early 1900s. It's a story about meaningless structures, the power of community, and how knowledge is preserved and retold. You can find more information on the website mechadovapod.com.
Potential content warnings include oppression, isolation, overt generational class differences, and implied police violence.
Production InformationThis show’s production doesn’t officially start until spring of 2026. We are planning to run all-or-nothing crowdfunding for the show in February, and the show will not happen if we don’t reach this goal.
For your work, you will receive a €15/episode you appear in minimum. This is below industry standard, as this is largely a hobbyist project. Each character description in this document should specify roughly how many episodes the different characters are featured in to give you an idea of scale.
Each episode runs at around 20-30 minutes, with a script word count between 3000-4000 words. How prominent each character is depends on the episode.
Some characters are only open to specific demographics, while others are more lenient. You don’t always need to match the exact same demographics as the character, though the underlined “Must be” statements should be followed. Please read the character descriptions carefully before auditioning.
This is a Non-Union project. We will record remotely. Recording will be asynchronous, though remote synchronous recording is always an option if preferred. Recording is planned to start sometime in May.
Some characters in this call may be asked to record a line or two for a teaser in January. Though you have a prominent say in whether this works for you.
No GenAI will be used in any part of this production.
Audition Guidelines
Please read the character descriptions carefully.
Auditions from people who are 18 or older will be preferred.
Feel free to do multiple takes in ABAB or AABB format!
Payments are in a range based on the potential episode amounts for each character as listed.

Zahra is in her 20s. She is a blunt biology student, who is frequently very stressed. She is kind and cares deeply about those around her, but can be too candid without meaning to. She is good at keeping things organized, and gets excited about painting and studying bugs. She is married to Tarek, and they love each other dearly, even if they can’t see each other often. Zahra experiences chronic pains, and sometimes uses a cane.
Zahra is an Arab and Muslim woman. Any voice range is welcome.

Tarek is in his 20s. He is the leader of a traveling theatre troupe. He loves storytelling, and gets excited about art and its potential to change the world. He is very shy and awkward unless he is acting, and is much more confident on stage. He is married to Zahra, and they love each other dearly, even if they can’t see each other often.
Tarek is Arab. Any voice range is welcome.

However, her truest passion is archival work, and she is deeply determined to keep a record of the people she gets to know and any ancient texts she comes across. She gets easily excited about her work.
Hestia can be any ethnicity and is transgender. Any voice range is welcome.

Deighton is in her 30s or older. She is a primary antagonist. Deighton is a wealthy conductor, working to enforce the law. She is manipulative, set in her ways, and determined to uphold the systems that benefit her. She sees no issue in taking advantage of others, and is skilled at finding people’s weak points.
Deighton is white and cisgender. Speaks in a controlled way, that can sound both sweet and cold when necessary.
