The Lost Tapes Episode 1 - Papa
Project Overview
The Lost Tapes is an original audio-horror series. It is written and will be directed by me. I will also handle the sound engineering.
It centers around a number of cassette tapes that each tell a different story, sometimes years or countries apart from each other. The tapes are seemingly unrelated except for a strange paranormal experience that each protagonist in each tape goes through.
This casting call will be for Episode 1, Papa. It follows the story of a man who returns home after going on an adventure to be greeted by his loving wife, who is delighted to see him, despite him having abandoned her without notice for almost a decade...
This episode is 7-10 minutes long (7 pages). This is an unpaid project but I will credit all voice actors and put some funds behind promoting the series. After the first season I expect to put up a Patreon page so I can pay those working on the series, including those who worked on previous episodes.
Requirements:
1. A good mic or good mic technique on your part. No background noise please. While I can edit out background noise fairly well it will hinder the production process and affect your audition.
2. You have to be able to act out the lines. This is all audio, the emotions and actions must be portrayed through your voice. Don't read the lines, perform them. The nature of the series has many parts that require bursts of emotion to portray the character. So prepare accordingly. There may be NO narrator in this series, so nobody will tell you how your character is feeling, you have to perform it!
3. Do not add effects to your audition, except for noise reduction if necessary. I want to hear your raw voice without effects. I'll be handling the post production for this series so I want to get a clear idea of what voice I will be working with.
4. The brackets are there for direction, you don't have to speak what's in between the brackets.
5. The Age is just for voice direction. You do not need to be 30 years old to voice Papa, for example.
6. Having a discord will be great as all cast members will need a central app to communicate with each other.
7. Each episode is a different story with different characters. So auditions that stood out but did not make it through will be saved and I may ask for your contact details to notify you when your voice will be needed for other episodes. Those that do get cast will most likely also be cast for future episodes.
8. Have fun!

So far I have some auditions that I've really liked! But the role of the child, Luke, is still open. I'm too old and "basey" to portray a child so I'll extend the deadline by a week.
This is Papa, he returns home after going on his "adventure". He's greeted by his wife but she slowly pushes him to anger and madness as she questions why he abandonded his family.
He is a quiet man. A man of few words. He loves his son, Luke, but he fears for what MAMA has been doing to their child while he was away.
Voice: Calm, quiet, loving. A little deep but not too gruff. Feel free to experiment with other renditions as well.
Age: 30-40
(After hugging his crying son, who he hasn't seen in almost 10 years) It's okay Luke. I'm home now. Nobody is going to take me away from you again.
(To his wife) I didn't abandon you! (Hands to his ears trying to block the screaming) SHUT UP!
I don't know...actually I'm not too sure about anything right now.
This is Mama. She's been cooking and cooking and cooking and...all these years waiting for Papa to return. Why didn't he take her with him? Didn't she deserved to go?
Mama as a character requires a pleasant and warm voice in the beginning. She hides her pain and her anger behind her beautiful smile and delicious cooking.
As you can see from the lines, her character progressively becomes darker and scarier while still maintaining her joyful housewife persona.
Voice: The best example of what I'm looking for is: The Other Mother from the movie Coraline. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyaGIaJsmTg
Age: Young Adult to Early Thirties.
Have fun with this one. Do not forget the maniacal laughter for the last line. It's very important. She is literally trying to kill him and is relishing at the fear in his eyes.
(She opens the front door and finds her long lost husband, Papa, smiling at her. She's missed him all these years).
Oh, dear. It's been so long.
(Whisper) I missed you.
(In shock, Papa dropped his plate of food that Mama cooked for him.)
Oh look, you’ve made a mess. All
that work, cooking and cooking and
cooking and cooking...for all
these...years. Waiting for you to
come home. From your adventures...
Didn’t think to take us did you?
(She turns around and
walks towards the kitchen
sink. She starts to cry.)
You don’t care about any of us!(Papa tries to escape but the door is sealed. He turns around and mother is sharpening her knives with a frightening grin on her face. Her eyes are wide. This is the happiest he's ever seen her)
You won’t escape this time! No
adventures for you, honey!I’d say
it’s time for a family dinner!Mama will need to do a progressively long
frightening laugh. Starting low pitch to high pitch. It gets
higher and louder the closer she gets to PAPA
This is Luke. The son that never was, or is. When Mama refuses to let Papa see their son, Luke fights back against her to welcome Papa home. This time, he will make sure that Papa never leaves again.
Voice: Child, soft. He's a boy but either male or female can audition for this. Sometimes the voice of a young boy is better when a girl voices it.
Age: 10 years old.
Papa? You're home! I missed you.
Please don't leave again, me and mama were so lonely when you left.
(Papa, trying to escape the noises in his head rushes to the door where Luke appears and blocks his way, sealing the door somehow. He's not crying anymore. He doesn't seem to show any emotion.)
Not...this time...Papa. I won't...let you leave
