The Last Summer — A Minecraft Reimagining of The Great Gatsby
Project Overview
The Last Summer — A Minecraft Reimagining of The Great Gatsby
The Last Summer is a scripted Minecraft adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. The series will follow the general story, characters, themes, and major events of the original novel while taking a number of creative liberties to make this its own interpretation of the story.
This will not be a one-for-one recreation of the novel. Certain events, scenes, relationships, and other parts of the story may be changed, expanded, removed, or reworked. Characters may also have different names, genders, personalities, or aspects of their backgrounds compared to their original counterparts. While the goal is for the story itself to remain recognizably The Great Gatsby, knowledge of the original novel is not required to audition.
This project will also be the first dedicated RP series made for the 2837 Productions channel. Unlike projects such as The Village Experiment and the other RP SMPs posted on Ivan2837_, The Last Summer is being designed as a more traditional scripted Minecraft roleplay. Rather than putting a group of players into an SMP and allowing the story to develop through a mixture of planned events and improvisation, this series will be built around scripted scenes, voice acting, body acting, cinematics, and a more controlled story from beginning to end.
Character Names
Every character in the series will receive a new name based on the person cast for the role. When auditioning, you will be asked to provide the name you would like your character to use if you are selected.
This name can be completely fictional and does not need to match the name or gender of the original Great Gatsby character. For example, someone auditioning for the Jay Gatsby equivalent could choose a name such as Mae Chua, Patrick, or something completely different depending on how they want to portray the character.
A first and last name is also not required. Your character can simply use a first name if that is what you prefer.
You may use:
A completely fictional character name
Your online name or creator name
A name you already regularly go by online
Please do not submit your real name unless it is already a name you publicly use online. For example, I already go by Ivan online, so Ivan would be perfectly fine for me to use as a character name.
The name you submit should ultimately be something you are comfortable being called throughout the series and being associated with your character publicly.
What to Expect When Auditioning
Each available character is based on an equivalent character from The Great Gatsby, but the casting is not restricted by the original character's gender. Roles may be portrayed by any gender, and parts of the character or story may be adjusted around the person ultimately cast.
Because several of these characters have romantic relationships within the story, applying for a role means you are comfortable with your character potentially being portrayed in a straight, gay, or lesbian relationship. The final relationships will depend entirely on who is ultimately cast for each role. For example, the Host and Lost Love may be played by two men, two women, or people of different genders. The same applies to the other romantic relationships within the story.
You are not expected to personally share your character's romantic or sexual orientation. This only concerns the fictional character you would be portraying. Please only audition for a role involving romance if you are comfortable portraying that character regardless of the gender of the person cast opposite you.
Auditions will include two provided lines intended to demonstrate different sides of the character. You will then be asked to improvise a third line in character. The improvised line does not need to be perfect or particularly elaborate. It is simply an opportunity to show how you interpret the character based on the description provided.
Because this is an adaptation, I am not looking for someone to perfectly imitate a performance from the novel, movie, musical, or another adaptation. I am much more interested in seeing what you can bring to this version of the character.

Gender: Any — Can be played as any gender
One of the central characters of The Last Summer. The Host is an extremely wealthy and mysterious individual known for throwing enormous parties at their estate, despite rarely seeming interested in most of the people attending them. Very little is publicly known about where they came from or how they acquired their fortune, resulting in countless rumors.
Behind the wealth and extravagant lifestyle, however, almost everything the Host has built revolves around someone they loved years ago. They are deeply romantic, ambitious, charismatic, and incredibly hopeful, but their greatest flaw is their inability to accept that the past may not be something they can simply recreate.
Role: Lead
Charming/Playful “You don't throw a party like this because you enjoy quiet evenings. Come on, stay awhile. I promise the night gets better.”
Frustrated/Vulnerable “I did everything I said I would. I became everything I was supposed to become. Why isn't that enough?”
*Say something you think would fit*
Gender: Any — Can be played as any gender
The primary POV character and narrator of The Last Summer. After moving into a modest home beside the Host's enormous estate, the Narrator becomes increasingly involved with a wealthy social circle they initially know very little about.
They are observant, relatively grounded, and often find themselves watching the conflicts around them rather than creating them. Their unusual friendship with the Host gradually places them at the center of the story.
The Narrator recounts the events of the series retrospectively, meaning this role will also include narration throughout the series, particularly at the beginning and end of episodes.
Role: Lead / Narrator
Lighthearted/Curious “I've only been here a few days and somehow I already know more about my neighbor from strangers than I do from actually meeting them.”
Angry/Disgusted “You don't get to disappear now. Not after everything that's happened. For once in your life, stay and face what you've done.”
*Say something you think would fit*
Gender: Any — Can be played as any gender
A charming and socially prominent person who shares an important romantic history with the Host. Years have passed since their original relationship, and they have since built an entirely different life with someone else.
Their unexpected reunion with the Host forces them to confront feelings and memories they believed were behind them. Although the Host sees them as the embodiment of a perfect future they were once denied, the real person is considerably more complicated than the idealized version that has existed in the Host's imagination.
Role Size: Lead
Playful/Affectionate “Look at you. All this money, all this confidence, and somehow I can still make you nervous just by walking into the room.”
Distressed/Conflicted “I do care about you! That's what makes this so difficult. You keep demanding an answer as if I'm supposed to know which part of my life I'm willing to destroy.”
*Say something you think would fit*
Gender: Any — Can be played as any gender
The Lost Love's wealthy and established partner. Confident, controlling, confrontational, and accustomed to getting their way, they occupy the kind of social position the Host has spent years attempting to reach.
Despite maintaining the appearance of a successful relationship and comfortable life, they are unfaithful and deeply flawed. They become increasingly suspicious of the Host's intentions and eventually emerge as one of the Host's greatest obstacles.
Role Size: Major
Relaxed/Confident “Come on, sit down. There's no reason we can't enjoy ourselves. We're all friends here, aren't we?”
Angry/Confrontational “You walk into my life, smile to my face, and think you're going to take everything from me? You're not nearly as clever as you think.”
*Say something you think would fit*
Gender: Any — Can be played as any gender
A confident, independent member of the wealthy social circle who becomes one of the Narrator's closest connections to this unfamiliar world.
Clever, observant, and sometimes cynical, the Friend often understands far more about the people around them than they initially reveal. They develop a close relationship with the Narrator while also serving as an important connection between the Narrator, the Host, and the Lost Love.
Depending on how the final adaptation develops, this relationship may contain romantic elements.
Role Size: Major
Playful/Teasing “For someone who claims not to like gossip, you certainly ask a lot of questions.”
Cold/Defensive “Don't blame me because you expected something I never promised. You knew exactly what kind of person I was.”
*Say something you think would fit*
Gender: Any — Can be played as any gender
A working-class individual secretly involved with the Partner despite both living very different lives.
They are deeply dissatisfied with their current circumstances and are attracted to the wealth, excitement, and status represented by the Partner's world. Their desire for something beyond their current life places them inside a relationship built on dishonesty and unequal power.
Although initially appearing disconnected from the Host's story, their actions and relationships eventually become extremely important to the tragedy that unfolds.
Role Size: Major Supporting
Confident/Excited “Tonight I'm not worrying about bills, work, or what anyone thinks of me. Tonight, I'm going to enjoy myself.”
Vulnerable/Frustrated “Do you think I don't know what this is? I know exactly where I stand. I just wanted to believe, for once, that it might become something more.”
*Say something you think would fit*
Gender: Any — Can be played as any gender
The Affair's long-term partner, who lives and works far removed from the luxury enjoyed by most of the main cast.
Generally quieter and more reserved than many of the other characters, they begin the story unaware of the full truth surrounding their relationship. As that truth gradually becomes impossible to ignore, grief, desperation, and manipulation pull them directly into the central conflict.
Their role becomes particularly important during the final portion of the story.
Role Size: Major Supporting
Warm/Affectionate “Once business gets better, maybe we can finally get out of here. Somewhere quieter. Somewhere we can actually start over.”
Distraught/Furious “Someone knows what happened. I don't care how much money they have or who they're hiding behind I'm going to find out.”
*Say something you think would fit*
Gender: Any — Can be played as any gender
A mysterious and well-connected associate of the Host who appears to know considerably more about the Host's rise to wealth than most people.
Their connections exist in less respectable parts of society, and their presence raises questions about how legitimate the Host's fortune actually is. They are friendly enough on the surface but clearly accustomed to operating in a world where favors, influence, and money matter.
Role Size: Supporting
Friendly/Relaxed “Sit, sit. Anyone important to my friend is important to me. Besides, nobody should discuss business on an empty stomach.”
Cold/Warning “There are people who can afford to make enemies. You aren't one of them.”
*Say something you think would fit*
Gender: Any — Can be played as any gender
The Host's parent, largely absent from the glamorous world the audience associates with their child.
Their appearance provides a glimpse into who the Host was before the mansion, money, parties, and carefully constructed identity. They retain enormous pride in what their child managed to accomplish, even if they never completely understood the life the Host ultimately created.
This is a smaller role but an emotionally important one, particularly toward the end of the series.
Role Size: Supporting / Limited Appearance
Excited/Proud “You should've seen the plans they used to make. Pages and pages of them. Most kids dream, but mine always seemed determined to make those dreams real.”
Heartbroken/Confused “They told me this house used to be full of people. So where are they now?”
*Say something you think would fit*
Gender: Any — Can be played as any gender
An eccentric guest encountered during one of the Host's enormous parties.
While most guests are interested primarily in drinking, gossip, and enjoying the Host's wealth, this individual displays a strange curiosity about the Host and the mansion itself. They recognize that there is a real person somewhere underneath the spectacle.
Despite being a relatively small character, their later presence becomes meaningful because of how few members of the Host's enormous social circle remain when the parties are over.
Role Size: Minor Supporting
Drunk/Delighted “I've been here for two hours, I've lost my coat, and I'm fairly certain I've been having a conversation with the wrong person. Wonderful party.”
Somber/Disappointed “I suppose it's easier to remember someone's parties than it is to remember the person who threw them.”
