The Fires of Frireon

The Fires of Frireon

Project Overview

The 15th century AFE, over 1400 years since the fall of the Natthewan Empire. A small group of agents from the Alliance of Countries scour the ruins of the ancient imperial cities for the disassembled components of an ancient magical artifact. The final piece they need lies deep in the area known colloquially as 'the Lava Lands,' a region of intense volcanic activity aggravated by magic gone awry.

In the heart of these lands is the old Natthewan city of Frireon. The city had always been small and poor but kept alive by mining that helped reinvigorate the dying empire. It stood for nearly five-hundred years during a period of low volcanic activity. Then, abruptly, that stability ended, and the entire land was destroyed in a cataclysmic explosion.

This is the story of Frireon's final days. Strange magic lurks in the fires of the Lava Lands. Magma surges to the surface at unprecedented rates. The reluctant governor, Ayleros Altorian, receives a dire warning from his estranged brother, putting his political aspirations in jeopardy once again and forcing a choice to decide the fate of every man woman and child in the burning city.

The Fires of Frireon is a standalone tale set in the world of the 'Legends of Keroa', a book series that I am writing but am yet to publish.

Audition notes:

1. Good mic quality, please.

2. Most roles require shouting or screaming of some sort. Roles that do not include Seshrek, Taru, Cali, Reyrode, Verdel, Kipe, and the three Alliance agents.

3. Elnay, Emiren, and Seshrek each use one instance of the word 'damn', so if that is an issue for you don't audition for those characters. Those are the only instances of (real world) swearing in the script.

4. The majority of characters are listed as 'middle-aged', but don't let that dissuade you from auditioning if you think you can do a good job. On a similar note, feel free to audition for as many roles as you want.

5. Just try your best with the names. I'll have a pronunciation guide for the actual project, but it doesn't matter for the audition. More important is that you make the names sound natural, however you choose to say them, and not like you're guessing or unsure of yourself.

6. I will be communicating primarily over discord once castings are completed.

7. If you have any questions/concerns, don't hesitate to dm me.

Latest Updates

  • Reopening casting

Due to having too few auditions for the number of parts in the project, I am reopening casting.
  • Casting

Thanks to everyone who has auditioned for this project over the past two months. Within the next few days I will be making casting decisions and will contact you individually to offer you parts. Thanks!
  • Deadline pushed back

Thank you so much to everyone who has auditioned so far. I'd hoped that this wouldn't be necessary, but I've decided to push the deadline of the project to September 25 to give people more time to audition, as we still have several important roles with no submissions. Thank you all for your patience, and I look forward to working with you soon.

The governor of Frireon. Wildly ambitious. Feels chained in the decrepit county of Frireon. The son of the former governor, he had always planned to seek his fortune elsewhere in the empire but found himself forced into the governorship of Frireon by his older brother. Has never given up on his dreams to reform the corrupt empire and is willing to go to extreme measures to make those dreams reality.

  • And what are we going to tell them? Life as they know it is about to end? They’re simple miners. They can’t just get up and leave.

  • If I’m part of a reconstruction then I’ll never get out of this city. I didn’t choose to be governor of this flaming pile of rubble.

  • I have another chance, Fuseph. A second shot at what you took away from me. I won’t let you rob me this time.

Ayleros' older brother and the Chief Warden of Frireon. Pragmatic but not close-minded. If Occam's Razor were a concept he was familiar with, he would subscribe to it. Content with his rank but uncertain in his ability to live in Frireon without his younger brother's friendship.

  • I don’t blame you. I don’t agree with everything you did, but you did it for the sake of the people.

  • (Angry) You think you’re the only one who doesn’t like the Lava Lands? I don’t think anyone does, but you’re the one who refuses to do their duty.

  • I made a promise to myself to fix things. I probably never can, but I'm at least going to try.

Ayleros' childhood friend and a warden in the nearby city of Glass Spire. Generally optimistic and a loyal confidante of the governor. Nevertheless, his greatest loyalty lies with his oath to the wardens and the protection of Frireon.

  • There are imminent eruptions in every corner of the Lava Lands. We’re looking at activity more violent than anything we’ve seen in centuries. More violent than anything that’s happened since the city was founded.

  • I never sleep well outside the cities. Too much noise, and the heat is unbearable. I hate having to wear this damn neckerchief whenever I want to go anywhere. It’s not that it's unbearable here, but it’s definitely not the life I would have chosen for myself.

  • (Angry) Look at yourself, Ayleros. Are you better now than you were before?

The Chancellor of Frireon. An old and trusted advisor who served under Ayleros' father. Speaks little, but when he does it is with good council. Believes in Ayleros' ability to rise above his rank, occasionally to the point of obsession.

  • He's not insane. If he says the cause of this is magic then I believe him. It’s no more implausible than any other explanation, and so far it’s the only one we have.

  • I say we seek it out and destroy it. This sort of force could threaten the entire empire. It’s our duty to end it. And no doubt the king would take note. He may even invite us to Tragan personally.

  • There’s no shame in admitting it, Ayleros. We all have our ambitions, and who’s to tell us our way is wrong? I’ve listened to you speak about how you’d change the system. You’d make life better for tens--hundreds of thousands. Isn’t that worth risking a few lives?

The seneschal of Frireon. Ambitious and divisive. Forceful in her plans. Cares about the people of Frireon, but often uses that care as a convenient excuse to advance her own fortunes.

  • There are things more important than your political ambitions, Ayleros.

  • (Forceful) Could we please get back to the topic at hand? The city is going to face a major eruption at any moment, and the governor won’t do anything!

  • (Conspiratorial) Then it may be time to remove good Ayleros Altorian from office and instate a new governor who will serve the people rather than herself.

  • You can’t risk your life like this, Ayleros. You’re the governor.

The commander of the guard in Frireon. An old soldier who worked for Ayleros' father. A simple man with simple beliefs. Straight to the point but with a tendency to reminisce on his past ventures. Unshakeably loyal to Ayleros and his most trusted confidante.

  • I hate dramatics. Why can’t anyone just say what they know? Your father was the same way.

  • I trust him. He knows what he’s doing. You wouldn’t have questioned his father like this.

  • (Reminiscing) This reminds me of a time I went with your father out to the spitting fields. This was before he was governor. We were going after some bandits who hijacked a shipment of glass to Vastay and were driving it across the Spitting Fields to the Narrow Road. A volcanic jet struck the middle of their wagon and blew it to pieces. We found their leader on her hands and knees scooping what glass she could find into a bag. We never found her accomplices.

Roiling fire. Pure energy cleansing the land. Yes. But trapped. Trapped in these lands. Find the sword, Sarnus. Find it for me.

  • Intruders. No! Trespassers. Thieves. Thieves on the mountain. Sarnus, there are thieves here! They’ve come for the sword. They want the sword. They want to take it from me. They want to stop its power. Trap it. Lock it up in a deep pit where it will lie chained forever.

The chief mage of Frireon. Old and forgetful. Awkward as hell. Uncomfortable in social situations, especially when asked questions. Intelligent but can't explain his ideas. Mumbly, so feel free to improvise filler words and phrases, etc.

  • Chief Warden, you wouldn’t know because you don’t use magic, but the Lava Lands are always magical. They’re one of the most magical places in all of Keroa. I haven’t noticed anything in particular, but you, uh...you sort of learn to ignore the background magic after you’ve been here for a time. The level of magic is always fluctuating.

  • (Uncertain) Are you sure governor. You could take a few more minutes to recover yourself if younso desired.

An emissary from the king. Arrogant, close-minded, and self-entitled. The king's son-in-law who was gifted his position through nepotism. Most concerned with ensuring the king and royal family (himself included) get to continue their lavish, comfortable lifestyle. Loves throwing the king's name around.

  • Your advisor here has been explaining the situation to me in length, and I regret to say that the king and I are extremely disappointed.

  • Enough, governor. I have heard more than enough. The situation is clear to me. You thought that you deserved the governorship just because you were the old governor’s son. It didn’t take long for your lack of talent to become apparent. Your outputs have dropped, and without a solution you decided to turn the situation to your advantage. I am going to begin my return journey to Tragan tomorrow and recommend your immediate removal from office.

A reclusive hermit living in the mountains near Frireon. Rumored to be attuned somehow to the ceaseless volcanic activity in the area--like a druid's attunement to nature. Ayleros' father occasionally consulted him for advice.

  • Magic. It is magic that disturbs the earth and raises the magma to the surface.

  • Your mages wouldn’t sense anything. This region is steeped in magic. It fills the earth and air. More than enough to obscure the eyes of the unattuned, but I know the feel of the land, and what I sense now is new. A strange magic. Somewhere to the west. I can’t say where precisely, but it is powerful. Impossibly powerful. The Lava Lands are screaming, governor. It won’t be long until they burst.

  • Ayleros, you are still young, and hungry, too, I can feel. There are forces in this world beyond any of us, and I fear that such a being may have descended upon these lands. Be careful, governor. It’s a dangerous journey back.
