The Driver's Side - A Short Horror Film

The Driver's Side - A Short Horror Film

Project Overview

The Driver's Side is a short horror film, telling a classic ghost story with a couple of impassioned twists. The exposition is delivered almost entirely through the radio of the protagonist's car as she drives along a desolate road.

All remaining voice acting roles can be recorded remotely, provided the VA has a decent home studio setup (or access to a decent studio). We're also very flexible regarding the genders of most the characters - the most important thing is the performance!

Recording for the roles listed here is scheduled for late September 2023.

My co-director and I both work within the film industry - I'm a voice actor; he's a composer - but this will be my debut film as a screenwriter and director. The team and I are very passionate about this story, but we're also working on a very tight budget and intend to launch a crowdfunding campaign to help pay our actors (most of our crew are friends and pre-established colleagues).

Please understand that we are aware the payment offered for these VO roles is modest and we wish we could offer more! Credit will be given to the actors, of course, and we would be happy to discuss additional deferred payment in the event that the campaign does exceptionally well.

Latest Updates

  • All Roles Have Been Cast!

Thank you all so much for your submissions! Everyone did a great job and we deeply appreciate your interest in our little film. As of this moment, all previously open roles have been cast and the call is closed.

We may be adding a few smaller roles over the coming months and are currently in the process of messaging some of you about that!

Otherwise, seriously, thank you all. You're amazing!

  • The Talk Show INTERVIEWER Role is Changing

    Hello again, everyone!

After hearing all of your wonderful auditions for TALK SHOW INTERVIEWEE, we've realized the opposite role - INTERVIEWER - needed to be retooled a little bit. I'll be removing that role from the list and adding a new one, specifically calling for female voices. We're so grateful to all of you who went out for this role and I deeply apologize for the last minute change. Please understand it's just a matter of creating a significant vocal difference and biological sex balance between the characters, as we're now 99% certain we'll be casting a male voice for the INTERVIEWER.

The submission deadline is drawing to a close for the remaining two roles and we couldn't be happier with the hard work and originality you've all brought to the table. The most difficult decision is proving to be Nick's Castle Promotor, as there have been a staggering amount of amazing auditions that would be perfect... This will not be easy for us!

Also, I'll be reaching out to a couple of you over the next couple of weeks to see if you're interested in being "on reserve" for potential additional voice lines needed in the film. We may be adding a couple of faux commercials to play between key audio moments, so if your submissions aren't chosen for the main roles listed, there's a chance we'll still want to cast you, if you're game!

    Hoping you're all well,

    Molly

  • Lisa / The Weather Girl has been cast!

We're a little ahead of schedule, but we knew as soon as we heard her, we had her. The role of Lisa / The Weather Girl has been cast!

Thanks so much to all of you who submitted auditions for this role. Everyone did a wonderful job. Please don't be discouraged if your submission wasn't chosen!

And congratulations, Kat Carter! Welcome to the team. :D

  • A huge thanks for a great first day!

I just wanted to thank all of you who've auditioned for your interest in the roles available and for all the wonderful submissions! We weren't expecting such a big turnout on the very first day and we're pleasantly overwhelmed. :)

Over the next couple of weeks, we'll be shortlisting our favorites - I've been trying to reach out to those of you who've already been shortlisted, but as I'm not premium, there's a limit on how often I can send messages. I'd like to reach out to all of you personally, it just may take a while.

If your submission isn't chosen or is dismissed, please don't be discouraged! There are a lot of factors we're considering here and a lot of it comes down to our goal of conjuring up the feel of classic radio stations, so it's a very specific sound.

    You guys are the best!

    ~Molly & Team

The Talk Show Interviewer is heard briefly as our protagonist scans through radio stations in search of comfort. She is discussing death with someone who lost their child in a drunk driving accident. Her tone is a mature, starkly realistic, and sympathetic one.

At a certain point, the discussion shifts. Our protagonist is spiraling and the voices from the radio begin to blend with her reality. The tone of the Interviewer changes to one of apathy and disgust.
