TBD - Dark Fantasy Audio Drama
Project Overview
STORY INTRODUCTION
Our story begins in a small secluded village just at the edge of the forest in southern Alcoria in the Kingdom of Gilderon. All along Alcoria people have gone missing in odd ways and all the clues are pointing towards the thick and unusual forests in the south.
Four travellers -- each with their own reasons -- have been chasing the horrors that have been spreading across the land and now find themselves in the village of Keld. They have no knowledge of each other prior but what happens in Keld will bring them together and put them on an adventure of a lifetime.
ME INTRODUCTION
Hey,
My name is J and I’m glad you found my CCC project. I hope it piqued your interest enough for you to want to audition.
This will be my first project of this kind and I undoubtedly will learn a lot along the way, so be mindful of that when auditioning. I’ve co-lead other projects before and can often be seen as a perfectionist, but I will try and quell those urges somewhat for this project. I’m trying to adopt the idea that a flawed but finished project is better than something trying to be perfect but remains unfinished. Even though I will try to be less perfectionist I will still set high standards.
My background is in audio -- everything from foley and sound design to orchestral film music and pumping dark techno -- so my expertise will mostly lie within the audio realm. Although, while I do enjoy writing I wouldn't consider myself a great writer and would appreciate all the help I can get from the team in that regard.
This is a project that’s big in scoop but small in resources so the more we can help each other the better. But for clarity's sake the tasks I will assign myself for this project will be the following:
Writing, Editing, Composing, Sound Design, Foley, Mixing, Publishing
And for the sanity of myself and everyone else, I will hopefully not need to do any VO work.
CONCEPT
The conception of this project began with my love for stories and writing, combined with my love for audio. Those two are usually exclusive to each other -- or at least not the easiest to combine -- so I set out to find a way to be able to combine both of my interests.
What I came up with was this idea for an audio drama with a full cast of actors and a full original soundtrack. I want this series to be like a movie without the picture where instead the narrator paints the picture in the listener’s mind -- like an audiobook with voice actors, sound effects, foley, and a soundtrack. I’ve been looking for something like this but haven’t found much I’m satisfied with.
If anything these World of Warcraft dramas are the closest:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsaobgFiiso
The story will be set in a world created by me and filled out by us with stories, characters, events, etc. I want this to be a collaborative effort where you help me write the story and where we decide where it goes next. I believe that if all those involved in the project have at least some emotional bond to the project it will be a better project for it. And if you as an actor can get into the head of your character enough you might be able to help me write them and make them better and more distinct and give them more of a unique voice.
Even though I feel like I would like this to be a collaborative effort, I will take the most responsibility for it and I will have the final say. And don’t fret if you feel like you don’t want to want to get involved in the project more than lending your voice, that’s totally fine. I understand. You should audition anyway. I don’t want you to feel over-encumbered with responsibilities. If all you want to do is read and act -- do it! I rather have you on the project than leave it because it becomes too much work.
It’s a dark story and I will touch on a sensitive subject; the malignant nature of humans is a big one. I will also reference rape -- hopefully only in passing and not too explicitly -- death and murder of both adults and children, sickness and plague, etc. So if you think any of this is too heavy for you, please do not audition for your own sake.
I won’t lie, the scope of this project is big. That’s why my first “milestone” is to only produce the first chapter. The first chapter is mostly a prologue and the narrator will be doing the heavy lifting, so not a lot of dialogue from the characters. On the other hand, the second chapter is looking to be mostly dialogue between the characters.
YOU
So where do you fit into the story? Well, you’re going to make it come alive. You will be at the heart and centre of this story. Since this story is currently only planned to be told via audio it’s very important that all parts of that are very interesting and well made -- especially the voices for the main characters. We want it to be something people would willingly listen to and that draws them into the world; we want it to heighten their immersion, not lessen it.
The idea for the characters is that they will not be one-dimensional and I will need actors who have a broad range of emotions to bring to the table. Even the strongest warrior might cry and the fairest-lady might roar like a true commander. Also if you can do multiple voices that a big plus.
If you like stories and reading that’s also a huge plus because there will be quite a lot to read.
So, what am I looking for in the auditions? I will be looking for a voice that fits the characters I have in my head as well as a voice that I feel can deliver a broader range of emotions needed to really convey what the characters think and feel without seeing them or explicitly telling the listener.
Of course, I already have a vague idea of what each character sounds like, and I will say that I’m a bit partial to any accents from the British Isles and would like there to be a coherency to the accents across the different Kingdoms. But other than that, I’m open to suggestions for the characters and their accents / tone and I will let you do your thing because I might very easily change my mind if I hear something that’s better than what I had imagined.
REQUIREMENTS (VERY IMPORTANT)
A good microphone is a must. At least something like the AT2020 (XLR) (great mic for not a lot of money) and a Scarlett interface. That is probably your best bet for cheap-ish equipment with great quality. USB mics are definitely subpar in quality but I would be willing to listen if you are really confident in the quality.
A quiet room with minimal reverberation. It’s preferred if you have a dedicated treated booth or closet for recording. If not, you would always use heavy blankets and build a very DIY vocal booth/blanket fort.
For me, of course, the easiest to mix would be if everyone would just use the mic with a treated room, but I know that is most likely not viable for a small, for-fun project like this.
Last but not least, I want the audition to be without any effect, meaning; no compression, no eq, no gain automation, no reverb, nothing. I just want the raw wav files. If this simple rule can not be followed it will be much harder for me to mix the different voices so that they sound coherent and as if they are recorded in the same space. Those auditions that can not follow this will most likely be rejected.
The files should be delivered in mono wav @48kHz and try to record them at -6dB at the loudest to avoid clipping.
I would recommend Audacity to anyone who’s not an audio-engineer and just want something simple and free to record. If you don’t know how to set that up, let me know and I will help you get started.
CLOSING WORDS
I think that’s everything. If you have any questions about anything, don’t hesitate to contact me. I know it became quite long-winded and I even cut a lot from the first draft of this casting call, but I didn’t want to miss anything.
Good luck with your auditioning!

Narrator
Eh... the guy or girl narrating the story.
Tone & accent:
Old-ish-man-voice. Deep and sturdy. I would definitely be willing to listen to any female auditions but not sure that's the direction I want to go with for this story.
A few examples:

Hoofs drummed in dampened thuds as the large black stallion galloped through the forest. A shimmering glimmer of a mailed figure could be seen between the trees as he raced by, black cloak adorned with gold trim whipping out behind him on the wind. In one hand he held the reins to his stallion and in the other a polished broadsword dripping with blood.
The figure cast a quick glance behind him. Nothing. But he didn't dare slow for he knew his pursuers couldn't be far behind, but soon he would have to if he didn't want his stallion to collapse, froth was already spilling from the corners of its mouth. The large warhorse wasn't made for long sprints but it had held up better than excepted.
Blood pounded in his ears and the steady rhythm of his horse's gallop drowned out the rest.
Just as he began to hope that he had outrun his pursuers, his eyes widened as he heard another sound; a high whine. He started to twist but too late. The arrow bore into the figure's shoulder, throwing him off the saddle and making him tumble hard into the dirt. As he rolled he heard a loud snap and felt as his shoulder dislocated.
He came to a slow stop as he lost his momentum. Disoriented he looked up. The world spun. After a moment the world began to settle again and he saw that a cloaked woman stood before him holding a crossbow. Under the rim of her hood, a grizzly smile of jagged teeth glistened softly in the light.
Arwen
Quiet, though, and careful.
His grand stature is the first thing people notice about him and that's usually enough for most to walk the other direction. But he's a gentle giant who likes reading and is quite intelligent which is contrary to what people believe at first sight. He's reserved and usually doesn't talk too much.
As a soldier, he did well, very well, but after his first proper deployment, he fled. He was drafted by the kingdom, and at first, he found the work he did tolerable. He quickly showed promise during battle training and was promoted and sent on a proper deployment. What he did there haunts as he flees across the Kingdom.
A hard upbringing has taught him to be careful around people and this has left him with a manner that's more reserved and many would consider him stoic or even rude.
Tone & accent:
A deep and full voice. Very powerful and steady. Maybe a slight Welsh or maybe even cockney. But only slight, not extremely prominent.

[Normal] Well, I'm just a traveller passing by, not much to it; the wrong man at the wrong place at the wrong time. If you think I'm some saviour, I'm sorry to disappoint.
[Bitter, telling about his experience as a soilder] For the most part, soldiers are nothing more than glorified thugs. Those in power know that to keep some regiments satisfied they will have to let them pretend like they are above ordinary people and turn a blind eye to allow them to terrorise smaller settlements and villages; as long as it's far enough away from them.
[Disdain] I wouldn't put it past these bastards to declare war on their own people if they thought it would profit them. [Sarcastic] Luckily for us, they need us to maintain both their jugs of wine and their society. Without the many, the powerful would have to make their own food and clean their own shit... and that would be unacceptable.
[Worried, anxious, gentle but still firm] Come on' girl, we need to leave... now. It's too late for them, but not for you.
[Screaming, waking up from a bad dream] Ahhhhh!!!
*Panting*
[Slightly shaky voice] I'm fine... It was nothing. Just a bad dream. [Slightly defensive] Yes, yes... I'm fine.
Say something you think would fit the character (or just anything if you can come up with anything) and show some more emotions.
Also, add some non-vocal sounds like grunts, screams, and such for pain, fear, and when doing something very strenuous.
Alary
Energetic, observant, and playful.
Alary grew up at the edge of the southern forest in Alcoria. She's a great huntress and has vast knowledge about survival and hunting. Growing up in the forest, at the edge of civilization, some would call her naive because she's never travelled or seen the world, and her inquisitive manner might not be the norm outside of her sheltered life.
She's by no means stupid, just doesn't understand how the world works outside of her small village. Travelling outside of her home village will teacher many new things.
Very youthful and kind, this is plain in her voice, but she's often teasing and sarcastic as well.
Tone & accent:
A slight Scottish or Welsh accent or something similar. But only slight, not extremely prominent.
A few examples (these examples are not perfect, Alary is more playful and less sombre):
Siri (The Witcher 3)

Rosabeth of Melfia (Dark Souls II)

[Normal] I'm not sure what to say. It's not really something I've dealt with before. It's probably better to handle by one of you. I'm positive you'll do fine. Just be yourself... Eh... On second thought, maybe not.
[Saddened as she's reminiscing] I grew up in that village... I have so many memories of that place. Of my friends and of my family. Where am I supposed to go now?
[Teasing] Woah, would you look at that! Even someone like you can look civilized with the right guidance. No, no, it's perfect.
[Playing hurt but actually finds it funny] Ha... ha... very funny. At least I know how to gather food.
Say something you think would fit the character (or just anything if you can come up with anything) and show some more emotions.
Also, add some non-vocal sounds like grunts, screams, and such for pain, fear, and when doing something very strenuous.
Vicar
Intelligent, pondering, and scatterbrained.
Vicar was given away by an early age to the academy when he showed promise as a scholar. He was taught how to read and write as well as... other things. As he rose through the academy's ranks people started noticing him, higher up people. But his inquisitive manner wasn't very welcomed and something happened during his time at the academy and he fell back down to become a simple bookkeeper.
After years of being a bookkeeper, he fled.
Whatever happened at the academy left its scars and he can sometimes be a mumbling mess. He's never been the most well-spoken person but on bad days he can barely speak at all, leaving him to not speak very often and can be seen as shy. On the other hand, he's seen as eccentric when he gets going and especially when he talks about something that interests him. His life evolving around books for the better part of his youth and early adulthood has left him with less than great social skills.
Tone & accent:
He's in his late 20s or early 30s I would and I have no real idea for his voice.
Examples of voices I like (Not the greatest for this character, just general voices I like):
Bighat Logan (Dark Souls I)

Cale the Cartographer (Dark Souls II)

[Normal] It's actually true; we are moving north judging from the stars, and Halvik should be just beyond that mountain. If we hurry, we could make it before nightfall.
[Amazement] Remarkable... Really, something like this has to be hundreds -- if not thousands -- of years old. A long lost civilization.
[Confused and mumbling, trying to get his whirling thoughts togather] I... No... It's... I'm sure I know this. *Sight* I have read about this and I know something about it, just can figure out what. [Exasperation] Ahh! [Despondent and saddened] Forget it... Damn it all to hell.
Say something you think would fit the character (or just anything if you can come up with anything) and show some more emotions.
Also, add some non-vocal sounds like grunts, screams, and such for pain, fear, and when doing something very strenuous.
Eliana
Quiet, mentally strong, and proper.
Eliana grew up in captivity and was taught from the moment she was born to serve her lords. She was taught how to read, write, and to be a lady so she would be more useful and not bring shame upon the household she served. She managed to break the chain and is now free... But how free is she really?
Very proper in both her mannerism and the way she speaks because of her upbringing.
Tone & accent:
Not sure about her voice. I want it to be soft and angle-like, ethereal. I'm not sure about the accent, don't really feel like going the posh English way.
A few examples of voices I like:
Yennfer (The Witcher 3)

Fury (Darksider III)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53xhbvW8ySI&t=5

Fire Keepern (Dark Souls II)

[Normal] I doubt we'll make it before sundown. We have no mounts, there are no villages along the way, and we will have to stop for water and food along the way.
[Normal] Yes, I know how to read. It was required of me to be able to help the young lord with his studies.
[Controlled anger] Listen, it's not as if I choose my fate, but this is what I was dealt and I will do the best with it. At least I get to make my own choices.
Say something you think would fit the character (or just anything if you can come up with anything) and show some more emotions.
Also, add some non-vocal sounds like grunts, screams, and such for pain, fear, and when doing something very strenuous.
Minor roles:
Blacksmiths, innkeepers, crowds, priests, etc.
Village hunter:
Jarvan found something along the old tracks by the bog. We are moving out in a minute so gather your things and get ready to march. Check your equipment and get ready for a long night.
Or just say anything really that you think would fit the character you have in mind.
Send something you've written. I would appreciate something that's more akin to a book than a poem or essay, also it's a big plus if it's something dark.
