Super Mario Bros. Movie Pitch

Super Mario Bros. Movie Pitch

Project Overview

I've put together a pitch for a hypothetical Super Mario Bros. movie that's meant to convey ideas for what my ideal Mario movie should do. It focuses heavily on the relationship between Mario and Luigi, gives each character their own individual arc, and incorporates elements from other Mario-related media in a way that could please longtime fans and avoid alienating general audiences. I'm hoping to produce an animatic-like presentation that will include storyboards, music, sound effects, and snippets of voice acting to heighten the experience.

This is just a pitch. I don't plan on actually making this into a real movie.

Here's the pitch in its entirety: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1E58Bpkpe-qGWRByG-qr8D_QotcW4nj3PxNsVi_T_WQw/edit?usp=sharing

  • Cast assembled

Everyone has officially been cast! I had to think long and hard about who I thought would be just right for each role, but after listening to every single audition over and over again, I was finally able to narrow it down to these lovely people: TheGonzfam as Mario and Luigi SnoozyVO as Princess Peach TheBreezyGuy as Bowser Mildhot-Sauce as Toadbert CinderPint as Kamek But even though I have the main parts cast, that doesn't mean I won't need any additional voices. There are still two days left to send in auditions, so if you want to be part of this project, don't be afraid to send stuff in!
  • Mario and Luigi casting

Congratulations to "thegonzfam" for landing the roles of both Mario and Luigi! And a very special thanks to everyone that sent in auditions! I'm still waiting on more people, so I'm gonna take a bit of time with casting the remaining roles. Also, to anyone worried about not getting a specific role, that doesn't mean you won't be able to take part in the project still. I may need additional voices, so I'll be sure to get in touch with you should something come up.

I'm going on vacation next week (by the time I'm writing this) and after that I'm gonna be busy with a few things, so I won't be able to listen to the auditions or reach out to anyone right away until I get closer to the deadline.

Mario in this pitch is very headstrong and adventurous. He and Luigi work as plumbers in the Mushroom Kingdom, and while he enjoys it, he wants to live a more exciting life and dreams of being a hero.

As for the voice, I definitely want him to have a higher pitch like in the games, but I'm not looking for exact emulations of a specific Mario performance, so either an Italian or New York accent or a mix of both is fine. Most importantly, I want him to be heroic, lovable, and driven.

  • I love making things better for other people, but I just feel like I could be doing more for them than just fixing toilets.

  • This is our chance to prove that we're more than just plumbers!

  • I hope this works. Let's-a go!

Luigi is very timid, anxious, and less willing to jump into danger than Mario. In this pitch, Mario and Luigi's arcs reverse over the course of the film. Mario starts out wanting more than just being a plumber, and Luigi (not yearning for adventure the same way Mario does) just wants things to stay the same. But by the end, after Mario gets the chance to be the adventurer he's always wanted to be, something happens that makes him think he failed. He doubts himself thinking he'll never be more than just a plumber, so it's Luigi that encourages him to get up. Mario learns that he can be more than who he is while holding onto what he already has, and Luigi learns to embrace his new hero identity and is made braver as a result.

Like with Mario, I'm not looking for a spot-on impression. Just something mid to low range akin to Charles Martinet's performance, with either an Italian or New York accent, but also erratic, nervous, awkward, and innocent.

  • Mario! What were you thinking?!

  • No other plumber can say that they've done the same things we have. And there's no one else I would've rather done those things with than you. (referring to Mario)

Princess Peach is the daughter of the Mushroom King. Bowser's been gone for her entire life, so she grew too accustomed to living the calm and gentle lifestyle she was raised in. So when Bowser eventually returns, it's off-putting for her. She isn't quick enough to act at first, so she gets taken captive. But after managing to escape, she's able to grow stronger and become more capable, which will help make her a powerful leader in the future.

Peach in this pitch has a very sweet and cute exterior, but is also very no-nonsense and can be a bit snarky. I want her to have a pure and clear speaking voice, and I want her to be very gentle and kind with a little bit of edge.

  • Bowser and his army were defeated long before I was born. All these years I thought he was just the monster from the bedtime stories my father used to tell me. (chuckles) Reality sure has a way of imitating fiction.

  • (when tricking someone) I don't play too many video games these days. They tend to make one a bit... (pause) ...distracted.

  • Mario! Catch!

Bowser is the main villain of the pitch. He returns after having been defeating several years prior to the events of the film, and he makes his presence known. He's loud and bombastic like the Joker in the first Tim Burton "Batman" movie, but also arrogant and egotistical akin to his appearance in the "Super Mario Adventures" comics. He's a brute with a short temper, but is also very cunning and manipulative, holding Peach hostage to force the Mushroom King to give him control of the kingdom.

I want Bowser to sound similar to Kenny James's portrayal in the games, but I also want him to have pompous and almost rockstar-like qualities.

*This is another role that doesn't have many lines, but I will add additional dialogue if the video calls for it

  • Everything you love will be mine for the taking! Starting with her! (referring to Peach)

  • (evil laugh)

  • (long, aggravated roar)

Toadbert is a local resident of Toad Town, based on the character of the same name from "Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time". He idolizes Mario and Luigi after they help him with a plumbing emergency, and like Mario he dreams of being more than who he is. Toadbert has wanted to join the Toad Brigade ever since he was little because he thought it would help give him a purpose, he has a desire to help others, and he's never had anything to make him stand out from other Toads.

While Toadbert is canonically male, since the Toad voice doesn't have any distinct male or female qualities, gender is irrelevant when casting this part. I imagine him having something akin to the Toad voice, but more like a generic young boy mixed with the character Bentley from the "Sly Cooper" games.

*This role doesn't have many lines, but if I feel it would help add to the video, I can add additional dialogue.

Kamek is a Magikoopa that works for Bowser. In the film, he is sent out to prevent our heroes from foiling Bowser's plans. And at one point, Kamek traps Mario and his friends in a hectic series of illusions, similar to the Mysterio sequence in "Spider-Man: Far From Home".

I want Kamek's speaking voice to be similar to the noises Magikoopas make in the games, but with more of a deranged and scary feel to it.

  • The Forest of Illusion is full of surprises. Conquer my maze and you will see.

  • (eerily) My work here is done.

  • (maniacal laugh)
