Sleeping Beauty Genderbend Audio Drama
Project Overview
It's been a long time since I've done a project like this, but I decided to pick it up again! For the first time, I am not using one of my own stories but turning a story I read on FanFiction into a recording. I got in contact with the wonderful author, TheEpicPenguin (https://www.fanfiction.net/u/4126271/), and she allowed me to use her story for my next project!
The story is a genderbent retelling of Sleeping Beauty. When Prince Rory is cursed by the evil sorcerer, Malefor, the only solution to be thought of is to hide the prince in the forest with the Sparrow Men who hide his true identity from him. He lives there for nearly eighteen years as Bryan, a lonely peasant.
One day, a woman wanders through the woods and the boy is struck by her beauty and kindness. She introduces herself as Petra and unbeknownst to him, she is the princess of the neighboring kingdom. The two strike up a friendship quickly, but before anything can progress, Malefor makes his move and the fairies are forced to tell Bryan who he really is. He returns to the castle...just as Malefor appears. Threatening to kill Petra unless he does what he asks, the prince willingly puts himself under Malefor's curse.
It's up to Petra to break out of Malefor's prison and save the prince and the kingdom before it's too late.

The narrator of the story. The role has many lines and requires a lot of talking. Because this role also carries much of the project, your voice should be smooth and easy on the ears. Please be ready to record a LOT of dialogue if casted.
Due to so many male roles in the story, I am looking for a female narrator.
As Malefor had said, the young prince had grown to be everything the Sparrow Men had wished for him, and more. Tall and lean, with gentle features and shining golden hair, he was loved by everyone around him, though unfortunately that had only ever included his forest friends.
Bryan watched Petra straining against her bonds. A cry of agony escaped her lips, and the sight was like a dagger in his gut. He was selfish even to hesitate this long. He could never let her die.
A very kind young man who knows nothing of his true heritage. Having lived in the forest all his life, he has become acquainted with many of the forest animals and takes care of them daily. His heart is large and he will do anything to keep those he cares about safe. He quickly befriends Petra upon meeting her, and the two of them are smitten with one another.
Voice: sweet, gentle
(gentle but firm) I can't allow you to use it to hunt my friends. They trust me to protect them, and I could never just stand aside and watch them get hurt.
(when Petra questions why he hadn't mentioned it's his birthday; nervous) Oh, I—it just never came up, I guess.
(to Malefor) Why did you bring me here? What do you want from me?!
The princess of the neighboring kingdom who is smitten with Bryan upon meeting him. She is a tender-hearted young woman who continually sneaks out of the castle in order to get away from the stifling palace conditions. She prefers to spend her time outdoors rather than take lessons or stitch samplers and uses various methods to get out of the castle without her father knowing.
When Malefor curses the prince, the Sparrow Men help Petra escape, knowing she is the only one who can break the spell. Petra then fights as hard as she can to defeat Malefor and save the prince before it's too late.
Voice: beautiful, gentle, can be rather snarky at times
(when Bryan says he shouldn't talk to strangers) Well, technically, I talked to you first, so I don’t think it counts.
It’s your birthday tomorrow? And you’re just mentioning this now?
(to Malefor who has imprisoned her) A curse? What did you do to him?! If you hurt him, I swear, I’ll kill you!
The evil sorcerer of the kingdom who curses Prince Rory at birth as revenge for the king killing his father prior to the events of the story. Malefor is very cunning and strategic. He keeps an eye on Bryan the entire time he is growing up and threatens to kill Petra if the prince does not prick his finger. Malefor then imprisons Petra so there will be no chance of breaking the curse. When Petra escapes, he transforms into a monstrous dragon and attempts to kill her but Petra defeats him.
Voice: very sultry and calm, teasing, confident, medium-low
(when asked to leave the party; pretend shock) Oh, dear…how dreadfully awkward. I suppose I had hoped it was all just a misunderstanding. What was that? Did I just hear the great king begging me for mercy? How very touching. Had you showed some, I might just be inclined to return the favor.
(just before turning into a dragon) Alas, princess, you force my hand. Now you shall have to deal with me!
*best evil villain laugh*
One of the Sparrow Men who cares for the prince during his youth. He later frees Petra from Malefor's prison and assists her in defeating him. The leader of the group considered to the wisest of all of them.
Voice: medium-low, fatherly
Young man, where were you? You know the rule is that you have to be home for supper unless you tell us first!
(sarcastic) Oh, really? I thought that was what your brilliant plan was all about. We’ve done what you suggested; we’ve brought the boy home—ahead of schedule, I might add.
Be calm, princess. Everything is alright. The sorcerer is dead.
One of the Sparrow Men who cares for the prince during his youth. He later frees Petra from Malefor's prison and assists her in defeating him. The more reasonable and level-headed one of the trio.
Voice: medium-low, fatherly
Bryan? Would you happen to know where the last of the bread went? (no response) I take it that means, ‘yes’?
How could this happen? We took every precaution! What do we do?!
I’m sorry we weren’t able to do more. We are not healers, so our abilities are limited.
One of the Sparrow Men who cares for the prince during his youth. He later frees Petra from Malefor's prison and assists her in defeating him. He frequently disagrees with Aspen on what's best from Bryan since he knows Bryan is a grown-up and not a little child any longer.
Voice: medium-low, fatherly
Oh, lighten up, Aspen, won’t you? He’s not a boy anymore.
How DARE you say I don’t care about Bryan! You think I wouldn’t have changed places with him that day if I could have? But I couldn’t! None of us could! Malefor was too powerful, and he still is! At this point, the boy’s only hope is for us to tell him the truth, so that he can be on his guard! It has nothing to do with you or I!
You did it, Princess. Malefor has been vanquished.
Petra's father. He is very stern with Petra because of his strong sense of duty and the rules in place for those of royal stations. While he truly does care for her, it is hidden beneath his kingly exterior. As her father, he acknowledges her astounding strength and wisdom, but as king, he knows that she must marry for political reasons.
Voice: low, stern
You are strong, Petra. But your strength is misdirected. You are rebelling when you should be channeling that strength into searching for a man worthy to rule by your side.
Petra, surely you are more intelligent than to let your emotions cloud your judgment. Kindness or no, a peasant could never make a suitable king!
The Captain of King Peter's Royal Guard. He is an older man who is very good friends with Petra and even helps her sneak out of the palace to see Bryan. While a very good commander and an excellent leader, he still can be very light-hearted and humorous.
Voice: medium-low, friendly
Are you alright, Princess? Merlin’s beard, what happened to you?!
(with a knowing smile) Perhaps I can delay the vanguard a bit, m’lady. Who knows? We might just find ourselves one man short.
Prince Rory's father. Prior to the start of the story, Theodore led an army of soldiers to kill Malefor's father. For this reason, Malefor curses his only son to death. He attempts to burn all spinning wheels, but his efforts are useless. Thanks to Petra, he and the queen are reunited with their son.
Voice: low, firm, fatherly
Malefor, I will only say this once: leave us! Leave my castle and never return!
(to Petra) You have our unending gratitude, Princess.
Prince Rory's mother who is very protective of her child. Thanks to Petra, she and the king are reunited with their son.
Voice: medium-high, motherly
(excited) We're going to have a child at last!
(timid but firm) You’re not welcome here.
