Sherwood And The Infinite Lullaby - Arc One

Project Overview

Sherwood and the Infinite Lullaby is a visual storytelling experience, where the original soundtrack plays a large role to parallel the events and aid the narrative in telling an otherworldly tale.

Listen closely to the somber story of a lone wolf, Duke Sherwood, who is thrown into a grim quest to restore the fabric of reality, when the void, the infinite space between all dimensions, has begun to bleed into various physical realms, causing countless complications from those within. While facing each troublesome obstacle comes a lesson to be learned for our protagonist Duke Sherwood, in a powerful journey of self-acceptance and discovery.

The first arc of Sherwood And The Infinite Lullaby has an underlying theme of self-dependence and independence, for when it comes to overcoming the grandest of obstacles, Duke learns to trust his instincts, to listen to the voice in his head, and not rely on others to help make decisions for him. The later arcs will also have a major underlying theme that Duke and various other characters will learn to overcome.

This project is 13+ as it will/potentially could contain violence, use of explicit language, and themes that may be sensitive to some viewers.

This project contains characters who identify within the LGBTQ+ community.

  • End Of November Update

Hello everyone! Thank you all for your hard work with your auditions. Know that it was very fun hearing everyone's renditions and we appreciate every single one of the auditions greatly. Where the deadline has been reached, the casting of official characters, Devalem, Argo, and Kedahn, will happen by this Sunday, the 29th of November. That being said, I will leave the casting call open to the remaining roles (ie. Writers, Artists, Extras, etc.) till the end of next month, so there can be more people to help with the behind the scenes aspects of Sherwood And The Infinite Lullaby as a whole. I'll say again that I cannot stress how important it is to audition for extra singers and voice actors! As the production's script and story develop, more characters will be added, and it mightn't be worth opening a new casting call again, although I cannot say for certain. I thank you all again for your time and effort, and I hope you will all stick around to experience Sherwood And The Infinite Lullaby with us. Cheers to you all, benjemima
  • November Update

Hello, everyone! Thank you so much for all your tremendous efforts with auditioning this past month, we really appreciate it! I've decided to extend the deadline to the last Friday of this month, as I do not think now is the right time to wrap it all up, so there's still more time to audition if you have not already, or if there is a role you were considering auditioning for. My plan for the next few days is to sort through which auditions are the best contenders for the character roles, which means that if you notice your audition has been rejected, it does not necessarily mean your performance or talent by any means is low, it just means that you weren't quite right to play the specific role. This is why I stress that the option to audition under the 'Extra Voice Actors' or 'Extra Singers' roles is very important because we will eventually need voice actors for new or background characters and singers for ensemble pieces or other solo works. Thanks again! - benjemima

Devalem is of an otherworldly species, called Fellenyans, who are people whose souls have bonded with that of an animal. In his case, his soul is bonded with a Golden Eagle, and in Fellenya, those with the soul of an eagle are of royal caste.

Devalem is an incredibly well-composed, smug, and cunning character, which can often be perceived as being cold-hearted or pretentious, which further distinguishes his position as heir to the throne (or prince) of Fellenya. However, it is Deva’s way of assessing a situation, regardless of the gravity, allowing him to act logically and just. Like the Golden Eagle, Devalem is extraordinarily agile, in thought and in action, only facilitating his nimble, vigorous combat style and graceful way of movement.

As for his voice, I’m looking for a deeper than average, semi gruff or gravelly voice, but a nice balance of warmth and cold in the tone. With lots of attitude, he is quite condescending towards certain people, especially those he dislikes, and of course the antagonists he faces. For reference, use Grant George, who voices Gilgamesh in the Fate/Staynight: Unlimited Bladeworks English dub.

  • In this line, Devalem is confronting a hive-mind species known as The Paragon, who lurk within the void in means to protect it from those who wish to pass through. Read this line with a sense of anger and pride, not often does one stand against these ominous creatures.

“...We, like many others, seek nothing more than that. Not to disrupt your ancient slumber, not to leave a scar on this barren paradise, we only hasten because a purpose lies beyond, and certainly one greater than you’ll ever live to know... Even if the blood on the bottom of our boots leave footprints in our trail, even if each breath renders the air stale, our hearts carry more merit than the slightest humanity you leech on to. You aren’t protecting the fabric of reality. No... you are the moths that feed upon it.”

  • In this line, Devalem reluctantly shares his feelings of the protagonist Duke Sherwood. Initially, Devalem had ill expectations of Duke and his capabilities. Act as though you don't want to believe it, but keep it genuine all the same.

“You know that I am true to my word, Sherwood… And yet, I’ve done some reflection in our time together. I first thought of you as a shameful representation of the one who would deliver reality from its inevitable destruction, but now I see that you are more than that. You’re a friend, and an honest man… don’t let that go to your head.”

  • In this line, Devalem recites an incantation, more of a prayer, when opening the void to access another dimension. Build the energy as you go, like a crescendo throughout the whole line ('Ex Nihilo' is the highest point in energy).

“My voice is hollow... and my soul runs dry… so that the veils of space may drape against each foreign universe like a gentle snowfall… But now, hear me Lillith, and obey my call; let the curtains of the void unsheath our boundless path so that we may peer behind with fragility. See that my word is final and my journey everlasting… Ex Nihilo!”

Where both the voice acting and singing part of Devalem's character play quite an important role, I'd like there to be two separate auditions for this reason. I'd recommend auditioning for both, however, if you are one and not the other, still audition for the one you wanted to, it won't be an issue to find the closest match of voices.

For his singing, I'm looking for a tenor range, if not at least baritone. Devalem's people, the Fellenyans, pride themselves in their music, and being royalty is no exception. His voice should be powerful and bright, a good in-between of pop and musical theatre tone. As in dark enough to be pop, but bright enough to be musical theatre, as long as you're somewhere in the middle.

For the options below, choose at least two of the three (feel free to do all three if you would like). If you're doing a song of your choice, please sing at least 16 bars. Feel free to add a backing/karaoke track to your recordings. Record the songs in your desired key as well.

Here are the links to both Deliver Us and Lost In Thoughts All Alone.

  • Sing the lullaby portion of 'Deliver Us' from The Prince Of Egypt as follows:

"Hush now, my baby, be still now, don't cry
Sleep as you're rocked by the stream
Sleep and remember my last lullaby
So I'll be with you when you dreamRiver, oh river, flow gently for me
    Such precious cargo you bear
Do you know somewhere he can be free?
    River, deliver him there."

  • Sing the Birthrights verse of 'Lost in Thoughts All Alone' from Fire Emblem Fates as follows:

"In the white light, a hand reaches through
A double-edged blade cuts your heart in two
Waking dreams fade away, embrace the brand new day."Sing with me a song of birthrights and love,
The light scatters to the sky above
    Dawn breaks through the gloom
White as a bone, lost in thoughts all alone."

  • Sing at least 16 bars of a song of your choosing.

Argo

Argo is part of a race known as Concordians, who are people born from song, due to mysterious refraction in the void.

The name Argo is extracted from “agoraphobia”, which is a type of anxiety disorder in which you fear being in situations where escape might be difficult or that help wouldn’t be available if things were to go wrong. Argo is no different; being a Concordian is nevertheless an issue when it comes to going out in public, with antlers and pointy ears and all, but it takes a lot of mental power before he can bring himself to go just about anywhere. When interacting with other characters, Argo is very hesitant to follow their trust and will hide behind or stay close to those he has the most trust in. In this arc, he is the final representation of independence, as Argo has lived for the majority of his life completely alone, due to his agoraphobia.

For Concordians, it is common for them to have two voices; one for telepathic communication, and the other for when they sing, as their voices are too powerful for mortal ears to hear if they haven’t learned to control it. For his talking (or communicative) voice, think of a softer, more monotone voice, with an overall frailness. Take into account that no matter where he is or who he’s with, that agoraphobia is still lurking, so keep a sprinkle of that anxiety in the way he speaks as well. And of course, the gaps are for interpretation based on the details given.

  • In this line, Argo shyly requests something from the character Elise, who, like Argo, is also a Concordian. Be very hesitant with your words, like you think you'd bother her with this request, but slowly build the courage to ask her.

“Could you do something for me, Elise? It’s fine if you can’t but I just- I know you have horns, like I have antlers, but you’re always out in the open, and I’ve heard of the aria that helps conceal them…Can you teach it to me?”

  • In this line, Argo is very agitated with Duke Sherwood, who tries his best to lend a helping hand although it backfires. Argo has seen many people fail to try and help him, so he doesn't take lightly to Duke's attempt.

“No, I don’t need your help, I’m fine on my own. And don’t try and tell me you’re here to ‘help’ me, cuz you’re nothing more than a Boy Scout here for his next badge; you’re only here for your own gain, to boast about how you helped the weak and lonely boy who lives out in the woods by himself. I should pity you for even trying."

Unlike the character Devalem, who has one voice, Argo has two: One for telepathic communication, and the other for singing, as a Concordian's physical voice is too powerful for mortal ears to hear if they lack the skill to control it.

For key reference, use Chris Cornell, who was the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the rock bands Soundgarden and Audioslave. Of course, it's impossible to find an exact match, so try your best to get somewhere around that vocal sound, but not to the point where it becomes an impersonation or impression. Compared to Chris Cornell, Argo's range is on the lower side. Feel free to add a backing/karaoke track to your audition.

Here is a link to 4th Of July by Soundgarden.

  • Sing up to and including the chorus of Soundgarden's, "4th Of July" in your desired key.

  • Sing at least 16 bars of a song of your choosing.

Kedahn Regia

Role assigned to: smittysmash

Like Devalem, Kedahn is a Fellenyan, evident by his ears, those of a brown bear.

At first glance, his height of 8 foot 2 and his remarkably brawny figure, may deceive a passerby. Kedahn is nothing more than a softie with a sensitive heart. Assigned as the royal guard for Devalem, he is very protective over the prince and will stand as a difficult opponent if threatened. Kedahn uses his short-tempered rage to his advantage, using the fury as fuel for unmatched strength during combat. Basically, don’t poke the bear.

Just like his appearance, his voice only adds to the deception of his guise. He‘s very well-spoken and clear, with a softer, more gentle way of speaking during regular conversation, although not afraid to raise his voice for the sense of intimidation and authority in certain situations, especially when irate. Keep the pitch to a lower tone, anatomically speaking his voice should be proportionally deep. As always, it is up for interpretation based on the details described for how you think he should sound in your mind.

Kedahn will have very minor singing parts, nothing overly difficult to sing, therefore he does not have a separate singing role unlike the two characters above.

Here is Leaves Of Yggdrasil, by Myrkur (here is a performance in a higher key if you would like to follow it instead).

  • In this line, Kedahn is furiously defending Devalem as the monarchs of Fellenya attempt to abolish his position as heir to the throne

“That’s enough! Forgive me, your majesties, but this is absurd. Despite the prince’s absence during this troubling turn of events, it gives you no right to seize his position as heir to the throne. While you were sitting idly by, waiting for the Void’s wounds to heal like a measly paper cut, Deva was proving his worth on Locked Earth, and just because he wasn’t on your leash for once in his life, you dare to even think to spoil his pride as Fellenyan’s crown prince?”

  • In this line, Duke is questioning his own significance in helping restore the fabric of reality, so Kedahn comforts him with some consolation and a bit of a story.

“My mother always used to tell me about the stars and constellations, and their stories. Hundreds upon thousands upon millions of tiny white freckles dotted on a midnight sky, no matter how far away, all seemed so special. Once Deva left Fellenya to Locked Earth, did I realize that we are not much different than the stars. To think, there is an infinite number of universes that exist, it makes us feel so insignificant. But I know deep down, no matter how small we may seem, we all have our purpose.”

  • Softly sing the first verse of ‘Leaves Of Yggdrasil’ by Myrkur, as if you were singing someone to sleep, in your desired key. Alternatively, sing a lullaby of your choice, in the same fashion.

Where Sherwood And The Infinite Lullaby as a whole is still in the writing stage, there will more than likely be additional characters being added that will need voice actors. Not only that but for background characters and minor roles, extra voice actors are a big help.

I recommend you audition for this role whether you've auditioned for the characters above or not, you might miss out on the opportunity of voicing a new character for the series!

(A reminder to please reply with your Discord user tag if you see that you are accepted for this role.)

  • "And there you go. You heard her, Iri. Our Heroic Spirit over there considers a battlefield to be better than Hell. What a joke. A battlefield is Hell itself. There's no hope to be had on one. There is nothing but unspeakable despair. Just a soulless crime we call victory, paid for by the pain of the defeated. But humanity has never recognized this truth. And the reason is that, in every era, a dazzling hero has blinded the people with their legends, and kept them from seeing the evil of bloodshed they bring. True human nature has not advanced a step beyond the Stone Age."

    (Kiritsugu Emiya from the Fate/Zero)

  • "Memories...of the people we were. They're subtle but they're real. It took me a lot of time to understand what I saw... Books say we shouldn't have memories. Or at least they're only the memories and emotions of the alchemists who made us; that we see. But they're wrong...Those memories are mine."

    (Lust from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

  • Feel free to audition with your demo reel. If you don't have a demo reel already, choose either of the two monologues above, or find and recite a monologue or semi large line of your choosing.

Extra singers will be used for ensemble recordings, such as the one heard in the musical teaser. It's nice to have many for a variety of ranges in case we decide to specify the sections used in particular songs (soprano, alto, tenor, bass, etc.). Extra singers will also be used for solo pieces as well for background music or musical sequences.

If you are a singer of any range, I encourage you to audition for this role! Whether you auditioned for one of the singing roles above or not, there's always a use for extra singers.

  • Sing "All Is Found" from the Frozen 2 soundtrack in any key of your choice.

  • Feel free to submit your singing demo reel if you have one. If not, sing at least 16 bars of a song of your choosing.

It is very important to have a handful of active writers as Sherwood And The Infinite Lullaby enters the writing phase of Arc One. Many of the key events and ideas have already been conceptualized and thought out, but I need the help of various writers to apply them to a script.

I'm looking for writers who specialize in genres such as drama, fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and mostly everything in between (lyricists and/or songwriters are more than welcome to audition for this role as well).

Where Sherwood And The Infinite Lullaby's storyline and systems use music as a means of representation, and much of the soundtrack being a prominent feature within the series, a variety of music composers and producers is very useful to have onboard.

I'm looking for most genres of music, the majority will be modern orchestral, but there are plans for some more electronic, dance, or pop sounds as well. That being said, audition if you are interested in the project regardless of the genre you specialize in the most.

Sherwood And The Infinite Lullaby is a visual novel, thus the usage of still images is very prominent overall. Please specify how you would like to help out within your audition, such as concept art, background art, or character art. This will help us keep track of who's doing who, without the need of creating multiple roles. Please make sure you read through the description and see if you believe your art style would suit the series, as a whole it carries a dark and more serious tone.

It would help if you are capable of adapting to a certain art style when it comes to making the visuals coherent, but no worries if you believe you cannot.

Although Sherwood And The Infinite Lullaby is a visual novel, the usage of looped sprites and smaller animated sequences for things such as character introductions or important moments is highly probable. That being said, no more than around 20% of the episodes are anticipated to be animated, as the series focuses more on its music, voice acting, and still images, thus a visual novel.

It would help if you are capable of adapting to a certain art style when it comes to making the visuals coherent, but no worries if you believe you cannot.
