NOTE: No prior knowledge of the source material of RWBY required - all talents welcome to audition!

ABOUT REMNANTS

Some promotional videos from REMNANTS: [Main Trailer] - [Law For The Wolves] - [What is REMNANTS?] - [Main Cast Reveal]

REMNANTS is a fan project of Rooster Teeth and Monty Oum's RWBY, hosted on Switchback Channel, with a total of 5 videos accumulating over 180,000 views in the past month, and more videos to come. It is an Alternate Universe re-imagining of the world of Remnant and Team RWBY's journey, told through nonlinear videos containing detailed illustrations accompanied by music and voice acting, each new update offering a new glimpse into the lives of the cast that the viewer must piece together. The video format is similar to an illustrated audiobook or fandub comic.

The story of REMNANTS is set in a modern fantasy world and follows two generations of Hunters, Teams STRQ and Team RWBY, tasked with defending the remnants of the world from a race of monsters called the Grimm, as Team RWBY continues the fight against the darkness that Team STRQ failed to defeat. Team RWBY must unravel STRQ's past while at the same time tackling their own unique trials and forge their still uncertain friendship together.

All the artwork and video production will be done by myself, SYTOkun, along with a small team of voice actors and sound engineers. We communicate and share work updates through Discord. I've run a successful first round of auditions on Casting Call Club which concluded recently, found here.

This project is unpaid, and is purely a passion project. However I am intending to take this seriously and will be taking financial steps to better support my contributors and team members in the very near future. Please prioritise yourself and your time before considering joining, as I want you to have a smooth and enjoyable time working. I don't want anyone to inconvenience or drag themselves, as I wouldn't want to go through that working on this as well.

I am currently looking for musicians to compose instrumental backing for original songs written for the characters in the story, which are each sung by their respective voice actors, along with original background compositions for future videos - as well as sound engineers/VA talent to create the sounds for the monstrous Grimm. I'm also seeking general vocalists to stand in for voice actors unable or choose not to sing their character songs.

WORK ETHIC

Deadlines are soft for musicians, as I'm aware composing is a very time and work-intensive process. I can freely discuss with you what you are able to create to ensure a good compromise between quality befitting of work we'd all be proud of and realistic investment of time and effort, though anytime between a week to a month of receiving vocals to work with is best.

For voice actors and sound engineers, typically lines are expected within 1-2 weeks of receiving a final script for a video, though this is flexible according to your schedule.

QUALIFICATIONS (Musician)

You may apply as one person or as a group of people, however many people are in your team.

A familiarity with the genre of music is desired, which are detailed below.

Of course, it will be absurd of me to ask for professional grade music for free, so as long as one is able to understand the genres and essence of the music and able to replicate them or evoke a similar soundscape/emotion through either software like Garage Band, or through simple instrumentation like acoustic guitars and piano, that is already more than enough!

As such, you are obviously not expected to be qualified for all the genres listed. I just like being exhaustive with my references in order to best inform you of the ideal desired soundscape for the project and to hopefully stir some inspiration. Even if you mainly specialise in one genre or instrument, that is more than fine enough to start building the soundscape of the world and its characters from.

Think of it less as a shopping list of all the music you have to accomplish, and more like a catalogue of the soundscape where you find your skills can shine best.

MUSIC REFERENCE

The music used will largely reflect the soundtrack of the original RWBY this fan project is based on, though not a carbon copy. Generally the genre falls into rock, but will differ from song to song. Below are some examples for expected character songs, to which the lyrics and melody have already been completed - as well as planned character themes in the future.

Some musical influences for the soundtrack are the official RWBY soundtrack, the band Cold Kingdom, and the band LifeForce.

Here is a visual playlist based on the album The Moon And The Fool by Cold Kingdom, tying each song in the album to a specific image or character in the project.

Ruby and Main Theme

Reference aesthetics for Ruby here and here.

Ruby is the main protagonist of REMNANTS, a young and idealistic Hunter-in-training who must endure many trials and have her heart tested if she is to redeem the past that her predecessors failed to save. Her desire to become a Hunter is defined by the loss of her mother Summer, the greatest warrior of her generation who died protecting the city she loved. Ruby's music - and by extension the main theme of the project - have a more vanilla rock sound, but her main leitmotif revolves around the Spanish guitar. Examples here, here and here. Keywords: hunter, warrior, determination.

Weiss (example top - Heaven Created)

Reference aesthetics for Weiss here and here.

Weiss is the heiress to a cold legacy, and daughter to a cold and ruthless father, torn between the blood she was born to carry and the desires of her own heart - to dare believe she can be free to be her own person. In Weiss' character song above, her instrumentation and leitmotifs would largely revolve around more classical instruments such as the piano or violin. Examples from the official RWBY here and here. Keywords: loneliness, snow, princess.

Yang

Reference aesthetics for Yang here and here.

Yang is a delinquent character set to strike things out on her own, but is never fully unable to leave family behind. Her motifs have a decidedly hard rock and grungey sound. For reference: Let It Burn, Desire, Not Tonight and Devil In Me from Cold Kingdom. Keywords: rebellious, carefree, vengeful.

Blake and Adam

Reference aesthetics for Blake here.

Blake is a former rebel whose life was filled with hardship and bloodshed. Her songs lean towards rock, with elements of metal, and often involve duets with her partner and mentor Adam, whose once righteous cause turned into a thirst for vengeance, causing the two to become enemies. Their songs would have a combination of melancholic piano representing Blake, and violent electric guitars representing Adam. Music examples here and here. Keywords: emotional, outcast, conflict.

Cinder

Reference picture for Cinder here.

Cinder is someone who appears perfect on the surface, but whose cheerful face and clouded past conceals many dark childhood secrets. Her music has a clear storybook or music box influence, like a fairy tale gone horribly wrong. Her motifs give a feeling of bleakness and loss. Examples here, here and here (anything from LifeForce really). Keywords: Bleak, hollow, secrets, despair.

Qrow

Reference pictures for young Qrow here and here.

Qrow is a loner and veteran Hunter, haunted by the disappearances and deaths of his closest teammates and allies, with little else left to drive him but his loyalty to his remaining teammates and his desire to make sure his nieces don't follow the same path he and his allies once did. He acts as the main character Ruby's beloved uncle, mentor and watchful protector. Examples here and here. Keywords: wanderer, loss, regrets.

Summer

Reference pictures for Summer here, here and here.

Ruby's mother, who was lost in a great battle when the Grimm nearly overwhelmed the city where Summer's family lived, leaving her no choice but to go on a suicide mission to break the dark siege and leave the family she loved in the hopes of securing a better future for them. Her music has themes of lost love, regret and anguish over the things she could have done differently, and the fate that she had to choose. Examples here, here and here. Keywords: tragedy, lost love, responsibility.

Ambient Music/Vocals

Some miscellaneous genres/tracks for various themes and possible background compositions. This would include backgound vocals/singing as well.

The world beyond the safety of the cities, while rife with danger, also promises adventure and the secrets to the past - with a variation of music between adventurous, energetic and contemplative, with the goal of immersion into this great unknown. This would be the fantasy and traditional counterpart to the more modern rock music associated with the characters - showing the difference between the world they know and the world that lies beyond through sound.

One such reference would be the NieR series: [1] - [2] - [3]

Another influence is Celtic/traditional European music to depict the forests and wilderness beyond the cities where the main cast live: [Example] [Example] [Example-sierra Eagleson] [Example-Julie Fowlis] Even proficiency with a single instrument such as the flute or pan pipes would do wonders!

MONSTER SOUND REFERENCE

The Grimm are a mysterious race of monsters that are said to have descended from a shattered moon, and have ravaged the world, driving humanity to four remaining realms. Concept art and art for some Grimm: [1] - [2] - [3]

As a general rule, anything that sounds scary or cool is good to go. Compared to the original source material, REMNANTS is slightly darker in tone, and explores some more mature themes. As a fan of horror, i encourage you to feel free to take from all sources for the sounds of the monsters.

As there are many types of Grimm, and the sounds they would make are varied, from more animalistic sounds such as from wolves, big cats, reptiles and birds; to more humanoid monster sounds like ghostly wails and distorted screams.

Some sound reference: [1] - [2] - [3] - [4]

With all that said, best of luck to all applicants!
