Red Rain: Chapters 1-3 Reading

Red Rain: Chapters 1-3 Reading

Project Overview

NOTE: The official deadline is MAY JUNE 30th!

In a small town named Tempest, mysterious blood red rain begins pouring from the sky in the middle of the night. During the storm, a respected citizen of the town is murdered. Macie Evans, teenage daughter of the town's Chief of Police, lover of mysteries and the unexplained, is drawn to the unusual circumstances of the crime and the things she knows about the victim. Enlisting the help of her two best friends, Macie decides she's going to solve the murder and the red rain herself.

Red Rain is a YA Mystery novel featuring adventure, murder, mysterious phenomena, and hidden small town secrets. I’ve been writing it on and off for about 2 years, and I’d like to make an audio reading of the first 2 3 chapters. There’s a few reasons for doing this:

  • To get more experience for myself in directing, scriptwriting, and audio editing

  • To encourage myself to edit the story and explore new formats

  • To have some fun and see my characters come to life (which would also give me an idea of how natural the dialogue sounds)

I want this project to be something the VAs can have fun with, so feel free to try different readings of the lines and bring the characters to life in your own way! Right now, I’m only planning to make an audio version of the first 2 3 chapters, but may go further if there’s interest in the project from the actors and listeners. In that case, I’ll invite the casted VAs to do more, but there’s no commitment necessary aside from these 2 3 chapters, and there are many more characters who come in later in the story who would require future casting.

I’ve set up a Discord channel for anyone interested to join. Come here to chat, re-audition, and ask questions about the project!

Requirements:

  • You don’t need to have an amazing mic, but please at least avoid background noise that can’t be easily removed (ie. other people talking, TVs, dogs, doors, etc.) Better quality auditions are more likely to get casted, but it’s the acting and voice that matters the most.

  • There’s no age limitations, but do be aware that while this is a YA novel, there are themes such as murder that not everyone might be comfortable with. There are also LGBT+ themes, so please don’t audition if you’re uncomfortable with that.

  • You must have a discord, as while it’s optional to join while auditioning, casted members need to be in the chat, at least to see announcements.

  • You may re-audition as many times as you like, but please do so in the discord server! You can also audition for as many characters as you like, but there will likely be no double casting aside from extras.

If you’d like feedback, just ask and I’ll give you some through PM or Discord. Have fun auditioning! (Character pictures to come soon)

Latest Updates

  • BIG UPDATE

TLDR: ADDITIONAL CHAPTER AND NEW CHARACTERS ADDED, DEADLINE CHANGED TO JUNE 30TH After some editing and rewriting, I've decided to add another chapter onto the project. This will allow for more characters to be introduced, and leave off at a better point in the story. The addition of the chapter will allow for more important characters to be introduced, and leave off at a better point in the story. The new characters to audition for, Christa and Bella, are a part of the Tempest Times newspaper club, and play a fairly big role in the story as a whole, though since they're introduced in Chapter 3, they won't have the largest part in this recording. The deadline for auditions will be changed to June 30th, HOWEVER: I will likely begin to cast some of the initial characters after May 30th if I feel a voice is a perfect fit. Thanks so much for all the auditions so far, I've enjoyed listening to them and hearing the characters brought to life! As an additional update, I will be away and unable to listen to auditions/give feedback from May 13th to May 26th. I am still working on character art, and while I'd like to get more posted before my trip, the majority will come once I return. Thanks for reading!

Medium-range voice, not too high or low, but feel free to play around with it! The main character and narrator of the story; therefore, alongside her dialogue, Macie’s actor will also be reading the narration. The 17-year-old only child of the town’s Chief of Police, Macie is an adventurous girl who dreams of becoming a great investigative journalist, and is currently the editor in chief of her school’s unofficial newspaper, the Tempest Times. Macie is a sarcastic, witty girl with an abundance of curiosity and a love of the unexplained who tends to rush into things she finds interesting and drag her friends with her. She’s always ready and willing to fight. While she can be impulsive and stubborn, she’s smart and good at putting the pieces of a puzzle together. She changes a lot throughout the story, but in this first chapter, she’s the type of teenager who thinks she’s invincible and wants excitement in life. If you want to try some of her lines used for other characters’ auditions for fun, feel free!

  • The phone lit up with what was apparently the eighth call in a row. I clicked accept, and before the boy could say a single word, hissed with as much venom as I could muster in my half-awake state: “I swear to god, I am going to murder you if you don’t have a very good reason for waking me up two hours earlier than necessary.”

  • “Nice perception skills, Mr. Police Chief. You’re up pretty early yourself. What’s the deal? Cat caught in a tree? Tractor destroyed by the weird possibly-acid-blood rain?”

  • As I stepped outside, the chill of mid autumn hit me full force, sending a shiver up my spine. I pulled my parka tighter, zipping it up for the walk outside, and headed towards the corner. The scenery around me was filled with the colors of fall; crisp leaves tinged in orange and yellow lay scattered across the ground, trees steadily becoming bare, and from the previous night there were now blood red puddles pooling in the streets and sidewalk. I knelt down to look closer at one, peering at the still water, murky from being mixed with dirt and cement. What would it look like clear? I’d have to bottle some after school for testing, if Cain hadn’t already.

Medium-high voice, kind of nerdy, maybe a little whiny. Macie’s childhood best friend, a socially awkward, nerdy boy who loves aliens, conspiracy theories and the unexplained. Cain is an insomniac who practically lives off of coffee and energy drinks. He manages to stay cheerful and excitable, though when he crashes he crashes hard. He loves technology and tries to invent new gadgets and gizmos, which are often useless. He’s got a big crush on Ren, who he met through Macie and is now good friends with. He’s smart and caring, and has a big imagination which can sometimes lead him to jump to conclusions. He’s good at analyzing data and detail, but he lets himself be influenced by others pretty easily.

  • (excited, a bit defensive) “Wait-- oh, heck, I forgot the light’s out on your street, just-- shine a flashlight outside! I swear I’m not crazy!”

  • [MACIE: “If you start feeding us some birdbrained theories you found on reddit, I will kick you to mars so you can live happily with your aliens.”] “Unfortunately, I would likely asphyxiate before contact with any extraterrestrial life could be achieved. There’s probably no life on mars anyway, or at least no sentient lifeforms that would be capable of intelligent communication--”

  • (Explaining his research) “As you can see-- or, well, Ren kind of can’t I guess, but anyway-- the rain was a similar shade of red to the storm we experienced last night. Dust was ruled out in this case, as well, and you’ll never believed what actually turned out to be the cause.” [MACIE: “Are you trying to sound like a clickbait article?”] “Kind of. Um, anyway, it was discovered that the red rain in Kerala was caused by a meteorite that had crashed nearby earlier, and sent particles into the air apparently. And now, here’s the really interesting part...”

Medium-low voice, soft in tone. Ren is a quiet, kind-hearted, introspective boy who loves music and mystery. He enjoys running and is the sole photographer for the Tempest Times. He loves photography, and prefers to take pictures in black and white, mainly because he’s colorblind and gets self-conscious of how his colored photos might look to others. He moved to Tempest when he was 12 after his parents divorced and quickly became friends with Macie and Cain. He’s much more reserved than the other two, but he’s got the greatest common sense, and is the best at problem solving and compromising. He can be surprisingly witty when he’s comfortable, and he likes to tease his friends lightheartedly. He’s been dealing with a lot of internal conflict, particularly around his relationship with his mother and his uncertain sexuality.

  • (teasing) “Hey, you’re not the only one Cain woke up early. If Macie’s getting coffee, I want one too.”

  • “I already got some pictures this morning. I tried to take a few of the rain while it was pouring, but with the bad lighting and unprepared setup I didn’t get any good shots. There might be some that capture the color, but you’d be able to tell better than me.”

  • “I don’t see what’s strange. They just don’t want people messing around in a room with fragile and important documents, probably.”

Medium-low voice, largely up to interpretation, but at least a little fatherly in tone while speaking to Macie. Joseph is Tempest’s Chief of Police, and Macie’s single dad. His wife, who was also an officer, died while taking down an armed robber when Macie was 6. He’s very protective of his daughter, making her train in self defence since she was young, and he wants only the best for her. He tries to be the best father he can, but he can’t always be around for Macie while he’s on duty, and can get somewhat overbearing in his protectiveness. Joseph is strong and intelligent, and while he generally has a strong sense of morality, through the course of the story he struggles over either doing what he knows is the right thing for the town, or doing what will keep him and Macie safe, especially when Macie keeps putting herself in danger against his will. In these first chapters, he’s not too prominent, but still plays an important role.

  • (rushed, distracted)“There’s been an emergency. I have to head out ASAP, I don’t know all the details yet, I’ll tell you when I get home... Uh, what’s this about the rain? I think the dispatcher said something about it too, but ‘possibly-acid-blood...”

  • “I don’t have time for this; I need to get going. Jeez, what a morning... If I’m not back before school, have fun, do your best, and above all...” [MACIE: “Be myself. Stay safe, dad. Love you.”] “Love you too.”

Voice type up for interpretation, playful and energetic. Aaron is a classmate of Macie’s who she has a strange sort of friendship with. He seems to have boundless energy, and loves to joke around and play harmless pranks. Despite his energy, he’s a big procrastinator and hates doing things he actually has to, choosing to play games, watch anime, or browse internet memes instead during most of his free time. He loves talking to people and will flirt with practically anyone he meets. He falls in and out of love quickly, crushing intensely on a person for a short period of time before moving on to someone else. He doesn’t like having to get serious, but when he does he’s honest and resilient. He’s a bigger part of the story later in the book, but only has a few lines in these early chapters.

  • "Mornin’, Spacie Macie! What a weird morning, right? Like, holy shit, red rain!”

  • “Aw man, wish I’d been up! I swear I sleep through everything, even my alarm. In fact, I’m pretty sure alarms are useless. I’m immune. Soundproof.”

  • (whiny) “Ow! Not everyone is a kickboxer, y’know! I’m fragile!”

Violet Belrose

Medium high-medium low voice, slight sophisticated, upper class tone. The daughter of the richest man in Tempest, Victor Belrose. Violet is in the same grade as Macie, and while she was homeschooled until 9th grade she’s been friends with Macie since they were 10. Violet was sheltered and molded into the ideal of her father until she was able to go to public school, where she started rebelling, trying to become her own person rather than a doll of her father’s will. She’s spoiled, but she tries not to act like it, but has an air that’s sort of hard to approach, and she can come off as standoffish and brash until you get to know her. While she’s generally polite and proper in the presence of adults, she relaxes when she gets a chance to get away from her father’s expectations and be herself. She’s secretly dating Lucius, who’s considered a ‘bad boy’ type, and keeps talking about how she wants to run away with him and forget about her dad. Violet is one of Macie’s best informants, since she’s privy to gossip throughout the school and her father’s involvements. She has a big role throughout the story, but she’s only in one scene for these early chapters.

  • (serious, eager) “Macie, there you are. I have something important to tell you.”

  • “My father has been acting very strange. I mean, stranger than usual. He was muttering and pacing all morning, and the couple of intelligible words I managed to hear were... questionable.”

  • (sarcastic) “Ah yes, of course. I’m sure that would be a successful plan.”

Christa is a transgender girl, with a lower-range but feminine-sounding voice that’s otherwise up for interpretation. Hispanic accent is highly encouraged! A writer and graphic designer for the school newspaper club, Christa is a spiritual girl with a generally calm, cheerful disposition but a sharp, witty tongue and good sense of humor. She’s the primary translator for her cousin Angel’s sign language (who is mute, and therefore won’t have a voice actor) and is quite protective of him, though he often gets annoyed when doted on.

  • “We have the red rain, of course-- that looks like it’s going to be our feature article, front page. Unless something bigger happens, which seems rather unlikely.”

  • (Reading Angel’s notebook) “You know I can’t read your handwriting too well... Ah, that’s certainly something. Looks like Angel overheard some interesting rumors about Mr. Epson.”

Medium high-high voice, sweet and a bit nervous. Bella is a kind, shy girl in the newspaper club who loves cute things and baby animals. She gets very anxious under stress and pressure and tends to withdraw when anything gets too loud or dark, but when she’s happy she’s upbeat and talkative. She runs the Tempest Times’ advertising section and social media sites. Bella has a huge puppy-love crush on her best friend Rosie, who’s one of her favorite conversation topics.

  • “Mrs. Limbrough’s dog had puppies, and they’re going to be up for adoption as soon as they’re big enough, all 5 of them!”

  • (nervous) “What do you think is going on...? I-is something bad happening?”

Any voice type, not too high pitched. A substitute teacher at the middle/high school in Tempest, filling in for Macie’s homeroom/chemistry teacher, Mr. Epson. She likes romance novels and the sound of crackling fire. Only has a few lines.

  • “I’m afraid I don’t know what’s going on with Mr. Epson; I was called in last minute. I’m sure he’s fine, but since there wasn’t any work left for you guys, we’ll be having a free period today. Any objections?”

While extra roles can be filled by myself and members of the cast, I figured I’d open up a role in case anyone wants to contribute! The extras for the first 2 chapters are mainly just students in the school. Some do have slightly larger parts later on, but for the purpose of this casting call, they’ll only be marked as extras. Feel free to read just one line, two, or all three, and with any type of voice you like as long as it sounds relatively teen-ish! You can also improvise some extra lines if you’d like.

  • “Hi, Miss Burr! Is Mr. Epson sick?”

  • “Did you see the rain? It was so weird!”

  • “I missed it, but I’m tired enough as it is. I only got like 5 hours sleep cause I had to cram for my math test, ugh.”
