Medium-range voice, not too high or low, but feel free to play around with it! The main character and narrator of the story; therefore, alongside her dialogue, Macie’s actor will also be reading the narration. The 17-year-old only child of the town’s Chief of Police, Macie is an adventurous girl who dreams of becoming a great investigative journalist, and is currently the editor in chief of her school’s unofficial newspaper, the Tempest Times. Macie is a sarcastic, witty girl with an abundance of curiosity and a love of the unexplained who tends to rush into things she finds interesting and drag her friends with her. She’s always ready and willing to fight. While she can be impulsive and stubborn, she’s smart and good at putting the pieces of a puzzle together. She changes a lot throughout the story, but in this first chapter, she’s the type of teenager who thinks she’s invincible and wants excitement in life. If you want to try some of her lines used for other characters’ auditions for fun, feel free!

  • The phone lit up with what was apparently the eighth call in a row. I clicked accept, and before the boy could say a single word, hissed with as much venom as I could muster in my half-awake state: “I swear to god, I am going to murder you if you don’t have a very good reason for waking me up two hours earlier than necessary.”

  • “Nice perception skills, Mr. Police Chief. You’re up pretty early yourself. What’s the deal? Cat caught in a tree? Tractor destroyed by the weird possibly-acid-blood rain?”

  • As I stepped outside, the chill of mid autumn hit me full force, sending a shiver up my spine. I pulled my parka tighter, zipping it up for the walk outside, and headed towards the corner. The scenery around me was filled with the colors of fall; crisp leaves tinged in orange and yellow lay scattered across the ground, trees steadily becoming bare, and from the previous night there were now blood red puddles pooling in the streets and sidewalk. I knelt down to look closer at one, peering at the still water, murky from being mixed with dirt and cement. What would it look like clear? I’d have to bottle some after school for testing, if Cain hadn’t already.
