Project Saikou (Bakuman Anime Fandub)

Project Saikou (Bakuman Anime Fandub)

Project Overview

(This is a casting call for the main roles! A casting call for side roles and extras will be posted soon. As well as that, any roles that may have been unlisted will get a specified casting call as well.)

Greetings and salutations fellow voice actors! Don't scroll all the way to the roles just yet, it's important you read the description!

My name is 04deoxys, and I co-host with three others on a video platform found on YouTube called "The Scent", and I'm a big fan of the anime series Bakuman! For the longest time, I've always wanted to make a full-fledged fandub of the entire series, and I believe today is the day I finally start getting some voice actors.

In the past, I've worked on other voice acting projects. My biggest accomplishment that sadly ended was a Tokyo Ghoul fandub before Funimation released an official dub. We made good progress, and had an incredible time working with one another. I'm familiar with editing and script writing. since I've done work on my own YouTube channel and other channels as well.

Q&A:

"How do you know Bakuman will not be getting an official English dub soon?"

Bakuman was released way back in 2010. We are currently in the year 2019. and the only discussion found in regards to a dub was found on Reddit back in 2014. Unfortunately, the anime has been forgotten by most people and will likely stay that way due to the popularity of other currently airing shows.

"Aren't you concerned about copyright infringements by the creators?"

As far as everyone knows, media blasters lost the licensing to the show once the company shutdown. I believe Viz Media bought the rights to post the manga on their website, but that's about it. It's currently unknown if Viz bought the rights to the only dubbed 7 episodes of the series. If copyright infringements do become a concern, we'll worry about that once we get there.

"Isn't Bakuman like, three seasons long?"

Yep.

And we're dubbing them all.

"What are the requirements to participate?"

I'm hoping for this project to have some quality to it. In order to participate, you must have the following:

1.) A good microphone

As long as you're confident your microphone will have no background noise, you should be fine. It takes time out of the editing process to enhance a voice actors audio, so please be sure we don't have to do too much work on your takes. No auditions will be accepted with audible background noise, hissing, or echoes.

     2.) Hard work and dedication

I'm going to be working as hard as I can on this project on-top of my other daily activities. I'm not going to rag on people about deadlines or anything like that, I'm very easy to work with. However, you do need to have some work ethic in you and you need to put time into the project depending on your role. Please understand, this is more than just a knock off fandub, this is serious work.

3.) DISCORD.

If you get approved for you're role, great! We'll send you a link to a Discord where you can contact us directly if you have any questions. Server may be setup by the time everything is finished.

If you have these three requirements, you should have no problem applying for voice acting.

With all that said, I invite you guys to audition and try your absolute hardest! Once you've been approved, I'll be sure to message you the necessary details in order to get started. If any of you have any other questions you'd like to ask, don't be scared to message me. I hope to work with you in the future, here's to the Bakuman Fandub, code-named "Project Saikou"!

Latest Updates

  • Casting members soon!

For those curious about the Bakuman Dub, don't worry, it's still in production. It's been a hectic week for me and being sick in bed doesn't help either haha. I'm primarily the main member overseeing this project, so if I'm out of commission; the project will also unfortunately be out of commission. Don't worry though! I'm (hopefully) getting better at a steady pace, and I've listened to most of the auditions. I'm getting a second opinion from everyone, so at the very least castings should occur relatively soon. If you would still like to try and get an audition in, the casting call is still technically open. Thank you for understanding, and if there any questions don't hesitate to ask. Thank you (:
  • Update #3

Hello everyone, here again with update #3. As previously mentioned, we've had issues with YouTube's copyright system automatically striking our videos. We think we've found an alternative solution that will not be posted onto YouTube, but will not be posted on video sites such as Vimeo or Dailymotion. Stay tuned as more information will be provided hopefully soon! As previously mentioned as well, a new role as been added into the casting call! Aiko Iwase has a small role in season 1, but a much larger one in season 2. If you get that role, much like Miura, you will be getting more lines once we reach that point. Thanks again for all of your auditions, hope to be working with you in the future!
  • Update #2

Hey everyone, back again with update #2. First of all, thanks again for all the auditions; you all are trying your best and I can see that. There's plenty of opportunity in season 2 and extras to get your voice out there, so keep on trying! Right now we're editing episodes to hopefully release quicker once we get all of our lines. We've had issues with YouTube's automatic copyright system and may have to post the episodes on a different platform. We'll keep you informed, in the mean time continue to do everything normally! Also, a couple roles may be added soon. Stay tuned!
  • Update #1

Hey guys! First update in hopefully many explaining progression for the series and any general stuff I may have forgotten to add. Speaking of which... This Casting Call was done very late at night, so I'm thoroughly re-checking everything to make sure it's okay. I've noticed some errors, and I'm pointing them out now before any more auditions come in. -I've changed both Mashiro's and Takagi's third line with something that requires more yelling. Not only will this check if your microphone is up to par with this series, it'll show how much emotion you'll be putting into the role. -This is the same for some other roles, but I put a disclaimed in the bio that the role may require some yelling, as well as in the main description. Please keep this in mind when auditioning! Thank you for the so far four auditions, and apologies in advance for not noticing this mistake any earlier. Good luck voice actors!

(This character will be significantly more relevant to the plot in Season 2)

Miura has a very easygoing personality, but is very adamant about gag manga. This is shown as he is always pushing for more comedy in Ashirogi's manga. He tries to do the best for his manga creators, though he is still young, and is one of the most inexperienced of the Jump editors.

  • Hi, I'm Miura. I just started working in the editorial office at Jump last year. Nice to meet you!

  • I can't believe you're Taro's nephew, that's so cool! Now I'm even more sure you're really going places!

  • angry Either you make an effort to change your art style, or Takagi has somebody else do the artwork for him!

(This character plays a larger role in season 2, but a voice is needed for an episode in season 1). Iwase is an academic achiever in school. She's difficult to get along with anyone due to her strict and high-standard nature; she leads a rather lonely life. However, it doesn't bother her as she's always focused in studies. In her world, she only respects people that rivals her ranking in school. However, she would focus the latter of her life in attempts to out match Akito Takagi

  • Please stop writing manga. I know you're going to regret this for the rest of your life, Takagi.

  • I'm going to start writing manga to! I don't want to lose to you...I want to stand shoulder to shoulder!

Role assigned to: Nateb64

Moritaka Mashiro was once content in following the usual life of a Japanese citizen by attending a university and becoming an office worker, however he is inspired to become a manga artist like his late uncle. He has a crush on his classmate Miho Azuki that he ends up making a promise to marry her after both of them achieve their dreams. He teams up with Akito Takagi to create a manga that is worthy to be adapted into an anime.

Be prepared to do some yelling for this role.

  • Huh? N-no way! We haven't even talked yet! And first of all, what makes you think that?

  • S-so if our manga turns into an anime, we'll reserve a heroine role for you or something...S-so if that dream comes true, please marry me!

  • [Excited] YES!! WE DID IT! I can't believe our manga is going to be in Akamaru...!!

Takagi was also the one who first found out about Mashiro Moritaka's manga drawing talent, he was the one who proposed the idea of Mashiro teaming up with him to draw manga. Like Mashiro, Takagi strives to be the best he can be. He also suggests they should all go to the same schools as Mashiro just so they can write manga together.

Be prepared to do some yelling for this role.

  • Don't make such a serious face! This isn't the Death Note...

  • Work with me, and become a manga artist! I've loved manga ever since I was a kid, and I've always dreamed of becoming an artist. I've considered many others, but I need your art!

  • [excited] YES!! WE DID IT! Shit, I've never been happier in my life...!!

Role assigned to: krysdolly

Miho is a shy girl with the ambition to become a successful seiyu (voice actress). While her reasons and motivations to become a seiyu are unclear, it was an ambition that was reinforced by the ambitions of Ashirogi Muto. Both she and Moritaka Mashiro fell in love with each other at a very young age. Although they both had mutual feelings for each other, they're also mutually very shy and embarrassed in the matters of love. It wasn't until Moritaka was encouraged by Takagi to announce their publishing ambitions to Miho that he accidentally blurted out his desire to marry her if they become successful. Although shocked at first, she happily agreed to his proposal: they'll get married when she becomes the leading seiyu in his manga that will become animated.

  • I'm so happy! I'll work hard. I'll become a voice actress and appear in your anime. How wonderful!

  • I understand. I promise. But only if the dream comes true. Until then, I won't see you again. Until the dream comes true we have to work hard with no distractions. Until then we'll just encourage each one another through mail or something.

Kaya is loud, rather childish, and seems to get on the nerves of quite a few people but all the while she is still very kind, and supportive of Takagi and Mashiro in their dreams. She often helps out with the tones and inking, working as a sort of assistant. She has joked about Mashiro paying her, but when he took her seriously, she quickly shook her head and said that she was joking. Miyoshi helps out in inking the manga and generally maintaining a positive atmosphere in the studio. Mashiro and Takagi find that her optimistic presence in the studio helps cheer up what is otherwise very stressful working environment and feel she is part of the "team."

Be prepared to do some yelling for this role.

  • Ugghh, tests are such a downer. Yesterday, I just gave up and fell asleep!

  • ARGH! The answer would probably make me want to kick you again, wouldn't it?!

  • I’m jealous of you guys, I want a dream too. I’m sick of martial arts, I want something more feminine. But unlike you guys...I haven’t got anything going for me…

Role assigned to: thezackattack

Nobuhiro Mashiro is Moritaka Mashiro's late uncle whose pen name was Kawaguchi Taro. He is the reason Mashiro knows so much about manga. He loved Azuki Miho's mother, Miyuki Haruno from afar. He wrote letters to her but could never tell her he loved her until he felt successful enough to do it. He is a scruffy looking man, with his hair held in a loose ponytail, and a bit of stubble. He wears round glasses and often holds a cigarette. He is rather uncaring of his appearance, often being seen in a t-shirt and shorts while in his studio. He has a very laid-back personality when around others.

  • I guess I gambled on love and lost. But she's the reason I was able to work as hard as I did, and it's because I feel like she's out there somewhere watching me that I keep drawing.

  • I'm still just a gambler. I became a manga artist because I wanted to get girls. I figured if I was rich and famous, I'd get girls. (smirk) don't tell anyone though.

  • Yeah, no one would do that sort of thing now. No one else did back then, either. Then we both graduated and she started working for a good company and I went on to university.

Role assigned to: themightymic

Niizuma is slightly naive, but can also be serious and calculating when he wants to. Eiji tends to act conceited because he is hailed as a genius; however, after working on Crow for quite a long time, he grew more humble, even claiming to not be "good enough of a Mangaka to be judging other people's work" when asked by his editor to judge for Jump's monthly award. (He judges anyway, but is not very helpful, only expressing his interest in Ashirogi and Ryu Shizuka). Niizuma shows great respect for his fellow authors, calling them sensei regardless of age. He loves manga, considering his job fun and reading every comic in Jump. He despises sleeping, but does so when needed. However, with how long he can stay awake, he will be out for a long time. His earliest assistant, Nakai, said Niizuma usually slept for 20 hours.

This character requires a lot of emotion and yelling, please keep that in mind. Example video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcRfcWtOsZ8)

  • If I become the number one author in Weekly Shonen Jack, please give me permission to end one series that I dislike.

  • CROW! Shping! Swwwwish!!

Role assigned to: Weav

Hattori is often portrayed as one of the calmer and more calculating editors in the series. He comes across as a very wise and experienced editor which leaves him raising his voice only when he sees it absolutely necessary to do so. He is very fond of Takagi and Mashiro and continues to be interested in their progression as mangakas, offering off-hand advice to Miura when he can.

  • Hello, this is Shounen Jack's editorial department.

Is this your first time submitting something?

Is that so? Then could you give me your name and phone number?

I'm Hattori from the weekly Shounen Jack. It's a pleasure to meet you. Well, to start with, may I see your manuscript?

  • *Chuckle* You don't need to be so uptight.

Well, I'll give you my opinion on the story first, okay?

As a whole, it's a well-put together sci-fi story, and I think a lot of people would be drawn into it.

But, this is more a novel than it is a manga. There's just way too much narration. Unless your story develops through characters and art, it will never be a manga.

Role assigned to: FalseProof

Yujiro hardly argues with Jump's policies and its then-top mangaka Niizuma, and often enforces both. He often appears as a background character, reiterating thoughts on certain aspects as well as giving other editors suggestions.

  • The noise is probably disturbing the neighbors...he probably can't even hear the doorbell.

  • NIZUMA! TURN DOWN THE MUSIC! (sigh) I know the timings bad, but can you do a 50 page one-shot for us?

  • If they beat Eiji, that'll affect his serialization...damn it! It's okay, the real deal will be in his favor. There's no way Niizuma is gonna lose.

Role assigned to: that_one_axel

Hisashi Sasaki was formerly the Editor-in-Chief at Weekly Shōnen Jump before he was transferred over and became the Editor-in-Chief of the newly created monthly manga magazine Hissho Jump. He wears professional clothing, unlike the other editors who wear casual clothing in the office, showing that he may believe that clothing reflects how one thinks. He is very stern and has a professional attitude towards criticizing manga artists'.

  • Wha--?! What is this kid talking about...?! The fact that he gave in so easily shows he's still a child...or was he testing me...?

  • If you still want that once you've seen for yourself how difficult it is to be a pro and have become Jump's main attraction, ask me again then.

  • A manga has to be interesting. If it's interesting, of course it will get serialized. But, this isn't interesting. You're a long way from serialization at your level.

Role assigned to: Ocelot_45

Shinta Fukuda is a main supporting character. He is a fellow mangaka and the founder of Team Fukuda. He left home after high school. Fukuda is rash, and often seems fueled by his emotional swings. He's very competitive, and enjoys the competition between him, Ashirogi, Eiji, and Aoki. He is also rather conceited, but at the end of the day is a very good friend (and rival).

Be prepared to do some yelling for this role.

  • Nizuma, you're not professional enough. If you want to draw something for your own enjoyment, do a Dojinshi. But if you're gonna be in jump, you have to put the audiences enjoyment first.

  • What?! You aren't taking this seriously! And you mean Yujiro's really letting you draw this without doing a storyboard?!

  • An editor who doesn't do meetings, and an author who doesn't do storyboards...this is ridiculous...

When she is first introduced, Aoki is presented as extremely haughty, judgmental, and dogmatic, similar to the later fully introduced Aiko Iwase, but as the story progresses, she undergoes enough character development to overcome her initial attitude (revealed to be caused by a distrust of men) and show a more tender, kinder, and more agreeable character.

  • I think my manga is the best out of all of ours, so I prefer not to comment on anyone's work. If you want to continue, do it amongst the rest of you.

  • I'm sorry, it's not your drawing's, it's me...I didn't want to admit it, so I blamed you. I'll write something worthy of your drawings.

  • Y-You're acting weird! I take it back! I just meant I didn't want you to catch a cold if you're going to be my partner!

Takuro Nakai is a Mangaka under Shueisha. For the latter of his career, he maintained a living as a assistant to other Mangakas. Nakai is a gifted, but desperate and lonely middled-aged (33 years old when first introduced) manga assistant. For many years, he wanted to become an accomplished mangaka and he dreamed of working on a successful manga series. Unfortunately, he never acted upon his ambitions until experiencing the fiery passions of Muto Ashirogi. No longer able to stand by and see younger mangakas succeed him, he mustered his strength to focus on getting published and directly compete with his mangaka peers.

  • Yeah, I can draw any location or place from any angle without a reference, and no one's faster than me with inking, tones, or effect.

  • I'm gonna get serialized too. I won't just settle for being an assistant. I swear I'll make it happen!

  • ...Yeah, you're right...but I'm not down, I'm relieved. I'm so happy that I'll finally be able to compete with you and ashirogi. Thank you, Niizuma, Fukuda...it's all thanks to you guys..
