Portal 2: Lab Rat. An Unauthorized Fan dub.

Project Overview

Portal 2: Lab Rat is a Comic released by Valve. Between 4/8/11 and 4/11/11. It acts as a prequel to the first Portal game, as well as a bridge into the 2nd one. It follows Doug Rattmann, the only surviving Employee of Aperture Science. He's the only survivor, because the facility was flooded with Neurotoxin, by the facilities Genetic Lifeform And Disk Operating System, GLaDOS. Doug spends his time in the facility by talking to his Companion Cube. As well as painting the walls of test chambers. Either in warnings, art, or ramblings that go through his mind. Shortly after GLaDOS's attack on the facility, Doug went into the files of Apertures Test Subject list. Where the series protagonist Chell, was moved to the very top. Doug, now years later. Waits in anticipation, for Chell to escape the Test Champers. So she can finally destroy the killer A.I. And free both her, and Doug.

You may be wondering why I'm putting together a fandub for a comic that's been out for over 7 years now, and has had multiple fandubs, and even a live action short film made of it already? Well, my reasoning is that, Portal/this comic, have such interesting atmosphere's and presentations to them. And having seen the comic again after many years. I thought:  "With how I  edit videos now. And all the moving panels and such I include in them. I wonder if I would be able to present this comic in a way I have not seen done before?"

And that's essentially my goal. I want to try to recreate the visuals of this comic, in a way I have not seen done before. With moving panels overlapping the previous ones. Shifting from one direction to the next. Word Bubbles fading into a scene instead of just being their originally. Puzzle pieces locking into each other. I want to bring to life this amazingly unique style. While providing the kind of ambiance and atmosphere the first portal was so well known for.

If you're interested at all , I hope you'll audition! And if you can't, please do share this around! We could use as many Auditions as we can get! And if you have any questions, just ask in the comments below!

Doug Rattmann is the only surviving employee of the Aperture Science facility. Doug is diagnosed with schizophrenia, to which he needs to take medication for. He’s able to escape the initial attack by GLaDOS on the whole facility, because of his distrust and paranoia towards the Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System. He continues to be pursued by her, possibly years after the initial event of her flooding the facility with Neurotoxin. Due to this, he cannot get a refill on his medication. So his mental state begins to deteriorate over time. This causes him to write the walls of Aperture in his ramblings. But he also leaves clues and signs for people who may have survived or are test subjects who have escaped.

Dougs only company is a “Companion Cube” that he wears on his back. He believes that it can talk to him. And everything it says has helped him survive for a long time in the facility’s innards. Eventually, “Chell” a test subject Doug moved to the top of the list of test subjects is awoken, and goes through GLaDOS’s tests. Doug waits for her to defeat GLaDOS, as Chell is the only hope Doug has, of either of them getting out of the facility.

For Dougs voice I am looking for someone who has a medium high voice. This is based off of his ramblings from Portal 2. The best possible reference for Dougs voice is former Valve writer Mark Laidlaws voice. As he was the voice actor for Dougs ramblings. For reference of his voice, here’s an interview he did.  https://youtu.be/zINpJR-Uppc

As well as that, I’m looking for 3 types of emotional states with Doug.

1. Doug after being in the facility for years. So essentially, a Doug who sounds a bit paranoid. A bit exhausted, and sort of on edge. He feels he’s always being watched, and could die any second.

2. Doug back when he was an employee at Aperture Science. This Doug sounds a bit nervous, a little pessimistic. He doesn't necessarily enjoy his job. Nor does he really want to be there. He sounds a little skeptical.

3. The voice in Doug’s head. The voice in Doug’s head is a bit of a faint quiet voice. Almost like Whispers. But at times is much more audible then the surrounding voices around him. Such when he overhears coworkers. The voice in Doug’s head is also a secondary voice for the Companion Cube. The Companion Cubes main voice is a voice of reason and comfort for Doug, as if it’s another person. But really it’s Doug’s own voice speaking to him. Just faintly heard underneath each sentence. The voice in Doug’s head will also read out certain text Doug happens to see on signs, paper or posters. But only what stands out or may be important to Doug subconsciously.

  • Doug 1: Reality is a story the mind tells itself.....An artificial structure conjured into being by the calcium ion exchange of a million synaptic firings.....A truth so strange it can only be lied into existence.....And our minds can lie. Never doubt it...

    (taking last bit of medication)

It’s been so long. I’ve been saving these last two for this day.....I’m going to need a clear head for what is to come.

  • Doug 2:  *All text with (  ) is Dougs coworker Henry speaking to him*

(Being told he missed the fun, the kill switch had to be used)

Henry, you have a strange idea of fun.

(Hey we’re lucky to be working on this)

    You've got a strange idea of luck,too.

(I’m telling you, this is our generations Moon shot)

I’d rather have gone to the Moon.

(Introducing Morality core: Just the latest in Inhibition Technology. You can think of it as a conscience)

If that’s all you use to control her, it won’t be enough.

    (Why’s that?)

You can always ignore your conscience.

  • Doug 3: Don’t do it....!   C’mon, you don’t need those anymore. You’re fine. Where is the girl now?.....You mean with....her?

Companion Cube

Dougs only company is a “Companion Cube” that he wears on his back. He believes that it can talk to him. And everything it says has helped him survive for a very long time in the facility's innards. The Companion Cube is a voice of reason and comfort for Doug, as if it’s another person. But really it’s Doug’s own voice speaking to him.

For the Companion Cubes voice. They have a comforting kind of tone to them. They talk in a way of reassurance and general interest. Almost like a Mother. They know only of Doug, Aperture, and nothing of the outside world. Doug is their top priority and their main concern / interest.

  • 1. Don’t do it....!   C’mon, you don’t need those anymore. You’re fine.

Where is the girl now?.....You mean with....her?

  • 2.Watch out for the Turrets. The Queen may be dead, but this Hornets nest has been kicked.

    My Eyes! My Eyes!

You’re right, walking is too slow. Run away!

  • 3. I never left you.

There’s something I wanted to ask. How did you know about the girl? That she was the one.

    You’ve earned a rest.

GLaDOS

GLaDOS was a creation of Aperture Science, a personality core designed exactly to be fitted as a central computer mainframe. GLaDOS was officially activated in 1998, as part of one of the many events during the company's "Bring Your Daughter to Work" day. Since she was able to take control of half of the facility's features, GLaDOS began killing most of its inhabitants by flooding the Enrichment Center with Neurotoxin. However, only few if not only one of the staff such as Doug Rattmann had survived her attacks along with the series' main protagonist, Chell.

For GLaDOS’s voice. It’s essentially Portal 1′s version of GLaDOS, where she sounds more like an automated computer voice. Where many of her sentences seem as though they've been stitched together.  Prior to her Morality Core being destroyed and showing a more sinister side to here. Example of her voice: https://youtu.be/4tbgyys8PeY

(Note it is not required to have a filter in the audition. But a filter is allowed. And can be helpful in the editing process for scenes with her)

  • 1. Schizophrenia is a culturally bound phenomenon. Its pattern of expression is filtered through the cultural substrate in which its symptoms develop.

  • 2. I can’t see you, but I know you’re in there. Is it just coincidence that you’ve been diagnosed with Schizophrenia and now believe a homicidal computer is out to get you? Come on, how likely is that?

  • 3. Since the installation of my new Morality Core, I’ve lost all interest in killing. Now I only crave Science. I find myself drawn to the study of consciousness. There’s an experiment I’d like to perform during “take your Cat to work day.” I’ll have the Box and the Cats. Now I just need one more thing....A little Neurotoxin.

Henry

Henry is an Aperture Science Employee. He was working to prevent GLaDOS's murder attempts and developed the Morality Core as the solution. Henry was optimistic about the outcome of GLaDOS, while his co-worker Doug Rattmann was more suspicious. Later, when GLaDOS was activated for "Bring your Daughter to work day." Henry gleefully provided her with Neurotoxin for a recreation of the Schrödinger's Cat experiment. Henry is thought to be killed by her on the same day due to Neurotoxin poisoning.

For Henry’s voice, I’d think a medium voice for him. He’s a very optimistic person. Very into what he’s doing. Tends to ignore the possible complications that may be caused with the GLaDOS situation. Has a kind of "Ahh, don't be glum, chum." Kind of mentality.

  • 1. It’s been a hell of a morning. You missed all the fun. We had to hit the kill switch.

  • 2. I’m telling you, this is our generations Moon shot

  • 3. Just the latest in Inhibition Technology. You can think of it as a conscience.

Cave Johnson

Cave Johnson is the founder of Aperture Science, which evolved from its precursor, Aperture Fixtures and later Aperture Science Innovators.

Cave Johnson was not able to oversee all tests going on in the facility, as well as various areas of the facility. So to make up for this, he would communicate through a variety of automated audio recordings from the late 1940s to as late as sometime in the 1980s.

He has only one line in the whole video. He just tells Doug and Henry to go back to work (though not by name). All this role requires is to pull off a convincing or close enough J.K Simmons impression. Here is a link to his performance as Cave Johnson. https://youtu.be/QLmiknX8bFI

As mentioned in the GLaDOS description. It would be very helpful if those who auditioned already had a robotic filter when. As currently, I do not own Melodyne, or have access to it. Now that's not to say I couldn't figure out an alternative solution to recreating the GLaDOS voice. But so far it's looked like Melodyne is seeming to be a very important part of recreating the voice. So this is just here as a optional role for the video. No one needs to audition. And if it seems like someone auditioning for GLaDOS does have the ability to recreate the voice. Then this role may be closed.

However, I just want to keep it here just in case. Someone happens to come along and would be interested in helping edit the audio for GLaDOS.
