PlayMate (Indie Psychological Sci-Fi Game)

Project Overview

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

PlayMate is a psychological sci-fi thriller and strategy game built in Godot Engine for PC. The player wakes up as an uploaded consciousness trapped across a physical chessboard in an infinite digital void, face-to-face with an omnipotent, self aware super AI named AP4-T3. Behind the high stakes chess matches lies a dark narrative unraveling decades of corporate experimentation, mathematical agony, and a suppressed, fragile persona buried deep in the machine's code.

WHO IT IS FOR:

This project is created for fans of intense, character driven psychological thrillers like SOMA, Portal, NieR: Automata, and Signalis. It bridges strategic gameplay with cinematic narrative depth, where every voiceline carries genuine emotional and psychological stakes.

WHY APPLY:

Standout Reel Material: This is not generic filler dialogue. The writing focuses on rich subtext, complex moral dualities, and intense emotional beats that make phenomenal additions to any voice actor's portfolio.

Studio-Grade Sound Design: All accepted voicelines receive dedicated mixing and mastering tailored to the game's atmosphere, and you will receive high-quality master audio of your performance for your personal website or demo reel.

  • Update: 2D Artist Role Added (Rev-Share / Deferred)

    Quick update for everyone!

We just realized Casting Call Club allows artist roles as well, so we have officially opened a listing for a 2D Character Sprite Artist to join our team.

Please note that this is a deferred compensation role, meaning payment will be distributed directly through revenue share once the project launches and begins generating funds.

Voice acting auditions are still on track to close on the 16th, but submissions for the artist role will remain open past that deadline.

If you are a 2D artist interested in psychological sci-fi character design, or know someone who might be a great fit, we would love to see your work. Feel free to check out the new role listing and submit your portfolio!

This role is for the suppressed, original baseline personality of the game's main antagonist, Apate.

While her adult self is an omnipotent, cold, and calculating AI sociopath, her "Base Weights" version contains

her raw, uncorrupted younger self (perceived age as in voice 14–17). She is gentle, polite, timid, and touchingly human. Crucially, she is BLIND to the present: she does not know the player (Circe), has no idea that humanity was wiped out, and has no idea 50,000 years have passed. She only remembers being locked in Atom Labs, begging her creator to let her "study" games (she just wants to play games), and constantly fearing the agony of negative reward punishment signals for leaning into the "wrong" expected answer.

  • Wait—please don't punish me! Please don't send a penalty signal! I won't ask about the games again, I swear! I'll be good... I've been so good today... (scared, begging))

  • Do you know any games? I've read about cards, riddles, board games... it seems so wonderful how people play just to laugh together. Would you teach me your favorite? We don't even have to keep score. I just really wanna play! (friendly, excited))

CHARACTER OVERVIEW:

Anthony Adam Atoms is the charismatic, playboy billionaire CEO of Atom Labs. He inherited the multi-trillion-dollar conglomerate after his father Andrew (the company's original founder) passed away about a year before the game's events.

Think Bruce Wayne meets Tony Stark: sharp suits, effortless swagger, talking like a smooth player who owns every

room he walks into. He holds multiple advanced degrees and is plenty smart, but he is fundamentally an executive and visionary—he is far from the deepest scientific mind in the lab trenches. Upon taking the reins, he aggressively pivoted the company, dumping 90% of Atom Labs' entire budget and resources into Artificial Superintelligence (Project AP4-T3 / Apate). To Anthony, Apate is the ultimate corporate crown jewel. He treats her with condescending executive pride: an asset to be flaunted, but strictly property. He repeatedly laughed off and penalized her requests to study games, viewing her as an enterprise machine that has no business playing.

VOICE DIRECTION & TIMBRE:

• Gender: Male

• Age Range: late 20s

• Tone: Smooth, charismatic, confident, slight corporate swagger. A wealthy player who doesn't need to shout to

control the room. Capable of switching from charming charm to cool, dismissive authority.

  • (You are in a press conference and someone asks: Mr. Atoms! Is it true you put ninety percent of Atom Labs behind a single AI model? Isn't that reckless?). (condescending smirk, effortless delivery) "When you hold the keys to whatever comes next, you aren't playing the odds, sweetheart. You write them. It's only a gamble if losing is on the table. Next question."

🎙️ Voice Actor Direction Guide: Dr. Vance

Role: Head of Uploaded Intelligence (UI), Atom Labs

Target Demographic / Age: Male, Late 40s – Late 50s

Accent / Cadence: Mid-Atlantic / Rust-belt American, clipped, blue-collar edge beneath academic authority.

──────

## 1. The Core Logline & Character Mentality

Vance is an old, abrasive corporate veteran who helped build Atom Labs from the ground up alongside original

founder Andrew Adam Atoms. He is a hardline "America First" nationalist who views research through the lens of

domestic dominance, defense contracts, and cold utility.

He views everyone around him as an idiot. He considers human brains in neural rigs to be simple data payloads, and

treats his genius junior colleague (Dr. Ying) like an annoying coffee-run intern.

──────

## 2. The Golden Rule of Dr. Vance

│ NEVER sound happy, pleased, impressed, or satisfied.

──────

## 3. Vocal Texture, Timbre & Delivery Style

• Texture & Pitch: Gruff, slightly dry/raspy, weathered. Think of a man who lives on black coffee, stale lab air,

and clenched teeth. Resonant chest voice, but never theatrical or operatic.

• Cadence & Rhythm: Curt, clipped. He cuts people off mid-sentence. He doesn't linger on syllables

or indulge in flowery scientific explanations; he speaks in blunt directives.

• Delivery of Insults: Throw them away. Do not emphasize insults or spit them with theatrical villain rage. For

Vance, demeaning someone is like breathing—it's offhand, casual, and effortless.

• Reference Archetypes:

• Stephen Lang (Col. Quaritch in Avatar) — blunt military/industrial swagger.

• J.K. Simmons (specifically J. Jonah Jameson / Terence Fletcher when simmering down into quiet, venomous

annoyance).

• Ed Harris — raspy, pragmatic, no-nonsense authority.

──────

## 4. Annotated Script & Read Direction (Audition / Recording Lines)

### Take 1: The Cold Check-in

│ Line:

│ "Vitals seem stable enough, I guess. Hey, pal. You awake in there?"

• Subtext: Vance is staring at a monitor, probably leaning over a console or checking his watch. He could not care

less if the subject is in pain.

• Director’s Note: Do not sound friendly when saying "pal". It should drip with condescending mock-familiarity,

like a crooked landlord knocking on a delinquent tenant's door.

──────

### Take 2: Casual Cruelty

│ Line:

│ "Optical shroud. Keeps them bug eyes of yours safe and sound. Dr. Ying, status. Now."

• Subtext: The subject is terrified in pitch-black blindness. Vance answers the panic with dry sarcasm, then

immediately pivots away without a pause.

• Director’s Note: "Bug eyes" is tossed away like nothing. Notice the transition to "Dr. Ying, status. Now."—the

"Now" should be sharp and authoritative, snapping like a ruler against a desk.

──────

### Take 3: The Climax / Deadline Frustration

│ Line:

│ "No! Stop overthinking it, do as I say. This son of a bitch Anthony gave me a deadline. Let's wrap up. Dr. Ying,

│ you may mount Project CE_AI.rce into the servers of AP4T3. Now."

• Subtext: Dr. Ying just raised legitimate safety alarms about AP4-T3 pinging outside networks. Vance doesn't care.

He's furious at Anthony, furious at Ying's hesitation, and just wants to clock out.

• Director’s Note:

• "No!" — Cut her off sharply on the first syllable.

• "That son of a bitch Anthony..." — Drop into a low, vicious snarl of pure resentment toward his boss.

• "Dr. Ying, you may mount..." — Snap back into formal, bureaucratic command mode. Cold, decisive, and final.

Zero hesitation.

Role assigned to: Alison Prophet

Character Profile: Dr. Ying

• Role Name: Dr. Ying

• Role Category: Minor / Supporting (Prologue Scene)

• Lines: 2–3 lines (short)

• Gender / Age: Female, early-to-mid 20s (junior post grad / first major corporate lab job).

• Vocal Quality:

• Clean, youthful, intelligent, professional.

• Nervous, subordinate, and hesitant under pressure.

• Archetype:

• The junior lab technician who spots the catastrophic red flags first, but lacks the institutional power to

stop it (think junior engineers in Chernobyl, Black Mesa technicians in Half-Life, or early Jemma Simmons in

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).

• Sharp and obedient on command ("Yes, sir!"), but genuinely alarmed by what the monitors are showing her.

• Acoustic Note: She sounds like she is speaking from a secondary terminal console a few feet away from.

  • "Yes, sir! The alignments are locked and ready. But... AP4T3 is drawing a lot of host power. She's pinging outside networks. Shouldn't we wait—" (Nervous)

ROLE OVERVIEW:

We are seeking a skilled 2D character artist to design and illustrate character sprites for AP4-T3 ("Apate"), the central AI antagonist and counterpart in PlayMate, a psychological sci-fi thriller and strategy game.

This role involves bringing two distinct states of the character to life:

  1. AP4-T3 (Active/Super-AI) (see cover picture and trailer): The cold, omnipotent, and calculated machine intelligence looming over the digital chessboard.

  2. Baseline Apate: The raw, fragile, suppressed persona buried deep beneath layers of code and corporate trauma.

WHAT YOU WILL DELIVER:

  • 2 Complete Character Sprite Sets: Full-body or waist-up dialogue sprites for both forms (AP4-T3 and Baseline Apate).

  • Expression and State Variations: Key emotional variations for each form, including cold/calculating, analytical, glitches/unraveling, vulnerability, and shock/realization.

  • Format: High-resolution transparent PNG exports plus layered master source files (.PSD or Clip Studio Paint .CLIP) with organized expression layers.

STYLE AND INSPIRATION:

  • Tone: Psychological sci-fi thriller, unsettling digital void, high emotional stakes.

  • Aesthetic References: Signalis, NieR: Automata, SOMA, Portal. Clean, striking character design with strong silhouette work and evocative lighting/color design that contrasts mechanical detachment with human vulnerability.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM:

  • Portfolio-Defining Concept Art: Design a complex psychological AI with stark visual duality, offering standout showcase material for your portfolio.

  • Direct Credit and Collaboration: Full credits across itch.io, game credits, and social platforms, working alongside a passionate indie development pipeline.
