Pencils: A Short Audio Drama (Voice Actor and Audio Engineer Needed)

Pencils: A Short Audio Drama (Voice Actor and Audio Engineer Needed)

Project Overview

Pencils is a short suicide awareness audio drama.

The main character, Chase, is seen in his room writing his last goodbyes to his family. When he knocks over his favorite mug and it shatters right in front of him, the thought of his parents finding him dead suddenly felt real. He didn't want to put anyone through that, especially his little sister, Nikki.

Anyone can try out, but I will be choosing each voice actor based on a few factors:

-Mic quality: the higher the quality, the better, but you don't need to have a $1000 mic to try out

-Line delivery: Emotion is key, especially for anyone trying out for Chase. Make the listener believe that everything you are saying is true and natural

-Your age/what age you sound like: Chase is sixteen and Nikki is anywhere between five and ten, the narrator is definitely older and more mature than them, but the specific age doesn't matter

-Level of background noise: try and keep background noise to a minimum. The less background nose, the smoother the finished product will sound

-How well your voice fits the personality of the character you try out for: just try and make the character your own and I will see if your view on each character fits mine

Good luck and have fun!

Our story focuses on Chase, who is sixteen years old. He is considering taking his own life, but by the end of the story, realizes how much his family loves him and how this will affect them.

I'd prefer to have Chase's voice not very low, and to have him be emotional, but not overly so. Somebody with a more feminine/female voice may try out for Chase, but his voice should not be so high to the point where calling him a male would make little to no sense.

  • (While writing a letter)

And finally, Nikki. I know you’re still young, and you may never remember me, but I at least want to give you this. Mom and Dad love you so much, please never forget that. You can have my room and all of my old toys. When you get older, you could even wear my clothes. Just look after Mom and Dad, okay? They’re really going to need you.

  • (After seeing his shattered mug scattered on the floor)

That was… my favorite mug… it was the first thing I ever bought all by myself…

  • (To his little sister, Nikki)

I love you. Don’t forget that, okay?

Nikki is Chase's little sister who wakes up right after Chase decides not to take his own life. Unbeknownst to her, she is helping Chase through a really hard time in his life just by saying good morning to him.

Nikki is anywhere between the ages of five and ten, and she is innocent and has no clue that Chase was about to take his own life; she is just showing her true love for her older brother.

  • (To Chase) I love you too, Chasey

The narrator can have any accent, but I was picturing his voice to be deep and soothing.

  • (Introducing the story)

Our story begins about four fifty-seven in the morning in the small town of Bayville, New Jersey. Sixteen year old Chase sits alone in his room, only accompanied by a faint candlelight and a job that has yet to be finished. The house is still, but the world outside his window is anything but.

  • "I can’t do this"

The warm tears in his eyes finally spilled over and rolled down his

    cheeks.

    "They love me."

  • As our story comes to a close, I hope that you never forget, my friend, you are loved. Whether it be by your family, your friends, or even someone from work or school that never quite has the confidence to introduce themselves. And, even if you think that there are not many of these people in your life…

I love you. Don’t forget that, okay?

The audio engineer(s) will be in charge of creating a variety of background noises during the story and helping me put together all of the sounds, voices, and music into one smooth audio.

For your audition, can you send me in an example of birds chirping, wind howling (not heavy like during a storm, a light wind), and the sound of pencils being moved around in a glass cup/container, either all together or in three separate audio files, whichever you prefer.

  • Say something you think would fit
