(P5FX) Persona 5: The Phantom X - English Fandub (Wave 1)

(P5FX) Persona 5: The Phantom X - English Fandub (Wave 1)

Project Overview

In a recent interview, one of the Chief Producers of Persona 5: The Phantom X, Jun Matsunaga, stated that an English dub for the game was "not in the works". Due to the game releasing globally extremely recently, myself and a few others have decided to take it upon ourselves to put together a dedicated crew to dub content of the game as it releases. This is P5FX, or what we'll come to know as; Persona 5: The Fandub X, a team of voice actors who will aim to bring life to both new and returning characters.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

What is P5X?

Persona 5: The Phantom X is a free-to-play gacha game for iOS, Android, and PC, released in China, Korea, and Taiwan in 2024, with it coming to the West, Japan, and South East Asia in 2025. It takes place in an alternate timeline of the Persona 5 series, with a new host of Phantom Thieves, and a focus on alternate worlds as a whole. The main protagonist, Wonder, forms the Phantom Thieves of Desires to restore hope back to the public by stealing the hearts of "Menaces", targets of the group that cause others around them to lose their faith in the world. The game itself bears a lot of similarity to the Persona 5 style, whilst giving a new unique spin on the franchise.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

What exactly would this group aim to do?

With the current lack of an English dub and one not in the works, it would take, at the least, a year, potentially longer, for any official dub to come to fruition if we take Matsunaga's comments at face value. P5FX would give voice actors and fans of the series a chance to voice these new characters, as well as older ones such as the original Phantom Thieves of Hearts, and eventually members of SEES and the Investigation Team. Our goal would be to dub content as it is released globally, using in-game footage as the base. This can range from social links, general story cutscenes, or even battle lines. The possibilities are truly endless. We would aim to publish these videos at a moderate rate on our eventual channel, as this is not necessarily a project with strict deadlines attached to it, and more of just what it should be, a group of fans having fun.

An important thing to point out is that this is entirely fanmade and completely non-profit. We as a group do not wish to stand as any sort of "official" dub for the game, and if one is to be announced, our videos will always be distinct from the 'P5FX' tag used.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

What is 'Wave 1'?

Due to the fact P5X is a live-service game, with new content being added as time progresses, we have decided to cast in waves. The first and initial wave, aka. this specific Casting Call, will be the biggest one with several main roles to fill. This will range from the main characters featured in the story, the 'Phantom Idols' aka. characters you can pull from the game's gacha system from version 1.0 to just before version 2.0, and also the roles of our antagonists. Not all Phantom Idols will be featured in this first wave, particularly those who either have little to no content outside of being able to be summoned or lack much presence in the story. If you see a character in the game when it launches, but not in this first wave, it is because we thought it'd be best to wait until that character receives more lines in the game. Additional casting calls will be made for future characters when we decide to cover that content.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

What about the characters that already have English voice actors?

If an official dub were to come along, I have no doubts that the extremely talented cast of Persona 5 / Royal alongside the cast of Persona 3 Reload would be brought back and do an excellent job in their characters. As a fandub project, we are not asking for people to simply replicate their voices. We will value your own interpretation on a character like Joker more than if you were to simply audition sounding like his voice actor.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Before You Audition

  • You need to be 15+ to audition.

  • Please make sure you have Discord to communicate with the team and be prepared to do just that. We value communication heavily.

  • There will be no casting done until the deadline hits.

  • This is an optional requirement, but being a fan of the Persona franchise will always be an extra boost due to the fact you'll be able to understand a lot of the terminology used. However, if you aren't a fan or haven't even gotten into it, this should not deter you whatsoever, and whether someone is a superfan or may simply be seeing Persona for the first time through this Casting Call will not impact any chances of them being cast.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

When Submitting Your Audition

  • Please record your auditions in the 'ABC' format. You can have a maximum of three takes for each line, but you are not required to.

  • Within the additional notes, please leave a name you would like to go by, your Discord username and any additional information you feel you should add.

  • MP3 or WAV format.

  • Your voice quality will be very important to how far your audition may go with us. If there's a significant amount of background noise or you are consistently peaking for example, there's a good chance that your audition will be rejected almost instantly. We are not too picky on audio quality as a lot of irregularities can be fixed in production, but the cleaner, the better.

  • If possible, please do not submit an audition recorded on your phone. However, an external microphone attached to your phone is more than okay.

  • Please don't artificially modify your voice in any shape or capacity. You will be rejected instantly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

P5FX is a fanmade non-profit dub based off of Persona 5: The Phantom X by Perfect World Games, Atlus, and Sega. We do not claim the property as our own and encourage you to support the original release.

Latest Updates

  • Casting complete!

Hello everyone, a final update for Wave One of P5FX auditions. We have chosen the 23 voice actors that we would like to join the P5FX team. You won't see them casted on here just yet, only when they officially accept the role. We plan on messaging people from tomorrow, aka. August 18th, so please be on the lookout for a Discord request from either 'renarine' or 'Seeker_ODI'.

  • 24 hours remaining!

Hello everyone! We're blown away by hitting nearly 500 auditions for just the first wave of this project. I wanted to make one final update as there is now just over 24 hours left to audition. You may have noticed the deadline time changing, but we initially thought we'd set the deadline to midnight (GMT) on the 13th, when in actuality it's been at midday on the 13th this whole time. This has now changed and you will have until 11:30 PM (GMT) to submit your auditions aka. an extra 11 and 1/2 hours than what was initially presented. We apologise for this inconvenience, but look forward to seeing how many more may come in.

  • Second round of checks.

Hello everyone. As you may have noticed last night, we did our second round of checks. From here on out, all auditions will either be shortlisted or dismissed as we near closer and closer to the deadline. There will be one last round of checks right before the deadline, and after the deadline hits, we will most likely be taking a few days to formulate our final choices.

In today's update, I figured I'd go over what an audition usually has to meet to get on the shortlist. We've already explained the audio quality side, as even if you don't have the best initial quality, if you show qualities such as great acting, energy, and generally give a good performance, plus if we believe we can help fix your audio issues, then we are more than willing to give the benefit of the doubt. Energy is another big thing. We want you to guys not to read, but to act these lines. There's been a lot of instances where we really like somebody's voice, but we don't feel they're putting in enough energy. How you format your files is something else. Your takes should be spaced out appropriately, and what we've noticed a lot, is some people's auditions all being recorded in one full take. This is very easy to notice and usually we will auto-default to a dismiss.

There's only a few days left before the deadline ends, and we're looking forward to seeing what else comes in!

  • First round of checks.

Hey, everyone. We'd like to provide an update regarding our first round of audition checks.

Last night, you may have noticed your auditions either being shortlisted or dismissed. We'd like to provide a few pointers related to any dismissals if you would potentially like to try and resubmit down the line, as there's still plenty of days left to audition.

    • We can't exaggerate how important audio quality is. A lot of the auditions we had to outright dismiss because of the quality. It can be tricky to get just right, but make sure any other sounds are blocked out, you're not standing too close to the microphone or far away, and that your room is suitable for recording.

    • A lot of auditions also needed that extra amount of care put into them. We were noticing that a few mistakes were left in certain auditions, even what we can only describe as 'bloopers' being present in the final product. Also, space is very important. Your lines should be spaced out appropriately and not all cramped together.

We had a really fun time listening to all auditions sent in so far and plan to do another check in about a week or so. We appreciate every single person who has auditioned and we thank you for checking out our project.

  • Social media page!

We now have an official page where all future updates, information, and much more will go! Please feel free to follow us on Twitter @P5XFandub!

Role assigned to: Jacob Keil

The protagonist of Persona 5: The Phantom X, canonically named Nagisa Kamishiro, is a second-year student at Kokatsu Academy, and the leader of Phantom Thieves of Desires under the codename Wonder. As the main story progress, the protagonist shows he can be focused and serious when the situation calls for it. He shows a strong sense of justice and will to help others and rescue people in peril. In spite of his quiet demeanour, he is often rather outwardly emotional. This is especially apparent during after he has visions, which typically depict potential disasters. His reactions to these visions tend to give people the impression that he is prone to worrying or overly stressing himself out.

Voice Description: Medium-high male vocal range. Compassionate and reasonable, he may show greater emotion towards certain situations, especially when somebody he cares about is in danger.

Voice description:
  • male teen
  • "Please, call me Wonder. From now on, we're teammates."

  • "Let's retreat. I won't let you push yourself more than you need to."

Role assigned to: Nathan Martin

Lufel is a mysterious being with ties to Mementos, and a member of the Phantom Thieves of Desires, also known under the codename, Cattle. He lost his memories after entering the real world, aside from a strong drive that believes humans should embrace their desires. He seeks out the protagonist with the intent of nurturing him to awaken his Persona and has stuck with him since. During the group's activities as Phantom Thieves, Lufel acts as their guide.

Voice Description: Medium-high androgynous vocal range. He speaks like a much older man, and is very direct and polite in his way of speaking, however, he can still easily be flustered if someone offends him deeply.

Voice description:
  • androgynous

  • "It's easy to forget that 'desire' can mean more than greed or lust; it also fuels the will to live."

She is considerate of others and is widely popular with both male and female students at her school. One of her strongest passions is baseball, and is known to be a natural prodigy at it, even from a young age.

Voice Description: High-female vocal range. Cheerful and full of energy, with almost little to no room to allow herself to slow down.

Voice description:

Role assigned to: Ren

Shun Kano is a second-year-student at Kokatsu Academy and a ramen chef in-training at Victory Kitchen. He is a member of the Phantom Thieves of Desires, also known under the codename Soy. From the outside, Shun comes off as a bit of a loner, someone who likes his own company when eating lunch. He is shown to be rather awkward, intense and direct to the point of seeming stand-offish. However, this impression belies the fact that he is kind, sincere and talkative about his interests. His strongest traits are his passion and loyalty, and he shows a lot of deference and respect towards the adults who have supported him.

Voice Description: Medium-low male vocal range. Passionate about his work and friends, Shun often still finds himself coming off as rather intense in conversation, but it's clear he has a heart of gold.

Voice description:
  • male teen
  • "How about Soy? Generally, seasonings are divided into five types, right? Soy sauce is one of them."

  • "If it means even the slightest chance of winning the shop back, I have to take the risk."

Role assigned to: Quinn Briar

Riko Tanemura is a third-year student at Kokatsu Academy and serves as president of its disciplinary committee. She is a member of the Phantom Thieves of Desires, also known as the codename Wind. Riko carries herself with a composure and maturity that befits her upbringing and status. Her sharp analytical mind and natural leadership make her a dependable figure during moments of crisis. To those around her, Riko may seem distant and unapproachable, her measured tones and reserved demeanour giving the impression of someone detached from personal connection. Yet this cool exterior is a carefully constructed façade, born of her upbringing in a world where worth was measured by status and achievement.

Voice Description: Medium-female vocal range. Coming from a prestigious family, Riko exudes authority with every word, and carries herself with the highest honour.

Voice description:
  • female teen
  • "Something, 'incredible'? Then... how about Wind? I'll do my best to guide you."

  • "I heard that some of the students had gone too far, so I came over to check it out. Please, explain what happened."

Role assigned to: JazzCat

Ren Amamiya is a second-year transfer student at Shujin Academy, being placed there to continue his academics whilst on probation. He is the leader of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, also known as the codename Joker. Ren is a friendly, kind and observant person with a strong sense of justice. He is persuasive, playing with people's interest to convince them or using his intense gaze for intimidation to help him in his information gathering. He appears to be extremely kind, and unable to leave anyone in trouble as stated by Ryuji. He is also seen to be very understanding and sympathetic. He appears quiet and well-mannered, but this behaviour is a profound ruse that hides the heart of a rebellious trickster. He is extremely resistant to rigid and dogmatic forms of control-based authority and order.

Voice Description: Medium-male vocal range. Well mannered, polite, but also holding a strong sense of justice. A typical protagonist-type character who isn't afraid to show off when possible.

NOTE: You can use the official English voice of Ren, Xander Mobus, as a reference, but this is not a requirement nor will it influence the final casting decision.

Voice description:

  • "Are you okay? Still holding up?"

  • "I didn't think there were other Persona users out there... the world continues to surprise me."

Morgana is a mysterious being with ties to Mementos. He is a member of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, also known under the codename Mona. At first glance, Morgana appears to be an ordinary cat, as he meows and self-grooms. While considered to be a cat by the story, aside from the fact he can talk, he's intelligent, talented, down-to-earth and capable and displays many human-like qualities, proving that he has at least a human psyche in spite of his appearance and circumstances.  In simple terms, his personality is prideful: Morgana is chivalrous at heart, and has a polite and eloquent way of speaking, and while having a threatening attitude to make himself appear bigger, he is very gentlemanly towards women.

Voice Description: Medium-high androgynous vocal range. Smart, but easily caught up in wanting to chase down treasure, he can often turn on the charm when faced with any lady.

NOTE: You can use the official English voice of Morgana, Cassandra Lee Morris, as a reference, but this is not a requirement nor will it influence the final casting decision.

Voice description:

Ryuji Sakamoto is a second-year student at Shujin Academy and a former track star. He's a member of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, also known under the codename Skull. Ryuji is known as a disruptive "problem student" at school whose bad behaviour causes all sorts of trouble for the teachers. He is quite proud of his status as a self-proclaimed "troublemaker" and his rebellious, mischievous and disobedient nature are the perfect qualities to be a Phantom Thief. He is also rather short-tempered, easily taking offense from even the slightest of comments, making him resort to trying to be threatening. That being said, Ryuji has a strong sense of morality and lives by his beliefs of right and wrong, putting it on high priority. As such, he sees through people's attempts at excusing their actions with sympathy, and is the first to untie the twisted context of right and wrong.

Voice Description: Medium-male vocal range. Upbeat and full of life, Ryuji personifies a true rebel at heart, but his energy is still extremely warm and friendly.

NOTE: You can use the official English voice of Ryuji, Max Mittelman, as a reference, but this is not a requirement nor will it influence the final casting decision.

Voice description:

Ann Takamaki is a second-year student at Shujin Academy and a part-time model. She is a member of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, also known under the codename Panther. Ann is a very kind and compassionate girl, enough for it to be noted by both Morgana and Sojiro Sakura. Years of isolation due to her looks have left her very withdrawn, with the belief that she's lost her place in the world, but this hasn't stopped her from opening up to the people close to her and have fun. Although Ann is outwardly good and kind-hearted, and she genuinely wishes to help people in need, it comes at the cost of opening up her heart to inherent wrongness, evil and unforgiveness all at the ultimate result of making things better for others. She doesn't lose sight of this worldview for the sake of petty vengeance, especially when against Suguru Kamoshida, a terrible man that would try to hide in shallow honour and goodwill, even trying to offer his life to save himself.

Voice Description: Medium-high female vocal range. A very friendly and sweet individual, she can often let her emotions get the best of her, especially when her friends are in danger.

NOTE: You can use the official English voice of Ann, Erika Harlacher, as a reference, but this is not a requirement nor will it influence the final casting decision.

Voice description:

Yusuke Kitagawa is a second-year student at Kosei Academy and an aspiring artist. He is a member of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, also known under the codename Fox. Yusuke's entire life's passion is comprised of and surrounded by art. He searches for the aesthetic everywhere in his surroundings, from people to places. He sees every opportunity or challenge presented to him as a way to broaden his horizons, and primarily considers how it will benefit him greatly as an artist. He is captivated by the painting of "Sayuri," and seeks to capture the sense of beauty that it portrays. His passion for art is admired and respected by the group, though they also view him as rather strange. His mindset plays by the beat of his own drum, and his thought process can be erratic. At one point, Ann claims that he is "on a different wavelength than other people" before taking it back and saying he's just weird. However, Yusuke is well-aware that his mind operates differently from that of most people's, to the point of admitting that he's eccentric.

Voice Description: Medium-low male vocal range. Eccentric and still unsure about a lot of common factors in the world, Yusuke does not mind if people view him as weird compared to others.

NOTE: You can use the official English voice of Yusuke, Matt Mercer, as a reference, but this is not a requirement nor will it influence the final casting decision.

Voice description:

  • "An unprecedented inspiration just flashed in my mind! Please, may I sketch you right away!"

  • "Yes... I get rather hungry when the topic of food comes up, and today I've only had hot water so I'm even hungrier."

Makoto Niijima is a third-year student at Shujin Academy and the president of its student council. She is a member of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, also known under the codename Queen. Makoto has a compliant temperament that she never breaks out of. She is a level-headed and kind person, almost to a motherly extent. That side of her would be highlighted when she'd help Futaba Sakura and at a few points Morgana. That being said, following her awakening, that discipline would be self-asserted, and in turn she would be strict on others and have an unrestricted and violent way of expressing that. Despite appearing prim and proper on the surface, Makoto is actually more of a tomboy: she's trained in aikido, enjoys violent action movies, never wears skirts other than her school uniform (which she wears leggings under) and seems to care little about fashion other than the headband she wears in her hair.

Voice Description: Medium-female vocal range. Forward and almost strict to a degree, she maintains a modest amount of politeness, even around her friends who often tell her to loosen up a bit.

NOTE: You can use the official English voice of Makoto, Cherami Leigh, as a reference, but this is not a requirement nor will it influence the final casting decision.

Voice description:

  • "It was better to get a feel for the situation than to act recklessly, yes?"

  • "Well, this is not the time for leisurely greetings, so let's get a move on!"

She gets sent to the hospital soon after, making her unable to participate in the line-up and even difficult to continue playing baseball.

Voice Description: High-female vocal range. Sweet all-around, but fairly shy and nervous when around others such as Nagisa. Attempts to do her best for those around her, especially Motoha.

Yumi Shiina is a 26-year old bartender working at an underground bar in Shibuya. A cognitive manifestation of Yumi as a phantom idol was created by Merope from Nagisa Kamishiro’s cognition, also known under the codename Phoebe. She used to be an active dancer in her school's dancing club, experienced in different kinds of dances like belly dance, but later she quit. Now, she uses her dancing skills on her bartending as an attraction. In her social link, she's seen to be advanced in making all kinds of drink with an unmatched amount of flair, making non-alcoholic mocktails for the protagonist to try.

Voice Description: Medium-female vocal range. Composed and work-orientated, she's also extremely charismatic and can change her tone on a whim depending on the situation.

  • "Just like that! Making a drink while performing is what we call fancy bartending!"

  • "Ah, please don't worry! I can make non-alcoholic drinks just for someone like you."

  • "I'd like to hear other people's thoughts... especially if they're seeing this kind of bartending for the first time."

Merope is an assistant of Igor in the Velvet Room and acts as as a concierge to Nagisa Kamishiro. Professional and polite, Merope is very dedicated to her job, and gives the impression of being incredibly composed. Stemming from her role, she places a lot of emphasis on human desires in conversation, and will often point to how certain behaviours and activities are proof of desire. However, like many an attendant before her, Merope has an eccentric side and displays a curiosity towards the world outside of the Velvet Room and particularly the activities of her guest. Due to her focus on human desire, her ability to summon Phantom Idols and her interest in the human world, Merope becomes a fan of idols and maid themed cafes.

Voice Description: Medium-low female vocal range. Elegant, polite, and still rather inexperienced with the world around her, Merope is willing to learn everything to do with humans and their desires.

  • "I hope you can copy this pose I discovered. It seems to be very popular amongst idols."

Igor is a recurring important figure in the Persona series. His role is crucial in every Persona protagonist's journey. Despite his rather striking appearance, Igor bears a calm and courteous demeanour while speaking with the protagonists. Though the well-being of the protagonists is important to him, he reserves the disclosure of certain information for more "timely" points in the story. During conversations concerning the protagonists’ actions, Igor opts for rather cryptic comments that tend to foreshadow coming events and possibly the outcome of the story as a whole, regardless of whether or not those comments are at the time understood (which may be his intent). This suggests that Igor may have near-omniscience, though by his own admission, there are things that even he can't foresee. Additionally, he also takes a neutral stance himself, and almost never directly interferes or gives obvious warnings to any people or anything that he had a contract with.

Voice Description: Low-male vocal range. An all-seeing being, Igor speaks like a wise older man and aims to remain neutral, even when faced with ruin. He's always somehow very cryptic.

NOTE: You can use the official English voice of Igor, Kirk Thornton, as a reference, but this is not a requirement nor will it influence the final casting decision.

  • "Welcome to the Velvet Room. A place between dream and reality."

  • "Allow me to grant you a new power worthy of your current self. Though you have my aid, be sure not to let your guard down."

  • "I wonder... if you have what it takes to stop this impending ruin."

Takeyuki Kiuchi is a former baseball player who lost his career after an incident and became a salesman. He is the first target of the Phantom Thieves of Desires, as his actions cause people around him to lose hope in the world, leading to incidents such as Manaka Nagao's attempted suicide. Upon becoming a Menace, Kiuchi is a vengeful, arrogant and lustful man who has a reputation as a womanizer, and is known to attack and harass women at train stations. When Kiuchi was a baseball player, he was known to be rather arrogant, and would proudly believe he did not have to practice, claiming he was already a great baseball player through natural talent. Kiuchi also seems rather unscrupulous and callous, showing indifference towards the harm and the pain he causes women at the train station, shown by his response after he pushed Tomoko onto the train tracks while trying to attack Motoha. At the peak of his rampage, he appears to be entirely unrepentant, and mocks Motoha's intention to get him arrested.

Voice Description: Medium-low male vocal range. A womaniser in and out, every word Kiuchi states should carry an element of venom and arrogance to it.

  • "Oh, I'm terribly sorry, but I suppose accidents happen, don't they?"

  • "What a joke! They even wrote my name...!"

  • "I won't let you succeed! I won't let you steal away my prized treasure!"

Role assigned to: Kevin

Hiromu Miyazawa is a highly famous and well-respected food critic and restaurant owner. He is the second target of the Phantom Thieves of Desires, following his actions causing those around him to start losing hope in the world, including the closure of businesses around the country if they don't accept his bribes. He's also shown to be part of a conspiracy group of 'menaces'. When he's on camera, Miyazawa is an excitable and loud-mouthed man who actively reviews the dishes he eats. When the camera is off, however, he is shown to be an obnoxious, callous, resentful, demanding and spiteful extortionist who demands bribes from restaurant owners in exchange for giving positive reviews and not taking over the ownership of their restaurants. He doesn't like it when people interfere when he is shooting his show.

Voice Description: Medium-high male vocal range. A very slippery individual who only cares about the profit and fame he garners online. Has no qualms when it comes to those he extorts losing everything.

Voice description:
  • male adult
  • "The Food Fight video will be uploaded within the next few days, so I hope you're all looking forward to it!"

  • "If you hadn't defied me, everything would have worked itself out!"

  • "All those people who called me fake... I showed them what a fake truly looks like! Ahahaha!"

Kumi Katayama is the homeroom teacher of the protagonist and Motoha Arai at Kokatsu Academy.  She's seen as extremely caring and considerate by her students and other staff members, always making sure that those within her class are given a great amount of support to succeed, as well as checking in on those who may be falling behind, such as when she checks on the protagonist during the prologue. Katayama even cares about those outside of her class, such as Shun Kano, seemingly knowing about the incident involving Victory Kitchen and Hiromu Miyazawa. It is through Katayama that the incident itself doesn't spread throughout the academy. Katayama also cares greatly about Riko Tanemura, having done so ever since Riko had began attending Kokatsu.

Voice Description: Medium-female vocal range. Very forward and demanding as a teacher, but it's clear that she deeply cares for all of her students.

  • "Be careful not to make too much noise. You may be targeted... and it's my job as your teacher to keep you safe."

  • "You didn't write anything for your future plans. Are you doing okay?"

  • "And you two, stop filming. Hand over your cell phone."

We are looking for someone to capture footage from the game under certain conditions in order to create these videos. We would take footage from other creators from places such as YouTube, however, I ultimately feel better using footage that we ourselves have captured. This is not limited to one person, but you will potentially need to create a fresh account to capture from the beginning of the game onwards. There are no specific circumstances to apply, only that you are willing to help out with the creation of this fandub!
