Owlrabbit

Owlrabbit

Project Overview

(NOTE: Deadline Extension! I'll be extending the deadline whenever necessary. This is a project I fully intend to remain with long-term.)

(NOTE: We are also looking for programmers, despite it not being a role option on CCC. If you are interested, feel free to DM me directly or add me on Discord.)

Owlrabbit is a (hopefully) upcoming 2D Metroidvania inspired by Hollow Knight, Sekiro, and traditional swordsmanship. I started working on this project a while ago, but I know my limits well enough to know that this is something I could never even hope of completing solo.

You play as an unnamed Owlrabbit, small hunters low on the food chain. The upper food chain is ruled by three distinct species, each ruling a different layer of the forest. The waters are ruled by the titanic Hawknawa, a serpentine hawk that cause seclipses by swallowing the moon. The forest floor is ruled by the fierce Owldra, a many-headed owl with long necks. And lastly, the great canopies are ruled by the majestic Condoragon, the huge beast that rules the skies.

The core of the gameplay revolves around your four stances, each mapped to a direction on the Dpad. You can launch quick attacks from one stance, or more powerful attacks while switching between stances.

The main selling point of the stance system are the parries. By switching stances, you will perform a parry. Switching stances to the up or forward stances initiates a halting parry, and switching to the down or back stances initiates a deflecting parry. A halting parry will bounce an attack back, forcing the enemy to recover and granting you a damage bonus on your retaliatory strike. On the other hand, a deflecting parry won't interrupt the enemy's animation, but will instead just avoid the damage. You can parry most attacks either way, with halting parries usually being better. However, some powerful attacks indicated with a visual and audio effect, cannot be halting parried and must be deflected instead.

(To clarify regarding payment - Assuming development goes relatively smoothly, my intent for the project is to go until enough of a framework for the game is complete to show off in a crowdfunding campaign, which will be used to pay people and continue development.)

Latest Updates

  • Continuing Development!

Hey guys! Apologies for the false alarm, after letting the decision settle I decided that we'll be taking this project to Kickstarter as planned. Thanks for all your support so far in auditioning for the project!

  • Plans Moving Forward.

Hi everyone! Thanks to you all for auditioning for Owlrabbit. As you may have noticed, the deadline has shifted back from a few months from now, to tomorrow.

I've decided that the most reliable way to ensure that Owlrabbit sees success is to obtain funding through the Canada Media Fund and its Conceptualization Program. However, to meet the requirements for it, I will need to put Owlrabbit on the backburner. One requirement for the CMF Conceptualization Program is that the company, or company's president, has been working in the Digital Media, Film, or Television industry for at least a year. It is for that reason that Taho Games Studio will be working on other projects until we meet that requirement, ensuring both that we can obtain the funds needed to develop the game, and the experience to use those funds properly.

That said, this audition page was still far from useless. To those of you auditioning for the voice roles, I'll be contacting those selected and seeing if you'll be okay with still working on the project on a year-or-so delay.

    Thank you,

    • Logan
