Naruto Abridged: Shounen Hen - Pilot
Project Overview
Before you roll your eyes at the prospect of another Naruto abridged parody, let’s just take a moment to appreciate the fact that there is finally one using the obscure title of the HD Remaster of the anime.
No? Still don’t care? Fine.
Powered by an endless supply of fanfiction and run by two insomniacs, Naruto Abridged: Shounen Hen aims to be a modern take on Naruto abridging that takes itself seriously but doesn’t skimp out on humor.
For voice actors, we’re looking for folks with:
-A decent quality microphone
-Minimal background noise
-The ability to shout if needed
This series is intended to be a long term project, which means occasional time investment over the course of a long period of time. Recastings are inevitable, but we’d hope to avoid that as much as possible. So if your time may be limited or fluctuate, make sure to let us know.

Naruto Uzumaki
Container of the Nine Tails
Secretly born shortly before the Nine Tails attack on the Leaf, Naruto had the great beast sealed inside him by the Fourth Hokage. Having been left both an orphan and a scapegoat for the demon inside of him, Naruto grew up loathed by most of his village. However, rather than crumble under the hatred, Naruto strived to become accepted by everyone. He set out to become the greatest Hokage.
Having been a neglected orphan, Naruto isn’t the sharpest kunai in the pouch, but where he lacks in book smarts, he makes up for in creativity and determination. He wears his heart on his sleeve and constantly seeks attention and acceptance. He can be both loud and annoying, but also grow dead serious in the drop of a hat, especially when you hurt his precious people.
For this character, we are looking for someone who can give off the childish energy he is known to exhibit. The infamous smoker rasp is not necessary, but we won’t turn you away if you wish to use it in your audition.
[Obnoxiously loud, turns into chastising] What are we going to do today, sensei? Rescue princesses? Fight bandits? Or are we just going to pick up trash on the riverside while you read porn again?
[Speaking from his heart] Being Hokage means being like a really big road. At least, that’s what the Old Man told me. People step all over you and sometimes you need to be patched up, but knowing that you’re always there to guide them is what makes it worth it.
[Venomous] I’m only going to say this once. If you ever try to hurt my precious people again, I’ll kill you.
Voice Range: Mid
Personality: Cold and callous, masks his emotions.
Sasuke Uchiha
Survivor of the Uchiha Clan
Sasuke was envious of his brother for as long as he could remember. He always wanted to be acknowledged as more than just the lesser sibling to the would-be heir of the Uchiha Clan. That is, until said would-be heir slaughtered the entire clan and left Sasuke as the sole survivor and witness. Having had everyone and everything taken from him by the one person he looked up to, Sasuke was shattered. As such, he vowed to one day avenge his clan and kill that man responsible for his misery.
Because of the trauma and desire to grow stronger, Sasuke became apathetic to the people around him. Or at least that is what seemed to be the case. He still desired to interact with others and had emotions, no matter how much he came off as a person with a stick up his ass. He just wore a mask to the world, one that told everyone that the naive kid he used to be died during the Uchiha Massacre. Even if that was not even remotely true.
For Sasuke, we’re not necessarily looking for the cold and edgy Yuri Lowenthal-sounding voice. We’re looking for something younger. Something that can still sound cold and edgy, but something that by nature sounds like a kid wearing a costume. Or better yet, a mask.
[Apathetic] I don’t need to spend every waking moment of my life calling you stupid. You’re a ninja who wears a bright orange jumpsuit. You already do that enough yourself.
[Pissed] What the hell do you know? Were you betrayed by the closest person in your life, left to wake among the corpses of what was once your family? No, you weren’t. That was ME!
[Failing to mask his affection] Sakura, your hair is... short... It’s more practical for combat. And it... doesn’t look terrible.
Voice Range: Mid
Personality: Rational and nurturing, but explodes when his patience is tested.
Iruka Umino
Academy Teacher
Having been left an orphan from the Nine Tails attack, Iruka grew up isolated, much like the blonde haired boy he chose to blame for his parents’ deaths. Despite this, he would grow into a respectable and capable chunin, eventually becoming an academy teacher, where he found his true calling. Through guiding his students, Iruka was able to make the connections he desired as a child. However, it was the connection to a certain blonde haired scapegoat that would ultimately test his virtue as a teacher.
Iruka is an excellent teacher (when you pay attention to him). Through his unconsciously motherly attitude and desire to watch his students succeed, he is shown to help the majority of his class graduate (post-academy exams notwithstanding). However, Iruka is not one to be taken lightly, especially when it comes to his students’ safety. He can have a surprisingly short temper, but otherwise keeps his head on his shoulders at all times. And much like his eventual favorite student, he has an unbreakable determination to protect his precious people.
For Iruka, we’re looking someone who can give off a naturally calm vibe, but still give off some yells when needed. Overly nasal voices mimicking Vegeta3986 are not necessary, nor are comically high-pitched voices mimicking LittleKuriboh. Other than that, go wild.
[Calm lecture] Alright class. Today, we’re going to be covering the time the Fourth Hokage’s wife banned the Makeout Paradise series from our village. It’s not a time many like to talk about, but it’s history nonetheless.
[Outraged yell] NARUTO, STOP TRANSFORMING INTO NAKED WOMEN AND FOCUS ON YOUR TEST! YOU’RE DISTRACTING YOUR CLASSMATES!
[Somber] How can I call myself a teacher when I can’t even teach myself the difference between a demon and my precious student...
Voice Range: Mid
Personality: Casual asshole, does not hide his hatred well.
Mizuki Touji
Academy Teacher
Growing up, Mizuki became one of Iruka’s closest friends, but quickly grew to envy the attention Iruka gained from others through his foolish pranks. As such, he decided to make Iruka’s life miserable, as one does. Later, he would attempt to become an academy teacher but almost be stopped by a review council when it was brought up that he suffocated a comrade with a leg injury so that they wouldn’t hold back the mission. Of course, he got the job but detested his village once he found out about why he almost didn’t. As such, he decided to try and trick a student into stealing a scroll that he would give to Orochimaru, as one does. Seeing a pattern?
Mizuki is your run of the mill bad guy. He attempts to mask his impure intentions through his polite, albeit blunt, interactions with others. He is comically evil, desiring only power and not having much planned beyond that. Unlike many of the more successful ninja surrounding him, he does not think his actions through, resulting in him ending up in heat when shit hits the fan.
Also, for the record, I still cannot find the source on his supposed last name, so please take it with a grain of salt.
For Mizuki, we are looking for someone who sounds like a pathological asshole, able to casually throw around insults in normal conversation. He’ll have louder shouting moments as well, so being able to nail both would be ideal.
[Poorly trying to console] Hey kid, don’t beat yourself up about it. Some people in life were just meant to be failures.
[Sarcastic and obviously dismayed] Oh? The fox brat came back? Well Iruka, I guess this means someone DOES care about you. I’ll go put him down before you get his hopes up any further.
[Pissed] For the last time, just because I want to help out Orochimaru does not mean that he seduced me with some sort of freaky snake charm!
Voice Range: Deep to Mid
Personality: Wise and warm-hearted, but has years of regret and anger still lurking within
Hiruzen Sarutobi
Third Hokage
Shortly before watching his sensei march off to his death, Hiruzen was appointed as the Third Hokage for his willingness to sacrifice his life for his village. Over the course of his life, he has been part of the Three Shinobi World Wars (eventually joining the Fourth posthumously) and has made decisions leading to the deaths of thousands of his own and other ninja and civilians. During this time, he would become revered as the God of Shinobi, learn THOUSANDS of techniques, and train the three Sannin, a powerhouse team infamous among the Elemental Nations. However, his greatest challenge has proven to be taking the mantle following the death of his short-lived successor and watching as his village crumbles under its own glory.
Despite his history, he comes off as a tender old man who wishes the best for his people. He is shown to be caring to most he interacts with, and he holds an especially large place in his heart for the village’s scapegoat, having watched powerlessly as his people chose to ignore him. Beneath his softness lies a Will of Fire, a mantra that burns endlessly to protect his village. While he is shown to sometimes be affected by his emotions, at the end of the day, he must put them aside to make the tough decisions that only he as Hokage can make.
Hiruzen is likely going to be the toughest to cast, as elderly voices are often difficult to come by. That being said, we are looking for just that, a wise elderly voice that can give off a Will of Fire (or in less vague terms: a voice that embodies wisdom and determination). That in mind, he also has more emotional moments so try not to cut back on emotions for the sake of sounding wise.
[Calm lecture] The Will of Fire is more than just a saying. For those of us who hold it, who truly wish to protect our brothers and sisters of the Leaf, it is a way of life.
[Annoyed] For the last time, pranking the ANBU headquarters does not qualify as a valid ninja mission. Now, are you going to ask for an actual mission, or do I need to ask said ANBU to escort you out. (ANBU is pronounced [awn-BU])
[Somber, slowly grows dark] I’ve watched countless men and women under my leadership die horrific deaths. I’ve seen a clan nearly implode under its own pride, only to be wiped out by its heir. But my greatest regret in life was letting you get away while I watched helplessly. I will not make that mistake again.
