Modern Morality - VIRTUAL BAND SEEKS VA’S/ANIMATORS FOR LONGTERM PROJECT

Project Overview

Modern Morality is an all-female virtual band consisting of singer/guitarist Miandra Flowers, bassist Heather Rivera, and drummer Lynn Chen. Think Gorillaz, but next generation :) The band is based in Los Angeles (both in the fictional canon and IRL), and each of the girls possess some kind of aspect highlighting the city's diverse culture; see details of Heather and Lynn's stories in their respective roles. The music ranges from alternative rock to dreamy lo-fi and discusses topical issues including mental health and global warming. 

Modern Morality currently has two singles on Spotify and is gearing up for a debut album release this spring. I am casting the speaking roles of Heather and Lynn to be used in promotional material as well as a series of animated shorts and later, a mockumentary animated short film. 


Payment and Workload:

Voice Actors: These are longterm roles that will pay continually as lines are needed. Please don't apply for a role if you don't think you can stay committed. You won't be asked to record lines too often; I will be sending them in batches as needed once a month or so. You will be paid based on how many lines I send you.

All communication will be through Discord. If possible, I would love to have sessions in a voice channel to explain lines and minimize the need for retakes, but this is entirely optional. The Discord will be a fun and friendly place to hang out and discuss future material! :)

Animators: These are longterm roles that will pay continually per work completed per video. I will be assigning specific tasks based on each animator’s strengths to ensure that nobody feels overwhelmed. All communication will be through Discord, where we can discuss progress and feedback, reference images, as well as just hang out!


Other Important Details:


  • This project deals with mature themes so I would prefer VAs be 18+.

  • NO SINGING REQUIRED - These are speaking roles only as neither of the characters provide vocals on songs.

  • DISCORD IS REQUIRED for this project. Please include your username or confirmation that you have Discord in your audition.

  • As with most auditions, please be sure that your recording is HIGH QUALITY with minimal background noise. Please don't add effects or EQ to your recordings, they will be mixed in postproduction.

  • Payment will be sent through PayPal.

    Thank you so much to everyone who has auditioned or expressed interest in this project. Modern Morality has been a passion project of mine for over three years and it’s exhilarating to see it finally beginning to come together. I have just added a role for animators as I am looking to assemble a small team to help create videos. I am also currently writing scripts for multiple shorts that may need extras so I will be rolling those roles out as they arise. Because of this, the audition deadline may be pushed back a week or two, but I’ll keep watch on how many people audition before doing so.

THIS IS A MINOR ROLE FOR ONE VIDEO ONLY. I will most likely be using the audio from your audition in the final video so please provide a few of your best takes.

This is the middle-aged owner of a laundromat. He's a big hefty man who prides himself in his work, but gets into bouts of rage when he realizes he's been cheated. 

CONTEXT FOR THE LINES: You just found out that one of your long-time customers has actually been stealing from your store for months.

  • THIEF! THIEF! Get out of my store, you criminals!

  • I don't care! GET OUT! You critters! You belligerent fools! You lowlife gang of juvenile delinquents! I knew your generation couldn't be trusted! (as the line progresses, I imagine he might be pausing to think of new insults, but please provide one take without this note as well)

I am also looking for a small team of animators to help me with important tasks including in-betweens, line cleanup and coloring so I can focus on drawing storyboards and key frames. I will guide you throughout this project and provide plenty of reference images to help you out :)

I am looking ideally for people who already have experience with animation. Please submit a demo reel or any other relevant experience. Since Modern Morality is just starting out, I can only afford to pay animators $20 per video at the moment. However, this is an ongoing project with promise of more opportunities for pay in the future.

Heather (20) is a badass bass player and the one who formed Modern Morality. She grew up poor and got in with the wrong crowd when she was younger, and although she's better off now with her bandmates, Heather still gives in to her past vices. She has a short fuse, is extremely sarcastic and loves to poke fun at Miandra. Despite this, Heather is a good person and would never do anything to hurt her friends. Heather is bisexual.

Medium to low voice. Heather is Hispanic (Salvadoran) but she should not have any kind of accent. Daria is a great example of the kind of voice I'm looking for, though I want something a bit more gruff and expressive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdZsqZKT3oY

  • So uh... things got a little crazy last night. I had some friends over and uh... well... look at this. Smoke’s been coming out of it all day and I don’t know how to fix it. (kinda remorseful but mostly annoyed. she had a wild party and accidentally broke the band computer)

  • Are you FUCKING kidding me!? I come all this way with my clothes smelling like shit and you two spend all my quarters on candy!? (spoken while kicking a washing machine and subsequently scaring laundromat patrons)

  • So this is how you play the bassline for Little Problem. ... And that's about it. Watch your finger technique, you cannot mess this up or Miandra will get pissed. And then you play the same riff over, and over, and over, and over... (very dry. Miandra pronounced mee-ANN-druh)

Lynn (22) was born in China, where she grew up until moving to Los Angeles to attend college. There she met Heather who introduced her to punk shows. She and Heather saved up for a drum kit for their band and is now a whiz on the drums. Although she's very expressive through her personal style, Lynn is much more reserved and generally keeps to herself. She loves meditation and solitude but is also open to having a good time. Lynn is a closeted lesbian.

Due to her circumstances, LYNN OCCASIONALLY SPEAKS MANDARIN CHINESE and has a noticeable Chinese accent. This is required for the role. I'm looking ideally for a Chinese VA who can play her character authentically and also correct me if my translation is off, but I'm open to anyone who can speak the lines in a correct accent. I don't have a voice in mind for Lynn so feel free to interpret the role as you like.

Pay is $15 for this round of lines, with promise of more opportunities for pay in the future.
