Mobile Suit Abridged: Gundam Wing (Fan Parody, Scripted Comedy)

Project Overview

This is a labor of love for us, both in our enthusiasm for one of our favorite nostalgic shows and for our love of well-written scripted comedy. Most of the parts are in place for a two-season parody series that both respects and lampoons the source material. However, we have exhausted our local talent pool and are searching for online VAs to fill some important roles.

Knowledge of the series is unnecessary, though if you are unfamiliar with Gundam Wing and we cast you in a role, we will ask that you watch a number of episodes involving your character in order to get a sense for who you're impersonating and how to bring that original personality about in our script. The lines provided for auditions have links to the original lines pulled from the show. We ask that you reenact those lines to the best of your ability, but feel free to be creative with your delivery if you feel it better suits your voice. We want the voices to be recognizable to anyone who watched the original show, but they don't need to be exact carbon copies in most cases.

This work will be unpaid as the project is entirely not-for-profit. However, there will possibly be opportunities to become a permanent member of the team if we branch into more projects that could produce a profit. Actors will be expected to provide a few hours of work per month doing script reading, recordings and possible re-recordings depending on how involved his or her character is in that episode. All contributions will be credited on our website opmeat.com, our Youtube channel, Facebook group, Discord channel and season-ending credits.

We're excited to add new actors to our team, and to make a product that you'll be proud to put on a resume. Hope to hear from you soon!

  • Quatre Recasting and Hilde Resurrection for Mobile Suit Abridged: Gundam Wing!

We've got two open roles and have opened both for auditions!

First, due to circumstances outside of our control, we need to recast Quatre. Egamar has done a fantastic job playing him since the beginning, and we wish him the best, but unfortunately we'll need to move forward with a new actor in his place. If you've wanted to try your hand at a lead character in Mobile Suit Abridged, now's your chance to audition!

In addition to that, we opened a casting call for Hilde a few years ago and never decided on anyone. She became a secondary concern because she was still many episodes away and the pandemic had made just recording our current episode hard. But now that we've moved ahead, it's time to reopen that casting call and find our Hilde. We'll be going back through all of her previous auditions, but you can always resubmit even if you auditioned last time.

As we're working on the next three episodes in tandem, we want to find our next Quatre and Hilde sooner rather than later, so the current due date is March 1st. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to message us or contact us at [email protected].

Best of luck, everyone! And thank you for your interest and support!

  • New Roles Available! Deadline March 13.

We're casting for two new roles that will be coming up in the future for Mobile Suit Abridged: Gundam Wing. Our actors already affiliated with us will also be auditioning, but we wanted to give others outside our group a chance and possibly expand our team. For now, both roles are female supporting characters that will play major parts in the second half of the series: Dorothy Catalonia and Hilde Schbeiker. We may have other tryouts for male supporting characters in the future, so check back. We have a temporary deadline of March 13th to submit your auditions, though we will update that if needed or if we add more roles. I'd also like to apologize to anyone who submitted an audition for a part in the last year or two, as I unknowingly left roles open that had already been cast offsite. I'll make sure that doesn't happen again.
  • New Characters Needed!

As we put the finishing touches on our second episode, we're now beginning recording for episode 3. Unfortunately, one of our actors had to call it quits due to health issues, so we're opening up his role as well as adding two more minor roles that will be appearing in our next episode and beyond. All roles are adult males (sorry ladies!). We tentatively have a due date for auditions set for December 14th, giving you a few weeks to practice and submit your lines. However, we are hoping to have a much quicker turnaround on this episode than our past two, as the script is ready and we have more time to commit to our show now. So please be available to record your final lines for our script in December. We realize it's the holiday season, but we don't want to wait too long this time. As before, if we like your audition, we'll contact you to let you try the lines in our script and make sure you're the best fit for our show. Best of luck, everyone!
  • Apologies.

To everyone who has patiently waited on us: We hit some snags in our personal lives that forced us to temporarily put our comedy project on hold. I apologize for not making an update here and leaving you all waiting. But we are back on track and fully committed to a July 1st release date for our premiere episode. With that said, we will be officially casting roles we need today, and we will use this page to announce any further roles that will need cast as we move further into the series, including Duke Dermail, Dorothy Catalonia, Tsubarov, Quinze and more. So if you're still interested in being a part of our project, check back in the future. Thank you so much to everyone who put in an audition. We're excited to finally be doing this.
  • Thank you for all your submissions!

Hey everyone. We're excited by all the support our CCC post has garnered, and we've been listening to all your submissions as they've come in. This is a generic update letting you all know that we will be contacting you individually for follow-up auditions if necessary, but we're waiting until everyone has had a chance to submit their auditions by the original due date of 3/31 before we officially cast anyone. However, certain characters may be delayed to a future date if we haven't found just the right voice yet. You've still got a day left if you've wanted to try for a part!

Quatre Raberba Winner

[This is a recasting for a series role, as our original actor will no longer be available. If you're unfamiliar with our show, you can view episodes at https://opmeat.com/msagw/ to see our Quatre in action.]

Quatre is the gentle, kindhearted soul of the show's main cast. He's a fifteen year old boy raised in an absurdly wealthy family who has inserted himself into a group of freedom fighters despite being averse to war and fighting in general. He has an optimistic view of the world bordering on naivety, yet he also shows a surprising tactical awareness and sound logical process when he applies himself. He has a dark side, however, that can be triggered by his unresolved issues surrounding death, which sends him into a psychotic frenzy. This role is a two-sided coin: one side, his gentle and chipper persona, and the other, his maniacal and unhinged murderous persona.

We are looking for a higher-register, somewhat androgynous voice that sounds similar to either our previous actor, or to the original dub actor that he mimicked, Brad Swaile. We've provided voice lines for you to replicate in your own way, one from our show, one from Swaile in his gentle side, and one from Swaile in his going-crazy side. (Click the links for audio.)

1. (Egamar, Gentle) "Let's just get to know each other, Gundam buddy. I'm Quatre! What's your name? ... Oh. I don't like saying the D-word. ... No, the other D-word. ... No, the one you said before. ... No, the first one you said!"

2. (Swaile, Gentle) "I won't stop you, but at least tell me your name before you go. My name is Quatre Raberba Winner! ... Goodbye friend Trowa! We'll meet again!"

3. (Swaile, Crazy) "And the coloniy is satisfied right now... You people are satisfied with that?? I will never forget this day... you people... I'll make sure that you don't either. You won't forget this day!" *maniacal laughter*

We ask that you practice a voice that draws from these different interpretations of the character and submit what you feel confident in, even if it's not a 1:1 with our previous actor. We want the voice to sound similar so the transition to a new actor isn't jarring, but we're also open to new interpretations and want to encourage you to be yourself. Mic quality is important as you will need to raise your voice at various points in the show to show distress, anger, pain, etc.

This is a fan project that doesn't generate profits for us, so the role is listed as unpaid. If the role interests you but you will not do unpaid voice recording, contact us with your rates and we'll see if we can manage something. The role offered is for the rest of the series, spanning the rest of Gundam Wing and Endless Waltz, with new episodes to record every 4-8 months depending on when Quatre makes his appearances. If we cast you, we ask that you'll be available to record for our next episode within the month (about 60-70 lines as the lead character).

Hilde is a colony citizen with a positive attitude and an altruistic view of the world. She's the primary friend/romantic interest of Duo, and serves a supporting role in multiple episodes for what Duo is doing.

With this voice, we're not trying to match the original voice actor one-to-one. Rather, we're simply trying to find a "tomboy" voice with some scratch and some flair to compliment Duo's. Our goal is to make them the show's perfect couple, and we want someone who can match Duo's excitable, happy-go-lucky personality and animated voice. Unfortunately, most of the original show's Hilde lines are more even-keeled, so feel free to animate yourself and add some flair to these lines to showcase your personality.

Dorothy is the foil to the show's female lead, Relena. While Relena advocates for peace, Dorothy is fascinated by war, human conflict and the base nature of man. She's a master manipulator who, despite only being a fifteen year old girl, convinces the main antagonist of the show's climax to not only let her board his warship, but eventually to command his entire army.

She speaks with a very measured tone and low volume, often dipping into a deeper almost rasp when she wants to sound more ominous and a more cheerful display when she wants to put on a show of enthusiasm. We want to see both sides of her with these lines, so they're all fairly long-- take your time and really show the transition from gleeful to predatory in your takes! Because that's what we're looking for most of all.

Unlike some of our other roles, Dorothy will rarely need to scream or have a large dynamic range. She'll pretty consistently stay right like how she sounds in these lines.

  • Today is the day you become the leader of the world, Miss Relena! Ohhh, that won't do. That expression is simply not right! You must show them all your elegant smile. Because from this day on... you're the queen of the world.

  • Mr. Milliardo is a true genius! This way, even the soulless mobile dolls are able to fight with the mind of a human being. Now, my dear mobile dolls... let's see a spectacular dance!

    http://opmeat.com/Audition%20Sound%20Files/dorothy%202.mp3

  • The colonies betrayed the Gundams, the colony citizens killed your father, and finally the armed colonies declared independence from Earth before truly understanding what was going on. All of your battles up until now have been a true waste of time! Your sympathy toward others-- too much sympathy toward others-- has resulted in this worst case scenario.

He is an aristocrat's aristocrat. Suave and dignified, he is the type of man who would slap you with a glove to challenge you to a duel and do so completely seriously. He is the primary villain for season one, though he is unlike many villains in these sorts of parody projects. He is calm and precise with his words, and will probably never raise his voice at anyone. Ever. Everything that happens around him is "all according to plan", and that is reflected in his even, unwavering tone.

What we need in Treize's voice is a naturally lower adult male tone without sounding forced. There's always a 'cologne commercial' air to his voice that we want to capture more than anything, and he often annunciates a little more slowly than most would. He is a very static character, so you won't be asked to vary his delivery a whole lot. Treize is always in control, always one step ahead.

  • "I'm sure you are aware, but this is an important period. Do not do anything that would anger the Alliance."(http://opmeat.com/Audition%20Sound%20Files/treize_1.mp3)

She is a strict military officer, second in command of OZ under Treize. This shows in her barking tone and her ability to shout orders at her subordinates. Though she is a character with two faces, as she softens up considerably when talking to Treize directly, as she finds throughout the series that she is in love with him. For now, we are simply looking for the right voice to match her militaristic tone and deep voice, but after the initial tryout we will likely have you try some of her later lines in the series, where she sounds much more airy and soap-opera-esque.

Something to note about her original VA is that she is very heavy on the consonants. Listen to her hard t's in particular. While we would prefer casting a female for this part, we're open to the idea of a male actor attempting the voice due to its lower tone and her rather masculine mannerisms.

  • "The purpose of this visit is to find out for ourselves whether those rumors are accurate. Let's hope there's no truth to them."

Sally is a supporting character who will appear in the series from time to time as an aide to multiple main characters' subplots. She's a young but mature military presence to contrast the youth of the five Gundam pilots and the lead female, all of whom are fifteen years old. She will be shown in a few military confrontations, meaning shouting, grunting, etc. will be required for her actor in Sally's unique voice.

Her voice is remarkably steady and seems to be caught at the back of her throat in the way it comes out. Her original voice actress often read lines without much variance in the delivery, and we want to try and emulate that by making her a deadpan presence, thus making her more emotionally active moments more startling by contrast. The way this character will be used in the series hasn't fully been fleshed out yet, as she won't have any major role in the story until probably episode four. So feel free to be creative with your auditions!

Dr. J (or Dre, as he'll be called in our show) has a very memorable voice in the original show, and we want to replicate it to the best of our ability. He has a gravelly, almost stuck-in-the-throat sound to his voice, and rolls the 'R' in "Heero" very harshly. He often gives a somewhat ominous delivery to his lines, as shown in the two examples given, though we will be asking for some more jovial and deadpan deliveries in the show as well, as it's a comedy. He'll be the leader, as well as the voice of reason, for the entire crew of "Doctors," and will be present in multiple episodes leading all the way to the finale.

  • Since Heero was very young, we taught him a wide range of battle strategies. We brought him up as a professional assassin. ( http://opmeat.com/Audition%20Sound%20Files/dre_1.mp3 )

  • Heero is actually a kindhearted young boy. But Heero's very dedicated to his mission. Stay away from him if you value your life. ( http://opmeat.com/Audition%20Sound%20Files/dre_2.mp3 )

The Ringleader

The ringleader is about what you'd expect from a red-coated circus boss. He has a way of throwing his words out quickly every time he's gathered in front of a group, selling them an experience as much as anything else. In private, his voice can grow colder and lower, particularly when he's upset with Trowa (which will happen a lot.) The character is a voice we want to nail, but be aware that he appears intermittently through the show; there may be long stretches where we won't need you, but we want to keep the voice consistent through each appearance. Also please note if you would be comfortable singing in-character, as we will very likely make musical numbers involving the circus characters later on in the show.

  • Hey everyone, gather around! Ah ha ha! Our next performance is confirmed. Hold onto your hats: we've got a request from an Oz base! (http://opmeat.com/Audition%20Sound%20Files/ringleader_1.mp3)

  • Hmmm. Right. I'm going to let you handle this, Trowa. (http://opmeat.com/Audition%20Sound%20Files/ringleader_2.mp3)

  • Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce our next performance, shown here for the first time ever! Introducing the rising star of our circus, Trowa Barton! (http://opmeat.com/Audition%20Sound%20Files/ringleader_3.mp3)

He kind of has that "druggie grandpa" sound to his voice, with a strained, higher-pitch. In our show, we'll be emphasizing his desire to simply get paid, but past that, we're unsure what we'll be doing with his character as of now. He makes multiple appearances throughout the series, though it's almost always to show up and fix someone's mobile suit. There will be more in-depth acting in the late stages of the show when he becomes more of a necessary presence, but until that point, he'll show up for one-liners and brief appearances.

  • I know what you're saying, but it's not that simple. It's just human nature. (http://opmeat.com/Audition%20Sound%20Files/howard_1.mp3)

Mr. Darlian (pronounced "Dorlin", and no, we don't know why it's spelled that way either) is a minor character who will only show up in a few episodes, as he is murdered in episode three. However, he is a very important role in the characterization of the lead female, as the abandonment issues she strives to overcome will be keenly focused on the actions of Mr. Darlian in that three episode span. Virtually every time he speaks will be either a setup for a joke or a deep-voiced deadpan punchline. We also have plans for bringing him back later in the series for minor appearances in either flashbacks or hallucinations, so we may call upon you much further down the road as well.

For his voice, we're searching for a naturally deep tone and a diplomatic elegance. The original actor couldn't decide between a standard North American accent and a hint of British, so we can go either way. The most important part is sounding "fatherly" without sounding like you're forcing your voice into that deep of a tone. We want his age to be believable.

  • "I truly wish that were the only rumor. The latest false rumors spreading throughout the Alliance are much more grave."(http://opmeat.com/Audition%20Sound%20Files/VFM_2.mp3)

  • "Isn't it about time you people realized the ones posing the most threat are none other than yourselves?"(http://opmeat.com/Audition%20Sound%20Files/VFM_3.mp3)

We're searching for just the right voice to imitate the original actor who played the narrating part. His lengthy narrations were a staple of the series, as Gundam Wing used him often to make large jumps in time or to more properly explain the political goings-on that led to that episode's action, as well as narrating the beginning of nearly every single episode.

We plan to use this actor sparingly, primarily for comedic timing or narrating side videos, but capturing the nostalgic effect this narrator has on Gundam Wing fans is the most important part of this casting. Please be able to recite the line listed (in one take or in parts, it doesn't matter) in a very similar flow and annunciation to the link provided.

  • "With high expectations, human beings leave Earth to begin a new life in space colonies. However, the United Earth Sphere Alliance gains great military powers and soon seizes control of one colony after another in the name of justice and peace. The year is After Colony 195.
