is a children-oriented anime film made in 1986. It was directed by Masami Hata who also made stuff like "Ringing Bell" and "The Legend of Sirius".
However, this film is pretty hard to find. It was only released in Japan at the time it was made. It has not been released in the US at once, making this anime ultra-rare in physical copies.
despite this, I have found a high quality version of the film online within the last week. I have also found an official translation of the film.
There are minor and secondary characters entirely original for this movie only such as Prince Hal. Plus it has a few changes like Luigi wearing yellow instead of green, & the Mario Bros. are grocery store owners and not plumbers. This film is the earliest adaptation of the famous Mario game we all know and love.

Short about the beginning: The film begins with Mario playing some video game, until the beautiful Princess Peach suddenly pops out of the TV, only to be kidnapped by Bowser in front of Mario's eyes. So it's later up to the Mario brothers to save her.
The film stays very true to the Mushroom Kingdom (Princess Peach's famous home-place), as well as the iconic save-the-princess-plot. The popular enemies like Goombas (Kuribo) and Lakitu (Jugem) are also portrayed well. I cannot give much of a plot summary besides the "Save-the-princess who's forced into marriage" trope.

Mario as we all know is the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom.
This movie is the prequel to the games we all know and love.
Mario was playing a videogame one night, when suddenly a woman came out of the TV, she claimed to be a princess of a Mushroom Kingdom. A dragon monster came and took her away. Now it's up to Mario and Luigi to get her back!
(shocked as Peach enters the room from the TV) What the-?! Hey, don't!! Hey! Stop it!!!
(watches as the basic enemies fly around. Turns to Peach) These friends of yours or..? (peach hides behind him more) Oooooh kaay nevermind...
(sees Peach's necklace, picks it up. He's amazed by it. Speaks concerned)
Nevertheless, I wonder who she was? (holds it close)
She sure was beautiful..
(Angry) I won't have it!!
I don't care who this Koopa guy thinks he is! I won't let him get away with this!
(sighs,trying to calm down, turns to the king)
Sorry, will you tell us where to go?
(stops) huh?
Luigi, what's wrong?
(Luigi empties his bag out, the star drops out of it)
It's the star! Get back here! Wait!
(laughs) I got it!!! It's the shooting star! Yeah! we've got all 3 pieces!

Luigi is the sidekick brother of the famous Super Mario.
In this version of Super Mario, he is a lovable goof who is interested in the Legend of Treasure Kingdom.
He is loyal to Mario and holds the same personality we all know for Luigi (except less of a coward)
(Tired)
Hey bro, I brought ya some tea. Tea? (stops seeing him play a game) huh?
(sighs) Well, goodnight, Mario...
(Opens door, tired)
What is it this time?
Princess Peach? Who the heck is that?
Save her? She asked you to save her (Laughs)
I think I'll go back to my dreams to see the rest of that story. (yawns as he walks away)
(Notices the gem in Mario's hands. He gasps happily as he dashes over)
Hey, bro! Where'd you get this from?
("Don't Touch it!")
Aw, don't be a stranger; it's me!
(looks at gem)
This is a rare, mysterious gem that has a twin!
Of course, it is! Look!
(Runs to get the book)
"This stone will guide its master to a Treasure Kingdom! It's fields are filled with glittering emeralds. The water is filled with silver mushrooms. The nights are filled with diamond stars!" Amazing!
(Crying)
All the gold coins turned into rocks!
Dammit!
It's useless! (empties bag)
Princess Peach is the daughter of the King of the Mushroom Kingdom.
She is kidnapped by bowser as she usually is in the games.
In this version, however, she is kidnapped as he wants to marry her to rule her kingdom!
She prays for Mario and Luigi to find her, to bring her back home.
Oops, my apologies.

(scared)
It's King Koopa!
He's the leader of those monsters you saw...
He's a bad guy. He's made a mess out of our kingdom

(Koopa is doing shape shifting for her to try cheer her up. She gets an idea)
Say, This time I'd like you to transform into something small and cute!
(he asks what)

(picks him up)

(locks him in a box)

King Koopa is the villain of the film.
he is kidnapping princess peach in this version of Mario to try marry her to rule her kingdom
He is obsessed with her, and makes her uncomfortable to say the least.
Make him sound evil, but a bit of a goofy villain.
(Cheerful)
Say, Sweet Peach, about tonight's wedding...what kind of wedding dress do you want?
Pink? White? or maybe..- (is cut off)
B-but I am the only one who truly loves you, more than anyone else, Sweet Peach.
(evil laugh as he grabs her)
That sort of trickery won't work on me, Sweet Peach.
Now, I hope you won't think of any of anymore stupid things like trying to escape.
(Peach protests that Mario will save her)
(Speaks slyly)
Mario? He won't come.
I received a message from one of my henchmen earlier.
Apparently, they've captured this Mario.... Sorry about that~
(Angry at Mario)
How dare you RUIN my precious wedding!
Do you know what happens to those WHO ANGER ME?!

Prince Hal is a prince of the Flower Kingdom.
He was cursed by king Koopa and turned into a dog.
He accompanies Mario and Luigi in his cursed state to rescue Princess Peach.
(Barking happily)
(Growls, barking)

(is transformed back into his true form)
I am the prince of the Neighboring Flower Kingdom.
My Name is Hal.
When I came to see you, Koopa's magic transformed me into a dog.
Mario, Luigi. Thank you. You men are my saviors.
(bows) The true heroes!
(says his farewells)
Mario, Luigi! You two take care!
King Koopa's minions. These two follow the Mario Brothers and Hal around to make sure they fail.
They try put the Mario Brothers in danger to try get them out of the way.
(CASTING NOTE: This role may have two people selected for it.)
(Snickers)
It appears as though their lack of sustenance is troubling them....
(sly) We do know where there are plenty of delicious mushrooms.
("I love mushrooms!")

you see, entering the forbidden gold mine's a severe crime.
(Mario pleads, only for a sly response that mocks him)
That reminds me, the special wedding between Princess Peach and King Koopa is tonight.
It is sure to be a beautiful and sacred ceremony~ (Chuckles)
And with this we are sure to get a huge reward!
This Hammer Brother here's a great guard you know, best not to cause trouble!
Well, if ya feel like it, you could aways run out to sea and live there! (Laughs as they walk away)

After the dog leads Mario and Luigi into a warp pipe that brings them to the Mushroom Kingdom, the King awaits.
He tells them about this great land, and where to go to save Princess peach.
He talks about the 3 items needed
The mushroom of Truth, the flower of love and the star of Courage.
He is an old man, but a man of wisdom.
Welcome, Mario Brothers.
(laughs) Please, pardon the unusual introduction.
I have summoned you to the mushroom kingdom for only one reason: To help me!
You see, in the neighboring Metal Kingdom, there's a evil king known as King Koopa.
He is still bitter about Princess Peach turning down his marriage proposal,
and so has taken it out on our kingdom by destroying it and kidnapping our beloved princess Peach!
If you head due East from this point, you will most certainly reach the palace of Metal Kingdom. However! you first must conquer through the dangerous deserts, forests, steep mountains and vast oceans!
Further more, in order to save this kingdom by defeating King Koopa, you must obtain 3 Items of Power.
Yes, the three items that wield unusual powers:
The mushroom, the flower and the star!
True courage is born from true love.
That is the scared power.
The Mark of the Hero, Mario!
After being tricked by the goomba brothers, Mario finds himself lifted off to a nest of a paratroopa, he is saved by feeding the chicks laughing mushrooms to feed their hunger.
They try help Mario and Luigi from falling when they are in the Mushroom Fields.
(MAMA PARATROOPA LINES)

(unamused after Mario bites Luigi to say he's rotten to save him)

Freed from the coins that held her under the mushroom.
She gives Mario the mushroom and shows them the way.
(bows)
