Maoyu: English Dub
Project Overview
About Maoyu
Maoyu (Maoyū Maō Yūsha) is a series of Japanese novels by Mamare Touno, author of Log Horizon. It received a 12-episode anime adaptation by Arms that aired in Japan in 2013. The series follows the exploits of a human hero and the queen of demons who join forces to bring peace and prosperity to their war-torn world. The Anime can be found on Crunchyroll @ https://www.crunchyroll.com/en-gb/maoyu, Netflix @ https://www.netflix.com/title/80220729, Hulo @ https://www.hulu.com/series/maoyu-archenemy-hero-9c5273db-c5a7-4b74-8bdc-84e80e32b24c and various other online streaming services depending on region.
The plot
The story is set in a world embroiled by war between Humans and Demons. The Humans' greatest warrior known as the Hero invades the castle of the Demon King, leader of the Demons who is actually a Queen, as he is determined to vanquish her. However, instead of fighting back, the Demon Queen proposes an alliance with the Hero. She explains how a sudden end to the war can bring further chaos to the world as the Humans, once united to stand against their common enemies, would eventually begin fighting among themselves, with similar issues already occurring in the Demon Realm. Convinced by her words, the Hero joins forces with the Queen and together they execute a plan to bring prosperity and a lasting peace to both Humans and Demons alike.
The dub
While my voice acting skills are atrocious, I do have relatively decent audio engineering and video editing capabilities and the spare time and dedication to give the series the English dub it never had. I've not participated in a community-scale project like this before, so I'd be aiming to complete the first episode as a test and then follow up with each of the remaining 11 episodes as everyone's time permits. I'd still be intending to finish the project, so keep that in mind when auditioning.
- Should be motivated to want to record and send in lines in relatively timely fashion,
- A decent mic and room is needed. I am an audio engineer by trade so have tools to fix things to an extent, but there's only so much that can be done,
- We'll likely be using something like Discord at some point, so it's recommended, but not essential,
- Helps to have an interest in the show, but not essential if you feel like you want to tackle a character,
- Feel free to add effects or processing to audition. I would be needing unprocessed stems for final thing, though.
The roles below are for the first episode. I'd be adding more as and if the dub progresses.
What kind of Timeline are we looking at here?
I'm actually all ready to go with the first Episode. Scripts for the first six episodes (Here's a sample of episode 1 and episode 2) are prepped and ready for people to read from and I have a voice-free version of the audio tracks for Episode 1 ready to work on. Once we have the voices I think it will come together pretty quickly. I'll be looking to finish the first episode as a test run and then create a new listing here with the cast we've got, and places for the remaining characters.

For those following, Episode 1 is almost complete! We've been cranking away and recording lines, replacing foley and adding in music and it's sounding awesome so far! There'll hopefully be something to share soon. There'll also be a second round of casting once we've completed a few episodes and need some more voices, so be sure to keep an eye out for it!

Thanks so much for all the auditions!
I'm overwhelmed there were so many amazing submissions in such a short time for an Anime series I had considered really niche! I'm still working my way through and finalizing who to cast and figuring out how everything fits together, so apologies if you haven't heard yet. I hope it's okay, but there were some great auditions and if you don't get the part you auditioned for, I may be pinging you a message to ask if you're interested in other character parts that weren't listed this time. Thanks again, and really excited to get started! -
Hero, Senior Maid, Female Knight and Winter King have been cast
Thanks so much for all the auditions so far. The response has been overwhelming and there have been so many fantastic submissions these past two weeks. It's exciting to hear it all coming together. I've just cast the parts of the Hero, Winter King, Senior Maid and Female Knight. If you had auditioned for these parts and were not cast, please considering auditioning for another role - the auditions were amazing and casting decisions were purely down to fitting the character rather than any reflection on the amazing talent from everyone. There are still plenty of characters that need casting and I'd love to hear your takes on them! -
The Demon King has been cast!
Thanks so much for everyone's auditions for the Demon King, they were all so good. I've now closed that role so that we can focus on casting the other important characters. If you had auditioned for her, please consider taking a look at the other characters available. I was blown away by the level of quality of every one and I'd love to still have people involved in the project! There are still some major characters available if you were interested in Maoyu and still want to participate. -
Thanks for all the auditions so far!
I didn't expect it to get this many so quickly. They're all so great, and really excited plugging in mp3s and snippets into the footage I have to see how they all sound. I've updated the description with the scripts for the first two episodes to give a feel for the amount of dialogue involved in the main/supporting characters. I'm hoping to get most of them up and done in the next week or so. I may also add a few extra characters to the casting from episode 2, so make sure to check back! Thanks again for everyone's interest and efforts, I'm really excited to get this cast and get fandubbing!
The narrator has a relatively small but important role of introducing the anime series during the prologue.
Fifteen years have passed since the war between humans and demons began.
The small, frozen nations of the south fought many skirmishes with the demons. The ensuing chaos and destruction brought the people great suffering.
Amidst the nightmarish confusion, a hero arose, and with three companions, he went to defeat the demons.
The Demon King (Maou) is the main female protagonist and the supreme ruler of the Demon Realm. Taking the disguise of a noblewoman known as the Crimson Scholar, she join forces with the Hero and sets off for the Human Realm, and sharing a part of her vast knowledge with the Human society to help improve their civilization.
She has the appearance of a young woman in both Demon and Human form and it would be great to have a voice to match. This is a major part and requires considerable lines.
As I said, I'm the Demon King... (annoyed at being questioned) It's a traditional title. I have no say in it.
Survival requires food. But production is falling short. (concerned) That means hundreds of thousands— No, perhaps even millions, will die.
If the war were to end, win or lose, humanity would be destroyed. That's why they sent you instead of their armies.
The main male protagonist and the greatest warrior of the Human realm. He gives up on his task of slaying the Demon Queen after he is convinced to join her in her efforts to ensure a truly peaceful solution to the war between Humans and Demons by first addressing the issues of both societies that could put them into greater turmoil once the conflict ends.
She has the appearance of a young man.
No hero would accept that deal... You'd have to be some kind of idiot!
(surprised, almost shouting) Do you know what you're saying?! A-Are you sane?
(regret, sorrow) We'd be killing a lot of people.
One of the members of Hero's old party. A powerful swordswoman who also excels as a commander in battle. She is strong willed, confident and highly skilled.
(weary from traveling) Is it okay to tell them the truth?
(angry, swiping a sword) What did you say!?
If we tell them he vanished alone, will everyone assume he got scared and ran? I couldn't bear that happening.
The Senior Maid is the Demon King's most trusted servant and commander of her army. She can be blunt and usually does not refrain from expressing her point of view even to the Demon King. Despite making unflattering comments to her master, she has remained loyal to her ever since they were children.
It'd be great to get a stern, commanding voice. The maid can sometimes come across as cruel, but is usually saying something for the good of the person she's speaking to. She does not appear until the second episode, but is a major character and so is on the casting list.
I'll say it once more... One incapable of determining their own fate is just an insect... I dislike insects... I hate them.
To be attuned to any needs the master may have... That is the Way of the Maid.
(sternly) I said I dislike insects. They're maids now, and no one dislikes maids.
The older of the two young sisters who took refuge at the Crimson Scholar's estate. Coming from a serf family of seven siblings, the sisters' other siblings died from hunger and disease. Due the harsh life of serfdom which their lord treated them like slaves, they escaped and hope to get a better life at the city.
Initially, Older Sister is constantly apologetic and has little sense of self-worth due to her past as a a serf. She has no confidence or self esteem. This changes over the span of the series.
Please stop! My sisters are inside! (pushed aside)
(nervous) Y-You've done so much for us, s-so I feel bad asking... but when morning comes... please don't report us. J-Just give us some time.
I'm sorry for the trouble... we've caused the nobles of this house... I apologize.
The younger of the two young sisters who took refuge at the Crimson Scholar's estate. Coming from a serf family of seven siblings, the sisters' other siblings died from hunger and disease. Due the harsh life of serfdom which their lord treated them like slaves, they escaped and hope to get a better life at the city.
The Younger Sister Maid is a kind-hearted playful girl, though when she first appears she is shy and always hide behind her Older Sister. This changes over the series. The voice should sound like that of a young child.
(distraught) Sisters!!
(eating) Yeah!! It's yummy!
(incredibly excited) She's teaching us letters!.. and Arithmetic!! if we learn it right, we can be rich!
A member of the Hero's old party. After the Hero left his party, she sets for the Demon Realm to look for him and no one has heard from her since then. Upon learning of it, the Hero starts looking for clues about her whereabouts during his travels through the Demon Realm.
The Female Magician can be unpredictable as she has multiple personalities in the form of invisible companions whom only she can see. Her alternate personalities are apparent to others through changes in her voice and tone. Her main personality is that of a girl who wishes to sleep all the time; The second is that of a violent and short-tempered girl. The third is quiet and more level-headed than the others.
(angrily) Damned demons!... There's just no end to them!
(calmly, tactical) Let's stay calm... This merely drains our stamina, with no benefit
(sleepily) Let's just forget it. Sleeping is what makes me ultra happy.
Archer, also known as Butler, is the third member of Hero's old party. He's also the mentor of the Hero, occasionally helping him. He's also a bit of a prankster and obsessed with boobs. He usually treats Hero like a son, while teasing the Female Knight much to her anger.
A wise, older voice with a hint of comedy in it at times.
(having dodged a swipe from a sword) It was only a joke!
We have to tell them what happened.
The Young Merchant is a cold, calculating entrepreneur whose goal is to simply expand his fortune. He uses the Demon King's exploits as a means to. Eventually, he learns from the Hero about his and the Queen's plan and agrees to help them while taking the opportunity to further line his pockets. Very matter-of-fact, and cunning.
A toast to the war! Having the demons as a common enemy has united humanity.
(explaining) Plague and famine are less common now than they have been in the last five hundred years.
(toasting) To the war.
An older, experienced trader. He appears in the second episode and briefly in further episodes
A toast to the war, which brings great wealth to the Central Nations.
A young trader. He appears in the second episode and briefly in further episodes. He is an aid to the Merchant and helps him in negotiations and deals. He has a slightly nervous hint to his character and is generally quiet and reserved.
(nervously) T-To the war.
(heading towards a building for a meeting) That must be it... I wonder what kind of person will be waiting for us.
(taken aback) Can you even sell something like that?
The Winter King presides over the southern kingdom of the Human Realm. Highly educated, he is well respected and wise, looking out for his son. He does not want the war with the Demons, but knows that their kingdom has little choice.
What's wrong, my son?
Our kingdom has no fertile farmland. The huge war funds the Central Nations send us... only come because of the war effort.
Remember, before this war began, we were on the verge of annihilation.
Son of the Winter King, the Winter prince is skeptical about his kingdom's war with the Demons and has second thoughts about his people being used to fight a war.
(troubled) Father... Must we continue to fight the demons? Is it really the right course of action?
(impatient, growing frustrated with the situation) They won't send a Crusade of the Holy Key... but they want us to defeat the demons anyway?
Damn those Centrals!
(anger, almost shouting back) That's not what happened! You dare to insult the Winter King?!
An angry older guy who seems to go around burning down houses of those suspected of spreading 'demonic sickness' and plague. Gruff voice and angry. These are the only lines this guy has.
(angry!) That's why we're burning it down! We can't let the demonic sickness spread.
(fanatic, angry) We can't let the demonic sickness spread.
A student of the Demon King's who specializes in combat and war training. Arrogant, brash and loud he speaks first and thinks later. He appears in the second episode and briefly in further episodes.
But teacher... you can't fight a war by playing with an abacus! (loudly, interrupting the teacher)
Starvation is an excuse used by the weak! (naive, proudly, repeating propaganda)
We fight as soldiers till we're down to the last m-! (proudly, interrupted on the last word)
A student of the Demon King's who specializes in money and trading. Quiet, thoughtful, reserved. Appears in the second episode and later on in the series.
You don't think that wars can't be fought by an abacus? (quiet, thoughtful)
A student of the Demon King's who is a noble. He isn't a bad person, but he is naive to the hardships of people and is arrogant. He appears in the second episode and briefly in further episodes
The people are protected by their lords, so it's impossible for them to starve! (naive, arrogant, out of touch)
I know this! (answering question from teacher)
The Crusade of the Holy Key is a holy army, formed by the Crisis Response Council of the Central Nations.
(explaining/reciting) The Crusades destroyed two important demon cities, but despite their divine blessings, they were unable to capture the capital.
