What is Freak-Quency?
Freak-Quency was originally a free visual novel released in 2014 by Xerofit51. It featured five main love interests, and three different endings. In 2017, Xero and Sakon (one of the VN's artists) started creating a comic based on the game, which has releases on the 6th, 16th and 26th of every month.
In Freak-Quency, you play as Sonnya Gray, a girl searching for her dear brother, Milo. His old phone leads her to the dark side of the Freak-Quency tournament, where she meets various players of this virtual reality game, and ends up getting tangled in the web of drama that comes with it. She also discovers that Milo's old freak, Jackal, has now latched onto her, and intends to kill her if she cannot win in the main tournament, and obtain the medicine that will separate the two. Will she be able to find Milo in time?
How dedicated will I have to be?/What is the expected deadline?
This project plans to dub the entire comic, which currently stands at 29 chapters, and is still in progress. It will likely be going for a long time, and you will have a lot of scripts to record, depending on how often your character appears in the manga.
As for deadlines, you will usually have a maximum of three weeks per script, but this can be adjusted if necessary. I'm fairly flexible, so long as you warn me in advance.
What voices should I use?
While there is some voice acting in the original visual novel, some of the characters had few to no voice lines. As such, you are free to experiment with the voice you use based on the personality of the character.
Any ground rules?
Just to have a discord! We want to be able to keep people together.

Sonnya is the main character of our story, and is a fairly kind, albeit quirky girl. However, she's not afraid to do what she has to in order to get what she wants. When needed, she can fake all sorts of emotions, and use her cute appearance to her advantage. She's also shown to have no problem lying and hiding from her parents. She shares a deep connection with her brother, Milo, which drives her to move forward multiple times within the story. It's also clear that she has some dark past, though she isn't willing to share.
I imagine Sonnya with a fairly young, mid-high range voice. It's also important that you're very expressive, as Sonnya is very vocal with her emotions.
(Starts as narration, turns to excitement by the third sentence) "My brother lives alone in an apartment a few blocks away from his office. Usually he comes to visit me at home, but I guess he's busy at work. He'll be so surprised to see me here! Hehe."
(Faking sadness) "Kai... I thought we were dating, but you're cheating on me with all these girls!? How could you!?"
(Sly, cheeky) "Yes! Ahahaha! Sorry girls, but only the pretty ones get the man. See ya!"
Mary is one of Sonnya's closest friends, and is a side character who appears mainly in the calmer parts of the story. She's a very excitable girl who works for the school newspaper. As such, she knows a lot about the rumours and secrets spreading around the town. She also has an obsession with the teen idol Rie, and is constantly focused on getting tickets to her concerts, or meeting her in person. This can make her do some questionable things, even if her intentions are pure.
As she is quite a happy girl, Mary's voice is fairly higher, and slightly faster paced/prone to rambling. Though, she should still be understandable.
(Rambling, gossiping) "I heard the developer is still up and running, though. They started working on a new game. Seems like they won't go bankrupt just yet." ... "It's the perks of working on the school paper, Sonnya!"
(Starts out as mischievous, devolves into fangirling) "What for, you say...Why...For Rie's limited edition poster and signed album, of course!! My sunshine!"
(Exaggerated sadness, crying by the end of the line) "Rie...I couldn't get tickets for Rie's concert! They were sold out!!"
Lily is Sonnya's other school friend, and is the most mature of the trio. In most of the scenes she is in, Lily is looking after Mary, and keeping her out of trouble (especially when Rie is involved). She is polite, kind and motherly, but with a fun streak. She is a teenager, after all.
I imagine that Lily has a mid-low voice, with a calming tone. However, as she is still only 16, her voice should not be too low.
(Thinking aloud) "I feel like there's a conspiracy behind all this...maybe a rival company who dislikes the competition?"
(Doubtful, sarcastic) "Hmm...She's definitely not all sunshine and smiles like Rie, Mary. There's no way they're the same person."
(Angered, scolding) "Get a hold of yourself, Mary! Sonnya, I'll hold off Mary. You give the girl her stuff back!"
Xero is the most well-known of the three guardians, and is the "face" of Freak-Quency, even in the fake version of the game. She hosts all of the battles, and works closely with Malkav. As of yet, not much is known about her. She seems to be a fairly aloof and laidback girl, with the powers of teleportation. However, when she's hosting a battle, she is incredibly energetic and friendly.
I imagine Xero with a fairly mid-range voice, with a hint of sass to it when speaking normally. When she's presenting, her voice should have a lot more energy to it.
(Announcing) "Good evening everyone! Welcome all Quencies! I'm the lovely Xero, and I'll be your MC for tonight! We have a fierce battle for you. Are you excited? I know I am!"
(Sarcastic, irritated) "The name is Xero, not 'you'."
(Explaining, concerned) "He's been too indiscreet. We may have the cops on our side, but not the press. If people find out what he's doing down there, our boss will have our heads!"
Jackal is Sonnya's freak, passed on from Milo after his disappearance. Despite being quite the deadly force, Jackal is very childish, and even takes on the appearance of a young child when in his human form. Most of the time, his mind is focused on food, or playing games. He also seems to have quite the fondness for Sonnya, even promising to not harm her.
Jackal has three forms, and as such, three voice types:
-His freak voice, which is a lot more fierce, and mid-range. (Line 0)
-His normal human voice, which is fairly high pitched and child-like. (Line 1)
-And his adult human voice, which is a calmer version of his freak voice. (Line 2)
(Angered) "How dare you lay a hand on my human... Get lost!"
(Introducing, happy) "Don't you remember from last night? I'm Jackal! Your devilish knight in black from last night, remember?"
(Excited, cheerful) "Surprise! How do you like my adult form? Pretty cool, right?"
Crystal is one of the first Freak-Quency players Sonnya meets on her journey, and is quite the eccentric girl. As her freak slowly eats away at her sanity, Crystal is completely unhinged for most of the series, and has no problem saying anything to someone's face. In the tournament, she is infamous for being fearless, and brutal.
I think Crystal has a fairly high pitched voice, with a hint of valley girl. She has a lot of energy, and is very expressive, so please reflect that in your audition.
(Introducing) "Let me introduce myself first... I'm Crystal Reed. And this grumpy old lady is my pal... Nana!
(Explaining, cheerful) "They're parasites, right? So each has a preferred diet. Mine devours my sanity, until my head is nothing but mush. So sorry if I'm a bit crazy~"
(Insane, solemn) "I told you before, right? About Freaks and all that jazz. Mine's a mental type. That means little by little I hear more and more voices every day. And sometimes they just outright say the meanest things. Kill this, kill that, hurt him, hurt you. It's all just...insufferable..."
Nana is Crystal's closest friend, and originally Milo's girlfriend. She's a very intimidating girl, who isn't afraid to get what she wants. Nana is consistently harsh on Sonnya for taking Milo away from her, and being the center of his attention. Even so, she doesn't hate those she is close to, and just puts on a serious persona.
I imagine Nana has a fairly low, serious voice, with a gruff undertone. When she's not yelling in anger, her voice is fairly quiet and aloof.
(Enraged) "You! What did you do to Milo!?" ... "Don't act dumb! That was Jackal, Milo's Freak! What did you do to him?! Did you kill him?"
(Explaining, bitter) "An antidote...to separate us from our Freaks. To be free of those pesky parasites."
(Solemn) "I wanted to apologise for what I may have said yesterday. I know I can be a bit...intimidating, to say the least."
Luke is a former Freak-Quency player, who retired after an accident. He now spends most of his time working as a singer in Club Lorentz. He tends to be a fairly flirtatious and outgoing character, but it's public news that he refuses to actually get close to a girl, for some unknown reason. Later on in the story, as Sonnya learns more about him, we see the true Luke; a serious individual, haunted by his past mistakes.
I imagine Luke having a fairly middle range voice, with playful undertones.
(Deep in thought) "Who was that girl? I saw her go with Crystal and Nana...They're not exactly a great crowd to hang around with."
(Introduction) "Call me Luke! I'm the lead singer in the club. I guess we're colleagues now, huh?"
(Regretful) "I shouldn't have fallen in love with her. But I was scared. To this day, I haven't said a word to him. I thought to myself, this is my burden to bear, my punishment. A lifetime of guilt."
Kai is a Freak-Quency player from class 2-E of Sonnya's school. He's a fairly cold and blunt individual, but with a serious sweet tooth. Despite his demeanour, he really does care for the people around him, as shown by his various attempts to protect both Sonnya and Miru.
I imagine Kai with a mid-low range voice, and a very cold, uninterested tone.
(Bored, introducing) "Kai, class 2-E. You did ask for my name, right?"
(Irritated) "Geez, give me a break, will you?! Can't you see I'm trying to sleep?!"
(Calling out, warning) "Sonnya, stop it! You're going to kill her!"
Miru Sanzein, or "Rie" as she's known on stage, is a new Freak-Quency player who joined the tournament at the same time as Sonnya. She starts out fairly cold, but quickly grows to be one of Sonnya's closest friends as the story progresses. She has a very deep attachment to her voice, hence why she hates having her freak so much, and works so hard.
I imagine Miru with a very stereotypical teenage girl voice, at a fairly high pitch. She is very passionate and hard-working, which should be conveyed in her lines.
(Relieved) "Oh my god! You're a lifesaver, thanks! I didn't leave anything else in the store, did I...?"
(Angered) "I get that we were fighting and all, but I wouldn't exploit your worst fears like that! That was dirty!"
(Cocky, sarcastic) "I thought I'd either cheer you on, or watch you get your ass kicked...Whichever comes first."
Zed is a retired Freak-Quency guardian, who now spends most of his time using his freak for stealing, and simply having a good time. He's a very carefree character, with quite the interest in Sonnya. It is later revealed that he is in fact the cafe owner, Ish.
Ish is a very polite and respectful individual, whose kindness to Sonnya is evident from the first moment you see him. As we begin to see his two personas merge later on, we find he's also quite the troublemaker when he wants to be, with a mischievous streak.
Zed's voice is fairly mid range, with a very carefree and cheerful tone. When he is working as Ish (line 2), he should have a much more respectful, calmer tone.
(Ominous, yet still cheerful) "Like puppets on a string, right? Don't worry, my little friend here is a talented puppeteer. Let's give him a warm welcome to the stage, shall we?"
(Teasing) "Hello, little lady~. Nice to see you again! Missed me? I guess that explains why you came running into my arms, huh?"
(Explaining, kind) "I saw Kai messing with you. He can be quite childish at times. It's a thank you for not making a scene and doing a great job for today."
Rick is a member of the police force, who helps the guardians run the Freak-Quency tournament undetected. He's fairly serious and reserved, due to being haunted by the death of his sister. Though, as of now (Chapter 29), he has yet to show his more relaxed, caring side.
I think Rick should have a fairly low and serious voice.
(Commanding) "This is the police! We have you surrounded!"
(Awkward) "Well, I can kinda understand Nana's behaviour...she is his girlfriend, after all."
(Solemn) "...To be honest, I haven't found the answer to that either. I want to say, you'll move on...You'll let him go...But I haven't been able to do the same, myself."
David is the most hidden guardian, as his job tends to deal with the harsher side of things. As an executioner, not only does he clean up after the battles, but he also isn't afraid to harm anyone who threatens him or Freak-Quency's integrity. Despite being fairly quiet, we know that he takes way too much enjoyment in his job, and has a streak of loneliness, due to how he's separated himself from the rest of the guardians.
David likely has a very low, serious voice, with a hint of sarcasm on the more carefree lines. He's also a fairly quiet character, only speaking when necessary.
(Antsy) "Man, Zed's antics just keep giving us more work to do. Sure I'm not allowed to kill him, Mally? Or how 'bout them? Can I get rid of them? I need to let off some steam."
(Sarcastic) "Digging out everyone's secret is Mally's little guilty pleasure."
(Irritated) "And what would you know about that, Zed? You left, remember?"
Shin is the owner of Club Lorentz, and is a fairly polite, yet mysterious individual. Very little is known about him at this point.
Even so, I'd imagine him with a fairly formal, older-sounding voice, in a middle range.
(Explaining) "Yes, I remember that clearly. You were my golden girl, after all. And your friend here is definitely one of the prettier ones."
(Serious, irritated) "The glasses that broke weren't exactly cheap, though. I'll make sure that woman pays three times their worth."
Suzanne is the nurse at the hospital where Sonnya often ends up, and also spends a lot of time at Club Lorentz, where her husband works. As of yet, not much is known about her, but she seems to be quite the charming woman.
I imagine her with a fairly low, and perhaps even flirtatious voice. Though, she would be far more formal when working (Line 0).
(Relieved) "Ah, you're awake. Your friend was starting to worry, you know."
(Playful) "Oh, wait... I remember you. Yes, the one with the pink-haired girl, right? My, my. You're a magnet for trouble, aren't you?

There are various one off characters in Freak-Quency, such as during the battle scenes and in town. Most of the main cast will be voicing extras, but it would be nice to get some variety too. However, there is one recurring extra role that I will need someone to carry out: Sonnya's mother (Line 0).

(Stern, serious) "Look after the house, okay? Your dad and I are going to file a report with the police and ask around. Someone might've heard something we haven't."
(Flirting) "Hey Kai, what are you doing after this? Wanna come with us? We're going to a karaoke bar!"
(Young, confused girl) "Huh? That girl...she disappeared."
