Mad Father ENG Dub
Project Overview
Mad Father is an indie game made within the Wolf RPG Editor by Sen (The Miscreant's Room). It is a game in which a young girl named Aya reminisces about her mother who died of sickness a few years previous. On the eve of her mother's death, when the sun has rested and the vengeful moonlight now rests on the old manor of the Drevis residence, she visits her father's laboratory and wishes to celebrate the day of her mother's death.
He agrees and dismisses her to bed. At the stroke of midnight, a scream originating from Aya's father pierces through the once silent house and fear rushes through the young girl as she discovers that corpses are loitering throughout her home. Will the dead that roam the manor engulf Aya? Will she cower and escape the mansion with the family assistant, Maria? Or will she carry on and save her father, realizing that she has made a drastic mistake that cannot be undone...

Robin - initially referred to as just the "Blonde-Haired Boy" - is a major character in the game, and is initially believed to be one of the test subjects revived during Monika's curse. Throughout Aya's adventure, Robin tries to get her to come with him so that they can flee from the mansion together.
Robin is shown to be a rather stoic young man, and is rather mature for his age. It's likely this is due to an incident in his past, which resulted in the death of his parents and his sister, which forced him to look at life a little differently. Robin appears to love his departed family dearly - especially his little sister, whom he regrets being unable to save - as he did not wish to view Alfred or Aya as replacements for them.
In spite of his maturity, Robin is shown to have some naivety. When he first tries to get Aya to follow him, he never considered the possibility that Aya would be afraid of him upon noticing he was missing an eye, though after that happens, he makes sure to cover up his empty eye socket with bandages. An Old Man also implies that he's too trusting towards Monika, who he thinks is simply using the young boy to further her own agenda.
Robin is shown to be very determined and focused on his goals, as he promised a sleeping Aya that he would do his best to protect her and her family. After he gets revived by Monika and asked to escape the mansion with Aya during the anniversary of Monika's death, he does what he can to try and do so, warning Aya of the dangers and trying to convince her that her quest to save her father is pointless. At the game's climax, he asks Aya to never forget the people that suffered under Alfred, as all of them were ignored and forgotten by the world at large.
IF Mode reveals that, while his revival has nothing to do with Monika's curse - since he was revived before that - he chooses to have Aya and Maria believe that it is, as he feels if they knew the truth, they would make him pay. He also doesn't want to drag them down since they're trying to move forward with their lives. This may imply he doesn't think too highly of himself.

"There's no need for a "replacement." But when I see your innocence, it makes me want to protect you. I'll keep protecting you and your family, Aya. You can count on that."
Alfred Drevis is the husband of Monika Drevis and the father of Aya Drevis, serving as both the person who needs to be rescued, as well as the primary antagonist. He is a mad scientist who has been turning people into dolls alongside his assistant, Maria. Once his late-wife comes back from the dead as a vengeful ghost, his daughter goes on a quest to save him.
Alfred is a psychopath who is obsessed with preserving beauty by making dolls out of living humans. He tends to lure in unsuspecting people with promises of goodwill and intention, such as taking in homeless people or asking someone to work for him and his family. Once they take the bait, He'll treat them kindly for a bit before eventually revealing his true colors, after which he'll use them to perform his horrific experiments.
Even during his youth, Alfred was not a good person. He often killed small animals for fun, which his mother disapproved of. When he finally grew tired of her lectures, he decided to silence her with a kitchen knife. Afterwards, he wiped the blood off of her face, upon which he noticed how pretty her dead face looked. This event would lead him into his obsession with preserving beauty.
In spite of his cruelty, he'll often spare people whom he finds either "helpful" or "useful." His wife is one such person, as she owned a large estate and mansion, as well as her grandfather's research into turning humans into dolls, the latter which fed into his obsession. Another one would be Maria, his assistant. He intended to turn her into a doll, but decided to keep her alive when he found out how good her medical skills are. However, once he's finished with them, or if they happen to do something that he perceives as a slight against him, Alfred will nonchalantly kill them in cold blood.
Despite the overwhelming macabre personality, there is a surprisingly lighter side to him. Though he did kill his own mother, it's made quite clear Alfred loved her as any son would. While trying to raise his daughter, he began to notice Aya appeared to be going down the same path he did when he was a child. Not wanting her to turn out like he did, he attempted to raise her to be good while teaching her right from wrong.
The mad doctor is also implied to have a dark sense of humor. During his chase with Aya, Alfred rather childishly attempted to scare his daughter by shouting "Boo!" when he managed to open the door slightly, before he fully busted it open. He also viewed their chase as nothing more than a game of tag.
One diary entry implies that there is a part of Alfred that regrets how he turned out, though beyond trying to raise Aya to be good, he makes no effort to better himself.

"By making you a doll, your beauty can last forever! Look at these children! Beautiful, yes? Preserved just as they were when alive! These are the fruits of the Drevis family research!"
Monika Drevis - also referred to as simply "Aya's Mother" in the Japanese version - is the late wife of Alfred Drevis and Aya Drevis's mother She serves as the game's main antagonist. She passed away about a year ago before the events of the game and has come back as a vengeful spirit.
Monika is initially portrayed as a kind and forgiving woman who tends to overlook the mistakes of others, often trying to see the good in everyone. Following her death, she became a vengeful spirit hellbent on getting her revenge, even reviving the victims of her husband to do so.
In truth though, Monika is not as innocent as she appears. She can be quite manipulative and can easily read people's hearts. During her youth, she often sends letters to various killers, asking them to tell her about the various murders they committed. She was also quite fascinated by her grandpa's research into turning people into dolls, and couldn't understand why her aunt was against it, as she thought that what her family was doing would allow people to leave more of a mark on the world.
In spite of this, her love for her family seems to be genuine. Monika's diary reveals that she adored her grandparents and didn't want to disappoint either of them despite both of them wishing different things for her. While Monika was alive, she frequently doted on her daughter Aya. She even tried to prevent Aya from learning the truth of her death, only relenting when her daughter chose to save Alfred instead of letting her take her husband away with her to the afterlife. On the flipside, Monika had no problem trying to groom Aya into becoming a cruel individual so that she could carry on the legacy of Monika's grandfathers, though Monika did allow her to grow up rather freely.
Monika is also quite in love with her husband Alfred and was deeply hurt when she discovered he was cheating on her with the family maid, Maria, though she never confronted the two about it. However, once she learned that Alfred planned on turning Aya into a doll in order to preserve her innocence, she threatened to leave with Aya in tow, which resulted in Alfred killing her. In spite of that, she admits to Aya that she still loves Alfred and couldn't bring herself to kill him.
Monika also appears to have been a good cook, occasionally cooking Aya's favorite: hamburger steak (in the original/2.02 version) or sirloin steak (in the 2020 remake.) Monika is also implied to have an interest in charms. A book Aya can find called the "Charm Encyclopedia" talks about casting good luck on someone by kissing them on the forehead and saying a blessing, which she is shown doing to both Aya and Robin in certain parts of the game's story. Said book also has another chapter (only seen in Blood Mode) about birthing a boy, which implies that Monika hoped to have a son instead.

"Rest easy, Aya. I'll be supporting him... Eternally, in the afterlife!"
Maria is a major character in the game, serving as the family maid, as well as the personal assistant and lover of Alfred Drevis. Maria is very loyal to Alfred, and is willing to risk her life to save him from his late-wife, Monika Drevis, who has returned as a vengeful ghost.
Maria is a very kindhearted woman who's most notable trait is her trust and loyalty. She becomes fully devoted to those that show her kindness and treat her well, regardless of what kind of individual the person may be. This is due to her feeling unwanted and unloved for most of her life. However, if one betrays her trust, Maria loses all loyalty she had to the one who betrayed her.
Maria's diary reveals that she's a bit insecure about her eyes, as she notes that a young boy ran away crying upon seeing her face. She also notes that Aya seems to be scared of her as well ever since their first meeting, though she also mentions the possibility that the young mistress simply hates her after the young girl found out about the affair the maid has been having with Alfred, Aya's father.
As revealed in the 2020 remake, one of Monika's hobbies appear to be dart-throwing, as she has a dartboard in her room. It's very possible that this hobby of hers has helped improve her frightening accuracy and deadly precision when she throws knives at faraway individuals.
Despite being the family maid, Maria's character profile describes her as a freeloader, which may imply she only really serves Alfred when he requires her assistance, and mostly loafs around otherwise.

"You'd ask me that after all this time...? My resolve has not budged one bit since that night. I shall accompany you anywhere, mistress."
Ines is one of Alfred Drevis's test subjects, and a minor reoccurring character. Aya encounters her upon arriving at the Basement 3F.
Ines is a mischievous and playful individual who has a tendency to giggle. She seems to like animals, as she's seen attempting to befriend a mouse at one point in the game.
Ines also has a strong desire to be a part of Aya's family, possibly due to being an orphan for most of her life.

"...I just wanted to be part of your... family..."
Ogre is a mysterious individual who plays a supporting role in the game. He claims to be a wandering salesman, and assists Aya every now and then during her quest to save her father.
Ogre is initially presented as an eccentric-yet-polite individual who manages to maintain a calm demeanor in spite of the insanity happening throughout the mansion. He's shown to be concerned about Aya's safety, and is willing to assist the young girl in her quest to rescue her father, though he prefers to do so by pointing her in the right direction rather than fully guiding her.
In reality, Ogre is a man who enjoys observing chaos unfold around him, and especially loves watching the various antics of foolish humans. While he mostly kept his distance whenever such events occurred, Ogre decided to take part in the madness happening in the Drevis Mansion to further entertain himself, though he keeps his involvement to a bare minimum, as he doesn't want to put focus on himself.
That isn't to say he's pure evil, as Ogre does hold a soft spot for kindhearted humans, thinking that the world would be boring if only lunatics ran about, as well as believing that heroes allow lunatics to really shine. In addition, his polite demeanor doesn't appear to be a facade, as he still maintains a friendly attitude even after revealing his character and his motives - or rather, the lack a motive - to Robin.
Ogre appears to have supernatural powers, specifically teleportation. It's also suggested he has the power to shapeshift as well, though this ability isn't seen in the game.

"Oh, no need to be so wary. I'm merely a salesman. Call me Ogre. I hope to get to know you, young lady."
Maria is a major character in the game, serving as the family maid, as well as the personal assistant and lover of Alfred Drevis. Maria is very loyal to Alfred, and is willing to risk her life to save him from his late-wife, Monika Drevis, who has returned as a vengeful ghost.
Maria was once a homeless vagrant living out on the streets. She was lying on the roads, feebly begging for someone to bring her some food. Alfred Drevis happened to be walking down the same street she was currently occupying, and upon noticing her, thought she would make an excellent doll with some work. Maria was then invited to come live with him in his mansion in order to receive some good food and clothes.
Maria was then asked to stay in one of the jail cells, as Alfred said he wanted to introduce her to his wife and his daughter - who was about to turn seven - later on. Once Alfred left, she quickly spotted her roommate, and wondered if he too was taken in like her. Noticing he had grave injuries, she used what she could find, as well as her own shirt, to patch his wounds. The next day, her efforts to save her roommate impressed Alfred. Not wanting to let her talents go to waste, he offered to let her become his assistant. Having never felt wanted, needed, or loved before, Maria accepted his offer without a second thought.
From then on, Maria became fully devoted to Alfred, helping him turn other people he found into dolls. This devotion would soon turn into love, and the maid would begin having an affair with him behind his wife's back. In turn, Alfred lets Maria know about his plans to turn his own daughter into a doll, as he fears Aya is making the same mistakes he did in his youth and will turn out to become just as cruel as he is.
During this time, Maria would also try to get to know about the other members of Alfred's family better. However, Aya wasn't fond of her, due to thinking Maria's eyes looked creepy. It's unknown what Monika's initial thoughts on her were, but it soon became strained when she found out that her husband was cheating on her with Maria. From that point onward, Monika began to try and avoid the maid, if not outright ignore her. Aya would also start thinking less of Maria as well, though she was more willing to put up with her.
About a year before the events of the game, Maria notes to Alfred about how Aya has become more ladylike, with Alfred noting that once she's "a little riper," they'll turn her into a doll. Unbeknown to them, Monika had overheard their conversation. While Maria was off cleaning up the "unnecessary materials," Monika confronted Alfred about this, which results in the mad man stabbing her in the chest, killing her. Upon returning, Maria rushes over to Monika begging her to hang on. Upon asking Alfred why he killed her, he simply responds that he did so "for Aya's future." He then instructs her to lie to Aya about Monika's death and claim she passed away from her illness. Maria briefly hesitates on doing this, but ultimately agrees to do so.

"You want..me to help?"
Aya receives an odd-colored apple from a mysterious old woman in a black hood, and eagerly shows it to Maria. Despite her assistant's warnings, Aya decides to take a bite from it and passes out. When she awakens, she discovers she's back in the Drevis Mansion, during the night of her mother's curse. Ogre reveals to her that her soul is trapped in a world created by Alfred's lingering feelings for her, and that if she wishes to wake up, she has to get to the source and make peace with him.
As Aya relives key moments from the event, the ghost of Jean Rooney occasionally pops up, and even attempts to drown her at one point. Eventually, Jean's ghost confronts Aya and asks her why she killed her, revealing that she aspired to become a doctor to help others just like Aya. Aya never gives her a response, though it's somewhat implied that she's shaken by what Jean said. Aya then continues her trip throughout the Drevis Mansion.
Additionally, Aya finds out some dark secrets about her mother as well. While coming across her Charm Encyclopedia, she finds an additional chapter that talks about increasing the odds to birth a boy, implying she wanted to have a son instead. Much later, she learns that Monika wasn't exactly sane during her youth, as she enjoyed writing letters to various killers and murderers to learn more about them. Monika was also part of a cult that was led by her grandfather, who's dream of creating "eternal beauty" led to the discovery of turning people into dolls. Monika was eager to continue his work until her grandmother told her that "true beauty" was leaving descendants for the future. Not wanting to disappoint either of them, she decided to compromise their separate wishes and give birth to her daughter, Aya, whom she planned to have continue her grandfather's legacy.
Eventually, she confronts her father's lingering will at the Secret Room, who attempts to kill Aya to turn her into a doll just like how the original attempted. Though Aya does flee, she briefly relents upon arriving at the Chapel, having decided to let Alfred kill her so that she could be reunited with him and Monika. However, upon hearing Maria's voice, she realizes she'd be leaving her all alone. Thus, she uses the Magic Water she obtained from Monika's ghost earlier and uses it on her father. She then tells him that she now understands why he wanted to turn her into a doll. However, she wants to continue to live, due to all that she experienced long ago, saying that she can't forget it no matter how hard she tries, claiming it must be part of the curse of the Drevis family. Before her soul leaves and returns to her body, Alfred's lingering will wish Aya to be happy with her life.
Back in her clinic, Aya wakes up to see Maria sitting nearby. The brunette scolds Aya for acting so hastily, before vowing to terminate the old woman who gave Aya that poisoned apple. Aya tells her there's no need, as she's certain that the old woman was actually a death god who sought to deliver karma to her. Admitting that they likely couldn't escape no matter how hard they try, Aya resigns herself to whatever fate has in store for her. She then asks if Maria would still stay by her side in spite of everything. Maria confirms that she's just as loyal to her as she was long ago, so Aya gives her assistant a smile.

"You have really pretty eyes."
The Eyeless Girl was one of Alfred Drevis's test subjects who Aya meets as she explores the Basement 2F.
Not much of her past is known. At some point, she was taken in by the Drevis family, where she was later killed by Alfred as he took her eyes.

"CAN'T SEE... CAN'T SEE... CAN'T SEE ANYTHING... THAT MAN TOOK AWAY MY EYES!"
The Old Man is a minor character in Mad Father. There are two distinct old men in the game, but this one has more importance to the game's plot, especially in IF Mode.
The Old Man was taken in to be a servant for the Drevis family, and appeared to enjoy his time there. However, he soon discovered that the family enjoyed taking in weak or homeless people and turning them into dolls afterwards. The Old Man, now realizing who he's working for and fearing for his life, planned to escape in secret and manages to flee as far away as he could. However, Monika Drevis had managed to discern that their servant did not approve of what they were doing and learned of his escape plans. Thus she chased him down and killed him.

"Curse that youngster... Doing everything the woman says... And so deceived as to not realize her true nature... That woman's going to create a demon. She's even crazier than the doctor!"
The Mourning Mother is one of Alfred Drevis's test subjects who Aya meets early on in her quest, and Collina's mother.
It can be assumed that the mother and her daughter, Collina, moved in to live with the Drevis family, with the mother becoming a servant. At some point, Dr. Alfred uses her daughter to test out some new medicine he made, presumably without the mother's knowledge, which results in a violent end for Collina. It can be assumed the mother eventually learned of this, though was unable to avenge her daughter, and was presumably killed and turned into a doll afterwards.

"Give back my daughter..."
Jean Rooney is a poor girl who hails from a faraway village. She only shows up in Normal Mode's True Ending, though she is given a more prominent role in the 2020 remake's Blood Mode.
Jean is shown to a sweet and energetic young woman, if somewhat shy. She blushed when Aya noted how beautiful her green eyes are, noting that no one has ever complimented her before. Additionally, Jean notes to herself how beautiful Aya looks upon their first meeting. She also aspires to become a doctor in hopes of curing people afflicted with her illness.
Following her death, she begins to haunt Aya's soul once it arrives in the dimension that acts as a recreation of the infamous night that changed Aya's life. While mostly staying out of sight and/or reach, Jean does attempt to drown Aya at one point. However, despite that one incident, it's implied that Jean is very reluctant to actually kill Aya, which seems to be further supported by the fact that one of her CG shots is titled "Reluctance".

"I have a dream, you know. I want to be a doctor like you. I want to help people suffering from the same illness as me. Do you think I can do that...?"
Collina is one of Alfred's test subjects who Aya meets early on in her quest to rescue her father.
Collina and her mother moved in to live with the Drevis family, her mother presumably hired as a servant. Eventually, Dr. Alfred had his assistant Maria fetch the young girl to test out some new medicine he made on her. Collina begged the two to let her go and take her back to her mother, to no avail. After getting injected with the medicine, Collina's life began to violently fade away as her skin turned light blue and her eyes went blank.

YOU WON'T PASS
The Headless Man is one of Alfred Drevis's test subjects, who Aya later finds as she explores the Basement 1F.
Not much is known of his past. It can be presumed he was taken in to live with the Drevis family before he was eventually killed by Alfred via beheading.

"WH-ERE IS BO-DY..."
The Hungry Boy is one of the subjects of Alfred Drevis that Aya meets while exploring the Basement 3F.
Not much is known about his past. His mother used to cook him either ham (in the original/2.02 version) or sausages (in the 2020 remake), which was his favorite meal. After she passed away, he was mostly ignored by everyone until he was taken in by Alfred Drevis.
However, things didn't improve for him. The other people Alfred took in were getting food, but not him. It can be presumed he eventually died of starvation and neglect rather than Alfred killing him.
As Aya tries to follow Maria, who went on ahead to try and rescue Alfred, Aya comes across the starving boy in the Basement 2F Cafeteria, who wasn't there during her initial visit to the room. Talking to him has him tell the young girl he's starving.
Heading into the next room, Aya decides to take some time from her quest to cook either ham (in the original/2.02 version) or a sausage (in the 2020 remake) for the young boy. Returning with plate in hand, she gives it to the boy, and he happily eats it, proclaiming it tastes just like how his mother makes it.
However, after finishing the meal, he claims that it might not have been exactly up to his mother's standards, but it was still good. He then thanks her, since he hasn't eaten anything in ages. When Aya points out that Maria tended to bring food down to the basement, he responds that he never got any, revealing that he was always unwanted and was of no use to anyone.
Before he leaves, he gives Aya a napkin as thanks before disappearing.

"So... hungry."
Aya's Doll is a minor character in the game who, as the name suggests, is a doll owned by Aya Drevis.
From what little is shown, Aya's Doll is portrayed as a rather wise individual. Though she tries to get her owner to leave Alfred to his fate (after Aya learns and witnesses the many atrocities he committed), and even attempts to convince Robin to journey with Aya and Maria, she never tries to push them into following her suggestions. This implies she wants others to make their own decisions, regardless of how good or bad they are.
Despite her being one of Alfred's test subjects, she doesn't assist the others in seeking revenge against him, though she's certainly not against the mad doctor getting his just desserts.
