Knight's Dawn

Project Overview

The State of Affairs

The blacksmith’s hammer strikes an anvil, shaping heated metal to his will. He seeks to realize a new design to his signature armor. A design that has gone unchanged for nearly a century, passed along by his father, and his father before him.

The battlefield is changing, a new weapon has emerged. With a flash of smoke and fire, sends an unstoppable volley towards the unfortunate souls on the receiving end.

These are times of change. To some, a new dawn, to others, a dark eclipse.

In the forgotten crevices of this world, relics of the past sleep. A past long since forgotten, but not absent.

There will be a collision of the new world, and the old world. Both will shatter the present, either waking these peoples, or destroying them entirely.

Where Are We?

The City of Seight-Elen, the once thriving center of the Kingdom of Galisia. An unprecedented series of events have left the Kingdom in a fragile state. Lords, merchants, and nobles all maneuver to secure their own power, even at the expense of the stability of the Kingdom.

Stability is a luxury in short supply, as a young heiress is placed upon the throne. Men and women of power eye the Kingdom closely, ambitions stirring within them. Internal and external players eager to take a piece of what is left.

The fate of the Kingdom will be determined in these next few months.

The Nations

The Kingdom of Galisia. A feudal monarchy nestled by the strong arms of a large protective Mountain range and the calming blue waters of the Western Sea. The crisis has left the Royal Family and the Kingdom exposed to enemies within and abroad.

The Ataphre Empire. An empire that controls numerous regions and countless cultures. A Diarchy ruled by two divine families, they are ever eager to expand their empire. This Empire unfortunately is a neighbor to Galisia, kept at bay by clever political maneuvering and the vast mountain ranges. However, the crisis of Galisia has left the Kingdom exposed.

The Dorina Merchant Republics. A Republic based on the merchant & landowning classes of the semi-independent city states. Three heads of government are elected each year by the citizen-electorate. The Republic connects most of the known world through trade & various institutions, generating immense wealth. Possessing a strong merchant fleet, the oceans belong to her. As an old rival to the Ataphre, she is eager to prevent the spread of their influence.

The Final Bounty

Jaster Whitelock, an experienced bounty hunter, is offered a deal he cannot refuse. If he can complete this final job, alongside his apprentice, he will have restored what he lost. Such a dangerous target during such dangerous times will prove his most difficult task yet.

Background

However, with Jaster being from an unlanded & unremarkable family, he was not able to progress far. He spent many years watching others be elevated to higher honors and achievements. Many of these honors bestowed based on family name, as opposed to merit.

Jaster Having fond memories of capturing bandits and criminals during his household guard ventures, he began to take bounties. This was against his oath as a Knight, which was promptly noted by others. Eventually coming to a head when he renounced his Knighthood. Under normal circumstances, this would have been an act of treason and the King intended to treat it as such.

However, due to his personal friendships with many notable lords of the Kingdom, he was allowed to leave on certain conditions. One such term of his resignation is that he must take any bounty the Royal Family asks of him. The King often assigned him the most dangerous bounties, hoping they would be the end of him.

While narrowly avoiding exile, or worse, Jaster's family quickly lost what little fortune they had. The Whitelock name had become associated with distrust and suspicion among many. When an opportunity to restore his family's place came calling, he would not turn it down.

Personality/Voice

Jaster puts on the persona of a powerful strongman. However, he has wisdom and experience that sets him apart from others in his field. He often struggles between his arrogance and his humbling from the Royal Family. Despite the persona, Jaster is slower to act than most, having learned to not let his emotions affect him as much. Just beneath his surface, there is a sense of desperation for something more, and a slight spark of hope.

Background

One of the few survivors from the island City-State of Rota. Rota was once the powerful rival of the Merchant Republics. However, it was the opinion of both the world only had room for one. Fortune did not favor Rota, after a series of devastating land and naval defeats, the city of Rota itself came under siege and blockade.

After a grueling 10 month siege, much of the city was ruined. Both sides had taken massive loses and the frustration of the Republic grew. Many dispute what happened next, but rumors have circulated of a great and terrible weapon being unleashed upon Rota. Many speculate on what this weapon was, or if there even was a weapon.

Regardless of the method, the end result was the same. The city of Rota was utterly devastated. Her armies destroyed, her fleets reduced to ash, her people scattered and leaderless. The wealth that was once the envy of the world was no more.

The Republic, content in the results, left the city as a ruin. A few survivors emerged, and some managed to escape. These few desperate souls arrived on the shores of the Kingdom of Galisia. Despite taking pity upon them, the Kingdom was not able to save most of them. Many perishing from wounds and illnesses that even the best physicians had never seen.

After a few weeks, only one survivor remained. An infant girl, the last of this group of refugees. She was named after a small locket she arrived with. Her true name was either lost in translation or simply not passed along in time. The previous king saw her enrolled into the Royal Academy as an act of piety.

The new King, lacking the piety and empathy of his father, noticed an opportunity to insult his least favorite former Knight, assigning her to Jaster Whitelock. On the surface, this allowed the King to appear altruistic, granting a poor orphan girl a chance at glory. In actuality, it was meant as an insult to Jaster, assigning him a low-born orphan girl from a foreign country.

However, Jaster found his new apprentice to be quite sharp, and quick to learn.

  • But ... they are peasants, their stories tend to be … embellished. They see two dozen bandits with pig iron, and they’ll call it an army. I’ve sent word to Rotenok, asking how they plan to handle this crisis.
