Project Overview
The Hub Community presents Katanagatari Abridged.
Katanagatari (translates to Sword Story) is a story about swords. It contains the adventure of the swordless swordsman Shichika Yasuri and his navigator/companion Togame as they travel across “Feudal” Japan collecting the twelve powerful Deviant Blades from (mostly) strong opponents. However, swordless swordsman Shichika is in for more than he bargained for as he finds out the truth about the power of these blades along with the world around him.
The tone will be a mix of silliness with seriousness, both poking fun at the original while also reveling in its absurdities. The plot will be heavily character driven, often through banter or humor. There will be instances of swearing between the characters, though nothing overly excessive. Likely, it will have 12 episodes to match the anime’s original 12, unless plans change of course.
If you are casted for this project, you MUST join the Hub Community Discord server, as it will make communication much easier for everyone involved in the project. Those already in the server will be prioritized for casting over those who are not. If you are in the server and your CCC account is not the same as your Discord username, please comment on your audition what your Discord username is. It is not guaranteed that you will not be casted if you are not in the server, but you will not be favored over those are already in the server.

VOICE RANGE: Mid
PERSONALITY: Country hick who hates the outside world and is easily angered
EXTENT: Will be a main protagonist throughout the course of the series.
BIO: Shichika Yasuri, the seventh head of the Kyotouryuu style.
Being born and raised on an isolated island for most of his life, the only knowledge of the outside world he had came from his father. After his father’s death by his own hands, Shichika lived alone with his sickly, older sister Nanami for the next few years. Upon the arrival of Togame’s quest for the 12 deviant blades, Shichika finally experienced the outside world. And he loathed it. Constantly agitated by the inconsistencies and hypocrisy of the rest of the world, Shichika always finds himself on the verge of blowing a fuse, usually around the time that one of the Deviant Blade holders shows up.
Shichika is a very stubborn person, tolerating little bullshit and being weirded out by most everything. His Kyotouryuu forbids him from being able to properly wield a sword, and as a result, he finds them lame. Despite his isolated upbringing, Shichika finds himself as the hero through his sheer dedication to find and collect the deviant blades, to keep them out of the wrong hands.
[Simple, talking to an unconscious Togame] Hey. You okay there? (Pause) If you want to be eaten, don’t say anything. (Pause) Looks like I found dinner!
[Confused] Wait, what do you mean they aren’t all swords? How do you have blades that aren’t swords? How does that even work?
[Furious, completely berserk] We’re in Feudal Japan! How the fuck do you have guns?! How are none of you even questioning this shit?!
VOICE RANGE: Mid to High
PERSONALITY: Calm and considerate, accepting of her absurd environment
EXTENT: Will be a main protagonist throughout the course of the series.
BIO: Togame, the Army General Director in Support of Critical Tasks Under Direct Control of Yanari Shogun of the Owari Shogunate (self-titled).
Having witnessed the decapitation of her father, Togame seeked solace in some form. Through her climbing of rank within the Shogunate, Togame found herself to be the Strategian of the Shogun, due in no small part to her keen intellect and questionable methods. To solidify her position as the Shogun’s second-in-command, Togame embarked on a quest to gather the 12 Deviant Blades and hold them firmly in the hand of the Shogunate. As part of her journey, she meets Shichika who reluctantly joins on her adventure.
Togame is a very composed individual, having learned from years of maintaining some form of exterior calmness to mask the true amount of suffering within her heart. Her intellect knows no bounds as she basically functions as a walking encyclopedia. She provides the brains and composure to Shichika’s brute and rage. Togame can also come off as arrogant at times, due to bragging of her constant successes. She has good intentions but her tattered heart can lead her astray in her judgement at times.
[Explaining something really absurd nonchalantly] Shichika, you have to be careful. You see that armor? That’s the Deviant Blade Yoroi. Its piercing ability beats that of any other armor. Yes, I know no other armor can pierce.
[Calming down Shichika] Okay Shichika, let’s take it down about three pegs, maybe four. Deep breaths. Just take it easy. (Continues calming him down)
[Passive aggressive, Sarcastic] Oh sure, Shichika. Let’s just throw all of my well-thought strategies out the window so that you can just punch her in the face.
VOICE RANGE: Mid to High
PERSONALITY: Very reserved and monotone, as if bored
EXTENT: Will be a recurring character throughout the series.
BIO: Nanami Yasuri, the sickly Yasuri.
Having been plagued with severe illness from a young age, Nanami was constantly in pain, always coming close to death but never quite reaching it. Through somehow never succumbing to death, her existence became an enigma. Even her father realized that something lied deep within her that he dare not trifle with. As a direct result of this judgement, Nanami was cast aside as the heir to the Kyotouryuu style in favor of her younger brother Shichika. Nanami would constantly watch his training from the trees and bushes, secretly striving to participate but knowing that her body would not be able to withstand it. Her inner flames slowly burned, hoping to one day engulf.
Nanami is a very reserved individual, often saying little but making big marks with whatever she says. She appears insightful, towering over her younger yet more prominent brother in knowledge, especially of the outside world. She seems to have a deep understanding of the dynamic between her and her brother to the point where nothing phases her. Her demeanor is often unwavered and potentially even callous. She seems to not fear death, as it is what she has seeked for her whole life.
[Casual, disappointed] You were supposed to bring back food, not a person. We can’t eat her. She probably doesn’t even taste good.
[Intimately recalls this moment] Let me tell you a bit about my brother… A long time ago he had a habit of biting his fingernails. It wasn’t elegant but he wouldn’t listen and kept biting them. His thumb became all ragged after a while. So one day I tore out all his nails. Ever since then, he’s never bitten them.
[Fetishizing crushing weeds] Is it wrong for me to enjoy crushing weeds? Watching them wither and die? Watching them struggle helplessly for life as I continue to step on them? Is it really that wrong?
VOICE RANGE: Mid to High
PERSONALITY: Sporadic and arrogant
EXTENT: Will be a recurring character throughout the series.
BIO: Komori of the Maniwa Corps Beast Squad.
Disliked by his peers, Komori is a loose canon vigilante of the Maniwa Ninja Corps. He often goes out on his own providing his own irrational view of heroism, through blowing up houses of supposed “villains” and killing innocent civilians. In his spare time, he is a babysitter.
Komori is an extremely egotistical maniac whose words are riddled with dark innuendo and punctuated through his off putting cackle. He names all of his attacks and often refers to himself by his complete name, including the “of the Maniwa Ninja Corps” part. His personality is in no small part due to his tragic backstory. It all started when he was young…
Also, he can swallow swords and other miscellaneous items.
[Protagonist banter] Foolish villain! I am Komori of the Maniwa Ninja Corps, and I will be your end!
[Mispronouncing Shichika’s name] Are you ready for my signature attack, Shichi- Shichi- (Keeps mispronouncing it before giving up) Ugh. Shish kabob!
[Intimidating followed by a cackle] With my unbreakable sword, the only thing that’ll be breaking… is you!! (Laughs maniacally)
