Jurassic Park: Critical Mass [Audio Drama]

Jurassic Park: Critical Mass [Audio Drama]

Project Overview

JURASSIC PARK: CRITICAL MASS is an audio drama about a group of hunters who have been hired by a tycoon to sail to Isla Sorna ("Site B"), kill specific dinosaurs, and bring their bodies back as trophies to be taxidermied. However, things quickly begin to fall apart as their group falls prey to fear... and its physical manifestations on the forsaken island.

The story largely explores the effect of fear and how it can cause people to change.

ACCENT: British

Burbridge is an Englishman who makes a living hunting/poaching in Kenya, Africa. While there is no official leader of the group, he has essentially taken on the role, and most of the other men respect him, though he clashes with Koontz. Despite his questionable career, Burbridge is very much a gentlemen and cares for the people he works with. He served in the British Royal Army, however when he was ordered to leave two wounded friends behind on the battlefield, he became disillusioned with his Country, and moved to Kenya. He tends to have a patriarchal care for the other hunters he works with... but this care will soon be put to the test.

Burbridge is highly inspired by the character of Roland Tembo in "The Lost World: Jurassic Park," and I'm looking for similar deliveries. Especially in the script where it indicates "(Not skipping a beat)", I'm imagining a delivery very similar to his "speech" to Ludlow, which can be viewed on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seCERpBIcSo

  • "(Calmly) Mr. Koontz... Be a good chap now and let Graham go... or the next bolt won't be a warning shot... and we'll see how tough you are against a pack of your precious raptors without a "marble sack" to guide you."

  • "(not missing a beat) Well it seems that's about when your maturity came to a screeching halt, as you seem entirely too fixated on trying to prove your tallywacker is much bigger than it probably is."

  • "(sternly/annoyed) I don't have anymore answers than either of you, and ultimately it doesn't matter right now. What matters is that we need to move. (darkly) There are tyrannosaur tracks not far up the river. Fairly fresh. It would be unwise of us to stay in one place too long. (sternly) Now move."

Koontz is the walking definition of "toxic masculinity." He talks a big talk and thinks of himself as the greatest hunter/predator on the planet, unequaled... except by one: velociraptors. He's goal on Isla Sorna is to face down a raptor and come out as the victor, because then, he believes, he can truly be THE greatest predator on the planet. He butts heads VERY frequently with other members of the group, especially Graham—who's a jokester, and Koontz doesn't have time for jokes—and Burbridge—because the latter doesn't have the patience to deal with Koontz' temperaments.

Will he get to confront a velociraptor? And if so... will he be the victor? Is all his talk just that?

  • "(darkly) Second to me there is only one predator that can give me a real challenge. ONLY... one... Do you know what that might be? And please consider your answer before you spew it out, because if you get it wrong..."

  • "(quiet and darkly) You just better hope that Burbridge doesn't leave the group again. Because if he does... It'll be "Trivia, Round Two."

  • "(softly/darkly) Consider that a lesson, Graham... (a little louder, so everyone else can hear) Consider that a lesson for all of you. Next time I might just wait a little longer to pull the trigger. (chuckles darkly) I may just keep my hand off the trigger altogether."

Tattersall is the member of the group who tries to keep conflict at a minimum between hunters; trying to keep the peace, because he feels it's better for everyone to get through this objective alive. Eventually, though, even his patience will be tested by other members of the group...

  • "Koontz is bats, I told you, man - stay away from him; there is something mentally wrong with him."

  • "(suspicious) I think you're feeling it, and you don't know how to handle it. It's the only thing to explain your rash decisions of late."

  • "(alarmed) Whoa-whoa-whoa, okay, easy there, Koontz, let Graham go, he was only teasing; just put it away, man...!"

Fernsby isn't really the sharpest tool in the shed - he's not necessarily stupid, he just doesn't often think for himself and usually just goes along with whatever the group is doing, though he tends to stay close to Tattersall.

  • "(alarmed) What the... what are you doing, Koontz?! Are you out of your mind?! Put that thing down before you hurt somebody!"

  • "We've been here for three days already, and I definitely ain't seen nothing life-changing. Just a bunch of... (searching for right words) ...over-sized... plant-eating... cow-lizards."

  • "He's got the shakes and looks like a dead fish... but he's finally making sense. He wants to see... er... talk with you."

NOTES: Character's only scene is on his death bed, so all dialogue will be performed as though in pain and barely holding on
DIALOGUES: 8

Sully is a member of the group who branched off with others to establish a base-camp. However... when the group reunites with him, he has been severely and mortally wounded.

  • "(labored breaths, weakly) We heard them... all around the camp... closing in... they got... Diego. Everybody panicked... ran... they chased us... (coughs)"

  • "(dry laugh, which turns into a coughing fit, inhales dryly) You don't... understand... You don't know... fear... until... until those things... are hunting you."
