In the Flesh | Apocalypse Series

Project Overview

'In the Flesh' is my new and original radio series that reimagines a horror-film favourite of the zombie apocalypse.


Scientist and epidemiologist Nicholas Winters has invented a serum which will change the world. Not for the better, however, but for worse. The new ‘genetic miracle’ soon reveals itself as a pandemic, crushing and decaying its subjects from the inside and turning them into vicious creatures bereft of their humanity. A young group of friends who are thrown together into the newly changed world, banding together to keep their familial love alive.


Themes/genre: horror, survival, romance, suspense

  • Clear microphone (minor background noise I can handle and remove, but anything too extreme will severely damage chances of getting cast)






















  • Read lines with emotion and conviction (I only have need for one robot voice, and I’m getting that from a computer!)






















  • All accents and voices are welcome!






















  • Understand the commitment (this will be an ongoing series that will take a lot of time and effort, so I would appreciate willingness to stick at it!)










































BE RELIABLE AND ON TIME (Normally I give very long deadlines, but if you cannot make it I will always give an extension granted that I am told beforehand.)


Audition for as many characters as you would like!

Bear in mind that the reels of emotion/sounds requested at the end of each character’s lines will be a very important judge of who I will want to cast, as the series will play heavily on emotion and it will be hard to know if I’ll cast you if I don’t know what you’re capable of :)

  • Character update

    Because they are such a key character in the Winters/scientist narrative, I've done what I've been considering from the start and made Arthur flexible to be played by either a male or female actor. The female counterpart is named Moira.

    None of the lines or characteristics will change depending on whether they are male or female in the final series, and they will be a prevalent character for a good stretch of the story - in case any extra motivation was need for potential auditions ;)

Over-confident and usually seen as arrogant against his good nature, Alexander lives to entertain and bring a smile. He’s not the brightest bulb in the shed, and overreacts to everything, but when push comes to shove he will take control of any situation to make sure nobody gets hurt. As President of the Student Council, he has become incredibly close to his vice president, Levi, and would do anything to make sure he is happy. Like Emily he treats his friends on the council as his family, but adopts a much more literal take of it than she does.

  • (bright, cheery) Oh, Em! You underestimate my charm - there's no chance at all that he'll say no!

  • (frantic) Ohhhh, where is she? What if she was accosted on the way here? Or mugged? Or kidnapped? Or murdered! Levi, I'm worried about Emily! She said she'd be here, and it's already one minute past five! What are you going to do about it!?

  • (sad, serious) Levi, look at her... we can't just force her to do anything she doesn't want to - you know what she's been through tonight as well as any of us…

Genetically enhanced mutations of people, the Changed are not your average zombie. Though their minds have decayed from an overdose of serum, they are inhumanly strong and agile, making them extremely difficult to defend against and - ultimately - kill. Their only weakness, like most, is to destroy what little mental resilience they have to stop them moving for good.

At least three will be needed, perhaps at least five depending on the scope of the project. The scientists will weave in and out of the episodes, ranging from having lots of lines to very few. They’re crucial to the effect of the series, so any and all auditions will be greatly appreciated.

  • (serious) Well, as of yesterday morning's programme they didn't seem able to speak. They didn't eat or drink the whole day, and they haven't for the past three days either - not from what we've seen. They did nothing.

  • The serum was just too powerful - even one dose would have been too much.

  • (bitter) We came here to warn you, so that you could escape too. It’s too late for me, but we need you alive. Knowing you doomed America - perhaps the world - may give you the incentive to make an antidote. I trust you are capable of that.

Imogen is a young girl the group saves from certain death. However they’re unable to save her mother, so Alexander comforts her and adopts her into his ‘family’. He dotes on her like an actual daughter, and defends her from anything that might cause her distress. Despite everything that is happening, Imogen is determined to stay positive and keep smiling, because she wants to be just like Alexander and keep people happy.

  • (close to tears) Mommy? Mummy? W…Wake up… Please wake up… Mommy! Why aren’t you waking up, come on!

  • (shy, scared) My name’s Imogen…

Samira and her girlfriend Natasha had managed to find what seemed like a safe haven from the world, but after things go horribly wrong Samira finds herself alone and bitter. She becomes hard to the world around her, refusing to succumb to the creatures that had claimed everything, and choosing to live on as long as possible out of spite. Eventually she stumbles across the group and saves Alexander’s life - drama queen that he is, he falls head over heels for her as if she were a disney prince. She spurns his affections however, but does eventually begin to have a soft spot for him after he manages to repay the favour. Samira tells it like it is, and doesn’t stand for nonsense from anyone or anything.

  • (annoyed) Goddamn, would you shut up already? She’s bleeding agonizingly from a place none of you morons are ever going to see on a woman, so why don’t you just pipe the fuck down and leave her alone for two minutes!?

  • (low, harsh) They’re all putting you first. Don’t you see? They’re leaving themselves vulnerable from every side, because every side is set on protecting you!

  • (horrified, turning into a scream) No… N-No…! No, no, no - NO!

Matthew is Emily’s dad, who works as hard as he can to keep bringing in as much money as he can to keep her at the academy and to save up for a college degree so she can become the lawyer she dreams of. He loves her more than his own life, and wants to be a big part of hers. He’s fun-loving and sometimes pretty effeminate, so some think he is trying to make up for the death of his wife by being both a mom and a dad. He gets on well with all of Emily’s friends, save for Alexander, who he thinks is more trouble than he’s worth.

The youngest of seven sons, Nicholas has been struggling since infancy to outdo his brothers, no matter the cost. Years of insecurity and mocking from them has caused him to become hard, callous, and cold. He is a perfect actor, and can and will manipulate anyone around him to help him achieve his revenge on them: to become the greatest of all of them. As such he invented the serum that changed the world, by secretly manipulating his doting assistant Cho into doing most of the work for him and claiming the glory. He intended to simply have a little fun with her and send her away in tears, but once the serum goes wrong he realises he must do whatever it takes to control her into making an antidote.

  • (confident, impressive) Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for. The day our forces become the greatest in the world. For too long wars have raged overseas, coming to no conclusion, no matter how many smaller battles we win or lose. It’s time we took the stronger step toward the peace we desire: literally.

  • (low, muttering) What a pain… Who knew she’d be so easy? Took all the fun out of it. What use is a woman if they don’t even put up a fight? Pathetic girl…

  • (soft) No-one’s ever loved you like this before.

**This character is really important to the series, so I am flexible to casting either a male or female actor**

A shy but well-meaning assistant at Jupiter Labs, it is Arthur/Moira who is one of the first to inform Nicholas of the serum’s mutation. They just want to do the right thing and help with the antidotal progress, but doesn’t realise they are also being sucked into Nicholas’ web of lies until it is too late.

  • (serious) Sir… The human body is completely incompatible with the serum, at an absolute incapacity to handle it. We've come to the conclusion that mental and physical over-exhaustion and stimulation has triggered a mental decay - perhaps even a physical decay - which started out slow, but has sped up exponentially within the weeks after its injection.

  • (frantic) Miss Atsuko, don't you see!? He doesn't love you! If he did, he wouldn't make you do this - he wouldn't turn you into a murderer like him - aargh!

  • (shouting) MURDERER!

Nothing entertains these two more than pranking people, usually Alexander. Despite being often immature and rude, they’re actually very genuine and compassionate when they want to be. Because of a somewhat reclusive upbringing due to their dad’s poor health, they stuck together for a majority of their lives and didn’t go out except to school, where they were too shy to talk to anyone. They had no friends but themselves until Emily transferred, and they became inseparable. Cora is usually the more mature of the two, but rarely shows it. There will be different actresses for either twin, but to save time on casting they are joined for the call!

  • (mocking, then upbeat) Spoken like a true man in the friendzone. Anyway, if there’s no creepy mutations to hear about then there’s no more fun to be had here. C’mon Cora, let’s see if we can’t sneak into the boy’s locker room and steal Alex’s gym clothes before he can change!

  • (anxious) Is that… Is that really what we seem like now? Does it actually seem to you like we don't care about you anymore…?

  • (scoffing) Levi? Levi’s not scared of anything, is he? He's - I mean, he's Levi!

Emily cares very strongly for all her friends, no matter how much they get on her nerves. She thinks of them as family, which has been broken to her since her mother died when she was little. She’s extremely ambitious, and dreams of being a lawyer one day so she can help people who need it. Because she is so independent, she feels she doesn’t need protection from other people, but instead should be the one protecting them.

  • (harsh, angry) Would you guys stop bringing Levi down all the time? It’s not criminal for him to like working as much as he does, okay? And frankly I think it’s amazing how much effort he puts in to try and make this school a better place. Maybe if you guys showed up to council meetings once in awhile, you’d actually know what he’s like.

  • (furious, close to tears) How dare you…? How dare you just walk away from me before I even have a chance to explain myself!?

Levi is the exact opposite of his best friend, Alexander. He is cool, collected, and above all things calm. He has been raised strictly to be polite and gentlemanly at all times, and his family do not at all approve of any of his friends, which only makes him more determined to cherish them. The only person he is most himself around is Emily, leading many to believe he has a soft spot for her - to both of their denial. Usually under pressure Levi flawlessly maintains his composure, but if he should think he had lost one of his friends forever he would spiral out of control.

  • (irritable) Yes, yes, we've already established the degrees of Emily’s endearing aesthetic! Shoes off, please, if you don't mind - and then we can get down to business.

  • (pleasant) I've often been mistaken about you, you know; I'm only glad you're always able to prove me wrong. You're a fascinating young woman, Emily Flint. And I really do admire that resilience of yours…

  • (frightened, breathless) I thought one of them had got you… I’ve been looking for you for hours, and I… The others are still out searching, but I’m here and… I was just so scared, Em… Just look at me! Look at how much I’m shaking… God, I’m pathetic!

Chloe lives for all things pink and cute, and it’s her dream to style Emily to look just like a little sister. She thinks of Sebastian as a brother and cares about him more than anyone else. Because of her cute demeanour most people assume that she’s pretty pathetic and defenseless, but she’s skilled enough at karate to bodyslam anything that comes her way. She’s all about breaking down stereotypes, and enjoys a nice slice of cake after decking an opponent over her knee.

  • (gentle) He hides it from you really well… But I know him well enough to read through any face he puts on. He’s done a lot of stupid things in his life for people he cares about, and he’s gotten himself really badly hurt along the way: he was in a car accident to save me when I fell in the road when we were really young. He almost died in the hospital, but that still wasn’t enough to stop him going to any lengths to protect his loved ones…

  • (excited) Em, you look so cute in that outfit! How come you never like it when I choose you clothes like that!?

  • (scared, angry) No, no! All of you stay back! Don’t come any closer!

Sebastian is the school’s rising athlete, hoping to become an olympic fencer. He’s also extremely intelligent, but conveniently becomes unable to concentrate on his homework when Emily is around. Though they’re both convinced against it, they’ve been crushing on each other for almost a year straight. Sebastian loves all his friends deeply, but would protect Emily above them all - even his best friend Chloe, who he has known for almost his entire life. Though he tries to be a ‘strong, silent’ kind of guy, he ends up ruining it by losing his temper and swearing a lot.

  • (annoyed) Piss off, Cora! Emily has higher priorities than finding a boyfriend, even if you don’t.

  • (angry, betrayed) Misunderstanding!? You kissed him! How can I possibly interpret that wrong!?

A Japanese medical graduate who has traveled to America to pursue her ambition, Cho has fallen completely in love with her supervisor. Because of a troubled history of men using her for her looks, she instantly admires Nicholas Winters for the respect he shows her intelligence - unaware that he is using it for his own selfish ends. She begins the story by being timid and shy, but as time grows on she becomes wiser to the schemes of her lover and develops a hard exterior and begins to fight back, growing from a girl into a woman.

  • (nervous, insecure) Me? I - Well, uh… The experiment outlines a series of micro-injections to the major muscles - including the brain - whereby the serum infusion will cause immediate cellular enhancement. The newly modified cells supply the subjects with superior speed, agility, strength, and brainpower than that prior to the serum. Similar to the spreading of disease within the body, in place of virus or bacteria, all that spreads is pure power.

  • (shy, flustered) I’m sure you’re not saying what I think you are, so - so if you’re playing with me like everyone else does, then… please don’t…

  • (harsh, cold) I let you violate me. You destroyed everything I was going to be. And now you’re going to pay, you bastard!
