Higurashi When They Cry: Visual Novel Fan Dub Extras
Project Overview
Greetings, readers, and welcome to Hinamizawa!
Higurashi, while more recognizable for its excellent animé adaptation in 2006, originated as a sound novel written by Ryukishi07. It was released in eight separate parts, starting in 2002 and ending in 2006. Similar to its animé adaptation, Higurashi was filled with mystery and horror, but balanced it out with sillier and more down to earth moments, making it an experience to remember. It has a very special place in my heart, and that's why I want to organize a fan dub of it! Be warned about spoilers, though!
Fortunately, nowadays the sound novels are easy to access - MangaGamer has been re-releasing them on Steam with an updated script, new character art, and, down the line, are going to release some of the extra stories that were only released in Japan. This fan dub is going to cover everything MangaGamer releases under the "Higurashi When They Cry Hou" brand. At the time of this writing, not all of the chapters have been completed, but should we happen to catch up with MangaGamer, we will simply wait until new chapters are released. Since we're covering everything Higurashi, knowing what happens is recommended. This Casting Call is only covering Onikakushi; the rest of the characters will have a separate Casting Call when Onikakushi nears its end.
The fan dub will be uploaded to YouTube. Unless the videos are taken down, they will stay there - that will not change. However, given circumstances, I may convert the sound files I'm sent and make this fan dub a mod on Steam. This isn't likely; while we are dubbing every spoken line, many of the non-spoken lines will be glossed over. Only specific scenes will be getting the full treatment, those of which you'll know when you get casted. Still, I'm open to the idea.
It's highly recommended that you use Discord. It's not necessary - I can get your voice lines through Casting Call directly, worst case - but Discord is much easier. I'm on there a lot. It's also a lot better for chatting with other actors and any fans that will join the server. The actual server will be linked below.
Before you audition, please note the following:
1) Make sure you have good mic quality! This one is extremely important. Make sure there's minimal background echo, your voice is clear and easily heard, and be ready to time your lines to the game's auto advance feature. No laptop mics, no phone recordings, etc. That said, so long as it's good, I will consider casting you, so don't be afraid to audition!
2) Once casted, I'm going to leave initial takes up to you. Once you're casted and added to the Discord - more on the Discord later - you're ready to record your lines. The first takes are all on you, so do whatever you like and what you think fits! That being said...
3) If I think a line of yours needs a retake, I will ask that you do the retake. Don't expect to only have to submit lines once! Be okay with the fact that I may ask you to re-do lines. And don't think I'm asking you because I'm upset! We're all here to have a good time and I'd never ask you to re-do a line because I hate the way it came out. Typically if I ask, I just would rather a line spoken in a different tone, or something along those lines. It's also totally possible that I can be off track with something, so if you disagree with my direction, don't be afraid to let me know!
4) This is going to be a very, very long process. Higurashi is not short. The word count is through the roof, to put it one way. I ask that you have patience and, most importantly, don't quit out on me and everyone else because of the length. I'm going to try and get these out at a reasonable pace, so with any luck this won't be a major issue.
5) Let me know if you have any suggestions. The goal is to dub over all of Higurashi, but this doesn't mean we can't do anything on the side. I'd rather focus on that when we're all caught up, but if an idea is fun, or everyone is up for it, I don't mind doing something as a little diversion.
6) The English dub for the animé is a good place to look FOR VOICE ONLY. The voice cast for the dub was quite good, but the direction was... not very good, putting it nicely. While I'm open to any kind of voice for the characters, so long as it fits, looking to the dub as a place to start is recommended.
7) I will be leaving feedback on every audition, if possible! I tend to stick to the positives, so expect mostly positive feedback. Still, I think it's important for people auditioning to know what worked about their audition, not only for the future of the fan dub, but going forward, too. So don't be afraid to try out!
8) Have fun! Like I said earlier, we're all in this to have a good time!

Congratulations to everybody who was cast! The CastingCall will remain open for people who would like to audition for the extras for another month. If you do, just join the Discord and we'll go from there. If you weren't casted, don't worry - characters from Book 2 and onward will have their own CastingCall put up when we wrap up Onikakushi. There are a few of you I really liked and couldn't cast, and would love for you to try again once that comes out. For everyone that did get cast, congratulations again, and I look forward to working with you!

And we're done!
Huge thanks to everybody who auditioned! It means the world to me that so many people auditioned for this project of mine. Higurashi means a lot to me, and so many others, and I'm pumped to work with you! I'll be listening to all of the auditions multiple times and making my decisions. Even if you aren't casted for a main role, I'll more than likely need you in an extra, so join the Discord! We're very welcoming. Either way, you'll more than likely get a message from me with a link to the Discord in it. Again, thank you all so much, and look forward to the fandub's release! -
Two weeks left!
Hello again, everyone. Like last time, I just want to thank everybody who's auditioned so far. I really like all of the auditions I've listened to, and come the deadline, I'm really going to have one heck of a hard time deciding who to cast! I'm just about done with the transcribing part of Onikakushi, so I can go into more detail about how releasing episodes onto YouTube will work. Each novel is split into different chapters - a chapter begins, things happen, and the end is signified by the TIPS (little extras, basically). Each video will cover one full chapter. That's going to make videos very long, but like I said in the description, we're only aiming to have every spoken line voiced. A lot of the internal monologue will go unvoiced - not all of it, but the majority. The text advancing will be set to auto. As for auditions, from here on I'm only going to listen to them once a week, and then comment on them in a single bunch. Works well for me that way. Also, CastingCall keeps changing it, but the deadline is definitely December 2! Not December 1! -
Three weeks left, Discord open!
https://discord.gg/MWqYrFN The link to the Discord will be put in the description, as well. Anyone is allowed to join, before or after the deadline! Roles for the actors are all set and will be assigned after the deadline. Thank you all so much for auditioning! The casting process is going to be very difficult! 20 auditions in under a week is fantastic, and I'm grateful to all of you who have auditioned. Please spread the word so we can get even more great auditions! We especially need male actors - specifically, for Tomitake and Ooishi. Nobody's auditioned for them yet. Worst case, I can figure something out. That said, if you're female and want to audition, please do! I'm still working on getting the transcript done for Onikakushi (the first), but I should have it done by the next update in a week, so I'll get into how episodes are going to be paced next time. There's still three weeks left, so keep the auditions coming! Thanks again! -
Day 1
Thank you all who've auditioned so far! When I put this up last night I didn't think I'd have this many auditions to listen to already. When I got back from work and saw all of the notifications, I was very happy! That said, I won't actually be casting until the deadline, so please be patient! I'll be giving feedback on every audition as I listen to them. Thanks again!
From the When They Cry Wiki:
Keiichi is a passionate individual who tends to express strong emotions freely, for good or ill. He also has a great amount of charisma, which is presumably why he's already so well-liked in Hinamizawa by his friends and the other villagers who know him. Keiichi is also in love with life in Hinamizawa, because it's so much more fulfilling than his old life. Keiichi is normally open and outgoing, but when something comes between him and his friends, he can become very withdrawn and overly self-reliant. Keiichi's most important talent is his ability to influence people with words, which is such that Rika has dubbed him the “Magician of Words”.
That's right. Okay! Shall we commence this battle?! (excited and competitive, about to eat)
I'm kidding. I'd wait for you. (teasing, but soft)
I had been thinking it strange for a while now... It's been following me this whole time...! I run and run and run and run... But it just sticks to me like a shadow! (out of breath, scared)
From the When They Cry Wiki:
Rena initially is sweet and friendly by nature, but she can be quite scary when threatened or angry. Certain situations in the story cause her personality to change dramatically. Rena's reaction strongly suggests that she does hate lies, especially from friends.
Hauu~! So cute! I want to take it home with me! (excited)
You're lying. ...YOU'RE LYING!! (initially quiet, then shouts angrily)
Don't do it, Rena. Don't think of those thoughts anymore... You're happy now... You're definitely happy... (aimlessly to herself, empty)
From the When They Cry Wiki:
Mion is the heir of the Sonizaki family and is the leader of the Hinamizawa School club. As the oldest in the class, she is the Class Representative. Mion is a tomboy, and since she is the oldest of the rest of the students, she refers to herself as "old man" throughout the games, manga, and anime. She also has a girly side. It is revealed and very often strongly hinted that she has a crush on Maebara Keiichi, which she expresses by picking on and teasing him at every possible occasion.
If you are cast for Mion, you will more than likely be cast as Shion, as well. Keep this in mind when auditioning!
Ahh, finally, finally! You two are late! Morning, Rena. And it's been a while, Kei-chan! How many years? (jokingly)
No one can say they grew up in a sterile room, never failing or making mistakes. Life is an ongoing process of trial and error. (serious)
No more...! Please...! No more! I don't want to see anyone else die! If you hate me... then just kill me already! I'm the one you hate, right?! (panicked)
From the When They Cry Wiki:
Satoko, despite her past, is an energetic and playful girl. She has a very distinctive laugh, 'vampire fangs' as Keiichi describes, and loves to set traps to play pranks on her friends. Satoko can be incredibly analytical and intuitive at times.
Oh-ho-ho-ho! (confident, arrogant laugh - this is VERY important)
I understand... We are a loving family. (empty)
Do whatever you want to me, just don't go into his room! Don't destroy Nii-Nii's room! (panicked)
From the When They Cry Wiki:
Rika often seems wise beyond her years. Childish Rika has a tendency to speak using "cute" phrases; including sound effects and nonsense words such as nipah, mii, cat sounds and saying pachi pachi (clap clap) while clapping her hands. When revealing her True Personality, Rika's cuteness disappears, and she turns cynical and more mature. Since this is the persona and voice Rika uses when thinking to herself, narrating events, and when speaking to Hanyu, it can be assumed it is her real personality, which she keeps under wraps to avoid scaring her friends.
Ni-pah~ (cutesy, kid voice)
I will live past June 1983, and then I am going to grow much taller.... I'm not going to stay in a child's body for the rest of my life! (serious, kid voice)
Don't be sad. The world may not forgive you, but I do. Don't be sad.You may not forgive the world, but I forgive you. Tell me. What must I do to earn your forgiveness? (serious, adult voice)
From the When They Cry Wiki:
He visits Hinamizawa about three times every year and is known by the villagers. Tomitake also seems to know a lot about the village and its history, although this may be in part due to his relationship with his girlfriend Takano Miyo, who has a deep interest in the subject.
Not from the wiki, but Tomitake is a very goofy, easy going man. He can be serious when the time calls for it, though, and is very knowledgeable about things the villagers don't like to share.
Hey, long time no see! Keiichi-kun, right? (friendly)
Ahh, Takano-chan, stop it. You're scaring him. (scolding lightly)
From the When They Cry Wiki:
She enjoys frightening people with tales of Hinamizawa's past. She is infamous for being an occult maniac, almost to the point of being considered a joke. She has many scrapbooks containing all her different theories about Oyashiro-sama's curse, and she sometimes lends them to people for fun.
How was the festival, Keiichi-kun? Did you enjoy it? (harmless)
But... I wonder about that now. There are quite a few young people who believe... in Oyashiro-sama's curse. (not harmless)
From the When They Cry Wiki:
Ōishi is initially portrayed as a fairly light-hearted, playful, and somewhat shady detective who is devoted and serious about solving the case, and at first seems to be a reliable ally to Keiichi. However, it is revealed that he is capable of being extremely intimidating, and won't think twice about resorting to violence.
Are you Maebara-san? I have the AC on in my car, let's talk there. It's a bit hot out here, don't you think? (casual)
Maebara-san! Who is the culprit?! How many are there?! (serious)
Keiichi's Mother is a minor role in the story. Anything basic will work as a voice.
I'm so happy you've been waking up early since we moved here, Keiichi. (happy)
Isn't it about time to meet up with Rena-chan? Hurry, hurry. Please thank Rena-chan for the pickles~! (happy)
Keiichi's Father is a minor role in the story. Anything basic will work as a voice.
Keiichi, we're almost there. Wake up.
Guess what? Your dad found a great restaurant in Okinomiya! Let's go there! (excited)
Any older sounding male voice will do. Multiple of you will be accepted, so don't fret if you aren't "cast". Check your DMs on Casting Call either way.
Say anything!
Any older sounding female voice will do. Multiple of you will be accepted, so don't fret if you aren't "cast". Check your DMs on Casting Call either way.
Say anything!
Any child sounding voice will do. Multiple of you will be accepted, so don't fret if you aren't "cast". Check your DMs on Casting Call either way.
Tomita and Okamura will also be decided through this. Please say in your audition if you're auditioning for one of these two.
