Hellboy: The Crooked Man (Comic Dub)

Project Overview

A Comic dub of The Hellboy Comic by Mike Mignola "The Crooked Man"

Synopsis:

Set in the Appalachian mountains of 1958, Hellboy: The Crooked Man follows Hellboy as he wanders into the backwoods of Virginia. There he meets Tom Ferrell, a man returning to his home after years away, seeking redemption for his past dealings with dark forces. The two uncover a region steeped in folklore and witchcraft, plagued by a legacy of curses, ghosts, and infernal bargains.

At the heart of the evil is Jeremiah Witkins, once a miserly man who sold his soul and became the dreaded Crooked Man, a warped figure who haunts the hills as a servant of the Devil. As Hellboy and Tom descend into the world of hexes, restless spirits, and backwoods demonology, they must confront the Crooked Man and put an end to the cycle of damnation that has bound the local people for generations.

Hellboy (or Anung-Un-Rama) is a half-demon half-human paranormal investigator. Destined to bring about the end of the world, he was summoned to Earth in the twilight of World War II and was raised by the forces of good. Though his demonic heritage grants him longevity, great physical strength, and a distinctive appearance, he rejects his apocalyptic destiny and serves as a force for good, combating paranormal threats large and small during his fifty-year career as an agent of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense or on his own solo travels.

Tom Ferrell was born around 1923 in the Appalachian Mountains near the Hurricane to a mother we know little of and his father, Charles E. Ferrell, who had a habit of drinking in the back woods. His early misadventures with witchcraft led to a self-imposed exodus. His return twenty years later proved to be a blessing as he and Hellboy lifted at least the curse of Jeremiah Witkins and his witches from the area.

I'm thinking a bit like Timothy Olyphant's character "The Spirit of the West" from Rango.

Cora Fisher was an inhabitant of the area near The Hurricane in the Appalachian Mountains who had grown up with Tom Ferrell and had married her childhood sweetheart. Sadly enough, after losing both her husband and children she was tempted into becoming a witch (presumably by Effie Kolb) in service to The Crooked Man. When Tom and Hellboy confronted her with it she sought to repent her misdeeds, but when they passed over the coal mines haunted by Melungion witches they caused her to explode in a swarm of luminescent demonic critters. This wasn't the end of her though as her spirit went ahead to Reverend Watts' church and notified him of the impending arrival of Tom and Hellboy. She then stood by them when the Crooked man and his minions laid siege to the church. Her spirit was last seen standing next to the reverend, with Tom having made plans for a marker for her it can be assumed she was able to rest in peace.

Headcanon Voice:

For her voice, preferably a mixture Jennifer Connelly's voice peformance as 7 in the 2009 animated feature "9" and her performance as Alicia Nash in "A Beautiful Mind".

Effie Kolb was the right-hand woman, chief supporter, and main witch of Watkins. Effie is the first witch Tom Ferrell ever met, having taught Tom about the pleasures of female companionship along with tricking him into forming a pact with her master Witkins, whose sorcery maintains her youthful appearance. When Tom returns to Virginia in 1958, Effie taunts him, revealing that she turned his elderly father into a horse with a magic bridle, then rode him until he died of exhaustion. During the standoff between Witkins and Tom at the old church in "The Hurricane", Effie dances seductively among Wikins's minions, inviting Tom to embrace the dark side, and her, once again. After Witkins is finally destroyed, Tom and Hellboy find Effie skulking outside his mansion, her body now reflecting its true age. Feeble and helpless, she pleads for mercy, but receives little from Tom, who forces the magic bridle into her mouth, turning her into a nag. To add insult to injury, Hellboy paints a warning on Effie's side to keep people away from her, thus ensuring that the bridle will never be removed, and she will spend the rest of her known life as a nag.

Role assigned to: KrabbyFlab

Reverend Nathanial Armstrong Watts was the sole priest of a dilapidated church near the area known as The Hurricane. Despite losing most of his followers to the increasing number of witches he was not afraid of Jeremiah Witkins and his minions. Instead he helped Tom Ferrell and Hellboy to combat the Crooked Man, withstanding some mighty temptations the reverend infused the Lucky Cat bone with the Holy Spirit and blessed a shovel that Hellboy uses to whack the miser out of the fray. He then helped them bury Tom's father Charles in the churchyard and agreed to help Tom put up a marker for Cora Fisher later. Just after Hellboy returned home, Reverend Watts decided to go after the witches residing in the nearby mines and took Tom with him. Many witches blew apart just from hearing his holy invocations, and those that remained he dispatched with his shovel. He died soon afterwards of natural causes, leaving the land to Tom and being buried next to Charles and Cora.

Abbi Riley was born and raised in Appalachia, in a small village in the deep of the forest, near the coal mines. she was a parishioner of Reverend Watts, and that the two were also good friends. She also knew what kind of looks the Reverend had for her during the celebration, but she never tried to exploit that kind of influence. She did, however, get married to a man from the town, but apparently things didn’t go very well. We don’t know what happened, maybe the man was violent and abusive, or maybe Abbi was just tired of him… either way, when she couldn’t stand him anymore and with no possibility of divorce, not at the end of the XIX Century in such a small and rural place, she poisoned him, and got away with that. Some time later she got married a second time, but apparently this new husband wasn’t much different from the first one: eventually, Abbi got rid of him with her tested “fast divorce method”, and she became a widow once again. Everyone offered her her sympathies and condolences, even mourned with her… but she was free.

According to local legend, Jeremiah Witkins was one of the first settlers in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. He built his house in an area called The Hurricane. He was also one of the worst men in his lifetime, amassing his fortune from the misery of others. Stirring conflict between his fellow settlers and the native tribes, he sold liquor and guns to both sides, during both the American Revolution and the Civil War. Witkins was eventually hanged for his crimes, and his fortune was dispersed to the winds, but his name and memory became cursed among the locals. However, because of his impressive record of sin, "the Devil" sent Witkins back to the mortal world as a demonic soul collector.

Now known as the Crooked Man, Witkins recruited the witch Effie Kolb as his right-hand woman while turning local women into witches by preying on them during the low ebbs of their lives. He collected souls in glass jars, where they took the appearance of gold coins.

When he was a boy, Tom Ferrell was seduced by Effie Kolb, who convinced him to make a Lucky cat bone with a Satanic ritual. Yet on his way home from completing the ritual, Tom saw the Crooked Man watching him from the woods, and ran home in terror, swearing never to use the bone's power.

In 1958, while on their way to a rural church to bury the body of his father, Tom and Hellboy were attacked on the road by Witkins's minions, and fought them off, convincing Tom that he had, without wanting to, used the bone and thus completed his own damnation.

As they took refuge inside the church with Reverend Watts, the Crooked Man hovered outside with Kolb and a host of witches, demanding that Tom pay his side of the bargain. Reverend Watts told Tom that he had never used the bone, that in spite of his youthful foolishness he was still a good man, and the Devil had no claim on him. Watts then challenged Witkins to come and "fetch" Tom himself, knowing that Witkins and his ilk could not cross the threshold of the church. As day broke, Reverend Watts consecrated the bone, turning it into a holy object, and did the same to a shovel, which Hellboy used to pulverize the Crooked Man's human form, causing Kolb and the other witches to flee.

Hellboy and Ferrell then went to Witkins's house in the Hurricane, and found him in his true demonic form: a twisted, crab-like creature hunched over his jars of gold, muttering, "It's mine... it's all mine..." Tom threw the lucky cat bone at him, causing the demon to disappear. Tom was unsure whether he had set the souls of Witkins's other victims free, or sent them down to Hell with him, but either way, the Crooked Man was finished.
