Harry Potter TAS Casting Call #1

Project Overview

Harry Potter: The Abridged Series is a satire of the Harry Potter films created with Microsoft Powerpoint. I have already completed all eight installments, and I wish to put them up on YouTube (non-profit).

I'd like to add voices to accompany the characters' speech balloons. There are some characters I intend on voicing, but I am opening up all of the slots to see if anyone can do better. All I recommend is a high-quality recording, and a semi-believable European accent (unless you possess a real one, in which case, go right ahead).

Some roles are more important than others, so I'm going with the most important ones first. Many minor roles will open up in the future that can easily be doubled. I may choose some auditions on the spot before the deadline is met so that I can open up auditions for more characters quicker.

EDIT: I'm enjoying how everything's going so far. Once there's at least one audition for each character, I'll open up the next casting call so that there's more characters to try out for. Thanks to everyone for auditioning!

EDIT: I realize that I've delayed the deadline several times now. I've been busy working on the series among other things. Getting a series like this off the ground is a long process, and I am thankful for everyone who has auditioned.

Hermione is also very similar to her movie counterpart. She's everyone's favorite academic know-it-all, with a tendency to be aggressive at times. Similar to Harry, Ron, and all of the other child characters, her voice will have to mature as the series progresses.

  • Sorcerer's Stone (young voice): "Anyways, my name is Hermione Granger. My parents are both Muggles, so I grew up like you did."

  • Prisoner of Azkaban (mid-ranged voice): (Angrily) "Don't start with me, Ron! Not right after divination!"

  • Deathly Hallows part 1 (matured voice): "Actually, Harry, I've packed everything we could need into this magical bag."

Installments: All except for Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban

Lord Voldemort, while undeniably evil, is incredibly hammy in the series. While generally malevolent, he can also be excitable. I'm looking for an over-the-top whispery tone, essentially an exaggeration of Ralph Fiennes' performance. The younger version of Tom Riddle will be decided later.

Also, why not throw in an "Avada Kedavra!" into your audition?

EDIT: I appreciate everyone who's auditioned. However, Voldemort is another one of the characters I had intended to voice. A lot of it is based on the writing of the series and the general hamminess I'm trying to convey. But I'll get in touch with everyone who auditioned for him and give or recommend different roles.

  • Goblet of Fire: "Ah yes, Harry Potter! I almost forgot you were here! It's been a while, hasn't it?"

  • Sorcerer's Stone: (Angered) "SHUT UP, QUIRRELL! Could I have asked for a worse vessel?"

  • Deathly Hallows part 1: "If you want to redeem yourself, Lucius, you will let me borrow your wand for the task."

Hagrid helps provide comic relief in the series. He is almost always friendly and optimistic, even when it's not the best time to be so. He has somewhat of a drinking problem, and in his spare time works as a police officer. Hagrid's gruff, yet friendly voice will stay the same throughout the series, aside from a flashback in the Chamber of Secrets where he sounds younger.

  • Sorcerer's Stone: "He died right after he killed your parents when he tried to touch you. It was their love that saved ye, Harry. Now, let me finish this drink, Harry, and then we can go to Gringotts."

  • Prisoner of Azkaban: "I think the Minister is coming. Ye kids should leave out the back. They can't know that ye were here."

  • Deathly Hallows part 2: (Excitedly) "Wow! This is leaving me so far on the edge of my seat that I'm standing up!"

Installments: All except for Deathly Hallows part 1

For the first two installments, Dumbledore will resemble the Richard Harris portrayal of the character. Starting with the Prisoner of Azkaban, he will resemble the Michael Gambon portrayal. I'd like the same voice actor to cover both versions. There are many points when the Gambon version cleverly uses what people are saying against them, so the actor must convey the right inflection to make Dumbledore seem cool saying it.

  • Chamber of Secrets (Harris): "It appears that the chamber has indeed been opened, and Hogwarts is no longer safe."

  • Order of the Phoenix (Gambon): (Slightly condescendingly) "I find it quite ironic how your solution is to get rid of teachers, thus limiting the education at Hogwarts. Is that really improving the learning of the students?"

  • Goblet of Fire (Gambon): (Furiously) "Did you put your name into the Goblet of Fire? Did you have an older student put it in for you?"

Snape is as dry and negative as he is in the films. Even when he is given a silly line, he says it in a flat, cynical tone. Of course, he also gets angry from time to time. I'm looking for a spot-on Alan Rickman impression. (The younger Snape in Deathly Hallows part 2 will be decided upon later.)

  • Chamber of Secrets: (Sternly) "No what-ifs, Potter! Once Dumbledore arrives we will discuss your punishment!"

  • Half-Blood Prince: "If only we could relive the days where the students didn’t ask so many questions."

  • Order of the Phoenix: (Impatiently) "It’s because you need pay more attention so that the Dark Lord doesn’t take over your mind!"

Harry is, obviously, the main character of the series, and requires the largest amount of lines. He starts out as curious and naive at the beginning, but grows more snarky and cynical as the series progresses and he starts to realize more plot holes and other story problems. The actor must be able to make him sound young at first, and gradually older throughout the series.

EDIT: I've decided that since Harry is meant to represent my views and satirical claims in the series, it would be best for me to voice him.

  • Sorcerer's Stone (young voice): (Somewhat shy): "Excuse me. Are you all wizards? I'm looking for platform nine and three quarters."

  • Prisoner of Azkaban (medium-ranged voice): (Pessimistic): "This school can never hire a good Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Why should this one be any different?"

  • Order of the Phoenix (matured voice): "What do you mean you can't come and teach us? You're the title of the movie! You have to do something!"

Ron behaves similarly to how he does in the movies. He tends to act cowardly, and is a bit slow at times, but he still manages to be Harry's best friend. Similarly to Harry, Ron's voice will start out young and get older as the series progresses.

  • Sorcerer's Stone (young voice): (Excited) "That's an invisibility cloak! Put it on!"

  • Chamber of Secrets (mid-puberty voice): (Nervous) "Harry, what are we going to do? My sister’s in mortal peril and we don’t know everything yet! We don’t have Hermione, Dumbledore, or Hagrid to help us!"

  • Goblet of Fire (medium-ranged voice): (Happy) "Don't ruin this good moment, Hermione. I actually got a date with Padma Patil! The best part about it is that I have no idea why!"

Installments: All

Draco Malfoy in this series is an enjoyably despicable character. He always goes out of his way to offend or irritate people without fully realizing the consequences that may befall upon him. Draco's voice should change as he gets older, but should always be somewhat on the high side.

  • Sorcerer's Stone (young voice): "Hey, Potter! Have I mentioned today that I hate you?"

  • Order of the Phoenix (matured voice): "I don't see what the problem is. We learned the unforgivable curses last year, what else do we need?"

  • Chamber of Secrets (young voice): (Panicking) "Look! I only act tough to make myself feel better! Please don't hurt me! I'm actually really pathetic!"
