Gransazers vs Akelon English (Re)Fandub
Project Overview
Hi everyone, K here back with more voice-acting nonsense! I’m casting for another tokusatsu fandub and this time, I decided to take the leap forward into dubbing (or in this case, redubbing) a scene from toku! And I’m starting off with a scene from my fave hidden gem tokusatsu, Gransazer! I chose this scene because it’s one of my favourites and it marks a turning point in the series.
It’s a redub because an English dub produced in my homeland of Singapore already exists, but…it sucks. So I wanna make some improvements and have my own take on this scene.
GUIDELINES/RULES:
- I won’t demand for any professional equipment, but you must at least have a decent set-up and your voice is clear enough for me to hear and there is no excessive background noise/buzzing.
- You can audition for more than one role. In fact I highly encourage it!
- If you are selected for a role, you have the option to send your lines through Discord (I’ll DM you my account link), Twitter DMs or the collaborate tab on this site.
- Multiple takes preferred!
- I'm playing Mika & Ryoko in this fandub, so they aren't available for auditioning.
- I won’t expect any knowledge for Gransazer since it’s quite obscure, but at least have some knowledge in tokusatsu so that you understand the tropes being played out in this scene.
- I’ll send you a word doc of the script if you are selected for the role.

- KEY PRONUNCIATION GUIDELINES: Karin’s name is pronounced as “Kah-reen”, Akelon is pronounced “Ahkeh-lon”, Akira’s name is pronounced as “Ah-kih-rah” and Naoto’s name is pronounced as “Now-toh”.
- I will probably produce more Gransazer fandubs like this in the future, so please try to keep in contact with me if you can!
- Also, likewise, do not fret if you didn't get casted or there isn't a role for you. More opportunities will come in the future for you to audition!
- While I listed the deadline to be on April 11, I will likely extend it, but that depends on the situation.

Akira is the leader of the Wind Tribe and represents the zodiac sign Gemini. A stern doctor, Akira was deceived by Karin Saeki (aka the Akelon) into fighting the other Gransazers, including his own teammates, Ryoko and Jin, when they stopped trusting her. However, Akira has since come to his senses and is now fighting alongside the others. In this scene, he was kidnapped by Karin and is being held hostage inside her now kaiju Akelon body.
Akira’s dub voice sounded like a bad Peter Cullen impression, so I’m definitely NOT looking for that. Instead, I was thinking more on the lines of something that sounds like either Steve Blum or Dan Green, but so long your take sounds okay, I’m fine with anything.
(angry, but determined) If you’re thinking of destroying mankind, I’ll destroy you first even if it means I’ll lose my own life!
(sound slightly regretful) Karin deceived me and I turned against you all. Now it’s my chance to atone for my sins.
TRANSFORM!
Tenma is the leader of the Flame Tribe and represents the zodiac sign Sagittarius. He is the stereotypical toku/shounen protagonist: a hot-headed guy who has a burning sense of justice and will leap into action as soon as he can.
Just use your best shounen protagonist voice, but don’t make it over-the-top.
(slightly miffed) So wait, is that an insult or a compliment? Which is it?
(angry, but also worried) Don’t say that! You’re one of us now! We’re not gonna let you die!
TRANSFORM!
Naoto is the leader of the Earth Tribe and represents the zodiac sign Taurus. Like a bull, Naoto is stubborn and standoffish, even being resistant to his destiny as a Gransazer at the beginning. However, by this time, he has become more cooperative and joins up with his other two Tribe members, even encouraging Akira to fight alongside the rest of them.
Naoto sounded like a bad Dan Southworth (Vergil from DMC and Eric in Time Force) impression in the dub, so you could either go for a) a good Dan Southworth impression or b) something else entirely.
(serious tone) I’m not gonna back down. Especially from an enemy that defeated me before.
(Encouraging tone) I understand your guilt and how you feel you’re not worthy, but…if you only care about your pride, then you’re not fit to be a Gransazer! Let’s do this, Akira! Let’s fight together!
TRANSFORM!
Jin is the other male member of the Wind Tribe and represents the zodiac sign Libra. Jin is relaxed and was initially not serious about his Gransazer duties when he was still with Karin, but has now taken the role more seriously following the Wind Tribe’s reformation.
Jin had a bad surfer dude accent in the dub, and while I dislike it overall, I did find that it gave him a bit of personality, so if you wish, you could keep the accent, but please TONE IT DOWN.
(nonchalant) Well, that can’t be helped. She was quite persuasive, you know.
Ah, atonement. One of the most noble things you could ever do…
TRANSFORM!
Gou is the other male member of the Earth Tribe and represents the zodiac sign Capricorn. A dutiful and dedicated police officer, Gou is always loyal to his friends and his Tribe. He's also kind of a dork, just so you know, but this side does not appear in this fandub.
I do not have a specific direction for Gou, so the only thing I will say is that if you are cast, be prepared to do comedy stuff just in case for future fandubs!
I know. (pause) I think Naoto thinks the same.
I just have a feeling that he’s watching over us, even if we aren’t together. It’s just that…well, a hardworking girl like you makes him look lazy.
TRANSFORM!
Ran is the sole female member of the Earth Tribe and represents the zodiac sign Virgo. A happy-go-lucky and carefree girl, Ran is actually quite devoted to her duties as a Gransazer and acts as the heart that binds her often divided Tribe. In this scene, she had just attempted to convince Naoto to join with her and Gou again.
Ran has a higher-pitched voice with a sweet tone. Unfortunately, her English dub actress was terrible and made the pitch of her voice practically chipmunk-like, so I would advise that you only audition if you’re really confident with doing such a voice without it sounding weird.
(slightly sheepish) I just want to try my best in whatever I do. I don’t want to cause trouble for anyone.
(Relieved) You’re okay!
TRANSFORM!
A physicist, Karin Saeki was actually an Akelon alien who impersonated the dead scientist for two decades. She manipulated the Wind Tribe into fighting the other Sazers. She also developed feelings for Akira/Sazer Remls. However, she was eventually exposed and the Wind Tribe turned on her. In this scene, she had recently been revived from her first death and had transformed into the Akelon Star Beast, a giant kaiju monster, and had kidnapped Akira in one last attempt to win him over.
Karin has a deep, womanly voice befitting of a female villain, but softens her tone when dealing with her beloved Akira.
Akira…Akira.
(serious tone) Akira…the Gransazers can’t win. Mankind will be destroyed. (switches to a softer tone) But…for you…
(very miffed) What a pity…
Ken is the other male member of the Flame Tribe and represents the zodiac sign Leo. Mika’s younger brother, Ken is the direct opposite of his tomboyish, tough-as-nails sister: meek, shy and kind. He often acts as the Sane Man to Mika and Tenma’s shenanigans.
The only direction I have for Ken is that I’m looking for a young-sounding voice that can sound both soft and determined at the same time.
Come on, Akira!
TRANSFORM!
The main mentor to the Gransazers, but he doesn't have much screentime here. I'm looking for a voice that sounds like an older gentleman, but please do not exaggerate it.
