First Sign Of Madness: a new queer audiodrama
Project Overview
Keep in mind that this show contains heavy themes such as Depression, Suicide, Parental Abuse, and Neglect, it also includes plenty of mild Transphobia, Underage Drinking, and Recreational Drug Use, so please continue with caution.
FSOM is a podcast about a British boarding school and centers around two characters by the names of Alan Jones (a closed trans student with a very messy sleep schedule) and Josh Davis (St. Maria's No.1 Loneliest Goalie), following their lives over two months, as they learn to live with pissy parents, not-quite-friends, and your typical teenage growing pains. it is a coming-of-age story framed a descent into madness, as the title suggests. it takes place over four "chapters", each roughly around half an hour, along with three "minisodes" set between the first and second chapters, as well as one after the fourth. written by Nu Finlay, edited and Directed by Nu Finlay and Alexis Hill, Produced by Nu Finlay.
+and finally, very cliche, I know, but have fun! as that's really what this whole show is about.

Mr. Carter is the anxious and scatter-brained art teacher of St. Marias, he tends to be constantly nervous and believes all the students either hate or dislike him due to him being "boring". He is close friends with the school's History teacher, Mrs. Vivini. He appears in chapter one and is the central character of the minisode "bus".
although we do have his accent as English if you can do/have an Irish accent that is acceptable as he is an Irish character - don't feel you have too though! Performance is far more important to us than accent and Irish can be hard to pull off well, so if you just can't do it, it really doesn't matter that much.
[line said with desperation/anxiety] I… I showed a video in class. I know! I know! I really shouldn’t have, especially not as the dominating part, maybe you could get a slideshow up? But no, I showed a video, straight from youtube! Not even a viable site!
[line spoken the same as the previous one, this time to a close friend] A couple thanked me! They were smiling! My class doesn’t do that, Alice. They just don’t!
[said enthusiastically] I’ve seen your personal work and it’s amazing, such powerful imagery, not to mention you’ve got a great eye for colour too, your paintings are just lovely- and- and your sculptures!
Sam is one of Josh's friends. He is also the boyfriend of Alex and spends most of his screen-time arguing with him, he is a responsible and slightly fed-up sounding character and appears in the minisode "favour" and in chapter two. in the minisode he is /romantic?/ with Alex so if you don't like voicing that kind of stuff then I- [Alex's va] do recommend not casting.
[stern / impatient] fine. We’ll give ‘em 10 minutes, but then that’s it. We’re going.
[insisting, slightly fed-up but mostly caring] yes, you will. They have noses like wolves round here, you’d be sniffed out in no time.
[spoken angrily, with a hint of sadness at the end] no, no you’re not cool or edgy or however the hell you see yourself in your head. You’re just, sad.
[short pause]
This evening was supposed to be fun, y’know
Pat is the [somewhat abusive] single mother to Kess and Alan Jones, I must say this role must be given an extreme trigger warning as she is verbally abusive in several scenes, and is also somewhat )implied to be agoraphobic. She appears in chapters three and four. Pat is known for having a very short temper and demanding demeanor. although she acts terribly towards Alan, to Kess, although she isn't perfect, she is much more caring and tends to genuinely try her hardest as a mother.
[very angry, yelling] I’ll call the police and you know what they’ll do? They’ll break your window. They’ll smash your window and come into your precious room and they’ll drag you out by the scrap of your neck, and by the time you're back, you won’t have a door to block. Because this is MY house. I pay the bills around here, I pay for the roof over your head, and I paid for this FUCKING DOOR.
[passive aggressive] Ungrateful. That’s what you are.
[beat]
Selfish.
[long pause]
enjoy your day off.
[very angry, starts yelling at the end] You’re just the same as you always were, and just the same as you always will be, they didn’t fix you because nobody could fix you. You know why? Because you’re damaged goods, Ellen. DAMAGED GOODS. AND NOBODY EVER WANTS DAMAGED GOODS.
