Lancer is an extremely proud and noble knight who wishes to serve his lord to the best of his abilities. The geis laid upon him by Gráinne was taken by Lancer as a test of his pride. He never once blamed her for forcing it upon him, and he truly admired her ability to throw away her pride, title, and future for the sake of her love. He was constantly distressed by the fact that he betrayed his lord, and even as he died while Fionn did nothing, he did not blame his lord for his actions. Lancer believed that despite the cruel twist of fate that led him down this path, the days spent with his lord and his love were used to the fullest.

Gilgamesh greatly differs from most of the sovereigns and leaders in the history of humanity. He placed himself before his nation and the people, and he had neither the curiosity nor desire to conquer, possibly because he had too much in the beginning. He takes the time to enjoy himself, mastering every treasure and every pleasure. With conviction to treat good and evil equally, he has no need for other ideologies and ways of life when the absolute basis is "himself."[7] His actions and way of life left him alone, so Enkidu compared rectifying his attitude to rectifying his solitude.[8]

In his youth, Kiritsugu wished to be a Hero of Justice and protect the weak. He is often haunted by Shirley's question about what he wants to become, and how she believed him to have the ability to change the world. His hesitation to kill his first love when she became a Dead Apostle resulted in the death of the whole Island. Kiritsugu, realizing that his father was the cause of this and he would continue his Dead Apostle experiment, hardened his resolve and killed his father to prevent more deaths. Kiritsugu then resolved to make meaning and worth from the murder of his father. Only by hunting and assassinating all heretic magi like his father could he truly prevent such tragedies from occurring again. He lost all traces of youthful innocence after having spent his life going through countless battles while trying to obtain a utopia that could never be fulfilled. After finding out about the existence of the Grail, he sought to use it to obtain that utopia. He feels no emotion from personal victories over his targets, seeing them as nothing more than successful taunts with calculated resolutions.

Irisviel is quite peculiar compared to other Einzbern homunculi. She was the first to have received the same treatment as a human and the first to have human emotions. Her physical and mental capabilities surpasses those of a human, so they did not fail her during her exceptional growth, allowing her to gain self-awareness and emotions.

He is not sane, but neither is he insane. Despite his personal accomplishments, he never felt satisfaction. Despite his best efforts he could not enjoy what other people found happiness in, and instead found himself drawn to negative emotions like the pain of others. He is able to act like a normal person, even bringing pride to his father, but he intrinsically cannot understand others or things they see as "beautiful."

Tokiomi is an archetypal magus who, as all magi strive to do, wishes to reach Akasha. Although he loves his wife and cares for his daughters, he bases everything on his and their lives as magi, foregoing their happiness as regular people and only thinking of their future lives as magi. He has a "perfect and coldhearted" aspect to him that can be called a negative trait to his otherwise seemingly outstanding self-image. It is such a strong trait that it would have guided Rin's life if she were to ever understand that aspect of him.[4] While portrayed as a villain, he can be seen as a highly traditional person without a single thing wrong with him by personal standards.[1] His "charm point" is his goatee, and he spends a long time grooming it daily.[1]

Waver can be called a "spoiled brat" who is the very embodiment of a "narcissist that does not doubt he's a genius." He displays traits of cowardliness, being short-tempered, and constant complaints without action. He has an inferiority complex about his abilities as a magus and Master, and he constantly doubts himself at every turn. He forms a bond with Rider over time that begins to change him, with Rider bolstering his confidence and recognizing his traits. He praises Waver for riding into the front lines of battle with him, he comforts Waver upon seeing Caster's victims, and remarks in his abilities as an unconventional but exceptionally talented magus, though Waver quickly refutes him.

Due to having spent her childhood in an environment deprived of humanity Maiya lacks a sense of self. She currently considers that her entire being belongs to Kiritsugu,[4] and asking whether she loves Kiritsugu is like asking whether the innards love the brain. The question itself is meaningless. They share a sexual relationship that contains no real emotions. Kiritsugu sees it mainly as a rehearsal before he betrays Irisviel by allowing her to sacrifice herself and complete the Grail. While it is a form of self-abuse to him, and possibly the sorriest excuse to have an affair, Maiya treasured every second of it.[5]

Kariya is a benign person whose reason for originally leaving his family was out of disgust for their horrible and inhumane practices.[3] He was willing to give up on pursuing a romance with Aoi because he genuinely loved her, and initially thought she would be happy with Tokiomi. He is shown to be good with children with both Rin and Sakura taking a strong liking to him, and he in turn, loves them as they were his own children.

Saber is a strong-willed young woman who always speaks resolutely. She is courageous, determined, and set on winning the Holy Grail. She constantly insists that she is a knight first and that her gender is of little importance to her. She is resolute in following her own morals regardless of more viable tactics being available should she consider them to be underhanded, leading to conflicts with Kiritsugu over the strategy within the Fourth Holy Grail War. While obtaining the Holy Grail is of the utmost importance, rejecting her chivalry is something that she will not do under normal circumstance even if it should put her at a disadvantage.

Rider is noble and physically overbearing. He is not pragmatic, but is a person who lets history run its course and acts according to his impulses. While he is wild and somewhat inconsiderate to others, his greed inspired his subjects and ultimately resulted in their happiness. He is always jovial, values friendship highly, and he regards the bond with all of his followers in Ionioi Hetairoi as his greatest treasure. They all, being inspired by such a magnificent king, in turn gives him their undivided loyalty and adoration. He also admires people who treat friendship with sincerity, such when he meets Taiga Fujimura. He is compassionate to those with whom he bonds, such as telling Waver that it is natural to be sickened by Caster's atrocities and that he would strike anyone who would feel nothing from the sight.

Caster initially expresses an interest in Saber, appearing to be familiar with how she came to ruin at the end of her life. In truth, it is because he has mistaken her for Joan of Arc, whom he had been infatuated with when alive. Even after Saber reveals her true identity, Caster continues to delude himself, believing that her memories were warped by the trauma of her death. He even makes plans to capture Saber and force her to remember her 'true' past.

Ryuunosuke has a beautifully simple mind that wishes to seize one point to its very limit.[2] He is obsessed with the process of death and dying. He thinks that humans are inherently curious in death like a sort of forbidden knowledge and try to understand it by observing other people's death, and make up a virtual experience, so that's why he became a murderer.
According to him, claims that depiction of cruelty in fiction has a bad influence on young people are ridiculous nonsense, because if blood and screams in splatter horror had been at least a little more realistic, he wouldn't have become a homicidal maniac. He is satisfied by squeezing the best out of the life force of those he kills, of feelings such as the attachment for human life, anger and affection. To let his victims know the exact time and circumstances of their death, that in itself had a deep meaning as rich as a miniaturized life and the more he killed people, the more he understood the lives he took. That knowledge, that discernment in itself was a kind of dignity, a style that in his distorted logic, he considered as something "cool".[5] With his death, his last thoughts were the brightness and vibrance of his lifeblood and the excitement as he experienced his own death.

Saber is extremely prideful and haughty, boasting herself to be equal or better than her father in the ways of ruling and swordsmanship, and believes only her status as the child of Morgan caused her to be rejected. Rather than simply wish on the Grail to become king, she instead wishes to use it to challenge the sword of appointment as a method of proving kingship that even her father could not deny. She does not even think of failure, boasting overpowering words from a clear and unclouded voice that shows dignity befitting of a king. She abhors any discussion of her gender, displaying clear killing intent even towards her own Master. She says with no uncertainty that the topic is never to be brought up before her. She does not display any issue in wearing clothing that shows off her body.

During her childhood, she understood the Fourth Holy Grail War about as much as Shirou understands the Fifth, seemingly understanding while not actually comprehending it. She saw her father as a great magus who must be respected and loved, but failed to understand the negative aspect of his personality, the coldheartedness that accompanied such an ideal. If he had lived until Rin could actually understand his personality, it is likely that it would have greatly affected the development of her own personality. It is unknown if she would have opposed such inhumanity and left the path of a magus, or if she would have become a “perfect and coldhearted” magus like her father. Either fate for Rin would have been one far away from happiness.[6] Due to Tokiomi's early and untimely death, she was not aware of the original goal of the Holy Grail War to open a “hole” beyond the World.[7]

Natalia is a "money-grubber willing to do anything to make a quick buck" who constantly acts like a wild hedonist unable to save a dollar ahead in her life. Her creed in her line of work is "no matter what method you use, you must ensure your own survival." She somehow becomes the "morally questionable guardian" of the impressionable Kiritsugu, taking on a role he later considers to be that of a mother. She does not treat him like an orphan or adopted child, but rather orders him around like her assistant. She sexually harasses him on numerous occasions, but never goes as far as drinking his semen to obtain magical energy due to having truly fallen in love with him. It may be only to a small degree, kept locked away as "girlish thoughts" never told to anyone "like a good older sister."[1] She is usually a quiet person, rarely talking more than necessary.
